“What happens if I’m sorted into Slytherin?”
I am back in the shelves of my shop, when I hear a young boy pose this question to what I assume are his parents. This question never fails to cause my blood to boil.
“Then you are in Slytherin. I have known great, strong, and brave people to come out of each house. There is no bad or wrong house” Not the answer I was expecting.
I’m intrigued so I move a little to look between the bottles of Boomslang skin. Bloody hell, it’s Potter! I haven’t seen him in eleven years. He has a kid? Must be the Weasley girl’s, but the kid has blue hair. What the hell? I don’t want to face Potter, but it’s my shop and I don’t have a choice. Before I could walk out the kid started to speak again.
“Who? Who was brave?” the kid asks again. I want to hear this answer so I look between the bottles again.
Potter crouches down in front of the kid and puts his hands on the boy’s shoulders.
“Listen to me Teddy. I will list two people from each house that are brave and good. There is no way to be sorted into a bad house. Your choices determine who you are, not your house. I learned that from Dumbledore.”
“Ok, tell me Ravencalw.”
“Without a doubt, Luna Lovegood. She was there when so many others weren’t. Cho Chang. She also fought in the war.”
“Gryffindor.” I roll my eyes, He’ll say him of course. The Great Potter.
“You’re father. He was an incredibly brave man He had to live his life in fear of being treated poorly because of what he was. He always made the best out of everything.”
Ahhh I know who this kid is. Lupin’s kid.
“And Sirius Black. He didn’t follow blindly into his family’s beliefs. He stood up for what he believed in and fought for it too.”
Hmmm… no Potter? I’m surprised.
“Hufflepuff” I’m curious about this answer. Great people came from Hufflepuff?
“Your mother, she fought for the man she loved, she fought in the war so that you would be able to grow up safer and happier. Cedric Diggory. He was kind and brave and was killed much too young.”
“Now Slytherin.” The kid crosses his arms and gives Potter a look that implies he does not believe Potter can come up with an answer. Here is what I am waiting for. What will ‘The Great One’ say?
“Professor Snape. He held onto a love that would never be returned. He put himself in the greatest of danger to help overthrow Voldemort.” I heard about what Snape did. Potter is right on that, it was brave. Stupid, but Brave. Potter fought to make sure that Snape’s picture hung in the Headmaster’s office at Hogwarts.
“And? You said you could name two for each house.” I’m thinking the same thing.
“Draco Malfoy.” I pull back like I’ve been slapped and knock a box of bat wings off the shelf. Potter looks up but continues to address the kid.
“He’s a lot like Sirius. He fought against his family’s beliefs and did what was right to save a lot of people.”
I have to admit I’m shocked and I really don’t want to walk out there. To make it seem like there was no chance I could have over heard their conversation I sneak to the back store room and act like I’m just coming out.
“Hello and welcome to Slug and Jiggers Apothecary, how may I help you?” I walk out while looking at various bottles in my hand so I don’t make eye contact with Potter.
“Malfoy?” Potter says in a shocked voice.
I look up and narrow my eyes. “Potter.”
“Uh. Hi. What are you doing here?”
I give an exasperated sigh, “I’m working.”
“But, why? I didn’t think you’d need to work.”
“If you must know, I got board and needed something to do. I’ve always liked potions so I bought out Slug and Jiggers about five years ago.”
“You’re hair’s dark.”
“You are as astute as ever.”
“Why is it dark?”
I stop what I’m doing, close my eyes and take a deep breath.
“Again, if you must know, the name Malfoy does not receive the respect it once did. People knew me mostly by the color of my hair more than my face so I darkened my hair. It’s my way of trying to go unnoticed and still have a life.”
“Oh. “
“And still as articulate as ever I see.” I start putting bottles on a display by the till. “ Is there something you need?”
“Ah, yeah. Teddy is starting at Hogwarts this year and we’re here to get his supplies for school.”
Teddy taps Potter to get his attention. “Yes Teddy?” Potter crouches down again.
“Is that the Malfoy you were just talking about?”
Potter shoots me a look out of the corner of his eye. “Yes.”
Teddy looks at me and takes a step towards me with eyes as wide as Galleons. “Uncle Harry says you are good, and kind and brave AND you were in Slytherin!”
“Teddy!” a hissed whisper from Potter.
“He said that did he? Take some additional bludgers to the head have you?”
“No. I was explaining to Teddy how there is no bad house. He wanted me to prove it, so I was telling him about the brave people I knew from each house.” Potter reached out to pull Teddy back towards him and away from me.“And I was on your list? Interesting.”
“Malfoy, you saved my life. Why wouldn’t you be?”
I can feel the heat rising in my cheeks. Teddy is looking at us with rapt attention.
“It’s been just lovely catching up, but do you plan on buying anything?” the sarcasm was thick and Potter rolled his eyes.
“ Forget it. We’ll just get our things and not take up any more of your time
They pull out their list and collect everything they are going to need. Potter pays and not another word is exchanged between us until I say. “Thank you. Come again.”
Potter is at the door and looks over his shoulder at me. He gives a small nod.
“Uncle Harry, I thought you said he was nice.” Teddy whispers.
“Just because you are brave doesn’t make you nice Teddy, learn that now.”

After I close up I head up to my flat above the shop. Seeing Potter has rattled me. I haven’t had much contact with anyone from school for about nine years. We had a lot of bad press for a while. Father and Mother had to serve time in Azkaban for their part in supporting the Dark Lord. They served a reduced sentence because of Potter and the Minister, Kinglsey Shacklebolt. Potter spoke on behalf of my parents, and me, at the hearing. Stating how he had personally witnessed us pulling back from the Dark Lord even before we knew the outcome of the war. He even mentioned how Mother saved his life. Father ended up serving five years, Mother three and I was under watch by the Ministry for five years. Shacklebolt created a minimum security section at Azkaban, not guarded by dementors, and this is where my parents spent their time. When they got out, they moved back to the Manor and have stayed out of the public eye. While out of the public eye, those we thought of as friends pulled away. Either because they were angry that they or their family had to serve more severe sentences or because Potter spoke for us we do not know. It’s been a quite, almost depressing existence for a while now.
I whip up a quick dinner and sit down to listen to the Wizarding Wireless Network. It was a busy day. After Potter and Teddy it was nonstop with kids getting school supplies. I recognized a few people from when I was at Hogwarts, but they didn’t recognize me. It’s odd being on the other end. I was raised to believe shop workers were beneath me. One did not make direct eye contact or have idle chit chat with them. They were there to serve a purpose. I am now that person, I have a purpose to serve to the masses and that is all.
