Harry gripped his wand of holly and phoenix feather wand core. 11" long; he tried to distract himself as he waited for the cannon to signal his turn to face a dragon.
A DRAGON! None believed he hadn't put his own name in the goblet of fire. Not even his best mate Ronald.
Hermione believed him... He thought, this wasn't a tournament. It was an execution.
He tried to push back the dark thoughts. He was going up against the opposition that was in their final years of schooling. Catch-up was a daunting task indeed.
Homework but also scrambling to learn as much magic as possible in such a short amount of time. That this was by the first task...
He rubbed his wand, which had begun to take on a more branch-like appearance from when he had first bought it. He was fond of this wizarding tool.
The one thing that hadn't abandoned him to this murder. The hype of the arena grew louder. He missed quidditch, of flying freely away from the problems of the world.
Away from his own problems. Alas, he could not fly by his own power, at least not yet he allowed himself a rueful smile.
Harry's emerald eyes hardened behind his glasses. He closed his heart.
Do or die.
That was the options offered to him by the wizarding world. Forced into a magical contract that would kill him if he tried to bow out.
It was a simple decision to make. Harry Potter had no intention of dying here.
He clutched his wand as silence was deafening from the former quidditch area. His time had come, and the horrid wait was not kind to him.
Harry felt himself sweating beneath his attire. One Unforgivable Curse that might be able to save him. The very same that took his parents from him. The one curse that marked his brow indelibly with a scar that never faded.
Tears ran down his face as Harry closed his heart to his own suffering. Do not go gentle into that goodnight! In the immortal words of that muggle poet.
The Hungarian Horntail was the most dangerous dragon in the world, and even Hagrid told him it was a nasty piece of work.
He took off his glasses and wiped his eyes. No one could be permitted to see the terrified kid. The Boy Who Lived.
He had faced the dark lord in one way or another every year for four years now. This reeked of that dark lord Voldemort.
Nothing to do but accept he'd never have a normal life for as long as he lived.
Indomitable.
Powerful.
No weakness could the public discern, or they'd turn on him for the one sin all those in the limelight bear. Any weakness was unforgivable to the public.
It was the nature of fame. He wasn't allowed to be a child. He had to be bigger, larger and better than life itself.
Only as big as his last success, only as weak as his last failure this was the nature of his life.
Ronald Weasley had no idea how truly alone you were when you were vaunted and placed upon a pillar above everyone else. Nobody smart wanted fame.
By definition, that made his best mate an idiot bordering on troll!
Naturally, he had to face the biggest, nastiest dragon around. He snapped his finger! Of course! He relaxed immediately; that was the secret!
Reframe it into something he did know and knew quite well! The Hungarian Horntail was really the dark lord Voldermort!
The jitters left him instantly. Now that!
Now That was something he could do for sure!!
A resounding explosion as the cannon went off. Harry reluctantly allowed himself the chance to smile.
He could do this! Harry girded himself and strode confidently into the arena.
Unassailable! He reminded himself in his mind as he felt the multitude of eyes upon him.
Unbreakable as the world, Unconquerable as the dawn itself!
He was announced, but Harry ignored it as the jeering of the people who disliked him filled his ears. He pushed it down. There would always be those who disliked him.
He wanted to cry, but he steadfastly refused them the pleasure of his tears. Harry had hoped the wizarding world would accept him; how naive of him.
He strode with purpose and cleared the boulders shielding him from the evilest black lizard he had ever had the misfortune of laying eyes on.
He kept his eyes straight ahead toward the golden egg that was the objective. Those baleful yellow eyes remained half open as the dragon barely deigned to consider him.
Like his detractors who looked down on him, Wheather, due to age or inexperience, they all would regret discounting him as a lucky bastard and nothing else.
They wanted him at his best?
Very Well.
All of you want to see what I'm truly capable of? The Hungarian Horntail whipped its tail around. The golden egg gleamed amidst the dull concrete-colored eggs as the spiked club-like tail gouged the rock.
It was just like the basilisk! Harry knew it could breathe fire up to fifty feet, and he was within that range. The female dragon wasn't even paying him much mind. At least until he drew closer to the next.
Underestimate him to your own peril! Harry drew himself up to his full height and bowed as respectfully as he could.
A duel that was either going to be quick or a prolonged one. One or the other with no in-between!
Harry raised his wand. "Accio!" He focused on the one thing that would silence all the naysayers about his worthiness. Within his mind, clear the one object that could silence them all and if he was worthy of it.
"Accio Sorting Hat!" He stated clearly and with purpose. For he knew it was within the headmaster's office.
For a moment, nothing happened, and jeering began as the moments drew by as he held his hand out expectantly. Serene as he could.
Sudden silence as he felt the hat land in his outstretched expectant hand. Now or never! If he was truly worthy and in need.
As he plunged his hand into the sorting hat. Silence descended as shining silver glistened in the sunlight as the rubies upon it glittered as if aflame.
He sat the sorting hat down respectfully, the vaunted Sword of Gryffindor in one hand and his wand in the other.
He was worthy of it! He would not besmirch the honor of Godric Gryffindor, the Founder of his house, and the ideals upon which all Gryffindors exemplified.
Harry's heart soared; let none doubt him ever again!
He took a step proudly. That great black-scaled lizard now had its gaze fixed firmly upon the slender resplendent blade that had slain a basilisk.
Stone cracked from its tail, slamming down. Now it noticed him; now it took his measure cautiously. It's fixed firmly upon that blade.
Face him and bleed or give up that golden egg, entirely upon the sudden aggressive dragon. It drew itself up to its full height, and the next couple of heartbeats would determine how this would end!
Harry flicked his wand suddenly, "Accio!" Pointing at the egg, he was quite sure he'd made his point.
The Horntail shrieked in outrage as it flared its wings protectively over its nest and the faintest bulge as the egg impacted it and landed harmlessly back into the nest.
Its draconic jaws opened wide. "Protego Maxima!" A bubble of protection as Harry went straight for the strongest variation of the shield charm he managed to find during his frantic research.
Dragon fire splashed over the bubble surrounding him as the rock all around him grew red hot and began to melt.
Harry ignored the sudden silence as he focused all his attention on the duel at hand. A tale as old as humanity itself. Man versus Dragon.
His shield charm weathered the onrushing onslaught of dragon flame. He waited for the first sign of its weakening.
He spun backward as he allowed the shield to collapse, and the sound of the audience resounded suddenly in his ears. Screaming and shrieks of horror.
"Diffindo!" Harry sliced forward, and the stream diverted to either side of him as the severing charm sailed and struck the snout of the Horntail with no effect.
Harry was already moving as he aimed the sword with one hand. "Depulso!"
The banishing charm blasted the sword into a shining, glittering missile.
A sudden metallic twang as the Horntail's tail deflected it. As the sword sailed out of sight and with it, any hope for a quick victory.
Harry charged towards the nest amidst the wicked flames. The dragon vanished from his sight among the sudden gout of fire issued forth from its jaws.
Harry had hoped, but alas the hard way seemed to be the only way his life seemed to be heading. He'd worry about his misfortune later!
"Protego Maxima!" He shouted as he could feel his boots singe and begin to char from contact with the red hot melting stone.
A yowling screeching scream as the black dragon appeared and batted him away from her nest with its potent strength.
The shield struck the supports of the central, and he allowed it to collapse as he jumped back into the arena.
"Arresto Momentum"
The screams of those in the stands grew as he landed softly back on the challenge grounds.
Harry rolled to his feet as a boulder sailed through the flames. He deftly pointed and, with a terrific crescendoing explosion.
"Bombarda Maxima!" Harry didn't even flinch as, with a white flash, the boulder exploded to bits that peppered the area all around him.
Neither, it seemed, was willing to concede. Harry stretched for a moment. He needed to be faster, or he needed to tire out the mean-spirited lizard.
"Accio!"
He again pointed at the golden egg, and with an indignant screech like a pissed-off cat, its talon snatched its serpent quick from his spell.
He sighed for a moment. The Hungarian Horntail was persistent, if nothing else, as it glowered at him with almost tangible malice.
He held its gaze for a moment. "Lumos Maxima!"
Harry charged across the smoking battlefield as from his wand tip came a blinding flash. The yowling screeching scream returned louder and closer as he bolted with as much blithely seeker spirit as he could muster.
The afterimages of that flash lingered in his vision as he scrunched his eyes closed as he got closer.
And then he heard whistling. "Protego-" A tremendous force collided with his shield, and suddenly, he was flying.
His vision dimly returned as suddenly he was rocketing upwards from the fantastic collision with what he assumed was that deplorable spiked tail.
Half-blind, he scratched the M. "Arresto Momentum" He furiously blinked the afterimages away as his ascent stopped, and he was held above the stadium of his own volition by his quick spellwork.
He needed to be faster! He realized faster, much faster still!
Harry plummeted, "Accio!" He bellowed and held his firebolt firmly in his mind.
The stadium grew larger as his fall picked up speed, and the ground began to, and a dark spot raced towards him. He clutched it last second and pulled it between his legs.
Harry pulled up from the arena, jutting up to greet him with broken bones, and he sped right back into the sky, rolling to avoid a line of flame.
Harry felt the chuckle rip from him. He wasn't done! Not by a long shot!
Now he had speed! As the dragon roared in consummate challenging response.
He swerved and swirled, dancing in the sky as he outraced the gouts of flame. Neither the dragon nor its weaponized breath was nowhere as fast as bludgers.
Nowhere close to being fast enough as the great magical predator kept its attention firmly upon him with a zeal born of annoyance and frustration.
First time for anything! To use both magic and flying. He didn't think either of them would settle for half-measures all or nothing.
It was time for him to go on the offense. He pursed his lips; it seemed that his guess that only the strongest spells had the chance of making a noticeable impact was correct.
Again!
He used the summoning charm, and a silvery blur rocketed toward him as he caught it and jumped off his broom.
He flung the sword at his potent foe as he dropped. "Flipendo Maxima!" The strongest variant of the knockback jinx connected as it spun.
With a metallic thrum, the sword of Godric Gryffindor vanished into a resounding chime as it became a blur of shining silver and firey ruby light.
Harry summoned his broom to him and sped after it. The dragon suddenly yowled as the sword connected suddenly sheared through one of its horns as it stabbed into the ground and embedded itself into solid rock.
"Protego Maxima" Already on his lips as he approached, and the protection spell was already snuggly wrapped around him as his hand outstretched towards the nest.
Harry was suddenly batted away furiously as his broom vanished beneath him. This Hungarian Horntail was proficient with its tail!
Its villainous spines skated without purchase across its surface as he sped jarringly away. Launched by the impressive draconic power.
The glint of gold heralded the loudest screech of rage he'd ever heard.
He dropped the summons as he switched targets, and his prize slingshot towards the castle.
He had to procure the egg! It was a distant thought, though, as a dark shadow sped towards him with outstretched jaws. The chains that should've restrained the enraged hadn't...
Sabotaged! He realized with mounting horror as the Horntail had murder in its eyes.
It took a heartbeat to commit that the dragon was just straight up going to murder him. He could see it blazing in her hateful slit eyes.
It wasn't even about the egg anymore. He saw clearly in her eyes the same body language of that great serpent.
Malice. The conscious choice of cruelty
Her Jaws loomed wide.
"Glacius Maxima!"
His breath turned white as the temperature around him plummeted painfully cold as a gale of utter cold erupted from his wand.
Artic? he wondered. No, nowhere near cold enough as antarctic freeze unleashed from his wand that he held on to for dear life.
As the cold from the bottom of the world flowed issued freely from this wand tip as hit that opened maw with absolute surprise even as his shield charm collapsed.
The Horntail swerved out and hit the tree line. Harry barely managed to do the motion for the slowing charm as he smacked into a tree solidly.
Harry groaned as the world went blurry. His glasses had been knocked off.
He lay where he smacked into the tree as he summoned his glasses with the summoning charm.
He hurriedly placed them back on as the world returned back into focus. He ached as he found his broom in the boughs nearby and hesitantly got atop it as he flew as quickly as he dared.
Another heavy hit like that would finish him as he sped towards Hogwarts, picking up speed as he looked around for the glint of gold. He darted to and for, looking for that blasted golden egg.
He just wanted the task over with, and then he spied the golden egg in the courtyard.
He aimed his summoning charm as it came to him, and then it tumbled as it suddenly lurched as someone else attempted to take it from him.
Harry sped to catch it as he lept. The slowing charm allowed him to roll safely as he clutched it safely as he got to his feet. His firebolt drifted down to the courtyard.
His green eyes darted around for whoever dared to try. Audacity was what it was.
He saw no one and sighed; he admitted he did; it was kinda cool. Not that they tried but that they got away so cleanly.
Hated them, whoever it was, but he did have to admit it had style.
Harry stepped cautiously closer to his broom. A shadow flitted over him, and his shield charm wrapped around him. Stones bounced off his protective spell.
The courtyard shuddered as something massive landed, crumpling the entryway as black scales.
"Persistent aren't you?" Harry asked as the Hungarian Horntail reared up. "Pity then, So am I." Harry quipped as his thief's friend charm forced the great hall doors open.
The movement caused the enraged dragon to gaze in the direction of the doors for a moment.
Before her terrible yellow eyes alighted on Harry, clutching the golden egg.
Those slit pupils shrank; Harry allowed his shield to dissipate as he bolted towards the great hall.
The sounds of his footfalls resounded loudly, and then the yowling keening screech rebounded as the Horntail gave chase and smashed her way through into the great hall.
Harry was not going to give up the egg! As the doors splintered off their hinges.
"Flipendo Maxima!"
The strongest variant of the knockback jinx struck her, and she screamed as she smashed into a column.
He clutched his egg. His emerald eyes darted around for a moment as flame poured into the great hall.
The Hungarian Horntail's wrath, pitiless and sure as Harry danced away.
"Bombarda Maxima!" He pointed at the vast windows, and with a deafening explosion, The glass exploded outward in a great white flash.
He sidestepped as that great horned tail smashed down where he'd been just before.
Harry flicked his holly wand around in a wide arc. "Oppungo!"
The dragon shrieked as she was suddenly pelted with tables as Harry dashed towards the massive hole he'd made.
He sailed past the podium that sailed past him and struck the dragon in the face as he clutched the golden egg tightly.
Harry twisted around as he lept out the window. "Ascendio!"
He jolted upwards to land on the roof as he rolled into a run. The sound of a supremely pissed-off dragon barely managed to overtake the sound of his furious heartbeat in his ears.
His wand flashed as The Hungarian Horntail clawed her way atop the roof. Harry jumped and landed astride his trusty firebolt as his summoning charm went perfectly.
Harry accelerated as fast as the firebolt allowed. Orange lighted heat followed, and then he pulled up into the clouds.
The Horntail managing to not just pursue but gain on him. Even Harry had to admit to respect the great creature as he buzzed, spun, and twirled, barely managing to keep ahead of the dragon.
Harry dove down towards the arena, followed by a pillar of flame. As he swerved as he chucked the golden egg back into the arena like a quaffle as he abruptly gripped his broomstick and pulled up.
Harry was bruised and battered but still defiant of defeat. That shining silver and rubies were nowhere to be seen as the Horntail smashed into the side of the arena.
Harry got atop his broom and kicked down as the broom bucked him at the already recovering dragon.
His wand slung in a wide arc as everything seemed to slow to a crawl.
The Hungarian Horntail's jaws began to open.
One last spell.
All of it hinged upon this chance. This one small window of opportunity.
The arena darkened as a ghoulish green glow emanated from his wand's tip.
The curse that murdered his parents.
The curse that marked him by a monster.
DIE!
Harry thought tiredly.
The brightest green light shone star bright. Brightening the arena and casting all in green.
As the world vanished in a blinding emerald glow, the unsettling presence of some vast, incomprehensible thing sped forwards.
A line of green light thundered out of his wand.
"Avada Kedavra!" Harry Potter roared loudly to the heavens as the first hints of flame appeared in its throat.
The Killing Curse connected with the back of the dragon's throat with a blinding flash.
Harry suddenly hit the ground harder than he'd ever before.
There was no applause, no screaming in the wake of that killing curse.
Just silence as the world began to fade.
