Chapter One
Severus slipped into the empty seating at the back of the large classroom, as the students were finishing up their test. Professor Hermione Granger was patrolling around, checking every now and again to see if there was no cheating. She announced that time was up and she had the students take the tests over to her desk before leaving. It was then that she saw Severus Snape at the back of the room. Frowning she went over and stopped just short of where he was sitting.
“Headmaster, this is a surprise,” she murmured, sitting on the desk in front of him. “What brings you here, if I may be so bold as to ask? My evaluation was just last week…”
“No, this isn’t about that,” he replied. “May we speak in private?”
Arching her brow, she nodded and led the way over to her office. She went to her chair behind her desk and waited for him to speak. He paced using the time to gather his thoughts before stopping.
“I find myself in a rather difficult predicament.” He looked over to her, not knowing what to expect. She was simply waiting for him to finish what he was saying. Relaxing, he went on with, “I must ask you for a tremendous favor.”
“Would you like a tea?” she asked him.
“Fire whiskey would be better,” he muttered.
Sighing heavily, she said, “Something tells me that I’m going to need it as well.”
Unwarding her desk, she pulled out a bottle of Ogden’s along with two glasses. Pouring two drinks, she handed over a glass. Sitting back, she simply waited for him to speak.
“Have you heard about Lucius Malfoy?” he inquired after five minutes of silence.
“Only enough to call it rumor at best,” she answered.
“He and his wife were assailed by rogue death eaters,” he said quietly. “His wife died and he is still in St. Mungos.”
“Merlin,” she breathed. “Why would death eaters attack them? It’s been ages!”
“No one is certain,” he murmured. “Some of the aurors thought it might have something to do with Narcissa’s helping Potter, but truth to tell that theory seems weak even to them.”
“How is he doing?”
Pursing his lips, he muttered, “About as well as a man that just lost his wife and sight is, I suppose.”
“What?!” Sitting up straighter, she asked, “What did they do to him?”
“He was hit with an unknown hex and he now can’t see anything,” he murmured. “Not even light.”
Studying him a moment, Hermione asked, “And this has what to do with you being here?”
“He needs help,” he told her, but then held up his hand to stop whatever protest she was about to give. “Just hear me out before you say anything.”
Narrowing her eyes, she motioned with her hand for him to continue.
“Blindness, as you may or may not know, is usually treated using magic such as see-all spells using objects such as small crystal orbs or magical eyes implanted into the head itself.” When she nodded, he went on with, “Thanks to the spell that was used to blind him in the first place these solutions can’t be used. This leaves us with only one path available…”
“Muggle,” she interjected quietly.
“Exactly,” he confirmed.
“You do realize that just because I may be muggle born, doesn’t mean I am in any way informed as to how newly blinded people learn to adapt to their environments,” she said casually, sipping on her drink.
“I’m very aware of that,” he told her. “But what you are is the only muggle born witch with the patience, the ability to learn what must be done, and the magical know-how to keep him in his place if need be.”
“I am your last resort, in other words?” she asked, as she placed her drink on the desk.
“Yes,” he replied. “The healers are on the verge of ignoring their vow of doing no harm and I am going to throttle him—and that’s the nicest thing I or anyone else, his son included, have come up with.”
Flinching she thought it over a moment, before stating, “I’m no healer.”
“I’m aware of that.” He leaned forward with an imploring look on his face as he asked, “If you could see fit to help those as supposedly lowly as the house elves, can you not assist someone truly in need of your help?”
“I have a job,” she reminded him.
“Yes, that you do, but summer starts in a week and I have it on good authority that you are at loose ends during the break.” He leaned back looking smug as he did so.
Rolling her eyes, she muttered, “Damn gossip mills.”
“So will you do it?” he asked after she hadn’t spoken for a few minutes.
“Will I have to deal with him alone?”
“You won’t be staying alone nor will you have to put up with him by yourself. Draco and I will be there, as well as the house elves.”
Taking a fortifying drink as well as a deep breath, she said, “Fine. I’ll do it. But Merlin help you if he decides to try to be a pain in my arse, because it won’t be he that will be paying through the nose.”
“Me?! Why should I pay for his conduct?”
“Was it or was it not your idea to enlist me in this attempt to aid your comrade?”
Narrowing his eyes he muttered, “You should have been a Slytherin.”
“What I should have been is immaterial at this point, Mister Snape.” She put down her empty glass, got up and went over to him. “If you think I’ll be his amendable whipping girl to make your life easier, you have another thing coming.”

“Well?” Lucius’s voice came out of the darkness of the room.
Severus was quiet a moment before answering, “She’s agreed.”
There was silence followed by, “But?”
“She’ll be taking out anything done to her on me.”
Malfoy chuckled. “She should have been…”
“I’m well aware of that,” Severus snapped. “But like she mentioned to me earlier that point is clearly immaterial.”
“So what to do?” he sighed.
Severus turned on the lights in the room with a wordless spell with the drawl of, “How about a bath? I can smell you from here.”
