Prologue
Voldemort twirled his wand between his fingers, a deep frown on his face and wrinkle in his forehead. The news he’d just heard was most displeasing, but didn’t exactly come as a surprise. In fact, he’d had his suspicions on the matter for quite some time. However, that didn’t make this any less distressing.
Severus, his most trusted servant, sat on the other side of his desk allowing the information to sink in. His expression remained the same as always, a bored yet cold look upon his features.
After another moment or two of silence, the Dark Lord finally spoke. “Have you tested all of the younger ones?”
Snape shook his head. “No my Lord. Only a few. However, I did obtain copies of many of their lineages within the past century. They were generally the same as the ones I tested.”
“What about Warren’s girl? Pansy, isn’t it?”
“The Parkinsons tend to keep it in the family.”
“And the Greengrasses? They have two daughters, am I right?”
“Yes, but their parents were first cousins. It’s a wonder those two are able to function normally at all.”
“Adrian Pucey? He’s been a loyal servant and fierce dueler as well.”
“He was one of the ones I tested. His results were no different.”
Voldemort sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. He’d only been in complete control for a little more than three years, but already he was facing a huge problem that could threaten to destroy everything he’d worked so hard for. The root of the dilemma could be summed up in one word; inbreeding.
It was no secret that purebloods were running out. What many didn’t realize was that they had actually been running out twenty years ago. In a mad effort to preserve their bloodlines, they had begun marrying within the family. They’d tried forming marriage contracts with distant cousins, but with so many families having only one or two heirs, some had resorted to more drastic measures such as aunts, uncles, and even siblings. Snape was right, it was a wonder any of the young Death Eaters could function normally with all of the debauchery that occurred within their family trees.
And yet, it wasn’t their faults. These were the ideals that their own parents had engraved into them from young ages, and ones that he himself had helped enforce. Ironic that it was now coming back to bite him in the ass. Most of the young pureblooded girls were turning out to be infertile, and the boy’s sperm was practically useless. Not to mention the fact that the war had taken so many lives that the population count was dwindling. Only a few births had occurred within the last few years, mostly coming from half-blood families. If a pureblooded family was lucky enough to conceive, they either miscarried in the first term, gave birth to stillborns, or their child had severe damage and was practically a squib. With the way things were going now, the wizarding population could dwindle away and become nonexistent in less than a hundred years, making everything he’d accomplished so far mean nothing.
Sensing her master’s discomfort, his familiar Nagini rested her head on his lap and was rewarded by him stroking her. After another moment of contemplative silence, he turned back to Severus. “Is there any pureblood family that stands a chance of conception?”
Snape looked directly into his eyes. “There is one.” At this news, Voldemort perked up a bit and gestured for him to continue. “The Malfoy family my Lord. Though the Blacks are no strangers to inbreeding, Narcissa’s parents were lucky enough to come from two different families. And the last time a Black married a Malfoy was about three centuries ago, meaning there bloodlines were clean when she married Lucius. Draco is the last pureblood who is still intact in every possible way.”
Voldemort leaned back, thinking over what he’d just heard. Of course it was the Malfoys! They were some of his most powerful followers, not to mention wealthiest. Though they had failed him on a few occasions, they’d certainly made up for it since his defeat of Potter. Their money alone had made a huge difference in rebuilding parts of the wizarding world that had been damaged, and created more for his image. They’d been successful in raids and the capture of many Order members who had escaped after the battle at Hogwarts, though there were still a few on the loose. The Manor continued to serve as Headquarters if the need arose such as when the rebels tried to initiate a pitiful attack, though now they mostly held meetings at the ministry. So pleased was he with the Malfoys, that he’d restored Lucius back to his inner circle of Death Eaters along with Draco, who also served as his liege in giving orders to the younger generation. Just last year, he’d also given him the status of diplomat, and he’d proved very useful in his negotiations with France and Russia, both of which were now under Voldemort’s control.
Snape cleared his throat. There are a number of half-bloods under your reign that are fully capable of reproducing as well my Lord. For instance, there’s Zabini.”
Voldemort gave a confused look. “Zabini? I thought he was a pureblood?”
Snape shook his head. “No. His mother told everyone that, but when I obtained his lineage papers, they revealed his father to be a muggle. I doubt the boy has any idea. He’s never even met his father.” Voldemort nodded. He’d heard stories about Estella Zabini. She was nothing short of a whore.
“Well, not that his blood status matters much now. If he’s able to reproduce, then he’s much more valuable to me than most” the Dark Lord said, leaning back in his chair. . A new though entered his mind and he frowned. “Though he and Draco may be well and functioning, that still leaves us with a problem. There’s no one for them to reproduce with. The girls are infertile, and those that aren’t are much too old.”
“I may have a few solutions my Lord” Snape answered, meeting his eyes once more. “Only the pureblooded girls can’t conceive. The half-blood girls stand a better chance, though they are still under par, considering the inbreeding that’s occurred within past generations. From my research, it’s a fifty-fifty chance. The best ones would be those whose families have had no problem conceiving. Take for instance, the Weasleys.”
“The Weasleys” Voldemort snarled, a dark look crossing his features as he thought of the brood of redheads. “What good would they do? And are you telling me that they aren’t pureblooded either?”
Snape shook his head again. “Though I doubt they are aware of it either, but they do have muggle blood within their lineage. Molly’s grandfather was a squib who married a muggle, and Arthur’s mother was a half-blood herself. However, this could work to our advantage my Lord, especially with their daughter.”
Although he could see the logic behind Snape’s word, he still wasn’t pleased. The Weasley’s had been a thorn in his side and were a part of the small group of rebels that still opposed him. He had been successful in removing three of their offspring, though looking back on it now, he probably should have ordered that they merely be taken prisoners instead. Oh well.
“She still would have only a fifty percent chance of conceiving” Voldemort pointed out.
“Which brings me to my second solution” Snape answered, an unreadable look in his eyes. “Mudbloods.”
“Mudbloods?” Voldemort repeated
“Mudbloods” Snape confirmed. “They stand the greatest chance for conception because their blood is fresh and untainted, as far as our purposes go. The fresher the blood, the greater the chance of conceiving.”
Snape noted that his master didn’t seem as outraged by this revelation as he had been about the Weasleys, though that was understandable. (After all, even he found the ginger clan to be nothing more than nuisances, although the youngest member had always seemed much more tolerable than her brothers and parents.) He watched his Lord in silence as he seemed to be contemplating over this news. Though not ideal, this was better than the alternative.
“If we don’t start using them now my Lord, our civilization will become extinct. I assure you, there is no other way” he pushed.
Voldemort was silent for another few minutes before his red eyes focused on Snape once more. “Tell me something Severus. You recall Potter’s mudblood, yes?”
Snape nodded. “Of course, my Lord. Insufferable know it all that one, but brilliant nontheless. And very powerful.”
“More powerful than the Weasley girl?”
“By far.”
Voldemort nodded, still seemingly in thought over something. When he spoke again, Snape knew exactly what it was he was thinking so deeply about. “Any children coming from her would most likely be brilliant and powerful too, correct?”
“More than likely” Snape answered. Any of Granger’s offspring would no doubt be magical geniuses.
“And were her children also to be Draco’s” he asked, a sinister smirk slowly spreading across his face.
“They could be some of the most gifted witches or wizards we’ve ever seen” Snape replied, having already thought of this when he had first found the answer to their problems.
Voldemort seemed pleased with this answer. “I guess that settles it then. Although the problem remains on how to capture her, the Weasley girl, and the others. They’ve been able to avoid capture thus far.”
“I may have a solution to that problem as well, my Lord” Snape answered, leaning forward a bit in his chair. At Voldemort’s surprised and intrigued expression, he let a tight smirk take over his features. “Ronald Weasley.”
