Turning life upside Down
LPOV
It had all started on a sunny morning. On a morning where Lilly Potter never thought anything would happen.
She had been sitting at her kitchen table with her son, Harry, doing his homework for the next year at Hogwarts. He had been working hard on some Potions-Essay, while she had been peeling potatoes. It was their ritual, she would work in the kitchen and prepare lunch and Harry would keep her company while working on his homework or reading a book (or twelve) about Quidditch. There would be soft conversations going on between them occasionally. They were close, her and Harry, especially since he was her only child and she showered him with affection.
The calm would keep until his father came home from work. Then, their small kitchen would burst with life through James’ boisterous laughter and his loud voice, where he was telling them about his day at work as an Auror. Harry would listen for a while, then change the subject to Quidditch or quietly excuse himself and go up to his room, where he would spend the time until dinner listening to his Mp3-player.
It sometimes worried her, this distance between Harry and James. But it was a given, in a way, because Harry was a quiet, laid-back child and James was....well, James. He was a bit full of himself, a touch arrogant and loud. Still, he was a sweet and kind man, when he remembered to worry about other peoples’ feelings.
Well, Lily mused to herself, that's why I fell in love with him in the first place. It’s not his fault that I didn’t consider how exhausting it sometimes was to be married to a man like James.
Just as she was finishing her thought, Harry’s head jerked up from his Parchment and swiveled around to the doorway of the living room.
“I think someone is coming, Mom.” said Harry quietly.
It always unnerved Lily that her son could feel when someone would come through the Floo-Network.
“I will see who it is. Keep on with your homework, Harry.” she answered.
Lily stood up slowly, and walked into the living room, but not without ruffling her sons’ hair and giving him a kiss. Harry complained loudly, but still let her do it. At 14, it might be embarrassing for him to be seen like that, but privately, he still needed his mothers’ affection.
Lily went over to her fireplace and waited, looking around her living room, with the worn but comfortable dark leather furniture and her pretty, white carpet. It was a small house they lived in, to James’ chagrin. He had wanted a big thing, with more windows than anyone could need or want.
“So that people know I can take care of my family!” he had said.
But Lily had put her foot down and had told him she wanted something small and cozy. She was not looking to make a statement, but to build a home. And how could she do that in a house where they would need staff to maintain even the smallest bit of cleanliness?
So James had given in and when they had found this house, they had both agreed immediately. It was small, with the entrance leading directly into the living-room. To the left was the way into the kitchen, to the right stairs to the three bedrooms and the bath. Halfway under the stairs was the fireplace. It had taken both her and James to enlarge it safely with spells, so a person could step through it. Opposite from the Entrance was the door to the garden. She hadn't wanted a Veranda. Instead, she had painstakingly collected rocks and put them in the ground in front of the door, just enough to not sink into the earth when stepping out. From the outside, the house was painted a pale yellow, offset by their glaringly purple Doors and windows. It was small and adorable and theirs.
Just as she finished looking around, she heard the telltale whoosh from the fireplace. The flames had turned green, and a moment later, Albus Dumbledore stepped through.
“Good morning, my dear Lily, what a good morning indeed! How are you these days? And Harry? I hope I am not interrupting anything, with me showing up unannounced! Oh dear, now that I think about it, I really should have owled first! I am so terribly sorry!” Dumbledore chortled happily as a greeting. Lily, accustomed to his ways, just smiled kindly and answered: “Not at all, Albus, you are always welcome here. Harry and I are fine, thank you for asking. I hope all is well? “
“Yes, yes, but I do have something to discuss with you, if you have the time?” Albus replied.
Lily immediately offered the Headmaster of Hogwarts a chair and brought him tea and her homemade lemon scones, which he loved. Harry had made a short appearance to greet the Headmaster, but was immediately send back to the kitchen to finish his homework.
Albus was watching Lily with his twinkling blue eyes, slightly hidden behind his half-moon glasses. His robes today where of a shocking magenta, adorned with little, gold-colored dragons, that seemed to move somewhere else every time Lily looked at them. His hat was equally magenta with the same moving dragons. All in all, he looked very ...Dumbledorish. Yes, that was a good way to describe him.
After making a bit of small talk, Lily changed the topic.
“What is it you wanted to talk to me about, Professor?”
The Headmaster hesitated for a moment, and then proceeded to tell her what exactly he wanted her to do.
All Lily could do, was listen in stunned silence until he had finished turning her world upside down.
RPOVOn another continent altogether, Russel Prince was sitting in his kitchen with a frown on his face. He was going over some very complicated Arithmantic equations and could make neither heads nor tails of it. It bugged him immensely that he could not solve this problem. And neither his wife nor his youngest daughter, who was insanely good at Arithmancy, were able to solve this. That galled him even more. He spend another good 20 minutes pondering the problem, then heaved a big sigh of defeat and stood up to make lunch before his four ravenous kids stormed the kitchen and ate him. Only yesterday one of them had started chewing his arm.
“Just kidding!” his son had said, but he didn´t really believe that.
He had seen his eldest, (Mikhail) devour five huge Burgers with two bites each and still be hungry. He didn´t remember being that hungry at 16, but maybe that had been the reason he had been scrawny and too thin. Not like Mikhail, who was already nearly six feet tall and muscular.
Well, Russel thought, at least I did grow into my body later in life.
But still, the old embarrassments and resentments would sometimes cloud his mind and he wished he was able to go back in time and tell his younger self to at least shower once in a while.
He gave a flick of his wand to get the potatoes peeled and walked over to the fridge to take out the meat. Still with his equations in mind, he actually finished preparing lunch just as his children started piling in. With a smile on his face he watched their antics and went to their lab in the basement to get his wife.
They sat down at the dining table together, all six of them, and spent a rather loud lunch together.
Life is good, he thought, satisfied.

He is doing it again! Why can he not just sit still and quiet and let someone else talk? But no, James Potter just could not handle being left out of a conversation, Lily thought, annoyed at her husband.
They were standing at the local Gas Station of somewhere in the middle of nowhere, as her son had nicely described it. It had been a real challenge, finding the small town in Kansas. It had been made even more complicated by the fact that she had to bring her son, her husband and his two best friends along. She was livid, but she knew there was no sense in telling her husband what she really thought about this project.
On the day when Dumbledore had asked for his favor, James had, surprisingly, come back early from work and heard everything the Headmaster had said. He had immediately insisted on accompanying her to the small town where her quarry lived. He had taken his paid leave early, completely messing up their plans to vacation in Australia for Harry’s winter break.
It had become a harrowing three days and a farce of a journey, with Sirius Black and Remus Lupin accompanying them. And of course, since no one stayed back in England to watch him, Harry had to come too.
It had been horrible journey made worse since they travelled like Muggles and she was the only Muggleborn amongst their group. Now, they were nearly there, only a few miles down the road and her husband was talking. A lot.
Lily turned around and walked back to the car, where Harry and Remus were sitting in the backseat, heads bowed over a book. Sirius was standing next to the car and smoking a cigarette, looking bored.
“He is still talking isn´t he?” Sirius asked her when she reached the car.
“Yes. And he isn´t going to stop anytime soon, by the looks of it. The old man already gave me the directions.” She answered, completely at the end of her patience.
She looked around her, still musing about the weird way Americans were able to build big cities in the middle of nowhere. She had thought they would end up in a small town, but was surprised to find their destination to be a bigger city.
“What is the place called again? I know it was something to do with ‘City’…” Sirius asked her, apparently trying to make conversation.
“Garden City. It’s called Garden city.” She answered, still distracted. She discreetly pulled out her wand and went through a list of hexes that would not create any sparkles or lights. She had thought of one, when she felt him grab her arm forcefully.
“Don’t.” he said quietly, “It won’t help. The only thing this will accomplish is him being mad at you for the rest of the drive. Remus is already on edge, so soon after the full moon.”
She looked at her husband’s best friend, knowing he was right, but still annoyed. He stared her right in the eyes and started stroking his thumb over the exposed skin of her wrist, making her feel uncomfortable. She vividly remembered that day, a week before her wedding, when he had shown up drunk at her parent’s house. She had moved back in with them, in preparation for the wedding. He had been completely out of character, sobbing on the steps to her front door and begging her to reconsider marrying James. Apparently, he had been in love with her since third year and hadn’t known how to express his feeling, just to have her be ‘snatched away by James. It had taken her nearly an hour and three Sober-Up Potions to get him coherent enough so he would notice what he was doing. He had been embarrassed and apologetic, making her promise to never tell a soul of this. He, on the other hand, had promised to never bring his feelings up again.
It had been uncomfortable for a while, but in the end she had thought he had gotten over his feelings for her, even starting a serious relationship with a witch, that held nearly three years. Clarissa had been a sweet witch and they had grown to be close friends. In the end, though, she had died from an explosion in the ministry lab she had been working in. They all had thought it would devastate Sirius, make him go into an even deeper depression. But it had had the opposite effect, making him clean up his act, stop his incessant drinking and open up a very successful Pub in Diagon Alley, buying the Leaky Cauldron and turning it into a small, but beautiful hotel.
She shook herself out of her reverie and started to say something, when she heard James’ footsteps com closer.
“What is going on?” he asked with suppressed rage in his voice. She looked at him and saw that he had furrowed his brows and his eyes were sparkling angrily, already figuring that he was letting his jealousy rule.
“Your dear wife was going to hex you, I stopped her.” Sirius said matter of factly, lifting her arm that was gripping her wand and showing it to James.
She felt herself go red in the face and wrenched her hand away.
“You were talking too much and taking too long. I want this business over with!” she replied embarrassed and angry. The nerve of both of them!
She turned away and got back in the car, slamming the door and startling both Harry and Remus. James was standing opposite Sirius, with an apologetic look on his face and saying something to Sirius.
“Everything alright, Mom?” Harry asked her hesitantly. Remus stayed silent, looking out the windshield at his two best friends.
“Yes, everything is fine, Harry. Don’t worry.” She replied, struggling to stay calm. This whole situation had her on edge and her husband thinking there was something going on with Sirius was just too much.
She watched as both men turned around and returned to the car, with Sirius getting in the back and James taking the passenger’s seat.
“Lily…” James started, but she cut him off before he could say anymore. They didn’t have to do this in front of Harry.
“It’s okay. I understand.”
She started the car and turned up the radio, effectively shutting down any conversation. Turning the car towards the road, with the directions the old man had given her in her mind, she pulled out of the Gas Station.
