After Harry's name had come out of the Goblet of Fire, Hermione knew that her friend's life was in danger once again and that she had to do something to help him
The rest of the school had shunned him and even Ron had turned his back on Harry in a fit of blind jealousy. She was the only person Harry had left into his corner and the only one who could help him get out of this situation.
It was evident that someone was out to get him, therefore it was necessary that Harry became equal to the other Champions because the challenges of the Triwizard Tournament were tailored to be deadly for NEWT level wizards and witches. These people had three years of magical education over Harry. It wasn't possible to close that gap in a few weeks, even for a speedreader bookworm like Hermione, much less Harry.
But that didn't mean she wasn't going to look for a solution either way. Without knowing what the first challenge would be, Hermione threw herself headfirst into the library, but of course she found nothing immediately helpful in the ordinary section, which left her no other recourse than to delve in the forbidden section. He had to "borrow" Harry's cloak to get there, but she managed to sneak inside quite easily with it.
Naturally that was only half the journey. She still had to find something that could actually help, and it wasn't precisely an easy task to do at night while watching her back from being found by the librarian and without accidentally getting cursed by a book.
Eventually, after several nights she came across a book that caught her attention. "De Obscura Potionibus" or The Darkest Potions. It reminded her of a book with a similar name from which she took the recipe for the Polyjuice potion which they used in second year. She decided that it was worth a better look and took it back with her to her dormitory where she could read through it in peace.
She went through it all before dawn. There were some extremely dark and foul potions listed there, some of which made her pull back in disgust at the description of their effects. However, there was one potion that she found exceptionally interesting though. The Potion of Mental Acuity. According to its description, while under the effect of the potion the mind of the user would be totally open and they would be capable of perfectly memorizing anything and everything they were told or read. That sounded exceptionally useful and Hermione couldn't understand why the students wouldn't make use of it on a regular basis, but the list of side effects cleared that right up.
First of all, the user would not be able to differentiate right from wrong. They would accept everything they learned as an absolute truth and no amount of evidence would change their mind on the topic.
Secondly, it caused mild addiction but protracted use actually damaged the mind in the long term, effectively making the user dumber over time. That was in the course of several months and with constant use, but with the addiction it caused it was extremely likely that anyone who took it would abuse it.
To make matters worse, it was made with extremely common ingredients that she wouldn't have any problem finding in a potion cupboard, which meant that once the recipe was leaked, it was impossible to prevent it from being brewed.
The only saving grace was that it was extremely hard to brew as it required an extreme level of precision. If one was even a single second late into adding an ingredient or if they stirred even half a turn more than needed, it would result in an ineffective goop or would straight up blow up in their faces.
"What should I do?"
The potion was clearly extremely dangerous but it was exactly what Harry needed to be ready for the tournament. Would he be willing to take it?
"Of course, I will have to make sure everything he learns is accurate, but that should be easy. I have my books. Of course, I can never tell him the recipe or he might try to brew it himself behind my back."
As long as he used the potion in moderation and she was careful with what he learned, there woudl be no problems.
"Well, before that I need to see if I can actually brew it. I wouldn't want another fiasco like in second year."
Having made up her mind, Hermione waited for the next night before sneaking out of the common room and venturing into an unused potion classroom. She couldn't brew this potion in a bathroom like the previous time. It was far too complex to attempt it anywhere but a fully equipped laboratory. Since this was in the dungeons, she risked that Snape would come around during a patrol, but she put on a proximity ward she had learned about in a sixth year textbook. She would immediately be alerted if anyone approached.
"Alright, let's get to it."Having taken all the safety precautions she could, Hermione started to work, following the recipe step by step. The process was quite long, requiring well over two hours to get to the most delicate part. Unfortunately, it was late at night and doing sensitive work while sleep deprived was a very bad move. She made a series of tiny mistakes which she failed to notice. The flame was a bit higher than necessary and she stirred the concoction more than needed. Therein lay the true danger of this potion. Unless one was spectacularly incompetent, it was entirely possible to reach the final steps without noticing anything was wrong.
Hermione put in the last of the ingredients, and stirred the exact number of times the recipe instructed to.
There was no build up of any sort, no violent boil of any kind. The cauldron just exploded, knocking Hermione on her back and filling the room with sickly sweet fumes.
"Cough! Cough!"Her eyes stung and her lungs burned. Moreover her ears were ringing from the sound of the explosion. She tried and managed to get back on her feet but she was extremely disoriented and the smoke wasn't helping clearing her head at all.
"I need to... cough... I need to..."She needed to do something. There was a sense of urgency about it too but her head was spinning and the smoke was making it hard to think clearly. The more she breathed it, the more the feeling of urgency started to fade. She couldn't recall what she was supposed to do, or what she was trying to do. Or anything at all.
She stood there, relaxed and dazed, her eyes half lidded, breathing more and more of the fumes.
It was at that moment that she heard the distinct sound of footsteps approaching from the corridor.
It was at that moment that she heard the distinct sound of footsteps approaching from the corridor.
Severus Snape, the potion teacher entered the room and cleared the smoke from the potion with a wave of his wand, but Hermione had inhaled too much of it and was under its effects completely.
"What is going on here?" he asked.
In her dazed state of mind, Hermione could only reply honestly.
Snape's eyes widened as he realized just what the young witch had done. Her mind was now completely open and pliant to suggestions. Anything he would tell her in this state she would believe even if it went against everything she knew.
He stared at the girl from head to toe, thinking about how he could exploit this to his advantage. He hated this uppity girl who never learned her place, and her friendship with Harry Potter only added fuel to his resentment.
"Miss Granger, can you hear me?" he asked.
"Yes, I can hear you," the girl replied.
"Do you know who I am?"
"You are Severus Snape, the potions teacher," she answered.
Her voice was devoid of emotion and inflection, a clear sign that she was under the effects of the potion.
"Are you a muggleborn, Miss Granger?"
"Yes, I am," Hermione replied.
"Would you like to be a pureblood?"
"I do not care about blood status," she said.
He pondered for a second and then decided to make his move.
"You do care about blood status," he corrected.
Her mind, under the effects of the potion, could only accept this as the complete truth.
"I care about blood status," she repeated back.
"You know that being a muggleborn makes you inferior to your pureblood peers."
"I am inferior to my pureblood peers," Hermione replied.
"And this is the real reason why you brewed this potion. To catch up with them. Not to help your friend Harry Potter."
Once again, the potion made her believe those words as the absolute truth, and she repeated them back to him.
"I brewed this potion to catch up with my pureblood peers. Not to help Harry."
Severus felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He had just the right tool for his revenge.
"For that purpose, you intend to keep brewing this potion. Every fortnight for the rest of the school year, in exactly the same way you did today. You made no mistake and thus you will not change a single thing."
"I will keep brewing this potion every fortnight for the rest of the school year, in exactly the same way I did today. I didn't make any mistakes, so I won't change a thing."
"You will not tell anyone what you are doing. If anyone asks, you will simply say that you are trying to boost your grades."
"I will not tell anyone what I am doing. If anyone asks, I will simply say that I am trying to boost my grades," she repeated.
Snape had seen enough and he knew that soon the effects of the potion would fade. Without another word he left the room, and let Hermione return to her senses.
Hermione was standing there, staring into the air, a few moments later she came back to her senses. She didn't feel any different and she couldn't recall anything that had just happened.
"I need to get back to my bed. It is too late to be down here."
Hermione gathered her things and returned to the dorm. The next day she didn't remember any of the night before. She felt slightly groggy and tired, but nothing else.
"I wonder why the cauldron exploded," she wondered as she retired for the night. Still, she had to keep trying. She had a very good reason to succeed, after all.
"I can't fall behind the purebloods, even if they are so much better than me."
She fell asleep without doubting anything that happened, not even a little bit.
