CHAPTER ONE
Taken From The Ashes
It was a warm night but Kingsley Shacklebolt still felt an icy chill shoot through his body as he surveyed the scene in front of him.
The Auror stood in the center of a wooded area that had all the signs of a fierce duel; trees had been blown apart while the rocks and ground seemed to smolder. The ground itself seemed to have been ripped apart as well but the devastation was not the worst. Laying on the ground directly in front of Kingsley was a young woman who appeared to be somewhere in her late-teens to her early-twenties, her lifeless blue eyes stared into the sky and her ankle-length light-blonde hair was wrapped around her petite frame like a funeral shroud while her soft and angelic round face was deathly pale. Beside her, also dead, was a man who appeared to be slightly older than the woman; with dark-brown hair and his grey-eyes sightless and unseeing.
The sight of the deceased couple was bad enough but the twenty other corpses of men, women, and children made the scene much, much worse as it indicated that whomever these people were, their killers had to have been large in number if the destruction of the area was of any indication.
Judging by the sight of the still-burning ruins of a mansion-type house that stood on top of the hill, Kingsley could only guess that the people had lived here for some time.
Kingsley sighed at the sight of the corpses; one would have thought that the killing would have ended when the Dark Lord Voldemort had been defeated four years previously but it now seemed that assumption had been most incorrect. But as much as Kingsley hoped that a band of rouge Death Eaters had been responsible for this massacre, he could not stop the strange feeling that there was something more to the story.
Hearing the familiar popping sounds of someone Apparating, Kingsley released the dead woman's arm and spun around, drawing his wand as he did so; as an Auror, he was taught never to take chances and he kept his wand steadily aimed at the three men who had just appeared.
The first was a tall wizard with long silver hair and his silver beard was tucked into his belt. His robes were a bright blue and his light-blue eyes showed their concern from behind his half-moon spectacles. His name was Albus Dumbledore. As soon as he had arrived at the scene, Kingsley had felt an overwhelming urge to call Dumbledore.
With Dumbledore were two other wizards: the first was Alastor Moody, a grizzled man with a heavily-scarred face and he walked with a limp. His most prominent feature were his eyes; one was a normal eye while the other was larger and electric-blue and it seemed to move independently of the other as it spun around in all directions as its owner carefully scanned the area.
The second man was a thin man with pale skin, a hooked nose, and beetle-black eyes. His oily black hair fell like a curtain around his face. At the sight of the wizard, Kingsley frowned as he knew that there was only one reason Dumbledore had brought Severus Snape along. Putting his personal thoughts to the side, Kingsley addressed Dumbledore.
"I'm sorry, Professor Dumbledore." said Kingsley in his deep voice. "But I felt that you should be called in."
"It's quite alright, Kingsley." replied Dumbledore quietly. "Though I must confess that I had greatly hoped that I would not have to see such a sight as this for quite some time."
Kneeling, Dumbledore began to examine the woman's corpse. "There's something quite odd about this young lady." The headmaster stated with a curious frown. "As a matter of fact, there's something peculiar about all of these unfortunate people."
Parting the top part of the woman's top, Dumbledore began studying the crystal amulet that she wore around her neck. As Kingsley and Snape watched, Dumbledore ran his wand in a circular motion around the amulet, which began glowing a variety of colors.
"Interesting." Dumbledore remarked softy in a awed voice "This amulet seems to be a magical object of such immense power that if used in the right situation, could literally destroy all of Europe."
"Then why didn't the Death Eaters take it?" Kingsley questioned the Headmaster "It's not like them to pass up such an opportunity to possess such an item." Dumbledore nodded in agreement to the Auror's words.
"That's my point exactly!" he said as he began to examine the man laying beside the woman "Here. This man is wearing the exact same type of amulet, as well; I suspect that we will find that each and every one of these unfortunate souls are wearing such amulets as well."
Dumbledore stood up and brushed the dirt and leaves from his robes as he added "Death Eaters did not commit these murders. Someone else did this terrible crime- someone in possession of powers not even the Dark Lord Voldemort would have the ability to control."
Moody's artificial eye swiveled around to lock onto something nearby and the grizzled old Auror drew his wand at the same time he said "Before we continue this investigation, Dumbledore; what do you suggest that we do with - him?"
Moody waved his wand, causing a pile of debris to fly away and Dumbledore, Snape, and Kingsley could only stare in shock at what Moody had uncovered.
There, shivering with fright, was a small boy who could not have been older than four years of age. What little clothing he had on was ripped and torn and his head was covered with a filthy mop of brown hair. His blue eyes watched the four men fearfully.
Clutched in the boy's tiny fingers was what appeared to be a strange-looking metal wand and an oddly-shaped crystal ball. When Dumbledore took a step towards him, the child retreated as far as he could out of Dumbledore's reach. Immediately seeing that trying to approach the boy would be fruitless, Dumbledore decided on another tactic; if the child was afraid of wizards, perhaps he would respond better to a woman, preferably one who was already a mother. Asking Molly Weasley to come, however, was completely out of the question as she would no doubt frighten the boy even more with her doting behaviour.
"Kingsley, perhaps you would be good enough to go to Ottery St. Catchpole and ask Mrs. Lovegood to come back here with you. Perhaps her mannerisms will be able to put our young friend's mind at ease."
Kingsley nodded and Disapparated. As they waited for him to return, Dumbledore took the time to study the boy more carefully. He certainly seemed determined to hide the crystal from his view and around his neck was the same style of amulet as the dead bodies that littered the ground around him.
"He seems to be rather protective of that crystal ball, headmaster." Snape stated "A toy of some kind, perhaps?" At the former Death Eater's suggestion, Dumbledore shook his head.
"No." the old wizard answered in reply to the question put to him "Whatever that object is, it is far more powerful than a magical toy. I'm also sensing a great amount of magical energy within the boy- it is similar to that of an ordinary magical child... but with some rather unique qualities that I am unfamiliar with. Whatever the case- I am finding it of great importance that we find a way to take that object away from him as it may just be the key to solving the mystery of why these people were murdered."
A few more minutes passed before two Pops announced the arrival of Kingsley. With him was a young woman with blonde hair and silvery eyes who was carrying a young girl that Dumbledore knew to be Luna. Like her mother, Luna had the same eyes.
"Ah Kynthia." greeted Dumbledore. "I am grateful that you agreed to come here."
"Yes." replied Mrs. Lovegood in a soft voice. "Kingsley was kind enough to inform me of the details. Where is the boy?"
"He is there."
Mrs. Lovegood looked in the direction of Kingsley's finger. "Oh, yes I see him now." she said. "Oh dear, he is in a frightful state, isn't he? I will do what I can."
Setting her daughter onto the ground, Mrs. Lovegood slowly approached the boy while keeping her hands in sight. At the sight of the woman coming towards him, the boy retreated back with a frightened whimper and Mrs. Lovegood immediately stopped.
"Hmmm.." she said "Perhaps I should try something else."
Mrs. Lovegood then knelt down and whispered something into Luna's ear and all eyes watched as the four-year old girl began stepping towards the spot where the boy was cowering. At this, Snape leaned over to whisper to Dumbledore.
"Why is she sending her daughter? The boy might be dangerous, as far as we know." he said.
"I believe that Kynthia has the belief that since the boy runs whenever a strange adult attempts to approach him, it might be better to have him see another child his own age." replied Dumbledore.
The boy noticed the small girl-child approaching him and though he did not try to flee, he did shrink back slightly as his eyes showed fear, wonder, and puzzlement; as though he had never even seen another child before. Luna stopped just in front of him and simply watched him with her grey eyes while the boy's dark-blue eyes studied her.
Five minutes passed, then fifteen. The entire time, no one moved as they merely watched the two children as they waited for whatever happened next. Finally, Luna moved closer and raised her left arm; her movement causing the boy to flinch back slightly as though he were expecting her to strike him. Instead of striking him however, Luna ran the tip of her tiny index finger gently down the length of the boy's nose; running it from the bridge to the tip and back again.
"She's showing him affection." explained Mrs. Lovegood. "I often do that with her when I am unable to hug her. Oh... I think he's responding."
Sure enough, the boy raised one of his skeletal fingers and ran it down Luna's nose; soon, both children were simultaneously repeating the movements as the silent adults watched.
"Let's give them a few more minutes before taking the next step." suggested Dumbledore.
"And what, exactly, would that next step be?" asked Snape. "Announcing their engagement?"
Dumbledore chuckled slightly before answering. "No. No, I will need you to return to Hogwarts and bring back a Sleeping Solution. It will need to be modified, however, due to the state the boy's body is in. Once that is done, he will be taken back to Hogwarts and placed in the care of Madam Pomfrey."
"And after that, straight into an orphanage." growled Moody.
"I am afraid that will not be the case." stated Dumbledore. "Despite his age and his sickly state, I can sense quite a large amount of magical energy within him. Clearly, whatever this child has suffered has caused his magic to develop at a very early stage of life and I fear that placing him within the care of an orphanage would be the same as placing an extremely powerful bomb. However, let us take things one step at a time. If you please, Severus."
Frowning, Snape walked out of the area and Disapparated. Mrs. Lovegood used the moment to closely examine the bodies that were on the ground closest to her; while her daughter kept the boy occupied, Mrs. Lovegood decided to search the woman's clothing and Dumbledore could not help but notice that Mrs. Lovegood has frozen when she discovered the amulets that the people were wearing. From the way she was acting, it was almost as if Kynthia recognized the amulet because the fingers of her other hand grasped something underneath her robes in the area of her chest.
Turning back to Kingsley, Dumbledore informed the Auror of what his next move would be "Until more information has been uncovered to explain how and why these people were massacred, the boy will be in my personal custody at Hogwarts until such time as all of the mystery surrounding our young friend has been solved. I believe that the best place would be to start would be to study the wand and that crystal sphere he is holding."
"I think getting the wands and the mirror is going to be easier now." stated Kingsley with a small smile.
Dumbledore turned to look in the direction of the children and what he saw made even him smile. The two four-year olds were huddled together with the tops of their heads touching. Both of them sound asleep.
Moving quietly, Dumbledore approached the sleeping children and gently picked up the wand and the sphere and placed them in the large pocket located in his robes. Since the boy was sleeping already, Dumbledore decided that was the best time to transport him to Hogwarts before Snape returned.
Carefully picking the boy up, Dumbledore gave his next order. "Kingsley, you and Moody remain here and inform Severus that I have returned to Hogwarts with the boy. Once I get our young friend here safely to the Hospital Wing, I will call upon a few more Order members and arrange for these people to receive a decent burial." Dumbledore then turned to Mrs. Lovegood. "Kynthia, I cannot tell you how great a service yourself and your precious daughter have performed this night."
"It's quite alright, Professor." replied Mrs. Lovegood softly as she cradled Luna in her arms. " I have a feeling that our efforts will be repaid in a rather large way. Now, I must put my little Luna to bed; she is quite tired from her part in tonight's events."
"Then I shall allow you to proceed." said Dumbledore with a polite bow. "I am most grateful to yourself and to Luna as well. Good night."
The sun was now rising but Dumbledore failed to notice so engrossed was he in his study of the crystal sphere as well as the strange wand that had been taken from the child who was presently sleeping in the Hospital Wing under the watchful eye of the school matron.
At the present time, the headmaster was studying the wand. Twirling it with his fingers, Dumbledore frowned as he noticed that the entire body of the wand was made from a silver-blue substance that was metallic in nature but it did not feel like any type of metal that he was familiar with. One thing was for certain, the wand was very powerful; even more so than Dumbledore's own.
Deciding to see what the wand could do, Dumbledore attempted to perform several spells only to be met with nothing. Either the wand possessed no core or it had been enchanted to answer only to a certain hand.
With a heavy sigh, Dumbledore placed the wand onto his desk and picked up the crystal sphere. Like the wand, the sphere also seemed to have been made of material unfamiliar to him despite Dumbledore's vast knowledge of alchemy. Whoever had created the wand and the sphere had to have been either a eccentric genius or a raving madman.
As he frowned at the mirror, Dumbledore's thoughts went back to that October night and wondered what exactly had happened the night that Lily and James Potter had lost their lives. The moment his thoughts had passed through his mind, Dumbledore gasped and his eyes widened as the sphere suddenly came to life as his mind became filled with the images of James screaming before Voldemort killed him, Voldemort demanding that Lily step aside and Lily's refusal. The images finally ended with Lily's death and Voldemort's downfall. To Dumbledore, it was like looking back into the past through a small window.
Once the visions had ceased, Dumbledore placed the sphere back down onto the desk with shaking hands as he realized what the sphere's function was... that of a visual historical record that could reveal any past occurrences no matter how far back in the past that the occurrence had taken place. Exactly how the headmaster knew this, he did not know. One thing was frighteningly clear however; Dumbledore was trifling with extremely powerful magic that no wizard on Earth had ever seen before.
For a long while, Dumbledore fought with himself on the matter of whether he should continue with his investigations or simply throw the sphere into the lake and allow it to be lost for all time. In the end, it was his desire to know everything concerning the matter of the deaths of Lily and James Potter that won out in the end.
Picking the sphere up, Dumbledore took a few moments to prepare himself and began asking questions.
The base was located underground beneath a massive forest and it was here that a man made his way along the dimly-lit hallway as he strode with purpose towards his destination. The man was tall with greying auburn hair and his grey eyes were as cold as steel.
His attire consisted of a grey uniform that suggested that he was part of a military faction of some kind but the weapon that hung from his belt was unlike any kind of weapon used by any known military in any part of the world as it resembled a cross between a wizard's wand and a Muggle pistol.
Soon, the man reached a metal door. Opening it, he quickly stepped through to find himself standing in a darkened chamber with a large overhead ceiling lamp shining a circle of light onto the cement floor. Without hesitation, the man stepped into the lighted area and waited.
"Make your report, Major Hildebrandt." a distorted male voice ordered from the back of the room.
"We have tracked down another group of Merovians and followed all procedure as dictated." the man, Major Hildebrandt answered in a professional and emotionless voice.
"Were there any survivors?" another distorted voice- this one female- demanded to know. Hildebrandt shook his head in response.
"None. All of the Merovians were exterminated to the last child as my troops followed protocol by arranging the scene to appear as though it had been a wizard attack."
"Excellent!" the first voice stated with approval "You have done well, Major. And the artifact?"
Hildebrandt shook his head "I am sorry, but the artifact was not in the possession of anyone in the group; either they had already disposed of it or our intel was faulty."
A heavy silence followed Hildebrandt's statement. After a long, tense moment, the first voice spoke again. "We must acquire the artifact." it said firmly "Only with the knowledge it contains will we finally achieve our sacred goal of eradicating the wizard infestation that threatens us all."
"I understand. I shall have my people double their efforts."
"Very well, Major. You are dismissed."
Once Major Hildebrandt had departed, the female voice broke the silence "Our reports indicated that the artifact would be found with this latest group of Merovian invaders; they must have hidden it somewhere either before or during our attack."
"Agreed." the first voice responded.
"Why are we bothering ourselves with finding this artifact?" another male voice demanded "If it is a magical item, what possible use could it be to us?"
"Because-" the first voice snarled "once we discover how to work it, we will be able to destroy all magic on Earth and complete the noble mission our ancestors started all of those centuries ago! This time, the International Society of Witch Hunters shall be victorious!"
