Dear Harry,
Can you please meet me in London for lunch next week? We can finalize everything then. As I have said before, I’m sorry. I hope to see you then. Please let me know if you can make it.
Melissa
Harry scavenged his desk for a piece of parchment and hastily scribbled a reply.
Mel,
I’ll be at Charlie’s Pub next Friday at 12:30.
Harry
Harry stuffed the note in an envelope and put it in his pocket. His eyes started to burn from the tears wanting so bad to escape. It was so painful. The tears flowed freely as Harry let his emotions roll out. He hadn’t seen his wife in almost a year. He knew that it was over but was not ready to face the ultimate finality. He didn’t know how he could face her… how he could face the past.
He angrily wiped his eyes and grabbed his bag. After straightening out his robes, he apparated to his office at the Department of Internnal nal Wizardry in New York City.
Harry stared at the pile of paperwork on his desk. His heart just was not in it today. He set his bag down and grabbed a small jar out of his desk drawer. He walked to the abandoned wing on the fourth floor and found a small fireplace. “Incendio!” He tossed a little bit of the powder and said “Ron Weasley,” into the flames.
Suddenly, Harry saw a red-haired, freckled gentlemen sitting at a desk. He startled at the sight of his friend in the flames. “Oi, Harry! How are you?” Ron asked as he got up from his chair and came closer to the fire.
“Could be better. But how are you? How’s the baby?”
Ron glowed proudly, “She’s wonderful, mate. She looks just like her Mum!”
“I can’t wait to meet her.” Harry said smiling.
“So, when are you coming back? I know your assignment was only temporary.”
Harry’s face fell. “Well. I’ll be coming next week to meet with Melissa, but I will only be there a few days.”
“What does she want?” Ron sneered at the sound of Harry’s wife’s name.
“Finalization,” Harry said calmly.
“Oh, Harry, I’m sorry.”
Harry shook his head lightly. “It’s all right. I knew it would come sooner or later. I just never wanted to accept it.”
“Where you gonna stay?”
Harry looked up at Ron, pleadingly. “I was hoping I could stay with you and Hermione.”
“Sorry, mate. ‘Mione’s mum is staying with us. Helping with the baby, you know,” Ron stammered slightly. “But… I know that Ginny has a spare room. She’d probably like the company since Colin, you know…” Ron’s voice faded.
“How is Ginny? After Colin’s funeral and me and Mel’s breakup… I wrote her, but she fell behind. I haven’t heard from her in over six months.”
“She’s living. But that’s not saying much. Maddy says she doesn’t sleep. She’s depressed. Harry, I’ve never seen her like this. When she comes to the house she smiles and says everything is all right, but you know she’s lying. She is Mum’s daughter, after all, her bloody arm could be falling off, but then swears she’s fine,” Ron shook his head slightly before continuing. “I think the only reason she comes to family dinner is for the girls. She mopes around out back most of the time. She won’t talk to anyone about it.” Ron’s eyes were started to turn red.
“How are the girls handling it?”
“Maddy has become very mature for an eight-year-old. And, Annie is still too young to really understand. She was barely three when Colin was… killed,” Ron had to fight to get the last word out.
“Would Ginny really be up to having a houseguest?” Harry asked, trying to change the somber subject to something more ambiguous.
“Harry, c’mon. You are one of her best friends. I’m sure she’d love to have you. Not to mention the girls. Let me talk to her and I’ll get back with you later today.”
“All right. I’ll talk to you then.”
“All right, Harry. Bye,” Ron said as Harry removed his head from the fireplace.
Harry slowly walked back toward his office, stopping by the International Owlery on the way. He pulled the letter out of his pocket. Can I really do this? It’s only lunch with her. I’ll only be there a few days. I’ll only have to see her once. I’ll be staying with Ginny and the girls. I’ll get to see Ron and Hermione. It’s only lunch with her. I can do this. I can do this. He tied the letter to a large owl. “I can do this,” he said to himself as the bird flew away.

Harry slowly walked down the stone path. He nervously ran his fingers through his unruly hair and then pu his his glasses up his nose. Ascending the stairs, he took a deep breath.
Knock, knock, knock.
The door opened. “Harry!” was all he heard before a mass of red hair had her arms wrapped around him.
“Hi, Gin.”
“I’m sorry, Harry. I am just so glad to see you. I missed you.” Ginny was still squeezing him tightly.
He rested his chin on her head, “I missed you too.” At this, Ginny pulled away to lead him into the house.
Ginny had changed a little since they were at Hogwarts. The fact of having two children had rounded her curves a little more and filled her out, but Harry still thought she was extremely attractive. Her red hair was still a stark contrast to her pale skin and freckles. But, her brown eyes weren’t as sparkly as they used to be and looked sunken in due the dark circles under them.
Ginny urged Harry into the kitchen, pausing only to let him drop his trunk by the sofa.
“Would you like some tea?” Ginny asked as she poured two cups from the pot on the stove.
“I would love some,” Harry smiled at her. She smiled back. “Where are the girls?”
“They’re at school. I will have to go pick them up in a few hours. But, I want to catch up with you first. How are you, Harry?” Ginny asked as she sat down handing Harry a cup of tea.
“I’m all right, considering…” Harry rolled his eyes as his voice trailed off.
“Yeah, Ron told me. I’m sorry Harry.” She reached across tableable and squeezed his hand.
Harry looked at her and smiled. He noticed the sorrow in her eyes. “Enough about me; how are you?”
She looked away, “I’m O.K.”
“Gin, c’mon. This is me you’re talking to. You know, Harry? I have always been able to tell when something’s wrong. Speak.”
She raised her head and looked into his eyes and sighed heavily. She knew she couldn’t get away with not telling him everything. “It’s hard. I can’t sleep. I barely eat. I miss him so much.” Tears started forming in her eyes.
“Gin, I’m sorry,” Harry said as he squeezed her hand.
“No, Harry. I keep all this bottled up… I have missed you. You’re the only one I can talk to.”
“Gin… then why did you stop writing me?”
“I just… I don’t know… it’s stupid. I just felt like I was weighing all my problems on you, when you had enough to deal with.” Harry reached up and wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Gin, I loved your letters. I made me know that you were here. I was so worried about you and the girls. Colin was a great friend, and you were my best friend. I knew I had to be there for you. I missed your letters. Why do you think I kept writing?”
“I’m sorry Harry. It was hard to write it all down. I wanted to talk to you. I needed you here to listen to me, to hug me, to beat me upside the head when I was being a prat.” Harry could see the corners of her mouth creep up a little at the last comment.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t here, Gin. Melissa and I just couldn’t take it anymore. When my boss offered the New York position, I jumped on it. I needed to get away…” Ginny’s face fell. “No, not from you, from her.”
Ginny looked concernedly up at him. “ Harry, what happened with you and Melissa? You’ve never told me.”
Harry took a sip of his tea, contemplating how he would answer that question.
