Nicole had grown up in the wizarding world. She knew all about magic, had even performed it tons of times. Her father was the potions teacher at the magic school she would attend soon. She knew all kinds of potions and knew that her father was a spy before when the Dark Lord was in power. She didn’t mind, he loved her and provided for her, she knew that he was a good man, even if he came across as a bastard to everyone around him. Only one other person knew of her existence. For some reason, her father didn’t want anyone to know about her. She didn’t really understand her father’s reasons, but she didn’t question them either. He would never hurt her.
For a year now, all she heard him talk about was a boy named Harry Potter. She didn’t know why, but her father hated this boy, although she could feel that his emotions were conflicted when it came to the boy. He wanted to hate him, but couldn’t fully do it. You see, Nicole is not your ordinary witch. She uses a wand, of course, but she is a rare commodity in her other abilities. While she can cast spells and brew potions, she is an empath. She can feel everyone else’s emotions. She can tell what everyone else is feeling around her. This caused her to shy away from big crowds. All those feelings in one place was overwhelming and she was learning to control her powers. She also had the ability to see the future, sometimes. It wasn’t a constant thing and she had to be touching an object to get a vision. This power she had learned to control at a very early age, using it only to find someone who was lost or an object that her father had misplaced. Now that she was turning 11, she would be going to school and really needed to focus on controlling her empath powers. There were hundreds of students in school and she needed to be able to concentrate on her studies. Her father had already told her that she didn’t have to go, but she couldn’t stand being cooped up in that house another day. She promised him that she could get her empath powers under control and she would do just that.
Her letter had come from Hogwarts and she was excited to be going. She would get to spend more time with her father on a daily basis and make friends with other students. Hopefully, anyway. She wasn’t used to being around other people, so she wasn’t sure how she was going to make friends. She’d just have to wait and see what happened when she got there. Reluctantly, her father had taken her shopping for her school supplies. He was still going on about how she didn’t have to go, she could study at home. She felt that he feared something at the school, or maybe that she would meet someone. That day shopping in Diagon Alley was a good test for her controlling her powers. She did successfully suppress the feelings that she felt around her and was able to concentrate on what her father was telling her.
“Father, when we are at school, do I call you father, or Professor Snape?” she asked quietly while in the bookstore.
“At school, you will address me as Professor Snape whenever others are around. When we are in private, you may still call me father,” he answered absently. “I do not wish for anyone to know that I have a daughter.”
“Are you ashamed of me, father?” she asked timidly.
He turned to her abruptly and stalked over to stand in front of her, “Don’t ever think that, Nicole. I would never be ashamed of you. You just don’t understand what could happen if people at the school knew. You have no idea how much I want to shield you from the dangers of this world. You look so much like your mother and I want to protect you, but I know that I can’t keep you locked away forever.” Turning back to the bookshop owner, he paid for the school books and they left to get her wand. Once they had everything from her list, they apparated back home.
Nicole ran upstairs and began packing her trunk. She already knew most of the stuff in those books, and she knew her father would again try to talk her out of going. He appeared in her doorway, “Are you sure that you want to do this, Nicole? You know that you don’t have control of your powers yet and it would only be torture for you to be in such a close proximity to all those other people.” He looked at her with a pained expression. She felt his emotions and felt that he was nervous and frightened that she would find out something.
“Father, I really do want to do this. Today, in Diagon Alley, I controlled my power and was able to push everyone’s emotions aside to concentrate on what I was doing. I can pull them forward at any time, if I need to. I really have gotten control of this. I need to be around other kids my age, father. I’m going crazy here with only a house-elf to keep me company while you are working. Why is it that you don’t want me to go?” she explained to him.
He sighed, “It’s not that I don’t want you to go, it’s just that I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want someone to take you away from me.”
Nicole walked to her father and wrapped her arms around him, “No one is going to take me away from you. You’re my father and nothing can change that.” She suddenly stiffened and a vision invaded her mind. She saw a flash of green light, and then saw her father bending over her, lifting her covered in blood, wrapping her in a blanket and carrying her away from the ruins of a house. Gasping, she sat down roughly on the bed as the vision vanished.
“What is it, Nicole? Did you have a vision?” Snape asked her, kneeling in front of her.
She nodded, “Only this was different. This was of the past. A flash of green light, you bending over me, lifting me off the ground. I was a baby, covered in blood and you wrapped me in a green blanket and brought me home. What does all that mean? Was that how my mother died?”
Severus hung his head, he knew this day would come and had hoped it would be a long time from now. He looked up at her, tears in his eyes. “I had hoped that this day would never come, but I was hoping against hope. Come child, scoot over and let me sit beside you.” When she had complied, he sat beside her and drew her to his side with one arm. “11 years ago, a very evil man was trying to gain power; he called himself Voldemort, the Dark Lord. He almost gained that power, but met his match in a little one year old boy. When he tried to kill the child, the curse rebounded and hit him instead, causing him to become a mere wisp of himself. He had killed the child’s parents trying to get to him. I had found the rubble of a house and the occupants. When I was holding my dear friend, Lily, her belly began to glow. It was you, showing yourself to be alive inside of her. I magically removed you and carried you home. I knew that someone was on their way to get the boy and that he would be taken care of. I just couldn’t bring myself to let them have you, you were the last part of Lily that I could have and I was going to protect you with my entire being. I didn’t want the Dark Lord to know that you existed, so I had to keep you from everyone. Only one other person knows who you are and that would be the headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore. He only found out about you when your name showed up on his roster for the new term,” he finished his explanation and looked over at her, hoping that she didn’t hate him.
Placing her hand on his cheek, “I could never hate you, father. You are my father, even if you aren’t my blood. Are you saying that I have a brother and that brother is Harry Potter?” she assured him.
He nodded, “No one knows, though, not even Potter. I gave you your mother’s last name because I wanted you to have some connection with her. You can’t let anyone know, this, Nicole, my sweet girl. No one must know that you are Potter’s sister,” he pleaded with her.
“Of course, father. I won’t tell a soul about this. I’m glad that you told me, though. I always wondered why my mother wasn’t around. You loved her very much, didn’t you?” she assured him again.
“Yes, I did. She was the most beautiful woman I knew, until you grew up. You look like her, her eyes, her hair – flaming red like a fire. The more you grow, the more you look exactly like her. We may have a time keeping this from Potter. He has seen her in his mind, and in the mirror a few months ago, plus he’s told all the time how he has his mother’s eyes. He does have more of your father’s traits than you do, though. Promise me that you will stay far away from him. Promise me that you won’t let him drag you into his ‘adventures’,” he begged.
“I promise, father. I’ll stay away from him,” she vowed. He breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that she would keep her promise.
“Now, the old fool, excuse me, the headmaster has made it mandatory that you ride the train to school this first year. I would rather you not, but my hands are tied in this matter. He said that after this year you can travel to school with me. I will take you to the station early in the morning; before anyone gets there and then I will travel to the school and await you there. If I seem different, don’t let it concern you, it’s just an act for everyone else. In the privacy of my chambers, I will remove the act for you, if you ever need me for anything. Speaking of which, in case you do have need of me, just drop a book in the Great Hall or my classroom. I will give you a detention for causing a disturbance and you will report to my chambers at the appointed time. It won’t really be a detention, but it will be the only way for us to talk without anyone else knowing our relationship,” he explained to her.
“Of course, father. I can’t wait to see you in the classroom. I’ve been wondering what you are like away from home.” Nicole smiled at her father. Even if he wasn’t her blood father, he had raised her from birth and shown her love.
He smirked, “You will be surprised.” Rising, he crossed to the door, “Good night, Nicole. I’ll see you in the morning for breakfast.” Nicole watched the door after he left, knowing that it took a lot for him to tell her this information tonight. Pondering all that she had learned, she finished packing her trunk and set it by the door. Dressing for bed, she climb between the sheets and stared at the ceiling, thinking about her life and what her brother would be like. She had always wanted siblings, but now she was afraid. She had promised her father that she wouldn’t seek out Harry, and she was going to keep that promise. After hours of thoughts going through her head, her eyes finally drifted closed and she slept without dreaming.
