Prologue
A Rock, A Hard Place
The waters were crystal clear until they were further away then they turned a brilliant blue. Whitecaps rolled ashore but Helen didn’t have eyes for them, or the white sand beach she was laying on. Her eyes were closed, and she was enjoying the sun touching her skin. Her dad had given her a salve to protect her skin, but she had thrown it away. After three days of laying on the beach she was still English white. Instead, she had bought a tanning cream at an apothecary and was now looking like a lovely cookie with red icing… and she was starting to think she may have to get up and eat lunch. Not that she wanted to leave her towel.
She finally pushed herself up and headed for the smell that was inspiring her thoughts. Of all the fights she had had with her dad this week, the one over her bikini was probably the loudest but it was all okay now. She wasn’t talking to him. She took a table and settled for lunch alone. If he wanted to be an ass because she wanted to eat plenty of luau food and spam so, be it. It was a stupid argument and she had plans on making him pay for it. But at the moment she was bellied up to the table with a plate filled with the most delectable of Hawaiian food and she didn’t have to deal with Captain Snarky Pants.
When she finished her lunch, she headed back to the beach. They had three more days until they returned to England, and they started in on life. She was starting to wonder if her dad planned on spending the rest of their second week pouting in his hotel room, or if he was going to apologize and take her to all the historic sites they had planned to see. If he didn’t, tomorrow she would head to Pearl Harbor on her own. The thought had just finished when a wave washed over her. She looked up and saw the surf had picked up. If there was ever a sign that the world wanted her to move... At the very least to the leeward side of the island. She rolled her eyes and headed for the hotel. At the very least she could bask in the sun there. Maybe she could even have a tropical drink… minus the alcohol.
She looked up at the hotel and spotted the black bat himself sitting on his balcony. She really wished he would just make it right and allow them to get back to the fun they were having. What was so wrong with her enjoying the vacation he had planned to the fullest? It would pass, this wasn’t their first fight, and it wouldn’t be their last. Part of being a family was the rocky times. But for once she was going to make him come to her. It was time for Severus Snape to learn to be a bigger person.
If they weren’t in France this would have been harder. If Narcissa and Draco had been here he would have wanted to stop and talk, spend time with the family he missed, be a family for a night. The room was thick with dust and cobwebs, it hadn’t been used since the Dark Lord was last active. He counted the flagstones as he walked into the room, twenty-three in and six to the left. He pulled the flagstone and grabbed the bundle from the hole. It was filthy and he was loathed to hold it, but he had no choice. These were his orders.
If it wasn’t for the Dark Lord, this room would still be a lavish private salon for the master’s use. But Lucius had sold the contents of this room and many others to fund the madman’s crusade. Once he fell Lucius had invested heavily to rebuild his coffers, but his divorce had hit those hard and continued to spill money from them, just as he and Severus had planned. Seventy five percent of his income went to Narcissa and Draco and was kept out of the hands of the Death Eaters. It had affected his standing, but that didn’t matter. He was protecting his family. He was even protecting them now.
He hated handling this thing, something about it felt evil. He couldn’t detect curses and dark magic, but it still felt dirty. He left the manor and apparated to his townhouse. He couldn’t wait to get rid of this thing. He just had to find someone to carry the book inside the school. Someone they would trust and someone that wouldn’t notice an extra book. He really wished Severus was here to advise him, but he still wasn’t. It didn’t matter, he would do as ordered and when Severus returned, he would inform him of his summons. Until then he could do nothing else.
