Disclaimer: Charlie and Remus are not mine...wish they were though. I'm just borrowing them, and I'll give them back when I'm done with them. Song lyrics belong to the Great Goddess of Music Madonna!
WARNING: Slash! This is slash! Male on male content. Gee, I wonder who? ;-) NC-17 slash at that. So let's recap what you'll find in this story. Two men in very detailed sexual positions. Together. With each other. That's slash. You have been warned many times, in big letters and small words.
Dedication: Oh yeah, this is definitely to Kitten. It was in your bed where the idea was born...
Author's note: Dude! What's with the weird Charlie pairings? Scratch that, what's with the weird pairings? We've been doing some odd ones lately. Ah well. I actually think these two would make a great couple. This isn't just cause I think the two of them rolling around in bed together is very hot. Oh, I do, don't get me wrong! But I think they'd be so good for each other! This takes place....hmm...well, it's not at all connected to Goblet of Fire, but it happens around the middle to end.
Beautiful Stranger
//Haven't we met?
//You're some kind of beautiful stranger...//
Charlie Weasley sat morosely behind his desk, poking at some paper work with his finger. He'd ended up behind a desk! It was an old, battered desk with only three legs, but it was still a desk. In an office. Of sorts. So it was just an apartment in Diagon Alley, and it was a bit on the dirty side, but it was still an office. And there were at least three more 'offices' on the floor of the building Charlie and his fellow dragon enthusiasts rented. It was-technically-the center of operations for the Society for Protection of *and Prevention of* Cruelty to Dragons. It was Charlie's pet project, and therefore he had ended up in a managerial position. Which he felt didn't suit him at all. he wasn't the management type. At all.
Charlie had been campaigning for better rights for dragons for years. It was his passion. Ever since school, he had been addicted to magical beasts. Care of Magical Creatures had been his favorite class. And he had often begged the gamekeeper, Hagrid, to take him out when he had to go into the Forbidden Forest. He wasn't in the least bit frightened of the creatures there. In fact, he was fascinated by them. he had read every book he could get his hands on that involved magical beasts, devouring them. Dragons were his favorite though. He loved working with them, observing them, living with them...he had spent nearly two years in the wilds of Romania, living in what was called a Dragon Post, a small hut out in the wilderness, near dragon breeding grounds. The conditions were hell, but Charlie loved every minute of it.
//I'd rather be back in Romania...// There was something about field work that just couldn't be beat. But he supposed this wasn't that bad. He had even made the flat look like a real office. During business hours it had the desk, with two chairs. one behind it for Charlie, and one in front for any visitors. On the wall behind him was his license to handle dangerous creatures, and his dragon master certificate. There was a picture of his family on his desk, and plenty of convincing paperwork. One could ignore the stove and sink on the other wall. After hours, the desk was shoved against the wall and the bed was pulled out of a slot in the wall, and it was Charlie's apartment. All in all, it worked well
//I hate this. The sitting with hardly anything to do...// He supposed he could do some paperwork, but he really didn't feel like it. It was all requisition forms, and forms asking for money, and sometimes forms *offering* money. Those were the best. There hadn't been to many of those lately. //Wish I had a secretary. At least I'd have something to do. I could send her out for a sandwich, or coffee, or something. Or ask if I had any appointments today. Crap! *Do* I have any appointments today?//
Panicking, Charlie flipped open the small leather planner his mother had sent him for Christmas. There was a couple of messy scribbles down for the day, obviously quilled in by Rowena Zouvae. She manned the desk when Charlie was out. And he tried to be out as often as possible. Ro was okay, a little bit uptight, but she knew her dragons. And Charlie could never read her writing. And she never wrote things out, just assumed Charlie knew what she meant. She tended to make appointments for him, and then not tell him about them. She assumed he'd check his planner. He *never* checked his planner!
//I guess I do...Damnit, why does the woman insist on using shorthand? Okay, abbreviations. Same difference. Apparently I'm seeing an R.L. at....five minutes from now. Thanks Ro, could've left me a memo...// The shaggy haired dragon master sighed, putting the planner down. Now he'd have to do the 'businessman thing' as he and Bill called it. Presenting a professional and formal disposition, and hopefully getting money without having to give anything. //Wish I could've stayed for more of the Triwizard Tournament. That had been good. Harry did a damn good job with that Horntail, too. Circe's a real wild one...//
Suddenly, there was a timid knock at the door. Charlie groaned, and smoothed down his thin leather tunic. He refused to wear robes. He was still a dragon master, even if he was behind a desk. He wore a brown leather tunic and thicker leather breeches, with heavy black leather boots. He ran a hand through his rather scruffy red hair, and hoped he didn't look too dirty. On the way back from a late breakfast he had helped re-capture an escaped owl from Eylops. He picked up a piece of paper, forced his face to look serious, and called for whomever was outside to 'enter'.
The door creaked open slowly, and a rather shabbily dressed young man stepped in timidly. Charlie cocked his head, raising an eyebrow. This wasn't the usual sort he got in. The only people that came to see him were folks who worked for him, wanted to work for him, or wanted to fund him. He regarded the stranger with what he hoped was an open and friendly manner. He was tall, and very slim. his hair was shaggy, and a rich tawny color, streaked through with white. His features were a bit square, but well defined. High cheekbones, narrow face, wide eyes that looked almost golden in the light. His robes were brown and darned in so many places, Charlie wondered if there was any original robe left. He had a very humble and quiet air about him, as though he would go out of his way to remain in good graces. He looked maybe ten or so years older then Charlie, despite the white in his hair.
"Can I help you?" Charlie asked, putting down the papers. he folded his hands on the desk, wondering what on earth this could be about. There had been no mention of what the appointment pertained to. Maybe he was a dragon advocate?
"Well, I hope you can." The man said, still standing just inside the doorway.
"Okay. Come in, sit down. Can I get you coffee? Tea?" He smiled, watching as the stranger walked gracefully into the office and took the offered seat. Charlie got a good look at his face, and was amazed to see how tired he looked.
"Tea would be nice, thank you." A soft, almost sad smile. Charlie pushed out his chair, and padded over to the stove. he tapped his wand to the tea kettle, and it began to steam. he poured out some into a chipped mug, frowning at it.
"Sugar?"
"Yes, please. Two lumps, if that's all right."
"No problem." Charlie added the sugar, shooting glances over his shoulder at this strange man. He was sitting, hands folded in his lap, looking pleasantly ahead. He wasn't glancing around the office, or trying to read Charlie's paperwork. That was what most people did...."Here's your tea." The dragon master handed over the mug, still smiling. He sat back down behind his desk, folding his hands loosely on the top of it. "Pardon me for saying this, and I don't mean any offense but you really don't look like the type I'm used to getting in here." That received a soft chuckle, and Charlie grinned in relief. "Usually it's people that work with the Society, or it's rich old blokes who feel good about giving to 'charity'. That's not what this is, but I'm not going to say no when they hand me a voucher for a couple of hundred sickles. So...what's this all about, Mr....uh...sorry, I don't have your name..."
"That in itself may clear a few things up." Again, that rather sad little smile. Charlie just waited, his curiosity building with every moment. "My name is Remus Lupin...er...do I need to go on?" He looked a bit frightened, and he had a poised look to him, as though he was ready to leap out of his chair at the slightest movement.
"Uh...no." Charlie said. Well, that did explain a few things. //So it's not the light making his eyes look gold. Huh. An honest to god werewolf. Better let him know I'm not gonna kick him out...// "How's the tea? Mum says my tea tastes like mud, so sorry if it's not that good."
"It's fine, thank you." Remus relaxed, and Charlie took a deep breath. He still wasn't sure why he was here.
"So, Mr. Lupin, what exactly can I do for you?" He was sure his confusion showed in his voice.
"Your reputation with handling....dangerous beasts is well known." Lupin said, giving a bitter smile as he spoke. "I know you work mainly with dragons, but..." He paused, and Charlie could tell the werewolf was searching for words. //A werewolf. I've only read about them. He looks so...human. Well he is. Sort of.// "I've heard you're very good with magical beasts. That you have a repoirt with them. What do you know about werewolves, Mr. Weasley?"
"Call me Charlie. And I know a goodly amount. I studied them when I was in school."
"Then you know what happened when we transform?"
"Yeah. You become..." Now there was something he couldn't put delicately. He had been about to say 'vicious killers', but realized it might be a bit insulting. And so far he had no desire to insult Remus. In fact, the man seemed quite pleasant.
"Mindless animals. Creatures with no thought but to kill. There is of course, the wolfsbane potion, but it is highly expensive. Not to mention rare. You've tamed dragons?"
//So that's it.// "As much as a dragon can be tamed. I've docilized them, for transport to reserves. And to live in them, of course. We need to check up on them, so they have to be used to people. But, to answer your question, yeah. I'm going out a limb here and assuming you want me to....tame you?"
"My wolf form, yes." Lupin nodded. "Believe me, I have considered many, many options. If you don't want to, or have doubts, please don't hesitate to tell me so. I am well aware of how my kind are viewed."
"I actually think werewolves are kind of neat, but don't value my opinion too much. I gave up a position on the Wasps for this job..." Charlie grinned, hoping to put Lupin at ease. The reserved way he was holding himself made Charlie more nervous then the fact he was a werewolf.
"Ah, a sportsman. I've never been much of a Quidditch fan myself...if wolves were meant to fly, we'd have wings." He smiled, and Charlie laughed. He remembered the headlines when it had come out that Pr. Remus Lupin was a werewolf. His mother had had cats, wailing for hours on end about Ron being at 'that place' with 'that thing!'. He didn't see what the big deal was. As far as he could tell, there was nothing wrong with Remus.
"Well, I'll certainly give this my best shot, Mr. Lupin." //Wow...fieldwork right in the office! So it's not dragons. So what? This is almost better. No one's tackled werewolves before, there's too much prejudice...//
"Please call me Remus. Er...about compensation...I'm sorry, but I can pay you very little..." Remus blanched, eyes apologetic. Charlie shook his head. Payment hadn't even occurred to him. He was too excited about actually having some hands on experience.
"Tell you what....this room's pretty cheap. Chip in on rent and stuff, and we'll call it even. Uh, do you have a problem staying here, while we do this? I think it'd be easier that way."
"Staying here won't be a problem."
Charlie swore he saw relief in Remus' tired face. //Remus. It's a nice name. He's a nice guy. I can only imagine what he's been through. I hope I can help him.//
"Great! It's all settled then. You can move your stuff in today, and we'll get started tonight." //Get started? I don't even know what I'm going to do. There's not much I can do, I guess, till he transforms. Spend most of the time preparing for that, I guess.//
"I cannot express how grateful I am..."
"Hey, it's no problem." Charlie stood up, and Remus did as well. "This isn't a chance I'm going to get every day. I'm not going to pass it up." he smiled warmly and held out his hand. Remus regarded it for a moment, before grasping it tightly
"Thank you..."
"You're welcome. I'll see you in a couple of hours?" Remus nodded, and Charlie swore there were tears in his eyes as he turned to leave the office...
//You could be good for me.//
//I've got a taste for danger.//
