Chapter 1
Severus was unsure what was more annoying, the fact that there was enough sweets on the table to feed and army or the fact that so much had been consumed that his colleagues were becoming prattling children. Severus looked down at his Ice cream, he wasn’t one for sweet often but he did enjoy a little sugar once in a while but with so much of it going around it was just making him sick to his stomach. Pushing the bowl away he sat up in his chair and looked about the school, he was uninterested in the children of his school and more interested in the children of the others.
Great young men sat with strait backs, dressed in red and cloaked in fur they looked like a force to be reckoned with and then there were the lithe blue clad ladies, very much the princess like girls but he knew their magic made them just as deadly as they were pretty. There was something that was bothering him though, like a needle in the back of his mind he couldn’t quite put his finger on.
Severus rubbed at his temples and rubbed his eyes before he tried to pay attention to what Karkaroff was saying to him, failing miserably.
‘Severus,’ The sound hit him like a brick against his ribs and he was suddenly winded, his mind whirled in on itself and he almost collapsed completely as his heart pounded against his ribs.
“Severus?” Albus looked up as he saw his Potions Master catch his breath, hand clutching his chest as though he were in pain. “Severus, are you alright my boy?”
“Fine,” Severus said simply as he shook himself off, ‘Severus’ The voice was louder, muffled as if speaking through dense glass but it winded him again all the same.
“Severus!” this time it was Poppy who had called out and headed over to the dark man, he was leaning against the table, his knuckles white from clutching the wood and he had nearly gone grey he was so pale. “Severus say something.”
“Severus,” This time the voice was real and Severus’s head snapped up so fast Poppy feared whiplash before she turned her gaze to the speaker and the hall fell quiet.
A lithe man stood at the large double door with a soft look on his face. He was tall and elegantly dressed in thick, green velvet robes and dark brown boots. He had long black hair, pleated in a rope that fell over his shoulder and down his chest, the end sweeping at his hip lazily. Dark, dazzling brown eyes looked endlessly up at the teacher’s table, catching a pair of dark black ones that belonged to his darker image. Children were in shock as they looked between the stranger at the door and the Potions Master, the twin faces frozen in a sense of serenity and absolute shock.
“Samuel,” Severus’s voice was rough and he sat up right the best he could but he could not wipe the look of sudden need that was growing in his eyes, the need that was in his soul, a link long shattered so painfully that it was trying to force itself fixed. Samuel was showing no signs of struggle as he swept towards the teacher’s table and smiled softly at Albus.
“Samuel you minx,” Albus chuckled and motioned him over and the man complied, seating himself between Albus and Minerva while Poppy was still standing behind the Potions Master like an over protective hen.
“Samuel insisted on coming with us,” Madam Maxine spoke “I had to get a new teacher just to replace him for the year, said he wanted to see his brother.”
“Yes, well, after fifteen years of neglect I thought I should come down and visit,” Samuel turned his gaze on Severus who didn’t even turn his gaze to meet his, “Twins shouldn’t be separated after all.”
“Excuse me,” Severus stood abruptly and rushed from the Great Hall the best he could without making it seem like he was fleeing the place.
“Now what was that about?” Minerva asked and laughter drifted over the students like a swarm of butterflies over flowers, soft, smooth and deep.
“Severus is scared of me,” Samuel explained, “Poor little brother, forgets that we are not two but one,” He sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose, he ripping of their bond had not only effected Severus and Samuel felt a head ache coming on.
“Go after him Sam, he needs you,” Minerva said with a smile and Samuel gave her a relieved look before he stood and headed out the door, usually tracking Severus was easy, a simply tug on their link and a map was drawn out before his feet, now he had to use a locator spell just to figure out which direction he tore off too.
“Back to your cave in the dark, tsk, Severus,” Samuel sighed as he headed towards the dungeons.
Severus was seated on the couch, his robe brought about his frame like a security blanket, his head was pounding and his heart more so but with the fire whiskey burning his throat and dampening his mind he was feeling better.
“Drowning away your sorrow’s brother?” Severus was up on his feet with his wand in his hand, his glass fell to the floor, shattering and Severus looked at his brother with wide eyes. Samuel held up his hands in peace, watching his brother’s face go from scared to angry in seconds.
“How did you get in here?” He demanded and Samuel laughed softly,
“We may not be able to read each other anymore Severus, but I can guess your darkest secrets, and the password to your door, although it took several tried, and a few old forgotten potions, to get it right,” Samuel clicked his tongue as he saw the broken glass and walked over, Severus moved aside as his brother took out his wand and gave it a wave. “You should be more careful.”
“You shouldn’t sneak up on people,” Severus countered and Samuel turned, his wand rested against the high bones of his cheek, white and pale against the soft golden color of his brother’s face.
“I shouldn’t be sneaking up on you at all Severus,” Samuel said, “You should have sensed me.”
“Well I didn’t,” Severus snapped as his own wand, black and dark like the man who carried it, found its place back up its master’s sleeve.
“Well you should have,” Samuel said “That’s what I am getting at,” He placed his own wand back in its holster at his hip, watching his brother with cautious eyes. Severus turned to glare at his brother and was not surprised when he met the very same look directed back at him.
“Get out,”
“No,” Samuel hissed “Fifteen years Severus, fifteen years I tried to get something from you, a letter, a visit even gone as far as to threaten you, but you never responded Severus, I am desperate.”
“Get out!” Severus tried again and Samuel growled at him,
“Damn it Severus!” He snapped and stepped closer to him but saw the other man’s fingers twitch, his wand merely a flick away from being back in its master’s hand.
“Samuel, I will not tell you again, get out and don’t come back here,” Severus watched his twin’s face, his own face, twist in something between hate, anger and sheer agony. The older twin turned his back on Severus and headed for the door, but stopped and braced himself against the frame as that fragile link between the twins twisted and wretched, reaching out to its other half. Severus was trembling on the other side of the room, leaning back against the wall so not to fall unceremoniously to the ground.
“This will get worse Severus, and I’m not leaving the school,” Samuel rasped and Severus shook as he looked at the back of Samuel’s head before his brother left, robes fluttering along behind him.
Severus let himself slide down the wall and sat there, breathing steadily to urge his heart back in to his chest and out of his throat. Fifteen years of solitude and self-pity and now this, his brother forcing that damn bond back in to his life, something he couldn’t afford to have. Something twisted and Severus’s heart damn near stopped and Severus choked on his very breath, even the thought of getting rid of Samuel made his body react like it would starve.
“Damn you Samuel,” Severus hissed, unknowing that his brother, on the other side of the school was cursing him the exact same way.
