Amore et Amicitia
(Love and Friendship)
Prologue: Argentum Vitrum (Silver Glass)
The boy leaned over to the calendar on his wall, he crossed off yet another day as the grandfather clock in the hall struck midnight. He sat back and gazed at the little red cross that marked the thirty-first of August and felt a tiny trickle of excitement run down his spine, he grinned happily at his calendar and finally scrambled beneath his bed sheets. He turned his head to gaze out the window and tried to imagine what life would be like at his new school, he closed his eyes and smiled into his pillow, with thoughts of Hogwarts in his mind he drifted happily into a deep sleep.
“Sirius!”
The boy stirred in his sheets, he had somehow managed to get himself thoroughly tangled, his mothers grating, querulous voice drifted up from two floors below and he groaned.
“Sirius Orion Black! Get down here this instant and get ready for school!”
“Bloody hell...” Sirius muttered as he threw the covers off of himself and let his legs dangle over the edge of his magnificent bed. “Alright, mother! I’m up!” In a softer voice he added; “You old hag.”
When he reached the bottom of the stairs fully clothed and ready for his trip to Kings Cross his mother was waiting for him, he yawned and ran a hand through his thick black hair. “Is that what you’re wearing young man?” Walburga Black asked, eyeing her eldest son’s choice in attire with distaste.
“Mum, everyone will be wearing muggle clothes at Kings Cross.” He muttered irritably.
“Yes, but I expected you to have certain...standards.” She pursed her lips disapprovingly at Sirius’ baggy muggle t-shirt. “Why is there a picture of a-a...” Her voice faltered and Sirius barely managed to keep the smirk off his face. “...is that a naked woman?!” she hissed in outrage.
“It’s a human body, Merlin mother, anyone would think you had never seen one before!” He rolled his eyes dramatically and moved away towards the kitchen where breakfast was being made by Kreacher.
He sat down beside his brother, Regulus was munching on some toast and he turned to face his brother as he sat down. “What is that?!” He exclaimed with wide eyes.
Sirius grinned. “That is a naked girl, Reg.”
“B-But...you’re too young for that kind of stuff! What did mother say?”
Sirius shrugged, allowing Kreacher to pour him some tea. He stole the rest of Regulus’ toast and took a bite absently. “What can she do about it? I’m going to Hogwarts today.” He said after swallowing his mouthful.
Regulus’ face fell and he pushed a tomato around his plate mulishly. “Wish I was going.”
Sirius smiled and put a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry, you’ll be going next year.”
“But that’s ages away! I want to go now.”
“Sorry little brother.” Sirius shrugged. “Can’t do much about that.”
Platform nine and three quarters was packed with students, parents and the air filled with excited chatter mingled with animal noises. Sirius grinned excitedly as he pushed his trolley through the press of people, he gazed around at everything with awe and excitement on his face, silver eyes alight with curiosity. “Wow...” He breathed as saw the train idling and belching steam into the air. He turned to his brother who walked at his side. “It’s really happening, Reg!” He muttered, hopping excitedly from one foot to the other. “I’m really going! Can you believe it? I’m getting away from everything!” He threw his head back and let out a sharp bark of laughter that gained the attention of several older boys.
“Look, mum, I’m eleven years old now, I can push the damned trolley myself!”
Sirius and Regulus turned their heads to see a small, wiry boy with a shock of pitch black messy hair and expensive looking clothes. Beside him was a regal woman with a kind smile, she released the trolley and the boy took it, an owl hooted from within its cage on top of the pile of suitcases. The boy leaned all his weight on the thing and pushed with all his might, unfortunately it didn’t budge. He stopped, panting heavily and ruffled his hair up at the back, his nose wrinkled. “Alright, I suppose it’s too much...” he conceded.
The woman chuckled and took the Trolley. “At least you tried, James.” A man came up to their sides, beaming brilliantly at the boy.
“All ready then?”
“Of course, dad.” The boy called James said with a smile.
“Good lad, now, remember, which house do you want to be in?”
Sirius’ attention was pulled away from the family as a cold hand descended on his shoulder, he looked up into his mothers face, she was eyeing the family with open disgust. “Stay away from them, Sirius, do you hear me?”
Sirius raised an eyebrow. “Why?” He asked, gazing at the woman who was bent down and kissing her son on his cheek, making him flush and push her away in embarrassment. He frowned slightly as he took in her regal bearing, her long jet black hair and pale skin.
“Because they are filth, that is all you need to know.”
“Who is she?” Sirius insisted, turning back to his mother.
Walburga sneered. “Dorea Potter.” She spat. “A bloodtraitor. Now, get aboard before you cannot find a seat...” She began guiding Sirius towards the train, even as he tried to crane his neck to get a proper look at the family as they faded into the crowd behind them. “Ah! Lucius, darling!” Sirius’ head snapped back around as he spotted a boy of about fifteen pausing as he was waiting to get on the train.
“Walburga, how good to see you.” Lucius Malfoy said with a sickeningly smarmy grin, Sirius turned away, retching behind his hand for his brother’s amusement.
“Oh my! I see they made you prefect? A good choice, I do hope you continue on to Head Boy.”
Lucius smiled. “You are too kind, my job is made terribly hard when the school is filled with such...filth. Little Sirius will be joining us this year, how wonderful. I will be sure to welcome him to Slytherin House and extend him all the proper courtesies.”
Sirius bit down on his tongue to prevent himself from saying something stupid, he felt his brother at his side, and he slipped his hand through his. “Lucius.” Sirius said tightly in way of greeting.
“Now, on you go!” Walburga ushered her eldest son onto the train, Sirius let go of his brothers hand but felt a sharp tug on his t-shirt, he turned and saw tears in Regulus’ eyes. With a smile he hopped back down and embraced his brother. “We’ll see each other again, Reg. I’ll be back for summer, and I’ll write all the time, I promise!”
The train was moving as Sirius struggled down the corridor, peering into full compartments. He got some strange looks as he passed, he ignored it. Finally he found a compartment with only a single occupant, he slid back the door realising that this was the ‘Bloodtraitor brat’ his mother had mentioned. “Hi!” He said with a grin. “Can I sit?”
“Alright.” The boy smiled as Sirius put his trunk in the rack along with the cage holding his raven. When he sat down he extended his hand.
“Sirius Black, nice to meet you.”
“James Potter.” James took Sirius’ hand and shook it. “I saw you on the platform.” He said, leaning back comfortably against the seat.
Sirius nodded. “My mother said...” He paused but shook his head. “Actually, it doesn’t matter.” He decided he would sate his curiosity about Bloodtraitors and get to know this boy before announcing his family’s views.
James cocked his head to the side with a small frown. “Don’t I know the name Black?” He asked curiously.
Sirius smiled slowly. “Probably, most people do...famous family.”
James just nodded before getting out a brand new set of Exploding snap. “Wanna play?”
They entertained themselves for a long time, playing exploding snap. They were so engrossed in their game that they only gave the new occupant in their compartment a cursory glance, she was a red haired girl and appeared to be upset about something, but the two boys let her get on with her crying in peace. They chatted, joked and seemed to get on very well, Sirius found himself genuinely enjoying the Potter boys company and he felt a strange bubbling feeling, something he rarely felt and it took him a moment to realise he was actually happy.
When the strange, pallid looking boy entered the two boys ignored him as they had the girl until they began talking of School Houses...
**"But we're going!" he said, unable to suppress the exhilaration in his voice. "This is it! We're off to Hogwarts!" The girl nodded, mopping her eyes, but in spite of herself, she half smiled. "You'd better be in Slytherin," said the boy, encouraged that she had brightened a little.
At that name James perked up, Sirius watched him, lounging lazily in his seat. "Slytherin? Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" James turned to Sirius who felt a cold dread sink into him, he hid it.
"My whole family have been in Slytherin," Sirius said.
"Blimey," said James, "and I thought you seemed all right!"
Sirius grinned despite himself. "Maybe I'll break the tradition. Where are you heading, if you've got the choice?"
James lifted an invisible sword. “Gryffindor, ‘where dwell the brave at heart!' Like my dad." The other boy made a small, disparaging noise. James turned on him. "Got a problem with that?"
"No," he said, though his slight sneer said otherwise. "If you'd rather be brawny than brainy..."
"Where're you hoping to go, seeing as you're neither?" Sirius said casually with a small smirk.
James roared with laughter. The red headed girl sat up, rather flushed, and looked from James to Sirius in dislike.
"Come on, Severus, let's find another compartment."
"Oooooo..." James and Sirius imitated her lofty tone; James tried to trip the weird boy as he passed.
"See ya, Snivellus!" Sirius called through as they passed. James began to laugh loudly, he fell back into his seat until he had calmed down.**
The rest of the train ride was spent with the two boys mocking the boy called Severus, Sirius enjoyed it immensely and felt all the sudden nervousness about the Sorting be wiped away in gales of cruel laughter.
The school was everything he had imagined and more, as he gazed down the house tables surrounded by flickering candle light and the beautiful half moon hovering above his head in its cloudless, enchanted sky he felt an overwhelming sense of peace and realised that this was where he belonged, this was his real home. It never occurred to him that the sorting would happen so suddenly, as McGonagall set the stool down and began calling names time seemed to race by, Sirius wished he had more time, but suddenly the stern teacher was calling his name. He took a shaky breath and steeled himself against what was to come, he sat down on the seat and closed his eyes as the battered old hat dropped over his eyes.
“Hmm...this is interesting, very interesting indeed...”
Sirius almost threw the hat off of his head, the voice reached right into his mind and seemed to be actually plucking things from it.
“A good lot of courage in there, and more than enough cunning...Hmm...difficult indeed...you would do so well in Slytherin, like the rest of your family...perhaps...”
“No!” Sirius thought with all his might, beneath his robes he crossed his fingers. “Not Slytherin, anywhere but that! Please...”
“You are very intelligent...and powerful...very powerful...are you sure?”
“YES!”
“Very well then...it can only be...GRYFFINDOR!”
Sirius took off the hat, a huge grin spreading across his face as he practically leapt down the dais, James was there, lifting his hand and he met in a high five. “Yes!” He shouted and heard the applause of his fellow Gryffindors. With a happy grin he flopped down beside some seventh year and turned back to the front to watch his new friend be sorted. When it came time for James Potter to be sorted the hat hardly touched his head before it shouted Gryffindor, James stood quickly and ran down the aisle between tables, whooping and sliding in beside Sirius. They clasped hands again, congratulating each other.
Sirius could hardly believe it, as he tucked into a wonderful steak and ale pie and laughed at James’ jokes he felt free for the first time eleven years. Sirius Black was free of his family.
