Chapter 1 - Memory of the Soul
For some reason that Harry could not completely understand he had always felt close to the dead. It may have been because of his parents death, or all of the death during the final battle against Voldemort. Either way Harry had always felt closer to those who had died, than to those still among the living.
Then one day as he was reading the Daily Prophet he saw the weekly article on dark creatures. “Muggles in America have made certain dark creatures, such as Vampires and Shape-shifters legal citizens of the Unites States. Legal citizens with the right to vote, work, and even in the case of Vampires feed off of willing humans. There are even reports of Muggles with the power to raise the dead, which is clearly dark magic as all witches and wizards know very well....”
Harry sat there after reading the article staring at the picture that topped the column. It was a picture of a very attractive woman with jet black hair and light cream skin in a dress that would make me stop and stare even if she was not smiling. The other person in the photo was a man who was just a little taller than Harry, (he had hit his full height a few weeks before his eighteenth birthday), and had raven black hair to his shoulders and his face was extraordinary beautiful with his hypnotic midnight blue eyes.
Harry had a hard time looking away from the picture but eventually he did and was able to read the caption at the bottom. “ Federal Marshall Anita Blake with Jean-claude, Master Vampire of the City of St. Louis.”
Harry felt a tug in his soul when he looked back at the picture. A tug that could only mean one thing, he needed to be a part of that place and energy. “I wonder what the ministry would think of their golden child if I were to join with the dark creatures they so damn in America?” Harry said to himself in a amused voice. But the idea and need for such a place was already deep in his soul, all Harry had to do was listen and follow along. He never wanted the spotlight he was in due to his killing Voldemort. It turned even his best friends against him for the way he did it. Harry missed Ron and Hermione, but he knew that they were happy together and did not want anything to do with him.
His eighteenth birthday was just over a week ago, so he was a legal adult in the Muggle world. Getting a residence and job in St. Louis would not be much of a deal, but first he would have to go to Gringotts to see about getting some muggle money.
Since he did not want to be found easily by anyone of the wizarding world, Harry decided that he was going to travel like a muggle on an airplane. He would also need to find a home there, but to begin with he would just stay at a hotel.
Harry sat the paper down on his kitchen table and walked up to his bedroom to get dressed for what he knew would be one of his last days in England.
… … …. … … …. … … …. … …
As soon as Harry apparated into Diagon Alley people stopped and stared, some even went so far as to come up to him and bow all the while muttering their thanks for his defeating Voldemort. Slowly moving towards his destination of Gringotts, Harry had just gotten past the apothecary when someone yelled out for him to stop. Turning around quickly, Harry saw Neville striding through the crowd to catch up to him. Harry could not suppress the smile on his face at seeing his new best friend, he quickly looked through the crowd for Luna. Neville and Luna had gotten together right before the final battle and were the only two people who did not become either repulsed by Harry, or enraptured by him. Harry looked forward to the times that he could just sit and talk to them without interruptions from the press or other people who wished to see Harry Potter defeater of he-who-must-not-be-named.
Neville was finally standing right next to Harry. “Harry it is great that I caught you here in Diagon Alley, Luna said that we should visit you today because you had something you needed to talk to us about. I don't exactly know what she was talking about, but her eyes got all white so it must be important you know.”
Harry did know what Neville was talking about. With Luna being a very powerful seer keeping anything from her was difficult. Harry felt a pang of guilt as he realized that he was just going to up and leave those two without so much as a goodbye. “Yes that sounds great, why don't you guys come over at about five or so, ok.? I will explain everything to you there. Im sorry I cant say more right now but there are to many ears around here.” Harry finished with his gaze going to the crowd of people that were edging their way forward but were still just out of earshot.
Neville's eyes followed Harry's to the crowd and got a disgusted look on his face. “Ok Harry I will tell Luna you said hi.” Again his eyes went to the crowd. “It is a shame when you cant even stop and talk to a friend on the street without a bunch of bloody idiots trying to shove into your conversations.” And with a final glare of disgust at the people he smiled at Harry and walked away.
It must have taken Harry another fifteen minutes to finally get inside of Gringotts because of all the 'Idiots' talking and bowing to him. After the giant doors closed behind him, he took a moment to straighten his clothes and try to smooth down his untamed hair.
With purpose in his step, Harry walked up to the first goblin that was available and stood there until he was acknowledged. “And what is you business at Gringotts today, Mr. Potter.?” The goblin asked in a voice that sounded like two stones being rubbed together.
“I wish to talk to my vault manager privately please.” Harry responded.
“Very well, please go down that hall there.” The goblin pointed at the east hall. “Knock on the fifth door on the left.” And with that the goblin went back to work on whatever it was that goblins did in their jobs.
With a thank you, Harry went down the indicated all and counted the big wooden doors on the left until he was standing in front of on that had a golden name plate that said 'Griphook' on it. Harry quickly knocked the knocker against the door in a rapid beat.
“Enter” came the voice of Griphook from inside. Harry opened the door and walked in, crossing the small room to stand before the diminutive goblin. With a casual wave of his hand, Griphook invited Harry to sit in the comfortable looking chair that was also in front of the desk.
Harry sat down as Griphook started to talk. “What is it that you needed to talk to me privately about, Mr. Potter?”
“I am interested in ways of converting some of my money into muggle money, also of having a way to get at my funds outside of the bank without actually coming here every time.”
Griphook just stared at Harry while he spoke. “We can handle both of those problems Mr. Potter.” Griphook reached into his desk and came back out with a black tri-fold wallet.
“This is a bankers wallet Mr. Potter. It will allow you to draw out money from your vaults in whatever form you need it. Be that muggle money, wizarding currency, or even checks. This is a handy thing to have if you are going to be in the muggle community for a while because it is not able to be stolen, it will always come back to you one way or another and muggles will not notice the small amounts of magic that it uses when you do decide to use it.” Harry took the small wallet and held it in his hands. At first he thought he was imagining it when it started to grow warmer in his hands. After a few moments it cooled off again and just sat there in his outstretched hand.
“What was that?” Harry asked quietly. He could still feel the tingling of the wallet.
“That was the wallet, it was getting to know you so that its enchantments would work only for you. Even if someone was to be able to steal and keep it, without your blood they would never be able to get anything out of it.” Griphook explained politely. “Now to other business, your vaults have been consoladated and and exact count of your assets will be sent to you by owl soon. Is there anything else that I can help you with Mr. Potter?”
“No, Thank you Griphook you have been more than helpful.” Harry said with a nod as he stood and held out his hand to shake that of the goblins.
“Thank you Mr. Potter, for your generous business and for treating my as an equal as you always do.” Griphook returned the handshake with a firm grasp. With that done Harry left Gringotts and went to the leaky cauldron so that he could continue with the second step of his plan.
