Chapter One-Illuminations
Darkness, it was all around him. The hallway hummed with the gentle breathing from the portraits on the walls. The moon hid behind the clouds, giving no light to the boy sitting against the wall across from a window. He watched the stars twinkle, the moon try to illuminate the sky behind dark clouds. He sat there for what seemed like hours. The lack of sleep made his eyes burn, and the lack of blood made his head spin. His body could no longer move, but the boy was fine with that. He was tired. So tired of all the pain, of the effort it took to pretend everything was okay. Nothing was okay. It hadn’t been okay for a long time.
The boy could still feel the heat of his fathers’ breath on the back of his neck; the way his skin crawled when his father touched his body. It was even worse when his mother joined in, the humiliation of feeling her on top of him. It was what his life was like, lies and pain. He was glad it was finally coming to an end.
With great effort, the boy moved his head, looking down at his body. He was severally under weight, all the muscle he had gained in his Quiditch days had disappeared fast; then the small amount of body fat, now all was left was skin and bones. He could feel the blood still running out of his wrists, and for the first time in year; the boy smiled a genuine smile.
Finally he will be free. He could start to feel his heart slow down. His vision started to dim. ‘Just a few more minutes, and I’ll be free.’ Just as the thought finished, the boy saw a light coming from somewhere t his left, down the corridor that he had thought no one came to. He couldn’t do anything to hide himself, as the blood loss had made it impossible. The smile that had graced his lips slowly disappeared as he felt the nothingness of death take hold of him; he left himself slump over, but just as the darkness claimed him, he heard a voice call out to him.
“Malfoy?”
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Hermione rolled her eyes as once again she had to listen to Ron and Harry fight over Wizards Chest. She tried to turn them out to continue reading her ‘Hogwarts: A History’ her favorite book, but it was impossible, when all she heard was Ron bragging about winning yet again.
“Honestly, you two! Do you never stop fighting over whose winning?” Ron and Harry bother turned towards her. Hermione couldn’t help but laugh at the identical look of surprise on their faces.
“I can’t help it Herms if Harry can’t help but being a sore loser.” Ron stated, only to be hit in the shoulder by Harry. Again Hermione rolled her eyes. The antics of the two made her laugh even if the annoyance of it got on her nerves.
Another ten minutes of arguing, and failed attempts at enjoying her book, Hermione decided to go do her rounds. Being Head Girl allowed her certain luxuries, such as her own rooms, and the ability to be out after curfew. She loved the last privilege. A moon light walk always calmed her down. Though Harry had defeated He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, Hermione had the worst feeling that something was coming. A dark cloud always seemed to hover just around the corner and she was hesitant to find out just what was coming.
“I’m going to walk the halls; I will see you both tomorrow at breakfast.” After a few goodbyes to other Gryffindors, Hermione started her patrol. She started in the upper halls and made her way down to the dungeons. It was her least favorite place to walk, but she knew that Malfoy wouldn’t be on patrol tonight, as he had already told her he wasn’t feeling good and told her to do the patrol herself. How Draco Malfoy got to be Head Boy was beyond her. Though, Hermione had to admit, that Malfoy had been keeping to himself lately. After his father and mother had disappeared from the Ministry, Draco had been withdrawn and quiet.
Anyone could tell he had been losing sleep. Losing weight was another thing that Hermione could see. Though his robes hid it well, Hermione could see the shrunken slops that were his cheeks, and the way his robs fell off his body. She wouldn’t admit it to anyone, or out loud even to herself, but she worried over him in her mind. Her thoughts seemed to stray to him; even in her dreams she could not escape him, dreaming about him in pain, in the dark, begging for help.
Rounding a corner, Hermione paused; glimpsing something down farther, sitting on the ground slumped over. As she got closer, her heart started to pound. The tell tale sign of bright white blond hair was illuminated by the low light coming from the opposite walls window.
“Malfoy?” Hermione called out hesitantly. As soon as the words left her mouth Hermione saw Malfoy slump over onto the ground. She ran up to him, falling to his knees. As soon as she made contact with the ground, Hermione cringed as she felt something wet soak into her robes.
“Lumos.” As the tip of her wand illuminated, Hermione gasped. Malfoy’s body was thin, almost skin and bones. He had his robes off, and she could see the true extent of his malnourishment. As her eyes roamed down his body, checking for signs of injuries, she couldn’t hold in a gasp as she stopped at his wrists.
“Oh Merlin!” Hermione didn’t know what to do first, she knew that she needed to get him to Madame Pomfrey immediately, but she didn’t want to move him and cause further injury. Thinking fast, Hermione did the only thing she knew would bring someone to her. She opened her mouth, and screamed as loud and long as she could. A few minutes went by and Hermione finally heard running feet heading in her direction. A few seconds later, Hermione looked up and saw Professor Snape heading her way.
“Help! Please help!” At this point, Hermione was clutching Draco’s wrists to stop the bleeding, not that a lot of blood was coming out any more; as most of it was soaking into her robes at the moment. ‘Wait, when do I think of Malfoy as Draco??’
“Miss Granger, what is going on here?!” Snape growled, taking in the blood surrounding his godson and the bushy haired know-it-all. Hermione looked at Snape and couldn’t help the tears she had been fighting stream down her cheeks.
“I don’t know, Sir. I was patrolling and found him like this.” As she was speaking, Hermione’s eyes made their way to Draco’s body.
“Move out of the way, Miss Granger.” Hermione hurriedly moved to the side, wincing at the squishing sound of the blood in her robes as she did so. Hermione watched as Snape moved his wand over the motionless body of Draco Malfoy. A soft curse was all Hermione heard before Snape jumped up and levitated Draco next to him, moving fast through the halls heading to the Hospital Wing, with Hermione right on his heels.
“Miss Granger, go get the Head Master.” Hermione nodded absent mindedly, still following closely to Snape, not really hearing what he had said to her. It took a gentle push in the other direction for Hermione to comprehend the words that were spoken to her.
“Yes, right away!” Hermione turned and ran to the statue that concealed Dumbledore’s office. As if sensing the gravity of the situation, the statue moved of its own accord and emitted Hermione through without a password. Hermione ran into the office yelling for Dumbledore.
“Professor Dumbledore! Come, please hurry!” Dumbledore looked up from the papers he had been reading as he heard the tear filled cry of Hermione. Brows pinched in sudden worry, Dumbledore hastily got up from his seat and moved to stand in front of Hermione.
“What has happened? Is it Harry?” Hermione tried to suck more air into her lungs, as the running and crying were fast taking their toll on her. After opening and closing her mouth like a fish for what seemed like hours, Hermione finally got enough air to say,
“No, it’s Draco.” A look of surprise overcame the look of concern on Dumbledore face. He had heard rumors, of course, about young Malfoys sudden withdrawal into himself, but as everyone else had guesses, he had though that it had been the young man setting aside his childish action behind him. To see Hermione, one of the only people that truly had a reason to dislike Draco, come in here in tears about him, meant something truly seriously had happened.
“Lead the way Miss Granger.” Hermione nodded and started to run back to the Hospital wing, not particularly caring if the Head Master was following at her pace or not.
As Hermione reached the large, solid black, oak door of the hospital wing, she hesitated. She didn’t want to open the doors and be told Draco was dead. For some reason, the outcome was something she could not imagine. A life without Draco sudden seemed unreal and unacceptable. He could not die and leave her alone. Not taking the time to think on that certain epiphany, Hermione pushed open the doors and walked in.
A chill ran through Hermione when she didn’t hear anything. Utter silence filled the room, and Hermione just knew the worst thing that could have happened; had happened.
Draco didn’t survive.
