Okay, so this is my version of a Snape adopts Harry story. Because clearly there are not enough of them out there! I can't say if this will be any better or worse than any of the others, but I hope you all enjoy it just the same!Hidden Truths of an Innocent SoulChapter 1
Nothing ever went according to plan, that was something that Harry was learning very quickly. Looking around at the office that he had only been in once before, at the beginning of the school year, Harry went over everything that he, Ron, and Hermione had planned out. He was trying to find out where it had gone wrong; all he had wanted to do was prove that it wasn't him behind the attacks in the school. The plan to sneak into Slytherin had seemed like a very good one at the time, and everything had been going so well up till now. They had managed to make the Polyjuice potion, and had gotten the hairs that they needed, but an accident with the potion had left only enough for one person. There hadn't been any time to find a way for all three of them to sneak in, so Harry had gone alone, despite Hermione's protestations and Ron's sulking about not being able to join him.Harry had been convinced that it was Malfoy behind the attacks or, at the very least, that he knew who was; the blond prat had never made a secret about hating muggle-borns. He was the only person Harry could think of that could even be capable of unleashing a monster in the castle. But even disguised as Crabbe, Harry hadn't been able to get any information from Malfoy; the blond had kept insisting he didn't know and in the end Harry had run out of time; in the end he had been caught by Malfoy of all people. So he was now literally stuck to a chair in Snape's office, while the Potions master went to get Dumbledore. He had tried moving from the chair only once, that had caused the chair to wrap it's arms around Harry, keeping him in the chair, and leaving the small twelve year old silently cursing Snape. The office door opened and Harry turned around as best he could to see Snape return with the Headmaster, McGonagall following behind the two wizards."I believe I told you not to move from that chair, Mr. Potter," Snape said, taking in the sight of the trapped boy."I didn't," Harry insisted indignantly. "I just moved a little and your chair attacked me," Harry said, ignoring the glare the man was giving him."Given the circumstances, Mr Potter," McGonagall said sternly, "and that Professor Snape may have some say in your punishment, you might want to consider speaking a little more courteously."Harry looked quickly to McGonagall, wanting to argue that Snape would never treat him fairly anyway; however, the stern look that he was receiving from his head of house made Harry look away quickly. She was upset with him and most likely wouldn't be of any help getting him out of trouble this time. He instead he looked to Dumbledore, wondering if the old wizard would help. Harry felt like curling up and hiding from that look of disappointment the Headmaster was giving him, and he knew then that he was going to have to deal with whatever punishment they decided to give him."Harry," Dumbledore sighed, waving his wand at the chair that was holding Harry. The arms let the small boy go. "Please tell me what happened," he requested. Harry chewed on his lower up not really wanting to say anything, because if he really thought about what he had done, using a potion to sneak into Slytherin, his whole idea seemed really stupid. Maybe if he had trusted Dumbledore and had told the Headmaster his suspicions about Malfoy before, or about that voice he kept hearing, then maybe he wouldn't be sitting here now.Harry glanced briefly back up at Dumbledore, who hadn't said anything else and waiting patiently for Harry to start talking. Taking a deep breath, Harry saw no other way out of this mess, though his voice was soft as he spoke. "I was trying to find out who the heir of Slytherin was, sir," Harry answered, still not looking fully up at Dumbledore. The older wizard just nodded but said nothing, waiting for Harry to continue. "We... well, I thought it might have been Malfoy," he confessed.“That is a very serious accusation, Mr. Potter,” McGonagall said and Harry looked at her once more, biting his lower lip again."Is there something that lead you to believe that Mr. Malfoy might have been behind these attacks?" Dumbledore asked.Harry opened his mouth, but closed it without saying anything trying to think if he really did have any reason to believe that it had been Malfoy. He, Ron and Hermione had been so sure about it before, but even with how sure they had been, there was no proof, nothing that had really told them that it was Malfoy."No, sir," Harry said softly, lowering his head so he wasn't looking at anyone anymore. He didn't think he could handle seeing the looks of disappointment from Dumbledore or McGonagall, or Snape sneering at him."Is there anything else you wish to tell me, Harry?" Dumbledore asked and Harry just shook his head, even as a small voice told him that he should tell the Headmaster about what he had been hearing. But Harry just bit down on his lip harder and refused to say anything; he was already in trouble, and most of the school still thought he was behind the attacks, he didn't need anyone thinking he was insane as well. So Harry decided would deal with the detention for this, but he was now back at square one with his search."Harry, do you understand that what you did was wrong and dangerous?" Dumbledore asked and Harry looked up at him with a look of confusion. "You broke the rules by sneaking into the Slytherin common room, but you did so under the effects of polyjuice potion, am I correct?""Yes, sir..." Harry felt his stomach knotting up as he looked at the aged face of the Headmaster; he didn't know where this was headed, but he got the feeling he wasn't going to like it."You stole ingredients from Snape's supply closet, and brewed a potion that even seventh years have trouble with," Dumbledore continued."I find it hard to believe that with Potter's potion skill he managed to brew something that advanced," Snape said, glaring at Harry. "Might I suggest that we find Ms. Granger.""Hermione had nothing to do with it!" Harry said quickly. "It was just me." Harry couldn't let Hermione get in trouble for this, even if she was the one to brew the potion. He had been the one stupid enough to get caught.Dumbledore looked down at Harry before nodding once. "Very well, Harry. If you are taking full responsibility for this then we will go to my office. Your Head of House and I will discuss your punishment with you."Snape narrowed his eyes. "Headmaster-" he spoke but Dumbledore held a hand up.“I believe this matter is now settled, Severus,” Dumbledore said and then turned once again to Harry. “Now, Harry, please follow me.” Dumbledore waited until Harry stood up before leaving the office. Harry looked to McGonagall before taking another deep breath and following the Headmaster out, McGonagall following behind him.------xHermione watched as Ron paced back and forth in the common room. “It's been hours, he should have been back by now,” Ron insisted looking at Hermione, who checked the time again.“It's too late for us to go out and look for him,” Hermione said, looking worried. She had known it was a bad idea to let Harry go alone but they had needed to do something.“What if he was caught?” Ron asked as he continued his worried pacing. Before Hermione could say anything, however, the portrait door opened. Both Ron and Hermione looked over and saw Harry climbing through the portrait hole.“Harry! There you are, we were getting worried,” Hermione said but stopped talking when she saw McGonagall step in behind Harry, looking from her Head of House to Harry and back again.“Mate... what happened?” Ron asked but Harry just shook his head.“Make sure your things are packed, I will collect you in Entrance Hall first thing in the morning,” she informed Harry, who nodded and his sad gaze followed McGonagall as she left the common room again. He watched the portrait door close before looking at Ron and Hermione.“Mate?” Ron asked, giving his friend a worried look.“I got caught,” Harry said softly, his mind still playing through everything that had happened that night. And his punishment; he knew how lucky he actually was, but at the moment he didn't feel very lucky at all.“You're not expelled are you?” Ron asked with wide eyes. Harry shook his head.“No, not expelled... but I'm suspended for two weeks. I have to go back to the Dursleys' tomorrow,” Harry told his two friends and Ron's face went a bit pale at hearing that, remembering how he and his brothers had broken Harry out of his own house that summer.“They can't send you back there,” Ron protested. “Maybe we can talk to Dumbledore in the morning, he can talk to my parents and you could go there for the two weeks?” Ron suggested but Harry shook his head.“I don't think they'd allow that. But it's fine, it's only for two weeks, and they'll all be busy to bother to much with me anyway,” Harry said trying to shrug it off. “I need to go make sure my things are packed,” he said and didn't wait around for an answer before running up the stairs to the second-year boy's dorm. He was just glad that the school was mostly empty of students; though all of them would be hearing about it when they got back from Christmas break, he wouldn't have to deal with it until he got back.Harry was halfway done with his packing when Ron and Hermione both came up; they sat on Ron's bed and watched Harry silently. There wasn't anything they could say to make the situation better. Suspension was a lot better than being expelled, but it didn't matter because Harry was still thought to be the heir of Slytherin, and being suspended like this could just fuel that rumor more.“This could work in your favor you know,” Ron spoke up finally and Harry looked up from where he was packing his trunk.“How could this be a good thing?” Hermione demanded to know. “He's really lucky that he wasn't expelled for this!”Ron held his hands up wanting to get his explanation out before Harry and Hermione started thinking he was a complete idiot. “I know that, and I'm real sorry you got caught mate, but hear me out,” Ron said. “If Harry's not in school, and someone else is attacked then that would prove that he's not the heir of Slytherin. Not that I want anyone else to be attacked, but seriously, think about it. It could work in your favor,” Ron said.“Unless people think I just gave my 'monster' orders before I left the school,” Harry pointed out.“That's true.” Hermione looked thoughtful. “But Ron might be right, if something happens while you're not in the school, it could be what you need to prove you're not the one behind the attacks,” Hermione said.“Yeah, so this whole thing wasn't a complete waste of time!” Ron said with a grin. Harry frowned at them both and shook his head.“I'm going to bed.” Harry closed his trunk and, without changing out of his clothes, he climbed into his bed and closed the curtains shut. The whole nights events were slowly sinking in; he closed his eyes forcing himself to try and sleep as he continued thinking over the nights events, and how he could have done things differently.------------------------------xBy the time morning came, Harry had only managed an hour of sleep before he had to drag himself out of bed and get ready for the day. He wasn't worried about how he would be getting back to the Dursleys' as it had been decided last night that McGonagall would be taking him back to 4 Privet Drive herself. An owl had been sent to his Aunt and Uncle last night to inform them; Harry could almost picture Uncle Vernon's face as the large man read the letter. As Harry made sure he had everything, he turned his attention to Ron's bed only to find it empty. He had hoped he would at least see his best friend before he left. Giving his area one more look over, Harry decided that he had stalled long enough; he grabbed his trunk and made his way down to the Entrance Hall.He saw McGonagall was already waiting for him. Harry avoided looking at her as he came down the last few steps, he didn't want to see the look of disappointment he was sure to be getting from his Head of House. He was grateful, however, that neither Snape nor Malfoy was there to see him off.“Are you ready to go, Potter?” McGonagall asked. Harry nodded his head.“Yes, Professor,” he replied. Making sure he had a firm hold on his trunk ready to follow his Head of House.“One moment,” she said putting a hand on his shoulder. “I'm going shrink your trunk down, it will be easier for you to carry that way,” she said and Harry nodded, stepping away from his trunk and watching as the whole thing shrunk down so that it could easily fit in his pocket. “I will restore it once we arrive at your Aunt and Uncle's house.”Harry nodded, still not looking at McGonagall. He followed her silently out of the school mentally preparing himself to face his Uncle, Harry wasn't sure what to expect, but he knew it wasn't going to be good.-------------------xHarry didn't know why he had been expecting to take the train back to London, but he was highly disappointed when McGonagall had explained the process of a portkey to him. Then, before he even knew it, he was landing hard on the ground just a few blocks from the Dursleys' house. He had hoped there would have been more time to prepare himself for what was to come; though he could agree that a portkey was a faster way to travel, he decided that he would have much rather taken the train.“Are you alright, Potter?” McGonagall asked, holding out a hand to help him up. Harry ignored the offered help and pulled himself back up to his feet. He could hear genuine concern in her voice, but he only nodded silently in answer to her question before he looked around at where they were. Harry instantly recognised where they were, it was a small patch of trees by the playground not too far from where the Dursley's lived.“Your Aunt and Uncle should be expecting us, let's not keep them waiting,” she said. Harry nodded again, still not saying anything, or even looking at his Head of House, so he missed the worried look that McGonagall gave him. Ever since last night Harry had been mostly silent, sitting and accepting his punishment. One would think that he had already learned his lesson, but McGonagall wondered if there was more to the boy's sudden silence.Harry waited for McGonagall to start walking before he followed her, heading down the street towards Number 4. Harry half hoped that his aunt and uncle wouldn't be home, but that small hope was crushed as soon as he saw the car was in the drive way.“Um... Professor,” Harry said, when he saw McGonagall walking up to the door. “I can just go inside myself... I mean, my relatives don't really like guests during the holidays,” Harry said looking up at his Head of House. In all honesty, Harry didn't know how his aunt and uncle would react to having a full grown wizard on their doorstep, they were bound to be angry enough with Harry being sent back to them unexpectedly.McGonagall's expression softened and she nodded once. “I will restore your trunk now then,” she said, motioning for Harry to come up onto the steps, not completely hidden, but hidden enough that when Harry held his shrunken trunk out to her, she was able to restore it without being noticed. “Someone will be back to collect you in two weeks,” McGonagall said. Harry nodded his understanding waiting until his teacher had reached the end of the walkway before he turned and knocked on the door.He stood there and waited for a few minutes, debating if he should try knocking again, though he had no doubt that the Dursley's had heard him. Letting out a small sigh, he turned to see if McGonagall had gone completely; he didn't see her. Letting out a long sigh, he lay his trunk down flat and sat on it.He sat there for another ten minutes before he decided to try knocking on the door again, figuring that no matter what he did at this point he was going to be in trouble. If he stayed out here where the neighbors could see him, he would get in trouble; if he knocked to loudly on the door, he would get in trouble. It was always a no win situation for him when it came to the Dursleys. It was only when he started knocking for a third time, that the door was swung open. The front of his shirt was grabbed and he was dragged forcefully into the house by his uncle.“So it's true then, boy, that freak school of yours has kicked you out?” Vernon spat keeping a firm hold on Harry's shirt.“I wasn't kicked out, I was just suspended.” Harry said but one hard shake from his uncle had him falling silent.“No back talking.” Vernon snapped shoving Harry towards the stairs. “Get up to your room, and you're not to come out!”Harry looked worriedly at his uncle as the large man dragged the trunk inside, throwing it into the cupboard under the stairs and locking it away like he had during the summer. Harry didn't move until Vernon looked back at him, his eyes narrowed. Hurrying up the stairs and into his room, Harry closed the door behind him quickly. Looking around his room, the first thing he noticed was how cold it was in there, not completely freezing, but definitely colder than the rest of the house was.Harry's eyes landed on the window that he had escaped from that past summer; the bars were thankfully still missing, one thing Harry was grateful for, it meant that he would still have a way out if the Dursleys tried to keep him from returning to Hogwarts. However, as he pushed off the door and went to the window, he found out why his room was so cold, having the bars ripped right off the window had caused some damage, there was an obvious draft coming from the window, and upon closer inspection Harry found a small hole in the window frame, most likely left from when the bars had been ripped free from the house. He found something to stuff in the corner of the windowsill hoping that would cut down on the draft some.Backing up to sit on his bed Harry stared out the window, until he heard the familiar sound of the locks on his door. Turning to look at the door, he sighed before laying back on his bed to now stare at the ceiling, deciding that this was going to be a very long two weeks. He almost wished that he had brought Hedwig back with him, but it wouldn't have been fair for her to be locked up as well, when she could stay perfectly safe, and free, at Hogwarts. Closing his eyes, Harry decided that there was nothing much to do except sleep at the moment. He wasn't all that tired, however he got the feeling he would be thankful for the extra sleep later.TBCAnd there is the first chapter! I hope you all enjoyed it, I know it was a rather short chapter, I hope future chapters will be a tad longer than this one. But now I come to a rather important question that I do need an answer to, because I can continue this story one of two ways.I can continue on and go into detail about Harry's two weeks with the Dursley's. Or I can time jump the two weeks, and bring them up later in the story. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
