The morning was damp and foggy. The students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were either just waking up, or in some cases, still asleep. In one tower of the castle, a pair of bodies lay tangled in their bed, the early morning sun shining directly on the face of 16-year-old Jayden Potter. The young girl wrinkled her nose as the light shining on her face, attempting to roll over. Instead, all she can do is turn her head as a heavy arm is draped over her waist, and a heavy leg is tangled between hers. Jayden groans and attempts to bury her face in her pillow, but the sun is still streaming into their bedroom, and she can feel it on her face. The young witch decides then to try and move the limbs draped over her, with no success. Scowling, Jayden then begins to poke the person the limbs belong to, her mate, Ronon. For his part, Ronon was snoring on his pillow, until a well-placed poke from Jayden made him snuffle in his sleep, and crack an eye open. “Yes, you persistent pain in my arse?”
“I want to get up.” Followed by another series of pokes, one of which landed on Ronon’s nose.
“Jayde, darling, what time is it?”
“Uhhhh morning?”
“Early enough that we can get in at least another hour of sleep before your brother and friends decide to wake us up.” Ronon punctuated his statement by dragging Jayden farther into his embrace and moving his leg to wrap over both of hers. “Now lets at least pretend to sleep for another hour while cuddling under the blankets.”
“But Ro-” Jayden was cut off from whatever she was about to say by Ronon’s hand slapping over her mouth.
“Quiet Jayden Renee, I want another hour of sleep please. You slept well but I didn’t. Don’t you remember why I didn’t sleep well?” Jayden flushed when she remembered exactly why Ronon hadn’t slept well. She had spent most of the night being a teenager with her friends and brother. Which meant drinking in the living room of her and Ronon’s private quarters. After about two hours of dealing with the rowdy, rambunctious teenagers, Ronon had kicked everyone out in favor of putting Jayden to bed after she had passed out an hour prior.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll let you sleep.” Jayden settled back into her spot next to Ronon, and listened as he once again slipped off to sleep.
After the hour had passed, Ronon was awakened by the smaller body of his mate wiggling to get out of his grasp, and he could faintly hear knocking on the portrait that hid the entrance to their quarters. Groaning, he followed Jayden out of their bed, picking up the t-shirt he had discarded the night before when it became too warm to wear it to bed, and sliding it on over his head. Jayden was standing at the open portrait hole, standing aside to let Harry, Draco, Ginny, Ron, Hermione and Theo in. Ronon suppressed a slight growl, and meandered over to the small kitchenette to make a pot of coffee for the influx of people suddenly in his living room. Jayden had shut the door at this point, and made her way over to where Ronon was, and slipped around in front of him, wrapping her arms around his neck, and burying her face in his chest. “Thank you.” Ronon glanced down at Jayden, and kissed the top of her head, wrapping one arm around her shoulders to draw her closer.
“Anytime Precious.” He murmured; his lips pressed to the top of her head. Jayden turned around in Ronon’s embrace, and began to help Ronon make coffee.
“Hey Jayde, do you have milk and sugar?” Draco asked from his spot next to Theo on the couch.
“Yeah, we do, anyone else want milk and sugar for their coffee besides the Great Blonde Prat over there?” Jayden asked, sticking her tongue out at Draco as he squawked at the nickname. A chorus of ‘Yes’ and ‘Yeah’ were her answer, and after fixing coffee for Ronon and herself, Jayden put the milk and sugar on a tray, and sent it levitating out to the coffee table for everyone to use as well as the empty coffee cups. She carried the full carafe over, and set it next to the cups, inviting everyone to pour their own.
After everyone had a cup of coffee for themselves, Ronon began handing out Sober Up to the occupants of the room. It took about fifteen minutes for the potions to take effect, and another five for the coffee to hit their systems. During that time Ronon and Jayden had slipped back into their bedroom and gotten dressed. Since it was a Saturday morning, they had both chosen jeans and t-shirts, though Jayden’s jeans were a bit tighter than Ronon liked. Usually it would spark an argument, but that morning Ronon let it slide, since his mate was being super helpful and had let him get an extra hour of sleep. Vaulting over the bigger of the two couches, Ronon made himself comfortable which Jayden sent all the mugs to the sink to wash. Watching as everyone settled in, more awake and sober now, Ronon motioned for Jayden to come sit with him. Jayden smiled and sat down on the couch next to her mate, cuddling up against his side as they watched Harry, Ron and Draco debate who the better Professional Quidditch Team was. Jayden took a sip of her coffee and winced at how hot it was, reaching forward and setting it on the coffee table. Ronon looked over at her and raised an eyebrow, to which she answered, “Too hot.” Ronon nodded and lifted his wand from the side table, and brought it to the cup, tapping it to lower the temperature for her a bit. Jayden smiled in appreciation, and took another sip, sighing as the coffee was just right now. Putting his wand back, Ronon sipped from his own coffee, an arm around Jayden as the debate from the three boys on the other side of the room began to heat up, to the point where Ron and Draco were both red-faced and screaming at each other. “Oi Ferret, want to say that again?” Ron yelled and whipped out his wand, levelling it on the blond Slytherin, who stood up and drew his own wand, not one to shy away from a challenge.
Harry glanced between the two, and in the spirit of not destroying his sister’s living quarters, tried to separate the two with Theo’s help. It wasn’t much help unfortunately, and Ron fired off a nonverbal spell, the purple light bouncing off the shield Theo erected, and hurtling toward Jayden and Ronon.
Ronon saw the spell coming and quickly erected a shield, but also pushed Jayden behind him on the couch. After assuring him she was safe, Ronon let Jayden move, and quickly disarmed the two arguing boys, both who had watched the spell shoot toward Ronon and Jayden. “Mind telling me why you were about to have a duel in my living room?” Ronon asked casually, standing in front of the two, not letting Jayden off the couch, his body between her and any further danger.
“Malfoy started it. He-” Ron didn’t get much farther, Ronon raised a hand to stop him from finishing his sentence.
“I don’t care who started it. If you are going to argue and/or duel, you will not do it in my living room, where my mate was sitting ten feet away. Especially since I had to take care of all of you last night when you were too drunk to function.” Ronon ended his statement with a withering glare at everyone around except Jayden, who put a hand on his arm, to draw his attention to her.
“Darling I think they are sorry.”
“I don’t care. Unless they say they are sorry for endangering you in the space where you are supposed to be safe, I will continue to be extremely pissed off.” Ronon turned fully to face Jayden, dropping Ron and Draco’s wands onto the side table. He took Jayden’s face into his hands, staring in her eyes. “You are my mate, my everything, and reason for living. I would go to the ends of the earth for you. I would kill for you. Hell, I would die for you Jayden. You’ve known this for two years. You’ve had two years to learn what I will and won’t do when it comes to you, which there isn’t a lot I WON’T do to protect you.” By the time he was done his impassioned speech, Jayden was looking up at him with tears in her eyes. Ronon leaned forward and nuzzled his nose against Jayden’s, and it was then that Jayden noticed the tears in his eyes as well.
“Ronon.” Ronon looked over at Harry, who had moved to stand closer to the couple, and was awkwardly shuffling his feet. “I’m sorry you had to look after all of us last night, we acted like right fools. Thank you again.” Harry’s apology was echoed by Hermione and Theo, and then reluctantly by Ron and finally Draco, who stood up and crossed the room to stand next to Harry.
Ronon growled at the blond, who took a step back, and raised his hands in surrender. “Look mate,” Ronon growled again at that word, so Draco sighed and rolled his eyes skyward for a moment before continuing, “I’m sorry ok. I didn’t mean to get into an argument with Weasley and you know for a fact I would never hurt your mate. Shes my house-mate even if she lives with you now, and I consider her one of my best friends.” Draco took a small step forward and held out his hand to Ronon. “So, what do you say, all forgiven?” Ronon glanced at Harry, who shrugged, then Jayden who nodded, and finally Draco, before shaking the blond’s hand.
“Fine, but no more talk about Quidditch, find something neutral to talk about.” Ronon said, staring first at Ron, then Draco. The two nodded, and moved to sit back down, to which Ronon relaxed, and sat down, pulling Jayden into his lap. He moved her hair to one side, nosing along her neck, and inhaling her scent to calm himself down.
About two hours, and multiple debates later, the group made their way down to the Great Hall for lunch, Draco and Theo breaking off to go sit at the Slytherin table. Ronon guided Jayden to sit next to him at the Gryffindor table across from her brother, and began piling food on her plate, making sure that she had enough before he loaded his plate up as well. As soon as Jayden reached for the carafe of coffee on the table, Ronon cleared his throat. Jayden looked over to her mate, and raised an eyebrow at him. “Yes Ronon?”
“You had coffee already love. Try water or juice.” Ronon said, shaking his head.
“But Ro-”
“No buts Jayden, water or juice, you know as well as I do if you have more coffee you will end up either over tired later, or so hyper you won’t be able to study, and you know we always study on Saturdays.”
“Fine. Hermione can you please pass the water?” Jayden stuck her tongue out at Ronon, who pinched her thigh under the table, but then helped his mate pour them both some water before being dragged into a conversation with Seamus over one of their classes.
“Hey Jayden?” Jayden looked up and over at Ginny, who was looking at the two of them with a curiosity on her face.
“Yes Ginny?” Jayden had a feeling she knew what the question was, but she figured she’d indulge the younger girl.
“You never did tell us how you ended up mated to Ronon.” Ginny said, batting her eyes at Ronon a little. Jayden let out a small growl of her own to warn off the redhead, and took a sip of water before looking over at Ronon.
“You mind telling her, I only know what I was told by you love.” Jayden said to him, half-turning to face him. Ronon shook his head, and took Jayden’s hand.
“No, I don’t mind. It started when we were about fourteen.” With that Ronon launched into the tale of how he found out the Potter witch was his mate.
Flashback
Ronon had been told from a young age, first from his father, then by his brothers, that he would find his mate at age fourteen, by their scent. So, when he stepped on platform to head to Hogwarts to start his Fourth Year, and was hit with the most amazing scent in the world, to him at least, he knew he went to school with his mate, or at least one of their family members. He rushed through saying goodbye to his parents, and boarded the train with his brothers.
After the train had left the station, and the scent was still assaulting him, Ronon knew that his mate went to school with him, it was just a question of who. After he stored his trunk and owl in a compartment with his brothers and their mates, Ronon took off to follow the scent and see who his mate was. Walking through the first few train cars, the scent only grew stronger as he went, so Ronon kept going. The scent stopped at the compartment Harry and Ron were occupying at the moment, so Ronon slid the door open to talk to the two briefly. “Hey guys, where are the girls?”
“Trolley run, she skipped us unfortunately.” Ron answered, rolling his eyes. Since Ronon had to face Ron to hear him, Ronon learned that no one related to Ron was his mate, but the compartment did hold a strong concentration of the scent. Ronon then turned to Harry.
“Harry remember that conversation we had last year? About my mate?” At Harry’s nod, Ronon continued on. “Well, the scent is coming from here, and no its not you.” Ronon added in a hurry when he saw Harry open his mouth. “I believe it may be Jayden, so I am going to try and talk to her.” Ronon stood up to leave, and just as he was about to leave, the door opened, and he ran right into the person he was going to find. The scent washed over him, and Ronon inhaled deeply, aware that the sister of one of his best friends was his mate. Blinking a couple times to center himself, Ronon looked at the smaller witch, who was watching him curiously.
“Jayden, would you mind talking to me for a few?” Ronon asked gesturing to the compartment across the hall, which was surprisingly empty. Jayden nodded, and peeked into the compartment her brother was in.
“Here Harry, hold onto this. Don’t eat it all.” Jayden passed along the bag of treats she had gotten for them to her brother, who placed in on the seat next to him. Jayden turned to Ronon, and after his gesture, made her way across the hall to the empty compartment. When she walked past, Ronon took a deep breath, and groaned under his breath as the scent washed over him again.
Making sure Jayden was comfortable before he shut the door, Ronon turned to face the young witch. He took a breath, and sat down across from her, his forearms resting on his knees. “Jayden do you remember when you guys found out about my family and I?” Ronon asked, waiting for the witch to answer.
“Yes, and we told you we didn’t care.”
“Yes, and I’m thankful for that. But do you remember when Harry and I discussed me finding my mate this year?” Ronon proceeded, watching Jayden’s face.
“Yes, you said you’d know the minute you saw them. “Jayden answered, confusion on her face.
“Well, that’s part of it, the other part is they smell amazing to me. And when I got on the train, I smelt something amazing. I followed it to the compartment your brother and you were in. My mate was in there.” Jayden opened her mouth to say something, but Ronon held up his hand. “Jayden, your brother isn’t my mate.” It took a few seconds but Ronon could tell when Jayden figured it out.
“It’s me, isn’t it?” Jayden asked, her breathing speeding up a bit.
“Yeah Jayden, you’re my mate.” Ronon answered, relieved she had figured it out, but she was in the top ten of their class for a reason.
“Okay, so how do we do this? Do we just start dating like a normal couple or what?” Jayden asked, and Ronon laughed.
“Yes, we date like normal teenagers. I won’t feel anything too serious until I turn sixteen, which is when my wolf will want us to be closer and eventually well need our own quarters.” Ronon explained, watching as Jayden thought about it.
“Okay. I can’t argue with fate, can I? I mean if were honest I’ve always had a crush on you, so that works in our favor, right?”
“Yes, it does. Now can I be so forward as to kiss you right now?” Ronon asked, and at the witch’s enthusiastic nod, slid forward to reach her better. Jayden slid forward herself, watching Ronon closely. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to Jayden’s in a gentle kiss. Kissing Jayden felt like heaven for Ronon, her scent surrounded him, and her lips pressed against his. A small whimper rose from Jayden’s throat, and Ronon had to fight back a growl to not frighten the young girl.
End Flashback
“And that is how I told Jayden we were mates, and well look at us now.” Ronon finished linking his hand with Jayden’s, and kissing the back of it. The girls, mainly Ginny and Hermione, who had heard the story, sighed happily as Jayden rested her head on Ronon’s shoulder.
“Yup and I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Jayden said, grinning like a fool as they all moved to stand to continue on with their day.
