38 Year old Hermione Weasley sat at the kitchen table with downcast eyes as her husband chomped down on pizza. Hermione was the one who had insisted on incorporating aspects of Muggle culture into their daily lives and muggle food was the easiest way to get Ron to agree to her scheme. That had been years ago, she reflected with a small smile, when things had been less complicated. During the post-war times when she had clung onto normalcy and routine, both the muggle and magical world had been recovering from the effects of the Dark Lord's reign; she had found Ron to be the only constant thing in her life.
Even Harry had changed from the vibrant young boy Hermione had met during their early Hogwarts years, to an isolated member of society. "I can't stand having any more cameras in my face Hermione", he had told her shortly after his marriage to Ginny. "Everything about my life's known to the public. I'm fed up of being in the limelight. The prophecy's fulfilled…now I just want some quiet time with Ginny". Hermione had nodded despite her worry that he would become a recluse and hadn't seen much of him until his son was born. But now that he was the father of three, Harry had reverted back to his old self and, if anything, was more carefree than ever. Ron had been the one who stood by her, supporting her while the world around her changed and rearranged itself. Hermione remembered the romantic dinners he had prepared…well organised. Molly would never have let him actually do the cooking while she was around! Everything had been perfect. It was after Harry's son James was born that Ron had suggested tentatively that they should settle down too.
Hermione hadn't thought twice, despite her parents soft questions on whether she was truly ready for this. Maybe her parents had been right. There was one person who always made her question whether she had married Ron out of love or guilt. It wasn't a thought she liked to dwell on. She had married Ron, had two beautiful children and, after acquiring a Charms degree, had thought no further about finding employment, settling into the domestic routine that Ron and his mum expected of her.
It was only now, years later, after her first-born Rose had settled into her first year at Hogwarts that Hermione became aware of how droll her existence had become.
She looked up at Ron, now on his second pizza, oblivious to the conflicting thoughts in her head. She loved him, Hermione reminded herself trying to push down the irrational surge of anger that threatened to envelop her, he was her husband and he loved her more than anyone else.
But she couldn't stop herself from feeling disappointed with her lot in life. The cleverest witch of her age HA- what a joke that had become. Instead of pursuing a career with her charms degree, she had tried to please her in-laws and Hermione was only beginning to realise now that she wasn't made for a life of domesticity. No, that wasn't true.
She'd had doubts before, several times but only one person still reminded her of them, made her question every second she spent with her husband. This person had helped her to put her shattered life back piece by piece, encouraged her to get a degree and had tempted her to cross a sacred line despite all she had at stake. Malfoy. Hermione never dared to think of his first name while in Ron's presence. Although she knew he wasn't capable of performing Legilimency, the feeling of guilt that surfaced every time she thought of him would stop her thought processes. Malfoy gave her some of the happiest moments in her life and she only felt guilty when in Ron's presence. What did that make her? And if Ron ever found out…
Pulling herself back to the present, Hermione focused on the task ahead.
"Ron?" she started, unsure how to voice her idea. "Yeah?" Ron answered, his eyes never leaving his food. "Um…I was thinking, now that Rose is at Hogwarts and Hugo in school…" she trailed off at Ron's derisive snort. "What?" she demanded.
"School? They don't teach anything useful in that muggle school! We should've kept him at home until he started Hogwarts, like we did with Rose. That's what I wanted" Ron continued to chew with a vengeance.
"Nothing useful!" Hermione had to make an effort not to screech, "They teach him plenty of useful skills. He has to be exposed to both the muggle and wizarding culture, Ron. It's only because you and your mother insisted that I kept Rose at home".
Ron just rolled his eyes at her. "Anyway, I was thinking about looking for a job", Hermione said, her nervousness fading as her anger grew.
"WHAT?" Ron nearly spat out his food, eyeing her with concern, "You feeling okay Mione?"
"I'm perfectly fine thank you Ronald. I don't think Hugo or Rose needs me around constantly like they did when they were both younger. So I think I'll look for a job in the Ministry of Magic. I saw an advert about them needing a new Charms expert".
"Hermione", Ron continued as though she had not spoken, "Hugo still needs you around and Rose will too when she's home for the holidays. And what about me?"
"What about you?" Hermione asked, trying to understand his reluctance, "You're at work with the Aurors all day".
"Yeah so who's gonna cook for me and do my laundry and…" he trailed off at Hermione's glare.
"For God's sake Ronald, it's not like I'm moving out! Getting a part-time job isn't going to affect anyone! Either way, I've already submitted my application. I'm just waiting for an interview now!"
Ron looked flabbergasted that she would even consider working an option. "You're kidding right Mione?" he asked with a gulp, "You aren't really going to work are you?" "Of course I am! And if you really love me as much as you claim to, you would be supportive and encouraging of my decision!" Ron just shook his head and got up from the table. "I'm gonna go back to the office. Maybe catch up with Harry later. Might be late home", he mumbled before apparating out of the house.
Almost simultaneously, another crack of apparation was heard and the cloak-laden, distinguished form of Lucius Malfoy appeared by the kitchen door. "Lucius!" Hermione gasped in shock, "He could have seen you! What were you thinking?" Lucius chucked quietly and leant against the doorway, arms folded across his chest. "I was hoping to spice up your morning", he said with an arched eyebrow as Hermione blushed crimson. But what could she say? He was acting so familiar with her because he was familiar to her and she to him. The sad truth was, 19 years after Harry Potter had defeated Lord Voldemort, Hermione Granger was his right-hand man Lucius Malfoy's mistress! How times changed!
