Chapter 1
The din of noises filtered out of Draco’s mind as he watched the one girl of his obsession coming into the great hall with a group her friends. Yes, he Draco Abraxas Malfoy was staring at the Gryffindor’s poster girl Hermione Granger. He watched as she sat down with the she-weasel and toyed around with her food and stayed away from Pothead and the Weasel. Obviously there was something off between the trio.
Honestly, Draco couldn’t for the life of him remember when she had become the obsession of his thoughts. One second the abuses and torments in his head were there and the next they had turned into forms of teasing her and verbally sparring with her as if he enjoyed it. Merlin, he did not just admit the fact that he liked talking to Granger. Draco glanced down at his plate and suddenly lost his appetite. He got up from the table and nodded to Theodre Nott and Blaise Zabini before exiting the great hall. As soon as he took one step towards the great hall, Parkinson threw herself at him.
“Draco the Halloween ball is coming soon, and you still haven’t told me what type of clothes we are going to wear since we are going together as a date and-“
“Since when are we going together Parkinson,” sneered Draco, Gods he couldn’t stand this bitch with her shrilly voice and pathetic attempts at getting him to get back together with her. His one and only mistake being that he slept with this slut had somehow given her the notion that they were all but promised to one another and would marry each other as soon as they graduated from school.
“But Drakie I thought you wanted to go with me since we are a couple and all and we are all but promised to each other. If you are mad I can help you release some tension you know Drakie..” simpered Parkinson.
Draco scowled at the bitch who just could not take the goddamn hint. “There is no us Parkinson and neither are we promised to each other,” stated Draco coldly “Now get out of my face Parkinson I have business to be about.”
“You’re lying to me Drakie!” yelled Parkinson in her shrill voice, “Please tell me what I did wrong and I will try to make it right. I am so sorry Drakie. I will do anything to make it up to you.” At this point Parkinson was roving her hands over Draco and Draco was not in one bit pleased, instead he looked quite peeved.
This bitch has the audacity to touch me and humiliate me in front of so many people. Fuck she’s going to get it.
Draco’s face became devoid of emotion. Aware of the eyes of pretty much everyone in the great hall, he stated calmly to Parkinson that in no terms were they together as a couple and there was no such possibility either and she might as well forget about there ever being a possibility. Draco swept one cursory glance around the great hall and his eyes landed on Granger. She was staring at him with curiosity in her eyes, but that was not something that stood out to him but rather there was a certain sadness etched into her eyes that caught Draco’s attention. He felt a slight twinge within himself and wondered what that was and where it came from. Draco spared Parkinson one last look and walked out the Great hall with his robes billowing around him in a manner that would have done his Godfather proud.
Draco heard the noise level within the Great hall increase drastically as soon as he stepped outside it. He snorted to himself thinking about the stupid retards muttering to themselves about the spectacle that they witnessed himself.
Honestly can that bunch in there get any more pathetic..Draco asked himself wistfully as he made his way towards astronomy tower. There were too many important things going on in this fucked up world of theirs that made these things completely insignificant.
The sun was setting when Draco finally made it to the top of the astronomy tower. He wistfully gazed at it and thought over the change that had come over him during the summer of fifth year. Draco had grown up not only physically but also emotionally. He had stepped out of the shadows of boyhood and towards the horizon of becoming a new man. The process had been arduous and had taken a heavy toll on him. He was forced to re-evaluate his beliefs on pureblood bigotry and if having blood of pure origin was truly a big factor in stating that you were inferior to those with pure blood. Draco felt lost and confused for the big part of the summer because if he agreed with the pureblood stratagems and swore to Voldemort then he would be reduced to nothing but a servant bowing to a half blood maniac which in turn counteracted the logic of being superior due to pure blood. Also Draco noticed how his father had ended up in Azkaban after all he had done.
Wasn’t Lucius Malfoy correct? If he was, then why is he now in Azkaban, why is he suffering like that, do I have to follow in his footsteps and suffer in such a manner, what good is a belief that separated a man from his family and put him in a prison?
These questions plagued Draco’s mind for the vast majority of the summer, but eventually he was able to come to an answer. The answer lead Draco to follow a different part then the one that was expected of him. He sighed and ran a hand through his blond hair and his eyes stared out towards the sky in frustration. Draco decided that he was going to do this and get it over with.
Draco leaned away from the railing on top of the economy tower and briskly started walking towards Dumbledore’s office. Draco being a prefect knew the password to Dumbledore’s office. After the Gargoyle had leapt to a side Draco knocked on the door and waited for permission to enter the office.
“Enter” came the voice of the weathered old man.
Draco took a deep breath to steady his nerves and fixed his composed mask of boredom and entered the office. Dumbledore looked up from the paper he was viewing from his desk and smiled at Draco with a kind smile and a knowing twinkle in his eyes.
Blast that bloody smile of this twittering old fool
Draco hated that smile and those blue eyes that seemed to pierce through him and were able to look into his soul.
“Welcome Mr. Malfoy,” said Dumbledore in a please tone for Draco had never paid Dumbledore a visit voluntarily, “would you like a sherbert drop,” referring to a bowl of candies “they are quite good if I do say so myself.”
Draco accepted a sweet from the old man so as not to offend him by declining his offer. “Sir there is request that I have and I would like it if you were to consider it.”
Dumbledore’s expression became thoughtful although it still remained kind. “Speak away my boy, what can this old man do for you?”
Draco cleared his throat and took a deep breath. He swallowed the candy and stared Dumbledore directly into the eyes. “Sir my request is that I would like to join the Order of The phoenix.”

Hermione had had a terrible day all day and she could just feel a headache coming on. She stared wistfully outside the Gryffindor dormintory’s window and was once again come over with the sadness that she felt when she thought about the manner in which she was treated by her friends. Her friends had once again assumed that no one was going to ask Hermione out for the ball and that they would perhaps treat her as a charity case and pin her with Ron. There was nothing wrong with Ron, he was sweet and kind of cute in his own way, but he was nowhere near the image of the type of man that she wanted for herself.
Hermione was jerked out of her musings by Ginny coming into the room and announcing that she was hungry.
“Come on Mione let’s go down and eat. I’m bloody starving after the quidditch practice.” said Ginny.
Hermione got up from her position and followed Ginny out the Gryffindor dormintory and towards the Great Hall. On the way there they met up with Anthony Goldstein and Hannah Abbot.
“Hi Tony, Hi Hannah. How’s it going with the two of you?” queried Hermione politely.
“We are doing just fine Hermione,” replied Tony while giving Hermione a once over from lidded eyes. Of course Hermione was oblivious to this fact and carried on as if nothing significant happened. They parted ways at the entrance of the Great Hall and went towards their house tables. As usual Hermione’s eyes were drawn to the Slytherin, towards one blond in particular.
Hermione had been watching Draco Malfoy interacting with other students this year and to say that she was surprised would be the greatest understatement of the decade. She had noticed how his whole demeanour had changed, as if he was no more that snivelling child that ran to his father for every little thing. He had become more helpful to the first and second years and she had yet to be on the receiving end of his abuse this year. Whenever they interacted, he would nod with a polite “Granger” and be on his way. This behaviour befuddled Hermione’s made to an extent that was far beyond her comprehension.
Hermione notice that while she was lost in her musings she was still staring at him. She found Malfoy staring back at her and she felt herself flush with a type of heat that she had never experienced before.
What’s happening to me? Why am I reacting like this to Draco Malfoy of all the people?
The whirlwind of questions crashed on in the inside of her skull while she quickly averted her eyes and sat down to eat at the Gryffindor table. She chatted with Neville and Parvati about the upcoming ball. It seems that Neville and Parvati were going together to the ball and she felt happy for them. It was high time that Neville got a chance to go out with someone who would appreciate him for who he is. Hermione felt a stare on her back, and without turning she knew who it was. She turned around and acted as if she were stretching her arms and stared straight into the eyes of Malfoy. She held his stare for a millisecond but that portion of the second seemed prolonged to an eternity to Hermione. All the voices fell away and it was just the two of them staring at each other. Cinnamon coloured eyes gazed into a maelstrom of grey eyes. Hermione did not become aware of the fact that she was hot and bothered and that her breath had caught in her throat. With extreme effort, she tore her eyes away from him and looked at her table to see if anyone had noticed the little interaction. She tried to get her breathing under control and to her it felt as if she had just run a marathon.
“Are you alright Hermione?” asked Neville who noticed her state after her little staring contest.
“Oh I am just fine Neville,” squeaked a very red and flustered Hermione. Before Neville could ask another question, Hermione became aware of the commotion occurring at the Slythering table. It seems that Parkinson was once again after Malfoy about how they were all but promised to each other.
“..in no terms that we are together as a couple and there was no such possibility either and Parkinson, you might as well forget about there ever being a possibility of us being together. There was never a us neither is there going to be a us.”
Hermione held her breath as she listened to Malfoy’s voice and she felt slight tremors within her body. Malfoy swept his eyes across the hall and across the hall. But she felt as if his eyes stayed on hers for a second longer than the rest.
I probably just imagined that. There is no way that Malfoy, poster boy of Slytherin, the epitome of the Pureblood bigotry looked at me without disdain. But then why did her treacherous heart disagree with her and why did it want to believe that there was more to that look then what it looked like. And why in Merlin’s name did she have a happy feeling bloating in her stomach when Malfoy announced that he was not dating Parkinson. It just doesn’t make sense.
Hermione’s appetite fled her as she contemplated these events in her head. She put her head back to the dinner and half heartedly paid attention to the conversations regarding the break up around her. The only thing bouncing around in her head was that Malfoy was single and that thought made her happy for some awkward reason. Halfway through the dinner, After Malfoy had left, she excused herself and wandered around the castle.
Hermione thought to the changes that had occurred in Draco Malfoy over the summer. Perhaps the capture of his father had forced him to re-evaluate his current standing. Hermione felt a twinge of sympathy for him for having his father tossed into prison. It was one thing for believing that Lucius deserved to go to prison (which he rightfully did) but another to believe that a son lost his father at such a young age. Hermione had noticed the manner in which he had become more tactful and more mature. He had not risen to any of the rude comments made to him by Harry and Ron regarding his father. He had simply stared at them and ignored them, without his trademark smirk. There was no “You’ll be next mudblood” or “Watch your back scarhead”, simply walking away from trouble and this was a very mature behaviour displayed from a person such as Draco Malfoy. She was lost in her musings when she rounded the corner and walked smack into a solid body. Hermione felt herself lose her balance and was just about to topple over and fall on the ground when two strong arms steadied her against a very well sculpted chest.
“I’m..I’m sorry..I wasn’t looking while walking and...”, the words died in Hermione’s throat as she looked into the grey eyes staring intensely into her own.
