Prologue
Research from Dr Simon Day, of the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London, found that if the Cumbre Vieja – an active but dormant volcano – were to erupt, the western flank of the mountain could tumble into the sea.
He told Daily Star Online the monster volcano has erupted roughly once every 50 to 70 years on average, each time raising the probability of a collapse.
It last erupted in 1971, meaning another violent outburst of lava could be due within the next three years.
This eruption could cause the landslide, which will unleash a deadly wall of water, initially almost 3,000 ft high and several miles wide, to hurtle towards the UK’s southern shores.

As a whole, the Wizarding World is arrogant and views themselves as better than Muggles in every way. Most times this is somewhat accurate. After all, things which affect Muggles don’t concern them so much because of their Magic. They can Apparate safely in the worst blizzards while Muggles end up housebound. The only thing blizzards affect is owl post. It was the same for most natural events such as rain, heat, whatever. They didn’t need what Muggles did to stay comfortable or out of danger. However, in some vital areas they weren’t as well off.
Because of how natural events affected them, Muggles set up very sophisticated tracking, monitoring, and warning systems to aid them. Wizards didn’t have them because they weren’t as bothered. They also didn’t have the communication systems Muggles did which could warn in an instant and spread the word rapidly. While the Floo and Wireless were good, they weren’t on a par with Muggle communications. It also took time for people to get through to those who would disseminate the warnings. This left them at a disadvantage they couldn’t overcome when times were bad.
For those in the UK, such disasters were few and far in between. The last most could remember were the wars. As for the rest? They weren’t bothered. This would come to bite them in a huge way and leave their world scrambling.
Chapter 1
While Harry walked towards the cave where he would meet Sirius, his brow furrowed. There was something wrong. He could feel it. However, he didn’t know what it was or how it related to anything. As his shoes crunched over the road which lead to the cave Sirius promised to meet him in, he couldn’t shake a feeling of deep foreboding. Not any kind of seer and having no aptitude towards prediction or reading the future, he knew it wouldn’t end up related to that codswallop, but he couldn’t get rid of the feeling.
Eyes darting all over, he felt tense. Umbridge had become a huge problem and he wouldn’t put it past her to have someone follow him. With the position Sirius found himself in, he sure didn’t want to lead anyone to him! Though Sirius swore this plan would work and he was safe, not to mention how Harry desperately wanted to talk to him, he still didn’t want to put his godfather in any more danger than he was already in. No, none of it would be worth that. Since this was the first Hogsmeade visit of the year and people were everywhere, with the new ones scattered all over, it had been hard to keep track to ensure he wasn’t followed. He wouldn’t even discuss Ron and Hermione with their plans. That had made it almost impossible for him to sneak away. He had, though, and hoped this would be worth it. While he wouldn’t have much time with Sirius, just talking to him would calm him down.
Hand on his pocket, making sure the Sneakoscope was there and not emitting any kind of sound, he continued on, still glancing over his shoulder. Though Bill had said it didn’t work, it did enough that he thought he could use it to keep track if anyone lurked around anywhere. Between it and keeping an eye out since it was fairly quiet out here, he thought he would do fine and Sirius would remain safe with their secret kept between them.
Once more that feeling prickled him, though harder than ever this time, so Harry stopped and looked around, shivering slightly. Something—he didn’t know what it was, but there was something very wrong and he didn’t want to stay out here in the open. In fact, the instinct to protect himself and find somewhere to hide began nudging him. Yeah, time to get to the cave.
Eyes all over, he finally spotted the cave entrance then headed straight for it. Once at the mouth, he put a hand over his pocket where the Sneakoscope was, not feeling any vibration or hearing any noise, then he glanced around. Not seeing anyone or anything, he stepped inside then grinned when he saw Sirius. Hugging his godfather, feeling Sirius’ strong arms wrap around him, he already felt better.
Draco ensured he stayed far enough back that Potter wouldn’t notice him unless he had some serious detection spells. Normally, he had Crabbe and Goyle with him to help watch, but they were doing the normal with the candy store and he couldn’t drag them away yet. Besides, this required serious stealth, something neither of them had.
As Potter moved, he slipped from tree to tree, staying hidden with the standard charms to help. While he was doing this to help himself, his father also asked him to send reports on anything Potter and his friends were up to. Though he didn’t say why, and Draco was highly curious about it, he didn’t ask either, assuming it had to do with a big plan of some kind. Either way, he would help. Plus, he never knew when he could use what he found out.
When Potter slipped into the cave, Draco slid in closer, plastering his back against the side of the cave as close to the entrance as he could, peering around the edge. And what he could see he could most assuredly use! Black was here as well with Potter meeting him. Oh yes, once they got back to the school, he would make sure the right people found out.
After breaking off the hug with Sirius, Harry couldn’t stop grinning. Though it didn’t solve all his problems, it sure helped him feel better. Just being around Sirius seemed to relieve some of the stress he was dealing with. Talking out the rest would aid in dealing with the other problems, at least for a time. Sirius could give him hints on how to work with the rest.
With a glance around the clean cave, Harry asked, “You’re sure we’re safe here? I know it’s quite a ways outside town, but you never know.”
“It’s safe,” Sirius assured him, leading Harry back towards the rear of the cave then conjured some comfortable chairs for them. “Not sure why, but this cave is one most around here avoid. Plenty talk about it being cursed, haunted, or something. Nonsense, of course, but it works for what we need.” He then glanced around and nodded. It had smooth walls, lots of room and didn’t have any hidden spots where anything could lurk. “We’ll be fine here for the time you have, not to worry. I can then Apparate out without anyone seeing me.”
“Good,” Harry nodded, taking a seat with a soft groan in one of the chairs. He then took a butterbeer Sirius pulled out of a small pack Sirius brought and started to relax. However, as he did, that feeling was back, stronger than ever. Brow furrowing again, straightening up, he looked outside the cave then asked Sirius, “You feeling anything off? Not sure how to describe it, but it’s setting off my danger signals in some way, like something is really wrong or there is something huge coming.”
Sirius stood then pulled his wand, brow furrowed as well. Concentrating, he could feel the hair on the back of his neck stand on end as well and didn’t know why. “Something is off,” he muttered then headed for the mouth of the cave, making damned sure his wand was ready.
Hand out to tell Harry to stay put, he poked his head out then saw Draco Malfoy standing there. Teeth grinding, he grabbed the brat by the back of his jacket, planning to wipe his memory then send him off so he couldn’t reveal anything. However, he stopped when he heard a sound almost like several large trains coming in their direction.
Head whipping to where it seemed like it was coming from, his eyes widened. Now not only did it sound like large trains, but with the rush of water added to it. That was because there was a massive wall of water coming in their direction. In fact, it had already engulfed Hogsmeade and was headed straight in their direction. It made no sense to him and stopped him cold.
Hogsmeade wasn’t on the coast, though close to it, so a wave like this didn’t seem possible. While he had heard of tsunamis before, he didn’t equate it with what he saw. However, he knew it prudent to do something before they were all killed.
Without thinking, he yanked Draco into the cave then shoved him towards the back, telling Harry to get back as far as he could. Then he sealed the mouth of the cave, though making it see through. As he panted heavily, he stepped back, eyes wide as the water he had seen in town was already starting to rush past the cave. In the mass of water, he could see not only trees and boulders, but pieces of buildings and people. Oh, this was very not good and he had no idea what caused it! The wall of water was so tall, he couldn’t see the top of it and it appeared like it covered the hill the cave was in completely.
Unbeknownst to the Wizarding World as a whole, the alarm went out to the Muggle world after a small volcanic island not far off the UK blew apart, sending half the mountain into the ocean. The piece which slid into the ocean not that far from the UK was roughly the dimension of good-sized mountain itself. Not only did the tsunami end up set off by the large quake which set the volcano off, but the debris from the mountain itself added to it, creating a mega-tsunami.
Since this wasn’t a volcano which so many thought was dangerous, it was largely unmonitored by so many, unlike the one in the Canary Islands, so it caught everyone by surprise. Though the southern part of the UK had some procedures for dealing with this, the northern part didn’t. This meant no one had any preparations in place, least of all the Wizarding World. No warning was given as the wave, over 35 meters high, rushed towards the coast. The Muggles were able to do some, but the Wizarding World, especially Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, were right in the path. There was nothing anyone could do. The castle could protect itself, but the rest was hit directly with nothing to protect the town.
Draco about protested the manhandling by Black until he glanced at the front of the cave, seeing the water rush by. Eyes wide, clutching his wand more out of reflex than anything else since he had no intention of using it, his mouth hung open. Oh bloody hell! Black had actually just saved his life and he didn’t know how to react to that.
Back against the wall at the rear of the cave, Harry watched the water rush by, shaking his head. This—oh Merlin! He honestly wasn’t sure what was happening. Of course, his mind skipped to what he learned in Muggle school about disasters, but couldn’t place how this happened. Nothing he knew would cause it.
After ensuring the spell he put up on the mouth of the cave would hold up against the tremendous pressure on it from the water, Sirius slowly began to back away from it, keeping an eye on the scene playing out. Chest heaving, he continued to walk backwards until he was next to Harry. Though he glanced at Draco, more to make sure he didn’t do anything stupid, his eyes drifted to the mouth of the cave again. “This isn’t good,” he then muttered. Looking up, he was pleased to see the cave seemed like it would hold up against the tremendous pressure put on it. The only thing he worried about now was ensuring they could get oxygen in until the water let up.
“No, it’s not,” Harry sighed, seeing some bodies float past. He winced when he realized they were in Hogwarts robes. “What happened?”
“I don’t know,” Sirius told him honestly with a shake of his head. He then glanced at Draco, who was white as a sheet then asked, “Did you see anything odd, Draco?” He would have to keep an eye on the brat until this ended, but they were stuck for now.
“Nothing odd,” Draco replied automatically, eyes locked on the opening at the front of the cave as the water rushed by.
Though Sirius nodded, he said nothing. Now he had to wonder how long this would last and deal with plenty else after, like making sure Draco didn’t remember seeing him. Wand pointing towards the ceiling, he cast several diagnostic spells on the cave to make damned sure it held up against the disaster. Thankfully, they all came back showing it would hold up. They also detected they had enough oxygen for several hours. Now they would just have to wait and see how long this would last before the water receded.
Once the alarm went up about the disaster, the castle locked down and did what it could to protect itself. The teachers began scrambling to shore up the castle so nothing ended up damaged and the students stayed safe. However, Albus did his best to get out of the castle and head to Hogsmeade where more than half of the students were. He couldn’t, though. The water was too high and moving too fast. After alerting the Ministry, who vowed to arrive as fast as they could, he watched and waited, heart sinking. Then he sent off for the teachers to make a list of their students who had gone to the village so they would know who to look for.
As he waited, all he could think about was Harry. He was in the village like the rest. Right now, there was nothing he could do. All he could do was hope people did what they could and protected themselves and his students the best they could. Harry was smart. If there was anyone who could protect himself, it was Harry. Though this situation wasn’t one they had encountered, he hoped they all would manage. If they were indoors, they could manage. Those who ran the businesses could put up protections so they could stay safe until help came.
Watching the water rush further onwards, past the town by now, he shook his shaggy head, looking sad. There would end up plenty to do. It was time to start contacting others who could come in to help them once the water receded. Then he would have the awful task of contacting parents whose children were in Hogsmeade at the time. No, it wouldn’t be fun, but it had to be done.
After turning from the window, he sighed then went to tend to matters and inspect the castle. Not sure how long before the water started to recede, he had to make sure the spells on the castle would keep the water out until then. And he planned to move the students to the upper levels just in case. It was best to prepare, after all, than end up caught off guard once more. So, yes, he had plenty to do and tend to before he could start to focus on Hogsmeade.
The atmosphere in the cave was uncomfortable for more reasons than the disaster. With the personalities involved, it wasn’t pleasant, though no one was poking anyone. It was just the idea Draco was there. Sirius and Harry both realized he didn’t follow Harry for no reason. This was something they would have to handle before they left, but would leave it for now.
As the water continued to rush by the mouth of the cave, the three settled at the back in chairs. Though Sirius brought only enough for food for him and Harry, he duplicated it and shared with Draco as well since they didn’t know how long they’d end up staying here. Minimal conversation took place while the three ate, most of it between him and Harry with Draco only saying one or two words if directly asked.
All of them kept their eyes on the mouth of the cave, hoping the water would stop then start to recede. Since none of them knew the cause of this disaster, they couldn’t calculate when it would end. Though not much conversation took place, most was related to the speculation of what happened. Plenty of theories were discussed, but until they got out and heard, they wouldn’t know.
Tense and quiet, they sat there, glancing at each other. Draco kept a wary eye on the two, mind all over about what could come while the other two kept an eye on him to ensure he didn’t do something foolish.
As time slipped by, Sirius and Harry began to discuss ways of getting out. The most common, Apparation, Sirius tried quickly, but for some reason couldn’t manage. Then he tried the Patronus to get a message out. It didn’t work either. He said he thought it might be because of the composition of the cave walls. Some elements made it harder. Though he sounded nonchalant about it, he couldn’t keep the worried look off his face. It was the first time all of them realized there was something off about this. However, rather than worry, they decided to wait for the water to recede to try.
Finally, as dusk started to fall, the water began to recede fairly quickly. Now prepared, the three stood and waited. Draco made sure to stay as far away from the two as he could. Of course, he was certain they would do something to him to ensure he said nothing, so he would try to get out before they could.
Sirius made sure he would Obliviate Draco before he left, but kept an eye on the water until that time came. Once the water was down to just a few centimeters on the ground, he planned to get them all out. The first thing he did was to take the barrier he put up down. However, it didn’t work. It wouldn’t release for some reason. Brow furrowed, he tried everything he could think of, but it didn’t work. Something wasn’t right here.
After exhausting everything he knew, he once more tried the Apparation. Again, it didn’t work. Then he tried making a Portkey, though it was illegal, and they all grabbed on. It didn’t work either. Going through the Patronus to other spells he knew which could get them out, he worked through everything he could think of. None of them worked. Finally through everything he could think of, as he panicked slightly, he sent the obviously worried teens to the back of the cave. If he couldn’t do it the normal way, he would blast the damned thing open. After putting shields around all of them to protect them from debris, he leveled his wand at the walls by the opening and let a blasting hex fly. It shot that way, but the walls seemed to absorb it with no effect on the rock. Panic growing, he tried more blasting hexes, each more powerful than the last. None of them worked, just being absorbed the way the others had. Yeah, not good at all.
When he decided there was nothing more that he could do, a slightly shaking Sirius stepped back, pale. “Nothing I know has worked.” He admitted to the two.
“Does that mean we’re stuck?” Draco asked, voice having risen in pitch to where it was an octave or so higher, panic evident in it.
“Until we can figure something out,” Sirius told him, putting a hand on the obviously slightly panicked Harry’s shoulder. “I don’t know why it didn’t work either. Let me get some readings to see what might be going on here then we’ll see what we can do. If it comes down to it, we’ll go about it the Muggle way and try to dig out.”
“This isn’t good,” Harry muttered, eyes darting all over, feeling slightly claustrophobic and like the walls of the cave were starting to close in on them.
“We’ll come up with something,” Sirius told him bracingly though wasn’t all that sure himself. Everything he did should have worked, at least a little. Why it didn’t was beyond him.
Almost hyperventilating, Draco pressed back against the wall of the cave, panicking. While he could breathe now, he knew if they didn’t get out, the air would end up gone. The mere thought was enough to cause major panic in him. “We have to do something,” he managed to stammer out, eyes darting everywhere.
“We will,” Sirius assured him, not liking the situation either, feeling some panic well up too, though he managed to keep it in check. Just as he was ready to turn around and take readings, he stiffened up at a scribbling sound. It was almost like the sound of writing on a chalkboard, though not exactly.
After spinning around, he stopped cold at a message that seemed to appear in chalk over the front wall of the cave to the right of the opening. It didn’t take long for it to fully appear.
‘Just relax and calm down. The Magical Cave of Fixing will right what is wrong and give you what you want. The less you fight, the quicker you’ll end up released. In the time it takes, you’ll be provided for completely with your heart’s desire. Time stands still in the cave as its Magic works. You will be fine. Enjoy your time here.’
Hearing Harry squeaking in a panicked way, Sirius put his hand on his godson’s shoulder, trying to keep it from trembling. Yeah, this wasn’t good and they were stuck. Now the almost complete panic began to take over for him as well. Stuck in here with just Harry wasn’t bad, but add in Draco and this was a nightmare in the making. How in the hell would they manage to get out of this one?
A.N.--Just a short note here. What I’ve used about the tsunami is real in a hypothetical scenario, the same with the link provided. However, I’ve played with it a tad to make it extreme and kick this off. While real in certain elements, it’s not accurate in the area of Scotland and a couple other parts mentioned. Just take it as artistic license and go from there.
