Harry was glad for the peace and quiet of the Saturday afternoon. It was late spring and all the other members of his house were either down in Hogsmead or enjoy the beautiful day wandering the grounds of Hogwarts. Which left him alone to enjoy the book that had currently reached the top of his favorite magical titles: The Transpiring of muggle musicals into wizarding theater.
Just as he was starting a riveting section on the wizarding world’s adaptation of Broadway’s “Cats” the sound of the portrait closing drew his attention from the pages of the book to the tall shaggy redhead that had just entered the common room.
“Oh, hi Harry.” Ron greeted boisterously as he crossed the room towards the darker haired boy.
“Hi, Ron.” Harry tried, and failed to keep the annoyance from his voice as he peered at the red head over his book.
“Hey Harry, you’ll never guess what happened to me at Hogsmead this morning. This guy was smiling at me and talking to me.” Ron went on as if nothing was amiss between the two.
“That’s very interesting.” Harry stated dryly, his gaze returning to the pages of his book.
“He was being real friendly, and I think he was coming on to me. I think he might’ve thought that *I* was gay.”
Harry nearly choked on his own breath and cleared his throat nervously before speaking. “So, uh, why are you telling me this? Why should I care? I don’t care. What did you have for lunch today?”
“Oh you don’t have to get all defensive about it, Harry…” Ron offered as he moved to sit on the couch next to him.
“I’m NOT getting defensive!” The green eyed boy practically shouted, before schooling his features and forcing his tone to lower. “What do I care about some gay guy you met, okay? I’m trying to read.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean anything by it Harry. I just think it’s something we should be able to talk about.”
“I don’t want to talk about it Ron. This conversation is over.”
“Yeah but…”
“Over!” Harry snapped harshly.
“Well, okay, but just so you know…” Suddenly Ron was launching himself off the couch and turning to face Harry fully before he spontaneously broke out into song. “If you were gay, that would be okay. I mean ‘cause hey, I’d like you anyway. Because you see, if it were me, I would feel free to say that I was gay. But I’m not gay.”
“Ron, please! I’m trying to read.” Harry pleaded, trying to concentrate on the words on the page, though the bouncing mop of red hair and goofy smile of his best friend kept drawing his gaze. “What?”
“If you were queer,” Ron continued his song enthusiastically.
Harry let out a strangled cry of annoyance. “Ron!”
“I’d still be here.”
“Ron, I’m trying to read this book.”
“Year after year.”
“RON!”
“Because you’re dear to me.”
Another cry of frustration left Harry as he launched the book at the singing dancing red head.
Ron dodged the flying object gracefully as he continued to sing and dance about the room. “And I know that you, would accept me too.”
“I would?”
“If I told you today: Hey guess what I’m gay! But I’m not gay. I’m happy, just being with you.”
Harry was becoming desperate to tune out the slightly off key red head and tried vainly to recite the names of the musicals he had just been reading about. “Dance of the were-cat, Wobbling Willy.”
“So what should it matter to me, what you do in bed with guys!” Ron belted at the top of his lungs, completely drowning out Harry’s attempt to speak over him.
“Ron, that’s Gross!” Harry practically shrieked, a brilliantly bright red blush flaring over his nose and cheekbones.
“No, it’s not.” Ron corrected before returning to his increasingly absurd and embarrassing song. “If you were gay, I’d shout: HOORAY!”
Harry shoved his fingers into his ears to try and escape the continued oddness. “I’m not listening.”
“And here I’d stay.”
The dark haired boy began to hum loudly to himself, yet nothing seemed to drown out the sound of the red head in front of him.
“But I wouldn’t get in your way.”
Another scream of annoyance and embarrassment made it past Harry’s lips. He really couldn’t believe his best friend was putting him through this kind of torture.
“You can count on me to always be beside you everyday, to tell you it’s okay, you were just born that way, and as they say: it’s in your DNA, you’re gay!” Ron belted at the top of his lungs, dancing around like a monkey.
“But I’m not gay!” Harry shouted angrily, feeling that at any moment he was going to loose completely hold on his senses and hex the other boy into silence.
“If you were gay.” Ron added with a smug smile.
Harry gave out a strangled cry and sat bolt straight up in bed. The motion causing his young wife to stir into the waking world with him.
“Harry, are you alright? Was it memories of the war?” Ginny asked calmly, moving to lay her hand on his forearm in an attempt to comfort him.
“Worse, I dreamt Ron broke into a spontaneous song.” Harry groaned. “You are never talking me into going to another musical with you again Love.”
Ginny couldn’t help the giggle that escaped her. “Go back to sleep Harry. You can tell me all about it in the morning.”
