I should give everyone a fair warning before you start reading this, it is not a happy story. There will be a happy ending, but it is more of a bitter sweet ending.
Also thanks to BickyMonster who beta read this for me!Just to See you SmileChapter 1
Pain, that was the only thing that Harry knew now, day after day. And how long had it actually been? Harry didn't even know any more. It could have been weeks, months, maybe even a whole year since he had been caught off guard on his way home from the Auror office. All it had taken was just one moment of stupidity on his part and this is where he was now, locked up in a dark room; today he was tied up, hanging from the ceiling; yesterday it had been the wall; the day before a table, as one of the three people came in to try something new and creative. At least Harry thought there had only been three of them; he never saw their faces but he was fairly sure that it was two men and a woman. He had only ever heard them talking once, something that they were very careful about. They didn't talk to him or each other when they knew he would be listening, he wasn't worth words. All they wanted from him was to hear him scream. The door opened and Harry tensed, turning his head unseeingly towards the noise trying to decide which one it was today. Lighter footsteps, it was the woman, which meant more potions, and more knives. The footsteps stopped in front of him and Harry braced himself for whatever was going to come now.He flinched violently when the gentle hand reached up and touched his face, fingers brushing over the blindfold that was wrapped tightly around his eyes. Not that something like that was needed, no, this woman had seen to that with one of her potions. Harry had seen flashes of light exploding in his eyes for days after he had been given the potion and the end result was that, even without the blindfold, all he could see was blackness. The fingers left his face but Harry didn't relax. This was only the start of the day and as he heard the sound of a knife being pulled from its sheath he retreated further into his mind to escape the pain that he knew was to come. He was sure that it was only thanks to his Occlumency shields that he had managed to hold onto even a thread of his sanity this long. But as the first bite of the knife cut into his skin and he screamed, he wondered why he even bothered. No one had found him, no one was even looking for him after all this time he was sure of it.He had given up trying to escape; he had tried in the beginning, he tried attacking and lashing out at his captors. He had even managed to kick one of them once, the result of that hadn't been very pleasant. His foot twitched with remembered pain from having a knife carve into the bottom of his feet over and over; he was almost glad that he hadn't been able to see at that point because he didn't want to know how much damage had been done. That had been his last escape attempt; unable to see, and knowing that walking would be possible but very painful, there was no way he would get very far.So Harry retreated further and further into his mind. He just wanted this all to end, he hoped that this time he wouldn't wake up. He had had two years after the war, two years longer than he had expected to live; he had managed to steal that precious time, against all the odds, and that was enough for him. The only thing that truly made him scared about dying was that no one would know what had happened to him because he was very sure that his captors wouldn't be kind enough to send his body back to his loved ones when they were finished.-----xCharlie Weasley sighed as he sat down on the couch at The Burrow. He was home visiting his family again, not that there were many of them around at the moment.Ron was working overtime, trying to find the Death Eaters they all believed to have taken Harry, following up on one of the only leads they had had in over a month. It was hard on the family with Ron working long hours and often traveling abroad to try and track down those who had fled after the war, not that Charlie blamed him. Harry had been missing for seven months already and the more time passed, the more hopeless it seemed that the young wizard would be found alive. Ron, of course, insisted that Harry was alive and that they would find him.Hermione was more logical about it; she hoped that her friend was alive, of course, but Charlie could see her lose more of her hope each time he saw her and could tell that she knew how likely that would be. She never said it out loud though, no one did; if anyone said it out loud, they all felt like they were giving up on their friend. Charlie could understand that, that's why he always came home once a month now to see how the search was going and offer help if he could. He had even done his own searching in Romania, since it was rumored that whoever had taken Harry must have taken the savior out of Britain. The problem was, there were no clues as to who had taken Harry, or even where they might have taken him, if they hadn't just killed him.“Charlie, earth to Charlie.” A hand waved in front of his face and Charlie looked up into the face of his younger brother, George. “You were spacing out there.” George grinned and Charlie was glad to see that it didn't look as forced as it once had, though it still didn't quite meet his eyes.“Thinking too much,” Charlie admitted as he leaned back in his chair. “I take it you closed up shop for the day?” he asked and George nodded, taking a seat next to his brother.“Yeah, all finished for today, and I'm taking a few days off before the back to school rush starts,” George admitted.“I don't blame you, I heard that you had to hire extra people just to keep up with how busy you get,” Charlie said“Yeah,” George sighed. “Harry used to come by and help, that got really crazy though when people found out that he was in the store; they would come by just to see him. Though we seemed to make more money those days as well.” George shook his head and tried to smile at Charlie. “You know it's seven months today?” he asked.“Yeah I know, I really don't want to be the one to say it-”“Then don't,” George cut him off. “Just, not right now okay? I think we all know, but I don't think any of us are ready to hear it,” George pleaded and Charlie couldn't help but agree. Harry had been close to them all in one way or another, Charlie only wished that he had been able to get to know the smaller boy a bit better.Letting out a long sigh Charlie stood up and stretched. “Come on then, let's surprise mum and get the table set without her asking,” he said and looked at George, who looked happy with the change of topic as he too stood up and followed Charlie into the kitchen, where their mother had already started dinner.------xRon cursed as he slammed the papers down onto his desk. Another dead end, he had tried everything and he couldn't find any clues as to where Harry might be. He had connections with people in other countries, and not just his brothers, but even they were out of new information to give him. He had even gone as far as to ask Draco Malfoy. That good for nothing ferret had been no help at all. 'Harry Potter is dead,' was all the blond man had said. Of course Ron had then brought Malfoy in for questioning, because no one knew for sure that Harry was dead, but Malfoy had sounded very sure about that information. Malfoy had been questioned but that had also been a dead end; it appeared that he just didn't believe that anyone could survive seven months with any of the Death Eaters that had escaped. They had a detailed list of all known Death Eaters, had had it since the end of the war, and were slowly rounding them up one by one; it was what they had been working on with Harry when he had gone missing. However, it had been quite clear that none of those they had caught had any idea where Harry was.Ron looked up at the list of names written in large print up on the wall of the office, many of them crossed out now. It was satisfying to see that the list of Death Eaters still loose was getting shorter, but it was still a slow process.“Why are you still here, Ron?” Someone spoke from the doorway to the office.“I was just getting ready to head home, Neville,” Ron sighed, turning to his friend and fellow Auror, ignoring the look that Neville was giving the pile of paperwork that Ron had sitting on his desk“I want to find him too, Ron, but you can't keep letting your work pile up like this,” Neville said as he picked up half the stack of papers. “I can get this done for you at least," he added when he saw how weary the red-head looked. "Go home and get some rest, you look like you need it.”“Thanks, Nev, I'm fine though. I'm just frustrated. They brought in another Death Eater today, they're going to question him under veritaserum tomorrow I heard,” Ron informed his old school friend, who gave him a half smile.“Who was it they brought in?” Neville asked as he shrunk the paperwork down and put it in his bag.“Thorfinn Rowle,” Ron replied, picking up the rest of the paperwork and shoving it in his bag, deciding that Neville had the right idea with taking it home to just get it done. He could probably do most of it tonight, it wasn't like he was going to be able to sleep anyway, no matter how tired he was; at least Hermione would worry less if he could tell her he was awake to do work, rather than avoiding the nightmares.“He might have information on where Harry is then, at least we'll know for sure if they do use veritaserum.” Neville tried to sound hopeful but, like everyone else, he wasn't so sure any Death Eater would have kept Harry alive this long.“Maybe," Ron said with a shrug, not even bothering to get his hopes up, "they're more worried about finding out if he knows where the last few Death Eaters are,” Ron said as he and Neville headed out of the office together.“What will you do, if it turns out no one knows where Harry is?” Neville asked and Ron stopped in front of the lift closing his eyes.“I'd rather not think about it, Neville,” Ron insisted.“You're going to have to eventually. I think...for me, it might be easier when they're all caught. It would mean that he wasn't suffering all this time,” Neville said and Ron glared at him but said nothing as they stepped into the lift. They were silent as they left the ministry together, there really wasn't anything more to be said. “I guess I'll see you tomorrow?” Neville said looking at Ron, who sighed and nodded.“Yeah, I want to be here when they question that Death Eater,” Ron admitted and the two of them went their separate ways. Ron went home to change and wait for Hermione, so that they could floo to the Burrow for dinner together.----------x“Dolohov, you fucking idiot!” the woman screamed as she picked up the nearest thing and threw it at him. Dolohov raised his arm to block the book before it connected with his head. “What were you thinking? You knew the Aurors were tracking Rowle and you told him where we were? I can't believe this!”“Calm down, Alecto, it's not all that bad is it?” her brother Amycus said, trying to calm his raging sister, though he knew it was useless at the moment as she picked up another nearby book and threw that at Dolohov too.“Not that bad? Of course it's that bad! We don't have anywhere else set up that we can bring Potter. I'm not done with him yet,” she hissed narrowing her eyes at her brother.“We've had him for seven months, if we leave now he'll die a slow and painful death of starvation before anyone finds him,” Amycus said, trying to reason with her. “That should be enough pain for him, shouldn't it?”“I still say we should kill the little runt right now and be done with it,” Dolohov insisted and earned twin glares from the siblings.“You have no right to speak now, it's your fault that our fun is being cut short,” Alecto insisted.“We've had him for seven months,” Dolohov said, repeating the point that Amycus had already made. “We should have just killed him long before now anyway. But since we didn't, I thought that Thorfinn might want a chance to take out his own frustrations on the brat. How was I supposed to know that he was going to be caught so easily?” Dolohov defended and had yet another book thrown at him for it.This was getting old; he had no idea why he had teamed up with these crazy siblings. Granted, by sticking together they had managed to capture Harry Potter. It had been his idea to take the boy to Romania, far away from the British Aurors hunting them; the only thing that Dolohov hadn't decided, was where they were staying. The little hut that the Carrows had found was far too close to the Dragon Reserve for his liking but it was secluded and out of the way.And it had worked well, had turned out to be an ideal place to keep Potter; no one had even come close to finding them there in all the months they had had the little brat. Except now Thorfinn had been caught, and he was the only other Death Eater that Dolohov had managed to get in touch with, and he had told the man exactly where they were.“I have an idea,” Alecto said with an evil grin, pulling Dolohov from his thoughts. “A way to get rid of the boy quickly and get out of here before the Aurors catch up with us.”Amycus grinned at his sister; he loved it when she got that look, it usually meant a lot of pain for whoever she had chosen as her target. The last time she had gotten that look was right after Potter had his one and only escape attempt; the end result of that was Alecto blinding the boy with a new potion she had gotten her hands on, before taking her knife and cutting up the bottom of the boy's feet. Even if Potter did manage to escape, he was never going to make it very far now.“And what is your brilliant plan this time?” Dolohov asked.“The dragons at that reserve must be awful hungry for fresh meat,” she said and let the other two think about that for a moment. Amycus laughed almost joyously at the idea but Dolohov looked apprehensive.“That is putting him far too close to other wizards, many of whom still practically worship the boy,” he pointed out with a look of distaste. “If you're going to do that you may as well just let him go. I think it is a stupid plan.” Dolohov glared at the siblings, and when neither of them said anything he shook his head. “Do what you want, I'm done," he told them dismissively, seeing that they really weren't going to listen to him. "I'm getting out of here before the Aurors start showing up,” he said and turned to leave the two of them.He wasn't going to follow through with that crazy plan; it would make a lot more sense to just go back to the hut and kill the boy and be rid of him forever. He remembered far too well that Potter was extremely lucky at surviving situations that should have ultimately brought about his death; just letting him go and assuming that a nearby dragon would eat him was insane.Alecto glared at the back of Dolohov as he walked away, she reached for her wand but her brother stopped her. “Let him go, we don't need him. Let's go get Potter and shove him at the nearest dragon and get out of here as well.”“I just wish we could stay and watch, it would be so much fun,” Alecto said as she almost pouted but her expression morphed into a smile when her brother patted her head.“In a few months, maybe we can go after someone else and start our fun all over again. Maybe the little Malfoy heir,” Amycus said and was happy to see his sister grinning manically at that thought.“Let's go and get this done then,” Alecto said and followed her brother out before they both apparated to the outside of the small hut they had left Harry in.-------xHarry shifted slightly as he started to wake up again and let out a small sigh when he realised that he was still alive. That meant another day of torture, another day of nothing but pain and screaming. He shifted again and winced as his whole body ached. He was laying down today, which probably meant that he was going to be on the table. However, he didn't feel the familiar straps that normally held his wrists and ankles down, and the hard wood against his back was absent.Frowning Harry forced himself to wake up more, to be more alert. It was hard because it had been a while since he had paid so much attention to his surroundings. Clenching his fists, Harry felt the soft grass in his hands, wet from either rain or the morning dew. His breath hitched as he continued to feel the grass under him and realised he could feel a light breeze brushing over him.He was outside, he wasn't strapped down or tied up, and he wasn't locked in that room any more. Lifting his hand carefully and trying to ignore the pain the movement caused he felt around his face before removing the blindfold that had been left on him. He felt a stab of disappointment when it didn't change anything, though he wasn't really surprised to find that he still couldn't see when he opened his eyes to try and look around. It was still pitch black, but it still felt nice to have that damn thing off.He closed his eyes when the wind blew causing his eyes to feel like they were burning; he didn't know if that was a good or a bad thing, but that was something to think about later. Right now he had to figure out what was going on, why he was outside. His captors wouldn't have just let him go, so he had to wonder if his magic had finally saved him. He doubted that; he had tried to escape before by apparating and it hadn't worked then, so he was fairly sure that it wouldn't have worked spontaneously now.Rolling himself onto his side, Harry cried out as the cuts on his back were pulled open again. He bit his lip to stop himself from making any noise; if his captors were playing a new game with him, he didn't want to draw any attention to himself. Clenching his teeth and hissing with every move he made Harry forced himself to his feet only to collapse back to the ground with how tender the bottom of his feet were. He was sure they were at least mostly healed by now but it still hurt to walk on them.Harry lay there in the grass gasping for breath. He was still in so much pain, but he was outside, and that meant that he could escape. Or maybe that was what his captors had in mind, let him out and give him a taste of freedom that he wanted so badly, give him false hope before locking him away again. Harry cried then and forced himself back to his feet, biting his lip hard enough to draw blood as he refused to cry out at the pain that made it difficult to breath. He forced his first step forward and stumbled, but managed to stay on his feet. Each step felt more painful than the last as his abused body protested at each move he forced it to make. Mentally he counted how many steps he was taking, how many steps he was taking away from those people. At least he hoped it was away from them, he had no way of knowing what the best direction was, but if he kept walking straight he was sure to come across something eventually. One hundred steps Harry managed to take before he collapsed again; that wasn't nearly far enough and he knew it, but he was dizzy with pain and couldn't hold himself up any more. “Please...” Harry's voice cracked and was too soft to even be a whisper. His only thought, as he felt himself losing consciousness, was that he hoped he didn't wake back up in that place. If he was outside, he may have a chance now, as slim as it was.-----xWhen Harry next woke he was surprised to find that he was still outside. His captors hadn't locked him back up again, though Harry didn't know if this was good or bad; he had no way of telling if they were just watching him suffer, playing with him or if he really did have a chance of getting home.Shifting around slightly, Harry winced; he was still in so much pain and he really had no idea how he was going to get anywhere in the condition he was in. He had never felt more helpless before in his life. Harry continued to lay there on the cool grass, the air a lot colder than it had been when he had woken up last time; listening to what was around him, Harry could hear crickets, indicating it was night time, which would explain why it was cooler.Taking a deep breath Harry slowly pulled himself to his feet, biting his lip hard and focusing on just breathing as he started walking forwards again. It was awkward and he felt clumsy without his vision, but he kept his hands stretched out in front of him so that he was less likely to walk into something and injure is already abused body. Stumbling and taking slow small steps, Harry continued on his way, tears were falling freely down his face as he moved as fast as he could despite how much pain he was in; he wanted to avoid stepping on rocks or twigs, but knew that would be impossible. He counted his steps like he had before, and every fifty steps he stopped to catch his breath. It was during one of these rest stops that Harry heard the first sound of something other than the normal sounds of night. It was a loud roaring sound that had Harry holding his breath, it was a sound that he wasn't likely to forget any time soon; after the first task in the Triwizard Tournament and the time that he, Hermione and Ron had broken into Gringotts, Harry was sure he would be able to recognise the sound of a dragon anywhere. He listened again as the creature roared once more, it sounded close and one thing Harry knew for sure was that he wanted to be going away from that noise. So he turned slightly and started walking away from the direction he could hear the dragon. A third roar from the dragon, followed almost immediately by another.Harry started moving faster as the dragon sounded like it was getting closer, his heart hammering in his chest; it was terrifying knowing that the huge animal was that close but being unable to see where it was or where he was going. Each step sent a shock wave of pain through his whole body and he felt as if he were going to pass out again, but the adrenaline flooding his body was enough to keep him moving forward as quickly as he could. His foot caught on something and sent him tumbling to the ground, Harry screamed, pain shooting through his body as he rolled down a small hill. When he finally came to a stop, Harry couldn't stop from crying; he couldn't move any more, and with the whoosh sound of wings and a loud thud, Harry knew that the Dragon had landed somewhere nearby. He was sure he knew now why his captors had left him out here but there was nothing he could do about it as he felt himself slipping into unconsciousness once again and the sound of the roar from the Dragon was the last thing he heard.TBCOkay, so here is the first chapter of this fic! It is the third one I am working on and is not my main focus. I will be updating this when I have the time, but I wanted to post it and see what you all think!
