Disclaimer: I own nothing from the Harry Potter world. They belong to JKR and I make no money from this story. |
So this is a small scene set after A Conjugal Visit. Lucius has escaped Azkaban and Narcissa finds him during a private moment. Oddly for me there is no smut in this one but a tender snap shot of my favourite couple in the cannon. More smut soon. Promise. The piece of music I had in mind when reading this was Nearer my God to Thee, music by Lowell Mason, 1856. No relevance to the story but the flow of the music I felt matched the emotions of the characters. You will probably associate it with the film Titanic. It is the last piece the band play as the ship sinks. This was the version I used as inspiration.

Music
Narcissa Malfoy woke gently but did not open her eyes. A soft humming pulse roused her unconscious mind. It was a thrumming rhythm that was familiar to her, though through her sleepiness she could not place it. She stretched out under the sheets, rolling over to feel herself alone in the bed. She sighed, her eyes still closed. It was him. He was playing again. She opened her eyes to look at her hand resting in the hollow of the pillow on the other side of the bed.
She could hear voices down stairs. A bang. The house itself seemed to give a shudder. It was not happy since the Malfoy's new house guest had imposed himself upon them. It made a certain amount of tactical sense granted, but Narcissa was on the side of the house. She didn’t want the Dark Lord and his minions in her family home. The house seemed to understand its owners unwillingness to play host and having been a magical home for many hundreds of years it had a few tricks up its sleeve. Doors moved from time to time, or disappeared on one side but not the other. Rooms sealed themselves at awkward moments. The house was not silly enough to anger the Dark Lord directly but Greyback in particular found himself inconvenienced more than once in a while. The house seemed to have the same revulsion for the werewolf that Narcissa did. And the house was kind to its owners. As Narcissa wandered the halls while meetings were being held she would open doors to what she thought were spare rooms or store rooms only to find herself in Draco’s childhood nursery exactly as she remembered and laid out would be his baby robes, photos and drawings he had done. It was as though the house had stored the memory of the way things were and was making a point. She would sit for hours looking through her family’s photo albums, seeing Lucius smiling as Draco took his first steps. Was it really that long ago that they were happy? It felt an eternity away now. She would hear people walking past the door but it seemed as though the other side of the door looked like the wall to them so she was not disturbed.
Right now the house was providing a respite for its lord and master. She opened her eyes and the humming became stronger. It was calling to her. The house was urging her to go to him. She sat up and smiled. ‘Okay, okay, I’m up’, she said softly into the room. Her dressing room door opened. She loved living here.
She dressed quickly in a simple robe of pale blue and brushed out her hair. There was no need to stand on ceremony where she was going. She quietly opened the bedroom door and slowly made her way through the house. She was not sure where he would be. The house would have secreted him away in some quiet corner but all she would need to do would be to follow her intuition and the house would lead her there. She opened her door and immediately felt like left was the direction to go. To the right was a staircase that lead to the hallway and dining room. That’s where her guests would be. Left it was then. Down the corridor, taking another left when it split in two. The sound was getting louder, assuring her that she was going the right way. She knew that sound now, thought she’d not heard it for months and months. It was a violin expertly played by her husband. The slow, haunting melody was now becoming clear to her and the further she walked into the heart of the house the clearer it got. The end of this branch of the corridor ended in a spiral staircase up to the third floor of the house and if she was very much mistaken, it had not been there before today.
She trusted it though, knowing the house was ensuring they would not be disturbed. As she reached out to hold the banister it felt warm under her hand and almost like it was happy to see her. The door at the top of the stairs was slightly ajar as she reached it and through the gap she could see him. He had his back to the door and was swaying side to side with the music as he bowed the violin. He stood tall now, not slumped like he had been so often in recent weeks and even though she could not see his face she knew his eyes would be closed and his face would be relaxed. He was never more at peace than when he was playing.
She did not dare disturb him yet. Instead she just watched as he was absorbed further and further into the music. He was pure pleasure to behold as anyone is when indulging in their greatest passion. The piece was one they had danced to at their wedding, once upon a time when life seemed like a game they could only win. They were so blessed then. She had felt radiant that day and he had never looked more hansom, every inch the lord of the manor he was born to be. It was a bit of an unconventional choice for music at a wizarding wedding but Narcissa had insisted as she had loved the piece since she was a little girl studying the ladylike pursuit of music. One had to admit that there were some things muggles did occasionally get right.
Magic had its place though. As the piece progressed the rest of a string quartet joined the solo violin and even though it was just Lucius playing the other instruments could be heard playing with him as the music grew.
She closed her eyes now and was there at their wedding dance as if she were a spectator at the side of the dancefloor watching the happy couple slowly sway and revolve in time with the pulsing rhythm yet still feeling the joy she felt as his arms carried her round. Completely safe and totally free. No feeling on earth or above it could have compared to the happiness she felt as he spun her out under his arm to the tip of his fingers, the bottom of her skirts twirling out around her and her free arm continuing the graceful arch they formed.
Then magic once again stirred and the whole string section could be heard playing with Lucius in the small attic room. It was almost too much for the confined space and it shook her heart. She opened her eyes to find him looking back at her through the gap in the door, smiling softly with a look in his eyes that said ‘I know where you went then my love’. She pushed the door open and walked towards him as he stepped away from his instrument which kept playing, suspended in mid air, the full compliment of strings still playing with it. He held out his hand to her and she took it gratefully as he pulled her into his arms, standing tall and slipped his other hand around her waist, bringing her up to her full height and she smiled weakly, remembering the lady she used to be. They danced, perfectly formally and elegantly though they had no audience and as the last few bars of the tune played out he spun her out under his arm, as though he had seen her earlier thoughts. Her robes twirled out and her arm continued the flow of movement before he pulled her back from the brink, back into his embrace.
As the final note wavered and faded they stood facing each other.
‘Dearest heart,’ Lucius murmured as he brought her hand up to his lips to softly kiss between her first and second knuckles, letting his lips linger there and closing his eyes. ‘How did we get here?’
She brought her free hand to their joined ones and squeezed. Suddenly they could not be close enough and they held each other in a violent embrace, burying their faces in blond hair, not quite knowing whose was whose.
