A/N: Hello everyone. I’m trying out this plot idea for any of you that enjoy breaking away from the whole we-need-to-defeat-Voldemort storyline. In this fiction, Voldemort died in the last war when he tried to kill Harry as an infant. And he will stay dead. All our favorite characters are attending Hogwarts, as they did in the books, but life has been fairly normal as there is no Voldemort is returning threat.
I’m also manipulating the ages of certain characters. While this is taking place during Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s sixth year at Hogwarts, some of the characters in other houses that would normally have graduated Hogwarts by that time in J.K.’s books, are still attending as Seventh year students in my fiction.
I also want to warn that this fiction may get somewhat dark in later chapters. I do strive to keep the well known characters acting as they might be known to, but I do want to warn you that some we know and love, especially in regards to Hermione, may go through some changes. I will try to keep the transitions as believable as possible considering the circumstances and not have them acting completely different out of the blue for no reason.
Enough background for now. I hope you enjoy the beginning of this new fiction.

Chapter One
“Mr. Flint, he is not allowed to have visitors as of yet. Please return to your classes,” Madam Pomfrey stood, blocking the entrance to the hospital wing.
Marcus craned his head to the side, noticing over her shoulder that his best friend did indeed have visitors. He lifted his eyebrows in question, giving the healer a knowing look.
“Those are his parents,” she emphasized, letting him know that only family would be allowed to visit Adrian at this time.
Adrian Pucey, Marcus’ best friend since childhood and fellow Slytherin had literally collapsed in Arithmancy class that morning. It was completely without warning when Adrian simply fell out of his seat, unconscious on the floor.
Marcus sighed in defeat. “How serious is it?” If Adrian’s parents had to be called over, it did not bode well.
“I cannot discuss the details with you.”
Marcus turned to find the Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, hurrying toward them. “Madam Pomfrey,” Albus greeted.
“Headmaster,” she greeted in return, letting him slip past her into the hospital room. She shifted her attention once more to Marcus. “Good day, Mr. Flint,” she said, formally, before closing the door.
Marcus banged a frustrated fist on the doorframe before turning away, mumbling about ‘stupid witches’.
OOOOO
Adrian lay in the hospital bed, a bit dazed, wondering how fast his parents had arrived. How long had he been out? Last thing he remembered before the incident was being in class, taking notes as usual. Then, suddenly, his mind had seemed to click off and then on again. And when it clicked on, he was somehow in a very realistic dream of some sort, except he was just an observer and not part of what was happening.
He heard a man’s deep voice saying, “Remember.” And then the scene became sharp, focused. There was an entrance, a gateway, with the word ‘Numengard’ etched in heavy letters in the arch over the wrought iron doors. He could see the path behind the gate, leading to a very large stone building. It had turrets and towers and Adrian had the feeling it was more of a fortress than a castle.
Adrian felt as if he were standing just outside the gate, looking in, when a group of five wizards in cloaks passed close by him, not acknowledging his presence in the least. “Hello,” Adrian voiced, but was ignored. He realized that to them, he was not present. “Interesting,” he said, pursing his lips, glancing about this world he was quite invisible in.
The gates opened on their own as the five wizards strode purposely in, heading toward the large iron doors of the fortress. Adrian curiously walked behind them, taking note of the inner courtyard, filled with weapons and training dummies, duel rings and forges. It was a strange mix of magical and muggle implements.
He hurried along when he noticed the wizards were already at the door, pulling the rope to some sort of bell. Stopping behind the group, he waited to see who would answer the door. Never had he had such a clear and detailed vision as this. It felt as if he was really here, though he knew he couldn’t be. Even if he had accidentally apparated somehow, he surely would have felt it. One did not simply apparate without the accompanying crackle, the feeling of being turned and pulled inside out, and the disorientation as your body settled again. No, this was something different.
The huge metal doors groaned as they were pulled inwards, revealing another group of wizards. The ones now facing him looked very unhappy at the group of visitors, hostile even. Yet they made no move to attack.
“We have come to fulfill the agreement,” a hooded figure in front spoke.
Then another appeared in the door, more arrogant and regal than the rest. Adrian assumed he must be the head of this establishment, whatever it may be. He looked dangerously at the one who had just spoken. “I will remind you, this arrangement is temporary. When the alignment occurs, they will be returned to me.”
The hooded figure nodded, “Of course, Cassius, I understand. They will be in good hands, I assure you. No harm will come to them.”
“See to it, or face a wrath far greater than the war you have just endured.”
“I understand.”
The leader, Cassius, turned his face and nodded to someone. Next, four witches came into view, each holding a baby. The women had been crying, apparently, faces red with grief and eyes swollen. They huddled together before the door, kissing the infants and hugging them to their chests one last time. Then they handed them over, one infant to each wizard outside the door, fresh tears falling down their cheeks as they reluctantly let go.
Adrian had no idea why they were giving babies to these wizards. Some sort of agreement? Who would agree to hand over their children? And for what purpose? More importantly, why was he here to witness it?
Then his mind seemed to click off again, and then on. This time he found himself standing on a platform somewhere over a body of water. A lake? An ocean? He couldn’t tell. On the center of the platform was an alter of some sort. Adrian stepped closer trying to focus on all the ruins carved into the alter. He recognized some of them from his ancient runes class, but he didn’t have time to think much about it as he felt he was not alone. Turning about he noticed a wizard was standing behind him, looking right at him in fact. This time Adrian was surprised that he could actually be seen in this strange vision/dream. Adrian blinked a few times as the man stared back at him, a serious expression on his face. It began to dawn on him that this was the same man from the previous vision, the seeming leader of the fortress, except an older version. The one who was called Cassius.
“Remember, son, remember who you are. Find your two brothers and your sister. Reunite your family. It is time,” Cassius spoke.
Adrian shook his head in confusion, “I don’t understand.”
“You will.”
And then everything went black, and Adrian found himself waking in a bed in the hospital wing. He squinted in confusion at the blurry shapes that soon came into focus. His parents sat by his bedside, looking relieved that he was waking. At least, he thought these were his parents, weren’t they? He had always known them as such.
“Adrian?” his mother said, anxiously. “Oh, darling, thank goodness you’re waking up.” She placed her hand over his and squeezed. “We were so worried.”
“I…” Adrian tried to speak, but his head was still a bit fuzzy.
“Don’t strain yourself,” his dad said. “Just relax.”
“What happened? Why are you here?” he managed to whisper.
“You gave everyone a fright, just falling over like that,” his mother explained. “Madam Pomfrey contacted us right away and we flooed here immediately.”
Adrian shut his eyes and sighed. “You shouldn’t have worried so. I’m sorry you were bothered. How long was I out for?”
“Almost an hour and a half,” his dad replied. “And it’s no bother. We just want to know why such a thing would happen. Madam Pomfrey doesn’t feel it was a jinx or curse. There was no magical signature to your symptoms.”
“Have you been eating properly, darling?” His mother asked. “You must make sure you do not go to class on an empty stomach.”
“Mother, I haven’t been skipping meals. Stop worrying,” he assured her. He knew they needed an explanation of some sort. But how was he going to tell them about his vision? He glanced at his father. How as he going to tell them about this Cassius fellow calling him ‘son’? He decided he wouldn’t tell them. Not now. Not until he had time to sort it all out himself.
It was then that Dumbledore arrived, bringing Madam Pomfrey behind him.
“Ah, good, you are conscious,” the headmaster smiled.
Madam Pomfrey scurried around to the other side of the bed, waving a medi-wand over him to read his vitals. “How are you feeling, Mr. Pucey?”
“A bit tired, truthfully,” he answered.
“What do you believe brought this on?” Dumbledore inquired. “Has anything happened lately that would affect your health in this manner? Have you consumed any potions? Tried any new spells…?”
Adrian shook his head. “No, sir, I can’t think of anything. Maybe I have been staying up too late to study and simply needed to sleep.”
Madam Pomfrey snorted doubtfully. “One does not usually fall asleep in such a manner, even when extremely fatigued. You lost consciousness and tipped right over.”
Adrian shrugged. “Perhaps I’m the exception.”
“Regardless,” Dumbledore said, “I think you should stay the rest of the day and rest. Madam Pomfrey can finish her exam and try to rule out any other possible reason. And, Mr. Pucey, I realized you strive for top marks in everything you do, but I insist you not put that above your health. Time management includes making time to take care of yourself.”
“Yes, sir,” Adrian replied. “I understand.”
OOOOOO
A week had passed since the incident, and Adrian was still out of sorts. The voice of Cassius continued to speak in his mind at various times during the days. Adrian tried to appear his normal self in front of all at Hogwarts, but inside something seemed to be unfolding. He would be sitting in class, at meals or walking down the corridors, when the man’s voice spouted sentences in his mind. Nothing Cassius said seemed to indicate that he had any idea what Adrian was doing at that particular moment. It was as if the man was making a quick fire call to a hearth somewhere in Adrian’s brain, just to spout things like:
“You will know them by their magic. Soften your gaze. You will see.”
“Bind yourself to your siblings. There is strength in numbers.”
“I will come to you when the alignment is over.”
And the most disturbing thing of all:
“You are a Grindelwald. Do not forget your heritage.”
It is when Adrian heard that last statement that he accidentally snapped his quill in half out of shock.
Grindelwald?
He had heard that name before. It belonged to a famous wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, who was defeated by Dumbledore in the greatest duel ever fought, or so the history books said.
Was Cassius also a Grindelwald? Just how many Grindelwalds were there? Adrian practically sprinted to the library after class, ignoring his girlfriend, Daphne Greengrass, when she called out to him. He had to know if there was a Cassius Grindelwald. And if this man did exist, why was he calling out to Adrian like this?
He went up to the front desk, slightly out of breath.
“Mr. Pucey, may I help you?” Madam Pince inquired.
“I do hope so,” he replied with a smile. Adrian had never been short on charm and his affect on females when he smiled had almost always resulted in getting exactly what he wanted. “I’d like to see anything you may have on the Grindelwald family.”
“Grindelwald? You must be doing a report on our very own headmaster’s great victory. Very good choice of subject and quite interesting,” she smiled back. She waved her wand over a blank parchment until words began to form -book titles and their locations in the library. When she was done, she handed him the parchment.
Adrian smiled flirtatiously again. “Madam, you are a jewel.”
Madam Pince blushed and cleared her throat, turning away as she said, nervously, “Good day, Mr. Pucey.”
Adrian made his way down the stacks, perusing the list in his hands as he went. He finally found an isle worth exploring and turned, coming up short when he almost bumped into a witch.
“Pardon…” he began before noticing it was none other than the mud blood, Hermione Granger. She glanced at him and turned her back on him, not bothering to move out of the way.
He sneered at the back of her head just before he noticed her fingers were pulling a book off the shelf, Gellert Grindelwald, A Biography - the very one he was looking for. She glanced over her shoulder, wondering why he was still lingering behind her. “What is your problem?” she asked, her nose crinkled in dislike.
Really? She was talking down to him?
“Right now, Granger, you seem to be the problem.”
She whirled around quickly, her wand in her hand, shocking Adrian as she jabbed under his chin and kept the tip pushed onto his skin. “I suggest you take your slimy Slytherin self back to the snake pit that you came from and forget harassing muggleborns today,” she growled, forcing his chin higher with her wand.
He grabbed her wand with one hand, forcing it sideways and off of his face as he snarled, “I was not trying to harass you. I was simply looking for the very book you have in your hands.”
She pulled her wand away, tucking it back into her robes as she muttered, “Oh, I see,” with embarrassment. She took a step back, hugging the volume to her chest. “I need this book too. You’ll just have to wait until I finish.”
“Can’t you find another?” he asked, impatiently.
“Can’t you?” she replied, saucily.
He huffed out a breath of frustration, before turning away from her to consult his list of other possible sources.
She moved past him, surprising him when she stopped and turned to face him. He glanced up from his parchment, amused that she seemed to be struggling with what she wanted to say.
“Are you… is it… do you need it for research for homework?”
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t. I just thought…” she sighed. “Forget it.” She turned about and strode away.
OOOOO
After spending a good three hours in the library with all the volumes he could find on Grindelwald, Adrian looked up to find Daphne sitting across from him at the table, her arms crossed and a frown on her face.
“You finally notice that I’m here,” she grumped.
He smiled ruefully, closing the book he had been engrossed in. “I apologize. Was there something you needed to say?”
“Adrian!” she snapped. “You completely ignored me today. I know you heard me call your name earlier, but you just walked off. Then, you don’t show for supper. I thought, perhaps, you were snogging someone new.” Her faced filled with hurt.
He got up and came around the table, pulling a chair closer to hers and sat next to her. Putting an arm about her shoulders and leaning in, he said, “I’m sorry, Daph. I’ve been a bit distracted lately, and it has not been with another girl. You’re the only one I want to snog, among other things,” he whispered, his lips brushing her earlobe and making her shiver.
She grinned, mollified. “What has you distracted, then?”
“Research.”
“Research? On what?”
“It’s not important,” he replied, not wanting to explain the voices in his head. “I’m quite through with it for the day. In fact,” he smiled sexily, “I’m aching to research something far more interesting.”
“Oh? And what is that?” she blushed, prettily.
He moved his mouth to her neck, his breath hot. “Your body,” he said, his voice silky and sure.
Daphne took a deep breath, a small tremor passing up her torso. Adrian had been her lover for the past three months and she knew the delights in store for her. Outwardly, Adrian gave the impression that he was a bit on the shy side when it came to the opposite sex, but Daphne knew better. Once you got past his aloof façade, he was anything but shy.
OOOOO
“Oi, Mione,” Ron called out across the Gryffindor common room. He balled up a sheet of parchment and tossed it at her.
“Grow up, Ronald,” she said, not looking up from her book when the parchment hit her arm.
“Can’t you shut that book for one minute?” he continued. “We need you to help us with these ruin translations.”
“You mean you need me to do them for you,” she mumbled, still not looking up.
“What was that?” he called out.
She sighed and slammed the book shut. She stood up, her book clutched to her chest and walked to where Ron and Harry were sitting. They had been lounging in their chairs with no sign that they had been doing any concentrating on their homework. All she had heard all evening was their voices conversing about everything except schoolwork.
“I think you two need to at least attempt to do the translations on your own. How else are you going to learn? If you like, I can look them over in the morning and let you know how you did.”
“What?” Ron said, surprised. “We don’t understand these at all.”
“Because you aren’t even trying.”
“But…”
Harry interrupted the argument. “She’s right, Ron.”
“Harry!” Ron exclaimed. “Who’s side are you on?”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Honestly, Ronald.”
“I’m not taking sides,” Harry said. “But I do think we’ve been wasting a lot of time waiting for Hermione to help us. Let’s just try it on our own tonight.”
Ron shrugged, looking defeated. “Whatever,” he frowned. “Thanks for nothing.”
Harry looked at Hermione in apology and shook his head. She smiled ruefully at him before turning and heading up to her dorm room.
She was happy to find her dorm mates were still out as she curled up on her pillows, opening the biography of Gellert Grindelwald to where she had stopped before. Happily she was three days ahead on her homework, so she could afford to spend the whole evening doing as she pleased.
She had the strangest dream last night. It had felt so real, like she was actually there, standing on a small island in the middle of lake. There was a man there, reading the ruins on a stone altar. He looked up at her as she approached and said, “This is our family history.”
And Hermione asked, “Who are you?”
“Cassius Grindelwald. Remember me.”
And when she woke this morning, she did remember her dream. She had told Harry and Ron during breakfast, but they didn’t have much to say in return. Despite their lack of interest, Hermione couldn’t stop thinking about the man, this Cassius Grindelwald. What if she was sent this dream? What if it had some sort of significance?
She went directly into research mode after classes were through. Grindelwald was certainly a famous name, and she wondered if Cassius was at all related to the infamous Gellert Grindelwald, Dumbledore’s old foe.
One other thing occupied her thoughts tonight, and that was her run in with Adrian Pucey in the library. He, too, had been searching for information on Gellert Grindelwald strangely. But that was not the most disturbing thing. What had struck her as odd was his eyes. His eyes were exactly the same as in her dream, exactly the same as Cassius Grindelwald.
OOOOO
A/N There’s the start of this. I don’t know if it is sparking anyone’s interest, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head lately. I wanted to get away from the whole Voldemort threat, and create a whole different power struggle going on. Please let me know if you are interested in me continuing on with this story. Thank you for reading.
