The kiss was demanding, it stole away his breath. It was so hard to think with the way his heart was pounding through his chest. Any moment now his chest would burst and he would be picking up pieces of himself off of the floor. It was too much, he was going to explode.
Harry woke with a start. His skin was sticky with sweat and other things he’d rather not identify. His satin sheets were wrapped like a straightjacket around his legs. He was panting, and it took him a moment to realize where he was. He looked around the darkened room before his eyes finally lingered on the sleeping figure curled up next him. He smiled a small smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, tucking a strand of hair behind an ear. He settled back on his pillows and waited for his breath to even out to something close to normal. The rush of his blood was so loud in his ears.
He reached over to fumble on his nightstand for his wand and cast a quiet Scourgify on himself and the sheets to clear up the mess his night adventures had caused. He unwrapped himself from the tangle that had become of his covers and spread them back in place the best he could without disturbing his partner.
Green eyes blinked up at the ceiling of his bedroom, but they were miles away. Harry waited for sleep to start creeping over him again, but he had a long wait ahead of him. His mind was spinning and there were questions he couldn’t even begin to answer. The stars twinkling in the window beside the bed little comfort through the long hours before slumber finally claimed him.
The morning dawned bright and early and Harry awakened to an empty bed. His hand caressed the indent left in the bed beside of him, the glint of his wedding band shining in the early morning sun. He stretched, groaning as the muscles in his back pulled taut and then relaxed. He pushed himself reluctantly from bed with eyes that weren’t quite ready to stay open yet.
His steps were heavy as he made his way to the bathroom and into the shower. The hot water pouring over him as his mind slowly awakened. With that lucidity came the memories of his dream the night before. He couldn’t remember much, the details fading in his memory, but he couldn’t forget the overwhelming feeling of lust and desire. Just thinking of it had him barely stopping short from stroking the apparent appreciation showed by his cock. He was just a little old to be jerking off in the shower to some wild fantasy from the night before.
Ignoring his erection he pushed all thoughts of the night before from his mind. He finished his morning routine in the bathroom and made his way into the kitchen. A beautiful woman with beautiful auburn curls stood in front of the stove. Eggs were being scrambled as bacon and sausage sizzled away on the griddle. Harry smiled as he approached from behind and wrapped his arms around her small waist.
“Oh, Harry, good morning!” she kissed his cheek with an affection that came with familiarity.
“Good morning.”
He returned the kiss before sitting at the small kitchen table. He grabbed the Daily Prophet from where it sat rolled on the table from this morning’s post arrival. He skimmed the articles before reading the Sports section. He groaned aloud at the latest Quidditch match scores. Some things never changed.
A plate of food was set down in front of him, and he set the paper down to start in on his breakfast. He glanced up at his wife as he paused halfway through to take a swallow of orange juice. He stopped with his glass halfway to his mouth. He couldn’t help but wonder if those soft full lips could ever kiss him quite as fiercely as the mouth in his dream had, or if her petite body could elicit the same strong desire he had felt in his dream.
“What is it, Harry?”
He quickly looked down, sheepish of where his thoughts had begun to head. Forcing a grin on his face, he shook his head. Harry took a swallow of his juice before sitting it back down.
“Sometimes I am just amazed at how lucky I am to have such an amazing wife.”
She laughed back at him and took his hand in hers. He felt badly for using something he knew would please her as a cover up for his indecent thoughts. Although she was an incredible woman and he was very lucky to have her as his own. He absent mindedly twisted the gold band on his left hand.
“I love you, Harry Potter,” her grin morphed slowly into a content smile.
“I love you too, Ginny.”
He apparated into the ministry and quickly made his way to the elevator on the far wall. He managed to cram his way in along with a half a dozen other people and at least twice as many flying memos. He managed to narrowly escape a nasty paper cut or two as the elevator doors opened on the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He hurried out after them before he missed his floor.
Walking along the hallway he took in the walls filled with portraits of great aurors and law enforcement agents past and present. There was one of Kingsley Shacklebolt, the current head of the Department and one of the best aurors Harry had ever had the pleasure of being acquainted with. On his way down the hall he popped his head into the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects and greeted his father-in-law. Arthur Weasley called out a welcome to him with a wave before returning to work.
Harry continued on down the hall before exiting the hall to the right and going through a door labeled “Auror Offices.” He walked into the open space and through the cubicles housing interns, apprentices, and lower level aurors. He started to make his way through the maze of walls.
“Hey Harry!” a young wizard with a shock of blonde hair flopping into his eyes called out.
“Good Morning, Desmond. How’s the theft case coming?” A groan was answer enough to his question.
“Don’t worry it’ll work out. If you need any help, you know where to find me,” Harry assured the novice auror.
“How’s it going, Potter?” an aging female with streaks of gray in her brown hair but a body of steel asked him as she walked past him about to enter her office along the walls of the room
“As good as it always goes, Winwood. How are your grandchildren?”
“They’re a nuisance as always,” her smile belied her words as she opened the door and disappeared inside.
Harry exchanged words with a few more people on his way across the room. One included an apprentice assigned to another auror who was out on a job too dangerous for a green horn. Another was a seasoned intern who was serving her second summer here while she completed her education to become a ministry official in another department. He had just finished discussing a very interesting turn in a case with her before he entered his office.
He shared his office with another auror, although right now he had the office to himself. He sat down behind his desk and rubbed his eyes, managing to push his glasses up on the top of his head. He took a deep breath before going through the memos that had lined themselves neatly on the edge of his desk. He read through each one before sorting them according to priority.
He was deep in a case study when there was a knock on his door. Harry glanced up to see Ron Weasley standing on the other side and waved him in. He set the paper he was holding down on his desk and was happy for the distraction from this particularly boring case. Ron ambled in and plopped down in one of the uncomfortable wooden chairs in front of Harry’s desk.
“What can I do for you, mate?”
“I thought you might have forgotten about lunch again.”
That comment had Harry glancing over at the clock and groaning. It was already fifteen minutes into his lunch hour and he had forgotten to pack anything for lunch. Ron laughed and stood, motioning for them to walk. Harry started to tidy up the files strewn all over his desk before he decided it was a lost cause and preceded Ron out the door.
They made their way down to the first floor of the Ministry building to use the Aparration areas to Apparate to one of their favorite lunch haunts. It was a delicious pizza parlor that had opened up not long after the war in Diagon Alley. It was one of many shops that had opened or re-opened after the town had built itself back up post-war. Harry couldn’t help but feel a little spark of joy every time he saw a new store pop up in the magical Alley. After all this was the first place he ever witnessed magic, and it would always be a special place for him.
They didn’t speak again until they were seated. Ron ordered the pizza and Harry looked around at the people in the parlor. Young people out on a lunch date, families with their children, and people on lunch from work like himself filled the tables and booths of the small space. The laughter and the chatter clouded the air and he couldn’t help but remember how desolate those years of war had made places like these.
“Harry?” Ron speaking his name had him jumping in his skin as he turned his attention back to his old friend.
“Where’d you go there for a minute?”
“I dunno. I guess I was just thinking about how much has changed in the past few years,” Harry shrugged.
“Yeah, it really has. I mean, think about it! We’re both married and we work full time jobs. It seems like just yesterday we were in Hogwarts worrying about Voldemort and trying to stay off of Snape’s radar,” Ron chuckled, his blue eyes sparkling.
“Sometimes I can’t really believe it. I feel like I should wake up back in Gryffindor tower to your snoring. It just all seems so surreal. Now I’m more worried about getting assignments done on time and getting home for dinner more often than not.” Ron snorted at that. “Eight years ago I wouldn’t have even thought of you and Hermione together and now here you both are being so domesticated!”
“You think that is bad! You’re married to my little sister! Now that is something that took some getting used to.” Harry burst out laughing at the face Ron was making and Ron joined in after a moment.
“Oh, before I forget, Hermione wanted me to ask if you and Ginny would be able to join us for dinner sometime this week.” Ron was slightly distracted as their waitress came by with their pizza and a refill on drinks.
“I don’t see why not. What day would be good for you guys?” Harry grabbed a slice of pizza and his mouth watered as he brought the piece of cheesy heaven to his mouth for a bite.
“Hermione has been super busy with her new position at work. I think the only day she has off all week is Thursday,” Ron talked around a huge mouthful of food.
Harry nodded. “That sounds good for us too, so Thursday it is.”
Silence descended on the two men as they devoured their pizza. It was comfortable silence though. One that came from knowing someone for years and knowing them almost as well as you knew yourself.
Harry walked into his home, dropping his key on the hall table and kicking his shoes off by the door. He wandered into the living room and decided to relax for a few minutes before starting dinner. A heavily dog eared book sat on the coffee table, and he picked it up after stretching out on the couch. He found where he left off and lost himself in the world of fiction for a little while.
The shadows in the room were getting longer when he finally set the book back down and took note of the time. He could see the sun setting in the large bay window in the room. Ginny would be home soon and he needed to get dinner on the table if they were going to eat tonight.
He headed into the kitchen and washed up. He started washing and peeling potatoes before slicing them into little discs and throwing them in a pan. Then he started on some chicken, baking it with a honey glaze. By the time Ginny came through the door looking tired but pretty in her healer’s robes, he had a plate of chicken with scalloped potatoes and string beans set out for her to enjoy.
He took his seat across from her, and they ate dinner with light small talk about how their workdays had gone. Harry informed her of their dinner date on Thursday and she confirmed that she had the evening free. She cleaned up the dinner dishes and Harry went about preparing for his daily jog. He headed to the bedroom to change clothes.
