Severus thought that his life was going to get better after Harry Potter killed Voldemort. He thought that he would be able to turn everything around and finally make a life for himself that would make him happy and not be for the benefit of others. He had tried, he really did, but even though he had been acquitted of all charges and it was public knowledge that he was a spy for the Light and had been for the entirety of the war. In fact, there were many of the Death Eaters who were found to be under the Imperious curse, including Lucius Malfoy and the Lestrange brothers.
The Lestranges were placed under the curse by their insane sister, Bellatrix, while Lucius and Draco Malfoy were cursed by none other than Narcissa herself. Narcissa had not only cursed Lucius with the Imperious curse, she also placed him under a love spell to make him fall in love with her. Something that completely destroyed the person he had actually been in love with the entire time, Severus Snape. The two had been a couple before Narcissa had forcefully separated them and the first thing that Lucius did when he was free of the spells was to go straight to Severus.
It was very rocky, trying to start their relationship back up after spending so much time apart, but they ended up in a match that was every bit as passionate and loving as the one they had before they were separated. Severus quit his potions position at Hogwarts and they pooled the money that they had, that hadn’t been taken by the MoM as restitution for fixing all the damage that was done to wizarding homes and businesses, and bought a small shop with an apartment on top of it.
They made and sold potions out of the shop and lived above it. It was vastly different to the standard of living that they had had before the war was won, but they were happy and that’s all that mattered. Or so they thought. While most of the wizarding world had grudgingly forgiven the Death Eaters that were forced to serve under Voldemort, there were still some that saw them as nothing more than murderers. These people formed the DEHA, the Death Eater Hunting Association. Somehow, these people had found out where Severus and Lucius were living. They watched them for weeks and waited until their weekly trip for ingredients to strike. They attacked and burned down the building, and all of their hard work.
When they returned to their home it was nothing but shouldering ashes. They had nothing. They had no choice but appeal to the ministry for help. However forgiving the MoM was when they were acquitted, it was not able to help them when they applied for allowances and housing that was sometimes granted to homeless wizards. They were speaking with an unimpressed secretary when a stroke of pure luck walked by in the form of Harry Potter.
Harry visited the MoM on rare occasions when he has been asked to sit on his Wizengamot seat during a trial. He just so happened to be on his way out when he noticed Severus and Lucius standing at a desk. Curious he wandered closer and half listened to the conversation as he walked by. He was appalled by the secretary’s rudeness and made a comment to her, making her blush furiously. Before he had really thought about it he had apologized to Severus and Lucius and offered them a place in his home so that they could get back on their feet.
The two of them were severely taken back, but after some serious thought they decided to take Harry up on his offer, seeing as they had no other choice. Within the week they had gathered what was salvageable from the wreckage of their home and had moved into the spare bedroom of Harry Potter’s home.
