Hermione strode across the lawn, the parchment held tightly in her hand. Ahead of her, Hogwarts castle soared, and as she passed through the clock-tower courtyard, she glanced down the letter one last time.
‘Dear Miss Granger.
I was pleasantly surprised to receive your owl. Should you wish a meeting with myself or any other member of the faculty, kindly visit the school on August 1st. Mr. Filch will greet you at the gate. Pepper Imps.
Yours Sincerely,
Professor M. McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.’
It was now August the first. And, sure enough, as she crossed the yard, the grim figure of the caretaker emerged from the shadow of the great doorway. And as she neared, she saw that, quite uncharacteristically of the man, he was smiling.
“Well, well, well, look who it is,” Filch leered.
“Good morning, Mr. Filch. I have come to see Professor McGonagall.”
“Have you, now?”
“Here,” she hastily fumbled to present her parchment. If past experience counted for anything, she suspected the bleak caretaker would find any excuse he could think of to make her life awkward.
But to her surprise, he refused the parchment.
“There’s no need for that,” he said, opening the door. “Professor McGonagall told me all about your special… arrangement.”
“Arrangement?”
“Your arranged meeting.”
“Well… yes,” Hermione frowned, following him into the entrance hall.
It had been three months since the battle of Hogwarts, three months since Hermione had set foot inside the castle, yet still she couldn’t supress a smile as she looked upon it once more. Magic really was a wonderful thing, for despite the damage done during the battle, the school interior looked almost as good as new.
“This way,” Filch sneered.
“Thank you, Mr. Filch, but I think I can find my own way to Professor McGonagall’s office.”
The caretaker scrutinised her for a second before acknowledging her request, stepping aside to let her past. “I hope your meeting goes well.”
Hermione thanked him, but could shake the feeling she was missing something. All the pupils knew Filch to be a cruel and cantankerous being, devoid of reason and compassion. Yet he had smiled. And used manners. Something didn’t add up.
The puzzling behaviour of the caretaker remained on her mind as she made her way up the grand staircase. It was strange, the castle being so empty. Usually, the great chamber was filled with the clamour of pupils racing between lessons. It was almost eerie.
She left the staircase on the second floor and made her way down the series of corridors she knew led to the headmistress’s office. Standing before the statue of a gargoyle, she once more consulted the parchment.
“Pepper Imps!” she said.
The statue leapt aside, revealing a tight, spiral staircase. At the top, she was faced with a tall, wooden door. She knocked.
“Enter,” came the familiar voice of her old transfiguration teacher. “Ah, Miss Granger,” said Professor McGonagall. “It’s good to see you again. Please, take a seat.”
“Thank you.”
“You mentioned in your lesson you were interested in pursuing your studies. What exactly is it I can do for you?”
“Well, you see,” Hermione began. She’d rehearsed this in her head. She didn’t want to leave anything out. “Now I’ve left school, I’m looking at prospective careers, and I see myself being able to really make a difference at the Ministry of Magic. They’ve gone through a lot of turmoil over the last few years, and I feel I can make my mark on reinstating its place in the wizarding world, and ultimately making our world a better place.”
“I could think of nothing better for you,” McGonagall said.
“But in order to be considered for a position at the ministry, I would need to repeat my final year at Hogwarts in order to gain the necessary qualifications.”
Hermione waited as McGonagall considered the request.
“This is not something we typically allow, Miss Granger.”
“I know, but in light of the special circumstances last year, I thought you might make an exception. We did have good reason for our absence last year, after all.”
“I think it’s a great shame that your aspirations have been set back by such events. Should your proven work ethic and commitment endure, then it would be my pleasure to grant you your request.”
“Oh, thank you!” Hermione beamed.
“But be warned, Miss Granger. You are of age, now, and that adds a different… dynamic to your tutelage. The new conditions to your education might not be those of which you are accustomed.”
“Professor? What new conditions?”
“I think it’s best you find that out for yourself. Suffice to say you might see a different side to your teachers going forward.”
“I would not be here asking this request of you, Professor, if I did not think I could handle change and challenge.”
“Very well,” McGonagall said, and her lips made the tiniest smile. “Do you need a book list?”
“Erm, no, I already have everything I’ll need.”
“In that case, that is all for now. You may see yourself out. I look forward to seeing you on the first of September.”
