Summary: People thought Harry ran off to find Sirius when he vanished after his 3rd year. They were wrong. At 19, he returns with the two that he left with, very different. And it sets plenty on its ear.

Prologue
“Something isn't right, Remus. I can feel it,” Sirius told his old friend as he gazed out the window of Remus' small cottage after the escape from Hogwarts. It felt amazing that he was free and could do this, of course, something he had dreamed of for so long, but the worry was weighing on his mind.
“Such as?” Remus asked, hoping that if Sirius laid whatever it was out, it would either lay his fears to rest as he could see it more clearly as he did or they could figure out what it was. At the moment, he didn't know what Sirius was referring to, but assumed it had something to do with the mess they just got out of. Unpacking, sending everything to its proper place, he waited to see what his old friend had to say.“The bit with Harry,” Sirius told him, turning around and leaning against the wall, arms folded over his chest. He was feeling better and less stressed, so he could think more clearly. For the first time since going to prison for a crime he didn't commit, he had enjoyed a long, hot shower and had clean clothes on. They weren't his, of course, but it still felt amazing.Sending the last of his possessions where they belonged, Remus took a seat and looked at his old friend. “What about that? I think it's pretty amazing what they did, Sirius.”“I think there is more going on than we are seeing,” Sirius told him, shaking his head. “Albus sent two third years to take on a job that an adult should have handled. Not only that, but they were in more danger than anyone should put someone that age in. I get that Hermione is smart and Harry is above average in defending himself, but would you have sent him to take on all those Dementors, Remus? He couldn't cast that charm before he did. You, yourself, said that. All of what happened last night should have had an adult handling it. You can't tell me Albus couldn't step in to do something about it. Or sent someone else, like Minerva. Both of them could have taken on the situation far better than Harry and Hermione. We won't get into the danger of being in that forest after you transformed. I'm sure that you were close to where they were hiding.”Looking at Sirius, brow furrowed, Remus thought it over. Yes, it sounded logical, he would admit that, but there was sure to be more to whatever was behind it. “Albus had his reasons, Sirius. We might not know what they are, but you know him.”“I know an old man sent two kids to take on Dementors, a werewolf and who knows what else,” Sirius shot right back. Sighing, he shook his head. “For the sake of argument, say I'm wrong and he did have a purpose for doing it. That he knew what he was doing despite the danger. I picked up gossip while hanging around, Remus. There was that stone and what Harry did. The same with Ron and Hermione. That was deadly. Quirrell had You-Know-Who himself sticking out the back of his head. Anything dealing with that maniac ends up deadly. Yet three first years got through a maze that was supposedly as tough as the teachers in that school could make it. No chance, Remus. Even in school our first year, we wouldn't have managed to get through something the best of the best made up. That tells me something is off. I don't know exactly what happened there, but it rings of something smelly. That stone had no business being in that school. And you can't tell me that all of this is just a coincidence, what with Harry just starting that year,” Sirius told him, laying it out the best he could.“No one thinks him coming back is happenstance, Sirius. We all think it has something to do with Harry,” Remus admitted, crossing his legs.“Then tell me why it is that Albus didn't do a better job to protect Harry from that and not have that stone in the school. There are plenty of other places he could have stashed it that were safe, Remus,” Sirius shot right back.Thinking that over, Remus gave a reluctant nod. Sirius was right, of course, especially with what he knew of the incident now. Albus had to know what was going on with Quirrell, as Severus did and was doing what he could to protect Harry from it.“We won't get into his home life, Remus. It's horrific,” Sirius sighed, slumping and looking at the floor as he thought over all he saw when he was hanging out in Little Whinging to watch Harry after he escaped.“Albus said that the Dursleys aren't the most loving of families, but they do care about Harry deep down,” Remus soothed, figuring all his old friend needed was some reassurances to get over his doubts.“Oh, bullshite,” Sirius shot right back, brow furrowed. “The Dursleys care about as much for him as my family did me, Remus. In fact, they treat him worse. He's like a house elf and takes what could only be termed abuse. It might not be physical, though from what I heard while hanging around as Padfoot that might be involved as well, but its abuse. That whole neighborhood thinks of him as a freak and worthless because of the way his 'not the most loving of families' treat him. They judge him because of the clothes he wears. Dudley, Vernon and Petunia are all dressed nicely in expensive clothes and they force Harry to wear Dudley's hand me downs. Not only are they in bad shape, but they are miles too big for him as Dudley is bigger than you and I put together. We can even toss in another person and we still wouldn't be the same size. They don't care for him, Remus. I don't give a shite what Albus says on the matter.”Looking at Sirius, Remus wasn't sure what to say to that.“You were supposed to take him if I couldn't. Why didn't you?” Sirius asked, decidedly curious though he was sure he knew the answer.Sighing, Remus shook his head then explained, “That night—you know what it was like, Sirius. Albus took Harry before any of us could get there. He was with the Dursleys before I knew what was going on. I tried, but there were the Blood Wards. Harry would have been far safer there than with me. You know that. I had no provisions set up to care for him or handle my condition. You know what it's like for a couple of weeks a month before and after the full moon. Then there was the money situation. I barely make it on my own. There wasn't any way I could take on the burden that comes with a child. I'm sure that Lily and James made some provision, somewhere, for that, but it wouldn't have been enough, Sirius. You had the means, I didn't.”As those were the issues he assumed, Sirius sighed, looking down. “Something is wrong, Remus, very wrong,” he said once more. “If it was on the up and up, Albus wouldn't be lying about so much or allowing Harry to get involved. Which tells me that it's just going to get worse before this ends.” Walking over and flopping in an old, well worn chair opposite his old friend, he added, “If we had pulled some of this, we would have been docked house points that would have had everyone screaming at us. Harry gets rewarded, something that encourages him to do more. He's trying to please everyone and do what he thinks is right because he has nothing at home, and I doubt he ever had any kind of encouragement there, thus getting drawn in. I think that's something that's planned or encouraged for whatever reason.”“I doubt that, Sirius,” Remus told him gently. “Albus has odd ways of tending to matters, we both know that. This is probably one of those. I don't think Harry's home life is as bad as you thought you saw. I'm sure he gets plenty of encouragement, love and affection. Maybe not overt, but it's there.”“It's not,” Sirius told him, voice a low snarl. “I swear it isn't.” Knowing what Remus was like, especially when it came to Albus, he said, “How about this; you observe over there for a week then we talk again. I can stay plenty hidden until then. If it's not, that's proving one of my points. If it proves that point, it's going to lean us towards the others. What do you say?”Thinking it over, Remus saw no downside in just observing. After all, it would shore up his end of this and ease Sirius' mind. He was sure that part of this came from what he went through in Azkaban. “I can do that. As long as you stay safe.” Remus agreed softly.“I can stay here as Padfoot. You have it warded well enough that no one can get in, so they won't think to try. After all, they've already checked here and cleared you,” Sirius told him. “Besides, my Animagus form isn't registered and very few know it.”“We'll go about it that way,” Remus told him with a smile, looking forward to having his old friend and lover stay with him for a while.
Flopped in an old comfortable chair, Sirius watched a pacing, upset Remus make another trek around the room. The week they talked about for observing was up and Remus was highly disturbed by what he saw. Unable to help himself, Sirius said, quietly, “I told you.”
“You did,” Remus admitted, scrubbing both hands through his hair. “That is—it's abusive and unhealthy.”“I know,” Sirius told him with a nod. “The question of now what are we going to do comes in. He can't stay there, Remus. And I can't keep hiding here. I need out. Though I need to get out, I refuse to leave him there any longer. What Albus says—I don't fucking care anymore. Harry belongs with me, not with people that use and abuse him.”Stopping, Remus looked at Sirius then sighed, giving a reluctant nod. “I agree that he needs removed, fast. He may be used to whatever that is as it's probably the only thing he knows, but we can't let it go on. There is time to reverse what was instilled in him, but we have to do it quickly. And as for the how—that I don't know. If he vanishes, they're going to look at me. You can't do this on your own either, especially with you being on the run.”Without thinking, Sirius said, shrugging, “I say that both of us vanish together and take Harry with us. We can manage, between the both of us. It's something that has to happen fast, too. The Weasleys have tickets to the World Cup. You know Harry will end up being invited.”“We need to find a way out of the country if we do this, Sirius. That will take planning and involve moving money. It's not something you can accomplish overnight.” Remus said, fully planning to agree once they got some spanners out of the gears.“We can hide well enough before then,” Sirius told him in a confident tone. “I know several places we can hop around in that will keep us safe for a couple of weeks. It can't forever, of course, but it'll give us time to do what we need once we snag Harry.”“Are you sure?” Remus asked quietly, looking at Sirius.“I am,” Sirius nodded. “We'll have the time we need to get everything in place and work with Harry on explaining so much.”Pondering that hard, Remus then gave a slow nod before saying, “If you're sure.”“I'm sure,” Sirius reassured him. “I've managed this long. We just need your skills at warding, protection and defense to help. Between the two of us, we'll manage to stay safe until we can get out. And I already have something in mind to get us out, don't worry. There is a plan we can easily manage. That and I know where we can go to stay safe. It's just going to mean that while Harry and I hide, you need to stay visible so no one starts tracing you. You can also throw them off the track. Let's face it; if Harry vanishes, they are going to think me and that you might end up involved. We need to keep them off the track and not have you wanted right along with me.”“That I can do,” Remus nodded. “It'll give you the time you need to transfer and set whatever up. While you tend to that, I'll make it clear I'm going to exit the country again to look for work.”“We'll go with this plan as its perfect. With what happened at school, people would buy that from you,” Sirius said, pleased. “Now we just have to figure out a way to get Harry. That's going to end up the worst part of this. Not only is he among Muggles, but Arabella will be watching him more closely now at Albus' insistence.”“Very true,” Remus sighed, starting to pace again as his mind worked on that issue. “We'll find a way. Padfoot—we need to stay cautious on that front.”“You can manage with a disguise,” Sirius told him, looking in his direction, leaning forward, hands clasped, elbows resting on his knees. “All you have to do is give up to Harry something like his Patronus form for him to know it's you. With as fast as he was ready to leave with me, I'm damned sure that we won't have a problem talking him into this.”“I'll manage,” Remus told him, sounding determined. “It's just getting him out. We can't do that during the day, obviously. Which leaves at night. That I'm not sure how to arrange either.”“We'll find a way. That should actually be one of the easier parts of this mess,” Sirius told him, thinking over how they could manage that one. Off the top of his head, he had a couple ways they could go about it without causing problems. “The only thing I see is afterwards. The second Harry vanishes with us, I'm sure those wards will come down and Albus will end up being alerted. Which means we need to have everything in place, fast, so we can get there and then you're still around so he doesn't get suspicious.”“I can manage that,” Remus told him, mind circling all the problems they were going to end up dealing with when it came to what they had to do. “We need this in place, fast, Sirius. As in within days. For some—it'll take time, but we need it started before we get Harry out.”“We can manage. I can start most of it today. Then the two of us can visit where we'll be holing up. Not only do we need to put up protections, but make sure it's livable and we have the necessities. If it was just me, I could scrounge and it wouldn't matter. Harry's involved and I won't force him to do that. He's had to do that enough, from what I know, that it won't continue.”“Yes, we'll take that on today. Between the two of us, we can get it done quickly,” Remus told him, focusing on the issues they had to tend to and planning what he needed to take care of before they could just exit. “We have a limited time, so we need to hurry.”“Not a problem, we'll manage,” Sirius assured him, making a mental list of just what they had to do and how to go about it. If he was right, they would be fine. With the madness of the World Cup coming, the Ministry would be slow to react anyway, giving them a better chance of getting out. Good. They would need all the help they could get in staying safe.
Shifting around with a groan, Harry crossed his legs as he sat down on the grass by the garden. He was weeding, of course, and watering what was there as he went. It wasn't an overly taxing job, so he didn't mind it much. Other than it was hot out today. As he had the hose pipe by him, that made it bearable. Even better was the fact that he was alone. Vernon was at work, of course, as it was the middle of the week. Aunt Petunia and Dudley were off doing something or other, he wasn't sure what, but heard something about getting clothes. That was fine, too. He would rather take care of his chores when no one was around to bug him.
Picking up the hose pipe, he watered the plants he just finished weeding then doused his own head with the cool water. That made him feel even better and cooled him down nicely. Perfect. Shaking his head after putting his glasses back on, he gave a contented sigh as he finger combed his now wet hair. It was then he was startled by the sound of someone clearing their throat.Head whipping in the direction he heard the sound, he immediately grabbed for his wand in his back pocket as there was a stranger standing there, smiling at him. He knew he had been alone not minutes before and would have heard someone come into the backyard. That told him he needed to stay wary.Coming over and crouching down, the disguised Remus told him, keeping a soothing tone and staying quiet, “Nothing to worry about, Harry. You know me.”Eyes narrowed, Harry said, tone hushed, “I don't recognize you.”“I'm concealing my identity,” Remus told him honestly. “I'm the one that taught you your Patronus. The stag was also your father's Patronus as well.” As most didn't know the form of Harry's Patronus, he thought that would put him at ease.Glancing around to make sure that no one was there that would overhear, he then looked back at the person and asked, voice very soft, “Professor Lupin?”Putting a hand on Harry's shoulder and giving it a reassuring squeeze, Remus nodded. “Yes. Just don't use my name again. I put up a temporary ward to keep anyone from overhearing, but we don't want to take any chances.”Nodding and grinning a little, Harry was happy about this. “What are you doing here? Is my godfather alright?” He asked, highly curious about that, hoping there was no danger or that Sirius didn't get caught.“Everything is fine,” Remus soothed. Taking a seat by Harry, with a groan, Remus told him honestly, “We've both seen how your family treats you and don't want this to continue, Harry. So, we want to get you out. You're going to have to hide, of course, and we'll disguise your looks like we will our own.”Heart hammering, Harry grinned then gave a vigorous nod. “When do we leave?” He didn't even think about it, wanting out and to be with Sirius. In the back of his mind, there were doubts, reminders of what he would give up and all manner of other bits, but he ignored them. Out. He wanted out and away from his family.“It won't be easy, I'm warning you. Some of what you're used to you won't be able to do anymore. That and you're going to have to cut off contact with your friends. You'll be with Sirius and me, though, and we'll take good care of you. There are other areas you're going to have to get used to as well,” Remus explained, smiling a little. With what he knew of Harry, he was sure that wouldn't deter him. All he wanted was the confirmation.“Understood,” Harry nodded. “When do we leave?” He asked again, grinning bigger.“Tonight,” Remus chuckled softly. “About midnight I'm going to show up in your room. It'll be an odd way I'm sure you haven't seen before, but I'll manage. I want you to have everything packed and ready to go. Before then, send Hedwig off and tell her to find Sirius. I'm sure she'll manage. Just be ready because we can't wait around. I want us out as fast as we can. As soon as we're gone, those wards will fall and it'll be a mess. To keep from getting caught, we need you with Sirius and as far away from here as we can get. That we have planned.”“I'll be ready,” Harry told him confidently, mind already racing over what he had to do.Putting a hand on Harry's shoulder and giving a squeeze, Remus said, “I need to go so no one sees me or thinks anything is wrong, but I'll be here. I swear, Harry. Just be ready.”“I will, I promise,” Harry told him with another nod, unable to stop grinning.Nodding, Remus patted him on the back then stood. “Be ready and we'll be fine,” Remus told him. Looking around, making sure that he couldn't see anyone or one of Arabella's cats, he said, “I have to go. We don't want to chance anyone seeing me.” Seeing Harry nod, he rubbed his wet head then quickly left. There was much to tend to.Watching Professor Lupin go, Harry's mind was all over. This was huge and he wanted it. There were doubts, of course, but he would ignore those. Now he would focus on what he had to do. It wouldn't take long, of course, but he wanted to make sure he had it. That and he just hoped this wasn’t a trick. He wasn't sure he could take that.
Checking the clock for about the millionth time in the last hour, Harry let out a sigh. It was about a minute until midnight. His nerves were driving him nuts at this point. Over the last hour, it had gotten progressively worse. The doubts were now there and prodding him loudly. He wasn't going to let them get the better of him, though. Shaking his head, he refused to think about backing out of this. Though he would miss Ron, Hermione and his other friends, not to mention Hogwarts, he was going through with this. If Professor Lupin showed that is. The siren song of getting away from the Dursleys and being with Sirius was too much for him to ignore.
Looking around, he made sure everything was in his trunk, with his broom and Hedwig's cage perched atop it. As he didn't have much in the world, it was easy to pack. That hadn't stopped him from triple and quadruple checking, though. He had done that and made certain everything he wanted from the room was in there. Now that meant waiting. And that was making him mental. When the clock on the desk began beeping, telling him it was midnight, Harry about jumped out of his skin. He expected that, of course, as that was normal, but he was so uptight that everything was doing that, no matter what it was. Looking around, he wondered how the professor would get into his room. It was doubtful that he would come through the front door, of course. That question was answered within seconds.Just as the beeping faded out, there was a soft crack, something that startled Harry again, and Professor Lupin was standing there. Shaking his head, wondering how he managed that, Harry felt his heart hammer faster. It was real and he was leaving! He couldn't believe it. Letting out a tremulous breath, he looked at the professor and said, voice shaky as well, “I'm ready.”Smiling at the obviously uptight Harry, Remus reached out and patted him on the shoulder. “It's fine, Harry, nothing to worry about. Now—are you sure everything is in your trunk? Once we leave, there is no coming back for anything you might have forgotten.”“It's all in there, I've made sure,” Harry assured him with a nod. “Hedwig is off with the instructions. So, I'm all set.”“We'll go then,” Remus told him. Tapping the broom and cage, he shrunk them then had Harry put them in the trunk. Once he did, Remus shrank that as well. Putting it in his pocket, he told Harry, “Grab my arm and shut your eyes. This is going to feel odd, I know, but it's easiest to go about it this way.”Grabbing Remus' arm, Harry gave a shaky sigh and nod. “Ready.” Now it was more real and he was excited and nervous at the same time. He wouldn't back out, though. The professor was here, as he said, so he wouldn't go back on his word.Giving the obviously uptight Harry's arm a pat, Remus smiled then said, “Make sure to keep your eyes closed. You'll be with Sirius in under a minute then we'll explain what we're doing. Nothing at all to worry about, you have my word.” Seeing Harry nod, he Apparated them both away.By the time Albus got the word that the Blood Wards had fallen, Harry was safe in a hidden house in Scotland with Sirius. As it was heavily warded and looked abandoned, there wasn't any chance that anyone would be able to trace Harry, no matter what they did. They would just stay here the one night before moving to another and taking care of the small bits while they waited out the time Sirius needed for tending to other matters. For the first time in his life, Harry had a home with two people that loved him. Never again would he have to worry about being abused, being starved, hated for what he was, all the things he had known all his life. It wouldn't be easy, of course, but it was far better. Harry was finally with his true family. That counted more and did him better than anything else ever would.
