Chapter 1- I’m a What?

Draco Malfoy dropped his head in his hands. He couldn’t believe what his father just told him. Everything he thought, everything he preached had just been demolished in the three words his father just uttered. We are Veela.

The Malfoy line was descended from the the Angliae branch of Veelas, and had therefore escaped much of the notoriety that had been brought to other Veela clans, including the ones who acted as mascots for the Bulgarian Quidditch team. According to his father, the Angliae branch had intermarried so many times that Draco was the last remaining single Angliae Veela left in existence. The last marriage to exist between two Veela was Draco’s own grandfather, Abraxas Malfoy. Lucius had broken tradition when he married Narcissa, becoming the first Malfoy to marry outside the Veela clan. Narcissa herself had not known the true identity of her new husband until a year after they were wed, when Lucius turned 18 and came into his true Veela heritage.

Although Draco had another year and a half until he underwent the change making him a full Veela, he would start seeing some of the changes starting tomorrow when he turned 17. He would gain a heightened sense of smell, which he would use to figure out who his mate was. This was the main reason his father was talking to him now, instead of waiting until his birthday. His birthday being on June 5th he would have a couple months to finish the transformation and become used to his heightened sense of smell, as well as starting to search for his mate so he wasn’t as overwhelmed when he returned to Hogwarts on the first of September.

But who would his mate be? According to the written Veela records, it could be anyone under the age of 21, but Lucius was convinced that it would be someone Draco already knew, probably from his time at Hogwarts. His Veela nature would generally gravitate towards another creature similar to a Veela to make the transformation his mate would need to make easier, but Draco was sure he didn’t know anyone who wasn’t 100% human. Baring this stipulation, his mate could literally be anyone, regardless of blood status, wealth, intelligence, sexual compatibility, or compatibility to the person in general. His mate didn’t even have to be a girl! What if he ended up with Potter, or even worse... Weasley?

His thoughts all centered on finding out who his mate was as he trudged up the stairs to his bedroom to spend his last night as a human. Even though he would only get one of the skill enhancements this year, he felt like his life was over. His father had told him that the increased hearing was really a blessing, but Draco didn’t believe him. How can anything that makes him less than a pureblood be a blessing?

His thoughts were so preoccupied by these things that he missed the clock striking midnight, signaling the day of his birth. He quickly realized the time, however, when his head suddenly felt like it was going to burst and his body temperature shot up, the pain so unbearable that all he could do was scream, causing his mother and father to rush into the room.

“Lucius, isn’t there anything we can do for him?” Narcissa asked her husband, concerned for her only son’s well being.

“Nothing, Cissa. We have to wait out the week and then he’ll be fine. This is nothing compared to the change at age 18, as I’m sure you remember.” Lucius shuddered thinking of his own transformation. The total body change caused a person’s very DNA to be rewritten in a matter of a week, causing immense pain.

“Of course I do. I remember my own as well. I just wish Draco didn’t have to go through all this!” Narcissa wailed, thinking of the pain of her own transformation. After the Veela completed his own transformation at 18, he or she bites his mate, causing the mate to undergo similar a transformation based on their species to make them compatible for childbearing.

“He’ll be fine, Cissa. Go, sit with him, see if he reveals the identity of his mate sometime throughout his change. I’ll summon Severus to see if there is anything we can do for him in the meantime, alright?” Lucius put a comforting hand on his wife’s shoulder, giving her a swift kiss on the lips before gently nudging her towards Draco’s bed.

“Alright, dear. Hurry back, please!” Narcissa walked over to Draco’s bed, summoning a chair to sit in so she could hold Draco’s hand. Lucius walked out of the room and straight into his office to summon Severus Snape, Draco’s godfather and the only non-Veela to know of the Malfoy’s true heritage.

A/N: OK guys, here’s the start of another story for you all... I received some pretty negative feedback for Best Enemies, so although I will be continuing writing that one, I hope to get some better feedback for this one... I know it’s starting off as pretty stereotypical, but I hope to go in a direction that not many others go by combining some of the stereotypical Veela traits with those of other mythical creatures. Let me know what you think, and I could also use a beta for both stories I’m writing!
