Summary: Just when Severus thinks his life is finally calm and he can live peacefully with his lover, a tragedy occurs that brings the bane of his existence back into his life. The Potions Master will have to dig into the wizard’s past and present to save Potter…from himself.
Special Note: This story is inspired from a story I read once where the idea was that Harry had tried to commit suicide and Dumbledore wanted him to go stay with Severus and Draco. If memory serves me right, the author didn’t write much on it. I’m hoping to use the idea for a story. So the concept/idea is not my own, but I can’t recall the author’s name or the story’s title.Chapter OneNew Beginnings
“He tried to…what?”Sigh. “He tried to commit suicide.”Severus sat alone in the barely lit room. A full glass of cognac sat untouched on the coffee table.“Some of the Order was keeping an eye on him. They noticed he hadn’t come out for a few days. When they went inside, they found him lying on the floor. He brewed a potion.”Severus shook his head. Of all the means at his disposal, he had chosen to brew a potion. That just made everything more confusing. But Albus had taken him to St. Mungo’s; he had seen the boy’s body for himself.“Someone else. Anyone else. Not me, Albus.”“Severus, there is no one else. His parents are dead. Sirius and Remus are dead.”“What of the Weasley’s? Or Granger? Surely they can take in the boy.”Sigh. “They won’t hear of it. Some type of rift has come between them. They refuse to even let me tell them what’s happened.”Severus lowered his head into his hands. The boy had survived the war – killed the ultimate evil – only to try and take his own life just five years later. He was only 23, for Merlin’s sake!“Please, Severus. You’re the only one I can ask this favor of. He needs a close eye to be kept on him and you are more alert to what is normal and not normal behavior for him.”The old Potions Master finally reached for his drink and took a good long sip.“Send him back to his home. Assign an active Order member to watch him.”“Severus, Harry has no home. He apparently set up a backup plan. Shortly after they brought him here, a fire erupted in his home. The few things they were able to save are in that bag beside the bed.”That had sealed it. Despite any disdain he had for Potter, he could not in good conscience cast out Lily’s son. Not the son of his late best friend. Although he had saved the boy time and time again, Severus knew he was only alive because Potter and his friends had saved him from Nagini’s venom.Sigh. “I will think on it, Albus. I make no promises. This is something I need to discuss with my lover first. It would be unfair to him if I didn’t.”Smile. “I understand, Severus. Let me know what you decide.”Severus groaned. He could feel a headache setting in. Correction. A migraine. One not so easily fixed by a potion. He hummed in relief when he felt a hand slide into his hair. He leaned back as his lover settled onto his lap. Severus put his glass down in favor of wrapping his arms around Draco’s waist.“Hello, Sev,” Draco said, greeting him with a warm kiss on the cheek.“Good day at work, Draco?” Severus asked.Draco shrugged.“It was okay. Kingsley came down again with an artifact for me to look at. Naturally, it came from Weasley’s team so it was in about a million pieces,” Draco said, rolling his eyes.Severus stiffened at the mention of the ginger-haired wizard. Draco noticed and asked him if anything was wrong. Severus sighed as he sat back against the couch. Draco slid off his lap to sit beside him with his hand still grasping his older lover’s hand.“What is it, Severus? Did Albus ask you to come back to teaching?” Draco had been there when he had received the owl, asking to see the Potions Master.Severus snorted. “No. He knows better than that.”Draco shrugged again. They both had figured it was a possibility. Shortly after the war, Severus had handed in his resignation; Albus had reluctantly accepted it. Draco had taken his N.E.W.T. exams and had followed right after him with passing scores. Now he worked as an Unspeakable in the Ministry.“It’s Potter, isn’t it?” Draco asked, quietly.Severus smiled. His lover had known him a long time. He knew when something was bothering his lover and he knew if Albus wasn’t asking for him to return, then it must have to do with the Boy Who Lived.“Albus had me go with him to St. Mungo’s,” Severus told him.Draco cracked a smirk.“What did Potter do now? Splinch himself in half?”Severus shook his head.“Potter is on the Third Floor,” Severus explained.Draco frowned. He knew the Third Floor was Potion and Plant Poisoning, as he had just been there last week for a case.“Someone tried to poison Potter?” Draco asked.“No. Potter tried to poison Potter.”The blonde’s mind instantly shut down. He stared at his lover, hoping he had heard wrong, but the serious look on his face told him he hadn’t. As his mind rebooted, Draco fumbled to find the right words.“Wh…Potter tried to…….commit suicide?” Draco said, slowly.Severus squeezed his lover’s hand.“Yes. It seems Potter brewed a potion of his own design and drank it. They managed to clear it from his system, but Albus is worried he’ll try again…and succeed.”Draco sat quietly while digesting this new information. Suicide…suicide was an option he had never…would never associate with his old school rival. It had been five years since the other wizard had done what he was supposed to and save the Wizarding World from the greatest evil. He recalled something happening between Potter and the youngest Weasley that had ended their engagement in that first year after the War. After that, the brunette seemed to disappear off the grid.Severus squeezed Draco’s hand, breaking him out of his introspection. In that moment, his lover looked even older than his age.“Potter is homeless now. Albus has asked that I take him in.”Like him, Draco asked about the Weasley’s or anyone else. The Potions Master repeated back what the Headmaster had given him. Squeezing his hand, Draco stood up to walk over to the fireplace. A quick flick of his wand caused the fire to strengthen. Pocketing his wand, he stared down into the flames.Severus and Draco had only been together for four years; Draco having moved in a year previously. But the couple was very close and very much in love. Draco briefly wondered how Potter would react to living with two old rivals and finding out they were lovers. Except the thought of love stopped that train of thought.I can’t imagine why Potter would try to take his life. Or that his friends would abandon him. None of this makes sense, Draco said to himself.Sighing, Draco turned around to face the dark-haired wizard.“Let him come, Sev. Let Potter come live with us.”Severus opened his mouth to question him, but Draco held up a hand.“The way I see it, Potter’s only other choice is a lifetime of monitoring at St. Mungo’s. That’s not living, Sev. That’s only surviving. Potter deserves better than that.”Severus was in silent agreement. He had been prepared to persuade his lover if his answer had been no, but it seemed the two of them were agreeable to the idea. They did have the room to accommodate the extra person and their home was in a quiet area in a small town known as Rowena’s Haven.“I’ll send Albus an owl in the morning. Meantime, I’ll start dinner.”“Gods above, you’re a blessing, Severus.”/……/
[St. Mungo’s]
Harry was sitting back but upright in the hospital in his private room. He had a muggle Rubik’s cube he was slowly fiddling with; the Healer had been giving small little puzzles to occupy his time. His Healer had been giving him a potion that kept him calm and compliant. But it didn’t stop the nightmares. Or the pain.“Mister?”Harry looked up to see a small child, maybe around 5 or 6 years of age, walking into the room. His eyes were red and puffy with fresh tear streaks down his face. Harry put the cube down and stood up. He knelt down, in which the small child hugged him around the neck. Harry wrapped a loose arm around him to hug him back. When the child pulled back, he began speaking in a sad little voice.“I’m Connor and I *sniff* can’t find my *sniff* Mommy. She had a *sniff* acc-e-dent on her *SNIFF* broom,” he cried softly.Harry nodded his head in understanding. He knew something like that would be taken care of down on the ground floor; somehow, the child had made it up to him on the Third Floor. Harry stood up with Connor in his arms. The little boy wrapped his arms and legs around Harry as he walked out into the hall.As Harry walked down to the Ground Floor, he couldn’t help but let a small smile flutter across his face. Connor’s presence was a nice change of pace in the gloomy hospital. He was surprised they didn’t come across any of the hospital staff along the way. When they reached the Ground Floor, Harry spotted an older witch looking around frantically.Harry stopped and turned so they were facing sideways towards her. Harry tapped gently on his head and when Connor lifted his head, pointed at the woman. Connor’s whole face lit up and he bounced in Harry’s arms.“Mommy!”The woman’s head and gaze snapped around at the sound of the familiar voice. Her own face lit up when she saw Connor. She hurried across the hallway to their side.“Connor Anthony Salieri, there you are. I told you not to wander off,” his mother scolded him gently.Connor stuck out his bottom lip in a pout.“Sorry, Mommy,” he told her.His mother patted him on the back with a small smile before turning that smile to Harry.“Thank you for finding Connor. He loves to wander off. Please let me pay you for your trouble,” the woman said, reaching for her pocket.Harry shook his head. He didn’t need or want any payment for doing the right thing. Connor said it all when he gently took Harry’s face in his hands and leaned forward to kiss him softly on the forehead.“Dank you, Quie’ Man,” Connor murmured.Harry gave him a small smile before handing him over to his mother. The witch asked if Harry was going to be there at St. Mungo’s for a while. Harry shrugged. To be honest, he wasn’t sure. Albus had been by and told him that he was working on helping him. Before the mother and son parted, Connor leaned forward in his mother’s arms to give Harry a final hug. Harry watched them leave, giving a small wave as Connor waved at him from over his mother’s shoulder. When they were gone, a small tear escaped the side of Harry’s eye and slipped down his cheek. He lowered his head down to his chest before turning around and slowly walking back to his room. Once he reached his room, he collapsed onto his bed and curled into a ball. Silent tears streamed down his face as he buried his face into his pillow and cried himself to sleep.End of Chapter OneNew Beginnings
