Kyrie stood up from a chair occupying an isolated corner of the Slytherin common room. She tousled her short dirty blonde with bright pink tips into a sloppy look American punk rockers wore and fixed her school uniform. She had only just begun her journey at Hogwarts as a fourth year from Salem Witches’ Institute, however it was apparent most people in her house hated her. She thought maybe it was her abrasive attitude or general intrusiveness of a new student. However after the announcement of the Triwizard Tournament, Draco Malfoy put it into perspective.
“Well, well,” he started with his signature smirk as he tossed his platinum hair. “If it isn’t Kyrie Langdon, the first mudblood to be sorted into Slytherin. Tell me, are you intimidated by all the purebloods in this room?”Kyrie retorted quickly in a Bostonian accent, snorting in an unladylike fashion, “That would mean I’m scared, Malfoy, but I don’t see any reason to fear anyone as incompetent as you or your poor excuse of an entourage.” She gathered up a red backpack with “The Ramones” on the front and began walking out of the common room to go to lunch. “If you want, I could teach you how to be a real wizard.” Kyrie smirked. She knew that would illicit a response, because from what she could tell, Draco was much like her, arrogant and egotistic.“The person who needs to learn how to be a real wizard is you.” Draco poured animosity and venom on his response. He grabbed Kyrie’s wrist and spun her around. “Look at me when I speak to you, Mudblood.”“Why? Why would I purposely look at someone who I can’t fucking stand?” Kyrie smiled sarcastically and wrench her arm out of Draco’s hand. She walked away without another words.Once Kyrie was in the hall, a hand jutted out and grabbed her shoulder. “I’m not done with this conversation.” It was obviously Draco who grabbed her. “Do you think you can walk away from me?”“Is that a rhetorical question, or are you not aware of the concept of free will?” Kyrie rolled her eyes and looked into Draco’s eyes with her golden eyes. She noticed she stood at about his collar bone.“Damn it. You’re insufferable.”“And you’re an asshole who hides behind his father.”Now Draco was about to scream. “You don’t talk about my family, Mudblood.”“Then stop calling me Mudblood.”“And if I don’t?”“I’ll make sure to see it personally that you are hexed so hard that Madam Pomfrey can’t heal your wounds.”Draco began seething more that originally as he drew his wand, however before he hexed Kyrie, he stopped himself. “I can’t hex a girl.” He began to walk towards to the Great Hall. “Are you coming?”“With you?”“Yes. Maybe you could be civil, Langdon.”“We just fought in the common room, pissed all over each other’s territory, and you want to be civil?” Kyrie logically thought through being civil with Draco Malfoy. He’s pretentious and thick-headed, but if we’re civil maybe that will get the rest of the house to like me. “Fine, Malfoy, I’ll accompany you to the Great Hall.” She quickly caught up to Draco.“Good, Langdon, and I expect you’ll be sitting with the first years like at breakfast? If not, you’re welcome to sit with us.” Draco smiled earnestly disarming Kyrie.“Yeah, I’ll sit with you all.” Kyrie looked curiously at Draco with a little bit of apprehension and excitement of finally having civil conversation with kids her own age. “Why do you want me to sit with you?”“I’m curious about makes you different than all the other muggle-borns.”“Okay.” Kyrie didn’t talk the rest of the walk to the Great Hall until a dark skinned Italian caught up to them. She thought he looked friendly and polite, but then she noticed the Slytherin crest on his robes. He’s probably an asshole like Draco.“Drake,” Blaise’s voice came out like smooth velvet, “is she sitting with us?” Blaise smiled beautifully at Kyrie as he added. “I’m excited to learn of American schooling.”“Yes I am sitting with you guys.” Kyrie quickly answered before Draco had the chance. “I am also excited to learn about England and Italy if you would allow.” She smiled heartily at Blaise.“Cara, I would love to teach you of Italia.” Blaise took Kyrie’s hand and guided her to a middle section of the Slytherin table near Gregory, Daphne, and Pansy. “Sit beside me.”Gregory was the first to comment on Kyrie’s appearance at the table. “What is the Mudblood doing away from her first years?”Then Pansy joined. “She shouldn’t even be a Slytherin.”Gregory snickered. “Maybe she’d be more suited for Hufflepuff.” Then proceeded to slap Draco on the back as he arrived at the table. “Right, pal?”Yeah." Draco coldly looked off into the distance. This action elicited looks from his fellow Slytherin.Daphne finally spoke. “She’d do well as a Hufflepuff. They’re all dumb and loose just like her.” Then she proceeded to dump a cup full of pumpkin juice into Kyrie’s lap. After this final incident, Kyrie stood up and left, rushing out of the Great Hall only to hear the laughs of most of the Slytherins and a few from the Gryffindors. She couldn’t return to the common room in sheer embarrassment and fear. She roamed the halls to cool her head before stumbling across the Room of Requirement. By pure curiosity did she open that door, and she was thankful she didn’t skip it, thinking it was a classroom.Inside was a lake with a boulder protruding from the edge during night and atop the boulder was a blanket and boombox. It reminded Kyrie of the lake near her family home. Merlin did she miss home. She missed everyone aside from her mother, who hated her. Carefully Kyrie climbed atop the rock and cuddled up in the blanket. She pressed play on the boombox, and surprised that the songs were lullabies she would listen to as a child. Momentary happiness washed over her, but quickly it faded as she realized she was alone. A mudblood in a pureblood world with not a shoulder to cry on.“Figured I’d find you here, Langdon.” A hand touched her shoulder and pulled her into the person’s chest. “There’s no reason for them to act like that. I’m sorry.”“Apology accepted, Malfoy.” A tear slid past her eyes. She quickly wiped it away.“You can cry, and call me Draco. Friends shouldn’t be calling each other by their last name.”“Friends?” Kyrie choked out as a few more tears broke her barrier.“Yes, friends. You look like you need one.”“But won’t I taint you or something?”“I’d probably be a better person if I was a little tainted.”“Mal… Draco?”“Huh?”“Thank you.”Draco smiled and pulled Kyrie closer. “Tell me something.”“Yes?”“Why a lake at night?”“It reminds me of home.” Kyrie snuggled up against Draco. “I would run away to a lake about a mile from my house. I would come at night so I could stay longer.”“I see. We should get headed to the common room.”Kyrie looked up at Draco with panic plastered across her face. “No. I don’t want to go.”Draco carefully grabbed her chin with his thumb and forefinger. “Why can you stand up to me, but not to the rest of them?”“You’re only one person.”“I see. Don’t worry. Blaise and I threatened them.”“Really?”“Of course.”Kyrie stood up and straightened herself up. Cautiously she climbed down the rock and towards the door. “Are you going to be my escort?”Draco smiled. “I don’t know; you might taint me.” He then grabbed her hand proceeded to walk her to the common room. “It is a pleasure to escort a beautiful young lady to her room.” Draco said as they arrived the portrait hole.“Thank you again.”As Kyrie stepped through the hole, she immediately heard Blaise yelling. “She could hurt herself. Could you all live with yourselves if something happened to her?”Kyrie heard Pansy protest. “Zabini, she’s only a…”“No. She’s more than a muggle-born. She’s a human being with feelings. Her blood runs just as red as yours.”“Blaise, I’m fine.” Kyrie called out.“Cara, where were you?”“The Room of Requirement.”“Go to the boys’ dorm room and wait for me and Drake. I want to talk to you.”Kyrie obeyed, walking to the boys’ dorms. When she came in only Draco was in the room. “Blaise wants to talk to you.”“I know.”Draco stood and hugged Kyrie. A tear streamed down his face. “We think it will be better if you weren’t in Slytherin.”“No! I want to be in Slytherin. Obviously I’m here for a reason.”“Kyrie, this isn’t a debate. Dumbledore saw what happened a suggested it.”“I want to be here.”“I won’t argue then, but consider it.”“It’s been considered. I’m staying here.”
Kyrie would remain the mud in a clear pool for the rest of her days no matter how much Draco and Blaise protested, causing trouble for the pureblood supremacists. She would always endure hardships as a mudblood in a pureblood world.
