It was the first time that Ginny had stayed the night sitting by Harry’s bedside.
This was surprising seeing as how many times Harry had been sick or injured, (she loathed thinking about that), and due to the fact that she was his girlfriend.
Yet it was true, and she couldn’t say that she’d been missing out. It wasn’t like she had a choice though. When the healers had finally declared him stable and she was allowed to go to him…
She didn’t think she’d ever forget the look in his eyes, she was certain it would haunt her nightmares for the rest of her life. She had seen him after the graveyard, comforted him after Sirius’ and Dumbledore’s deaths, and she had never seen Harry so… dead.
One of the many things she loved about Harry was that no matter what happened, he would never allow himself to stay down. For the first time in her life, she was afraid that whatever had happened to him had broken him.
Yet, when his eyes met hers she could swear that she saw the tiniest hint of a sparkle, a glimmer of her Harry, and that gave her hope. He had asked her to stay, the only thing he had said. He couldn’t even muster an ‘I’m fine’. How could she refuse him?
The truth was that Ginny would do anything to make Harry happy. Sometimes her team members on the Harpies would rib her for it, calling her ‘whipped’, but she couldn’t deny that if Harry knew the effect he had on her, he would have her eating out of the palm of his hand.
If she had to deprive herself of sleep by sitting in an uncomfortable chair all night, then so be it. It would be worth it if it helped Harry come back to her. She knew though that if even half of what the healers said was true, it would take a long time for Harry to completely heal.
She shuddered as she remembered being told what had happened to him.
-----
“He’s listed you as his next of kin.”
“I’m sorry?” Ginny sputtered.
“Mr. Potter’s listed you as his next of kin, this means… we can tell you what he’s been through.” The healer explained.
“Oh.” Ginny breathed, she had no idea…
“Do you understand? Mr. Potter put you in his confidence. Should he be unable to make medical decisions for any reason, you’ll be able to act as his surrogate.”
Ginny nodded, paling. “What happened to him?”
The healer seemed sick. “As far as we can tell, for almost the entire week he’s been missing; he hasn’t eaten anything. Scans of nerve damage suggest that he’s been under a dangerous amount of exposure the the cruciatus curse.” He paused.
“He had multiple severe fractures, which have been healed. The most serious of these was a splinter from his ribcage lodging itself into his lung. He has bruises and lacerations covering his body. We healed these, though some of the injuries have left scaring, suggesting that they were caused by dark magic.”
She could tell by his voice that the worst was yet to come, though she couldn’t imagine what could be worse than what she had already been told. “What else?”
“Bruising around his anus suggest that he has been raped multiple times.”
His words brought on silence as their implication infiltrated her brain. Suddenly she felt like thowing up. She didn’t even realize the healer bring up a trash bag before she was retching in it. Thankfully she hadn’t been eating much since Harry had disappeared, so there wasn’t much to expel from her stomach.
“We can heal all of the physical damage he has sustained, save for the scars and whatever permanent damage he may have received from the cruciatus curse, but mentally and emotionally… I’d recommend a mind healer, but ultimately the choice will be Harry’s.”
-------
The rest of the conversation had been a blur. In fact, the rest of the day had been a blur. She knew Hermione and the entire Weasley family had visited Harry, but the procession of people had passed by her unnoticed save for the fact that he tensed up whenever one of her brothers or father got near him.
Harry had taken her hand when she offered it, and had clasped it in death grip the entire day until he fell into a potion induced sleep. That was the extent of her attention.
She must have fallen asleep at some point, because she woke up to a sniffling sound.
She soon realized it was Hermione, looking over at Harry, silently sobbing.
“You know?” Ginny asked softly.
The look on Hermione’s face told her all she needed to know. “I was looking over the mission report.” She managed, before bursting into tears. Of course she would have, Hermione had transferred over to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement so that she could watch over her boys, as she herself had put it.
Ginny rushed her into a hug, tears coming to her eyes as well as she realized she hadn’t cried once in the entire past week.
“I-its not fair!” Hermione stammered “Why can’t Harry just be happy for once! H-hasn’t he had enough already!”
Ginny had to agree with her friend “I know. I just hate this, I hate seeing him so lost.” Tears were now streaming down her face uncontrolled. Like a dam breaking, all the emotions from the past week and past few hours come pouring out.
“I-I just want to help him”
------
It turned out that having Hermione helping her was very fortunate. She had spent nearly an hour talking about all she had read on psychology about cases of male rape. Men would scare him, which explained why he was so tense around the other Weasleys. He would likely be averse to intimate situations; Ginny was smart enough to realize that on her own. Energetic or enthusiastic behavior might be perceived as aggressive; Ginny was very glad for that piece of advice.
True to Hermione’s predictions, Harry was more skittish than she ever remembered him being, particularly when it came to men.
Harry had panicked when he learned that both she and Hermione knew about what happened to him, and had made them promise not to tell anyone else. Ginny had considered arguing with him on that; shouldn’t the rest of his family know what he was going through so they could help? In the end though, she knew that telling them would probably do more harm than good, it would be up to Harry to tell them when he was ready.
Ginny was leaving the hospital room for lunch, having to be practically pulled by Hermione, when the pair heard Luna.
She was standing just outside the door, sobbing softly. “Oh Luna, you heard everything, didn’t you?” Hermione sighed.
A dejected nod was the only answer they got. The two girls led their friend away without question; lunch was filled with talking and a lot of tears.
------
“I’m sorry Harry, I didn’t mean to overhear I just heard, I’m sorry.” Luna babbled “Please don’t stop being my friend.” The last part added in a very small voice that was entirely uncharacteristic of her.
Harry’s glare evaporated immediately. “I- I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have gotten mad.” He had always had a soft spot for his eccentric friend.
Luna lunged to engulf Harry in a hug, which caused him to flinch horribly and curl up into a ball. Luna sprang back, apologizing profusely yet again. Harry turned his face away from the worried gazes of his two other friends. He felt humiliated and vulnerable and weak.
Ginny, realizing what Harry must be feeling put on a brave face and acted as if nothing had happened.
It was somewhere in the middle of describing the spectacular row that Ron and Hermione had that Ginny realized her mistake. Harry sank into his bed defeated. Ginny took his hand and he squeezed back vigorously.
“I’m sorry about you and Ron, ‘Mione.” He murmured guiltily.
“It’s not your fault, Harry.” Hermione said firmly “Me and Ron… we’ve been having problems for a while. You getting captured was the catalyst, not the cause. This would have happened anyway.”
Harry sighed but let it go. He looked more tired and lost than ever.
Ginny’s heart twanged. Out of instinct, she lifted herself onto the bed and wrapped Harry in a gentle embrace.
Harry stiffened almost violently when she first made contact, but Ginny didn’t move away. She held still until Harry relaxed and the continued to slowly move her arms until she was wrapped around him.
Harry seemed to collapse into her, clinging onto her for dear life. Soft sobs were wrenched from him as tears poured down his face. Ginny didn’t say anything; she just hugged him back for all she was worth. They had both forgotten about Hermione and Luna, who had left the room.
--------
It saddened Ginny to see that Harry’s discomfort around men was putting a wedge between him and her family. Bill, Charlie, and Percy had not been perturbed by this. While they liked Harry, they didn’t know him that well.
George and her Dad had understood better, her Dad perhaps too much. He had walked up to her one evening as she watched over Harry sleeping and asked “Was it as bad for him as I think it was?”
“Worse.” Ginny had replied. Her dad nodded gravely, deep sorrow in his eyes. He had stood by Harry’s bedside for a few minutes, just watching him sadly. Then he left.
Her mom had almost the worst reaction. Her first instinct was to smother Harry, but Harry reacted very badly to her attempts at affection. Ginny could just imagine that her bone crushing hugs now seemed like a strangling grip.
Ron, naturally, had taken his skittishness personally. After one of the few times Ginny had left Harry’s side, she had returned to find Ron yelling at him.
“You’re taking her side in this!” Ron snarled just as she had walked through the door. Harry had his gaze fixed firmly in his lap. “At least look me in the eye! Look me in the eye Potter!”
That seemed to trigger something in Harry, his eyes glazed over, his breathing became quick and shallow and the heart-rate monitor went berserk.
Not moments later, a pair of mediwizards rushed into the room. Ginny didn’t need them to realize what has happening. It was exactly as how Hermione described a flashback to be.
Ignoring the healers, Ginny rushed towards Harry’s side. “It’s okay love, it’s over, come back to me Harry.” She whispered, stroking his hair.
Slowly, Harry calmed down, until his eyes finally focused back on her. Tears welled up in them as his eyes met hers. Ginny brushed them away tenderly with her fingertips as they slid down his cheeks.
Ron stepped back with wide eyes, he looked… afraid. “What did I do?”
“You triggered a flashback! Can’t you see he’s been through enough already! Why couldn’t you just control yourself for once you, you-” She gave up trying to find a suitable insult. “No. Just get out of here.”
Ron didn’t move, he didn’t say anything.
“OUT!” Ginny roared, brandishing her wand.
Ron squeaked and backed out of the room.
--------
Later that day, Hermione delivered the news that she and Ron were officially over. Harry didn’t even bother apologizing; he just looked at Hermione sadly. Ginny hated that look, his eyes were so… tired.
“Every time Ron does something like this” Harry said hoarsely “I tell myself that it’s the last time that he’ll be like that. After he thought I put my name in the Goblet of Fire and when he left us on the horcrux hunt… I told myself it wouldn’t happen again. There’s a certain point where you have to stop telling yourself that.”
Ginny and Hermione were somewhat shocked by Harry’s admission. This was probably the most he’d spoken ever since he’d been captured.
“I don’t know” Hermione muttered “I keep hoping he’ll come to his senses and realize what he’s giving up, but I don’t think I can take much more of… this.”
Ginny remained stony. He may be her brother, but Ron had hurt Harry (and Hermione too for that matter), again, when he most needed the support of his family. Ron didn’t know the specifics of what had happened, but wasn’t the look in his eyes enough? Couldn’t Ron see how vulnerable his supposed best mate was?
Harry and Hermione too had gone silent. Hermione looked contemplative, Harry sad and tired.
“Harry…” Hermione murmured, before walking up to him and touching his forearm. “Is it okay if I hug you?”
Harry’s eyes shone as he nodded and Ginny felt a rush of affection for her bushy haired friend. Hermione engulfed him in a fierce hug that Harry returned. Ginny almost felt like an outsider, looking in on the loss of two members of the golden trio for their third.
Harry met her eyes over Hermione’s shoulder, and Ginny knew immediately what he needed. She wasn’t the odd one out at all. Ginny joined them in their embrace on Harry’s bed. She hugged Harry from the back, resting her chin on his shoulder.
The three of them fell asleep like that, Ginny was just glad that the healers had made an exception to their normally strict hospitals rules. Apparently Harry’s emotional recovery was more important than his physical one at this point.
-----------
Hermione woke up the next morning to the feeling of something poking her in the thigh. What was that? Her brain was just waking up, and couldn’t really process what sensations she was getting. The poking wasn’t unpleasant; in fact she had felt something like it before. Unconsciously, she shifted against the poking thing, it actually felt nice… she shifted again, pressing herself against it…
Oh! Now she remembered from when she had slept with Ron over the night! It was morning wood! Quickly, her brain made another connection, this was Harry! She felt herself flush a deep red, and jumped away as if being scalded. Of course, this resulted in her falling out of bed.
Thankfully, Harry didn’t wake up, though Ginny was awake. Hermione abashedly stood up, and noticed Ginny smirking. “Not used to morning wood are you?” She teased.
Hermione sputtered incoherently, and Ginny’s eyes sparkled in amusement. She could swear she heard Ginny giggle, giggle, as she retreated from the room.
Thoughts rushed through her head at lightning speed. Was Harry attracted to her? Of course not, morning wood was natural, it helped men maintain blood flow to… those areas overnight. It doesn’t mean he’s not attracted to you though.
Why wasn’t Ginny angry? Was it because she trusted she and Harry implicitly? That must be it; she was fine with the two of them spending weeks alone in a tent together.
That only left her actions in this predicament. Before she had become fully aware of herself, she had… well she’d done things only Ginny should be allowed to do with him. She had liked it before she had realized the situation. Distantly, a forbidden part of her mind noted that Harry’s erection was larger than Ron’s was.
Shock flooded through Hermione. I did NOT just think that! But there the thought was, once it had occurred, it couldn’t be erased.
She tried to distract herself from all thoughts of Harry and his erection, but it was futile to purposefully avoid thinking about something, since immediately that thought went to the forefront of her mind.
Her day was a strenuous one to say the least. She had hoped that work would distract her from these thoughts, but it turned out to be the other way around.
What was wrong with her? She had never had this problem with Ron before, or for that matter any boy! She had never really wanted to go that far with anybody. She was certain that both Harry and Ginny were virgins as well… she froze.
Harry wasn’t a virgin, not anymore. That thought alone stopped those sexual musings in their tracks. Harry had just been through hell! How could she be thinking like this?
She somehow knew that even though she had driven those thoughts from the forefront of her mind, they were still there, waiting for the opportunity to come back out.
