A/N: Just want to let you all know that I plan for this to be multi-chaptered, possibly novel length. This first chapter is a continuation of the last (main) chapter of DH, picking up right after Harry says "...I've had enough trouble for a lifetime." Enjoy!!

As the portraits murmured agreement to Harry's sentiments, some actually saying things like "Hear, hear!" or "Damn right!", Harry took a moment to sort of soak in their support-as well as Dumbledore's pride and gratitude-for a bit longer, before bidding the portraits good-bye and exiting the office, Ron and Hermione in tow. A few minutes later, they reached a singularly untouched Gryffindor Tower-singularly because while most of the rest of the castle was littered with damage and debris, the first and best true home of the Boy Who Lived was as pristine as before the battle-probably because all the Gryffindors who stayed to fight didn't let the enemy near their sanctuary. Or perhaps Harry's firm belief that this was his first true home endowed this section of the castle with the same protection that his sacrifice in the Forbidden Forest granted his friends and loved ones.
Either way, they were glad to see the common room and dormitories were undamaged, and when Harry and Ron trudged upstairs to the boys' dormitories for a good long sleep, they found that the beds they usually occupied were unused, yet they were kept neat and tidy, as though the remaining seventh-year Gryffindor boys-or perhaps the house-elves-knew that Harry and Ron would eventually return. Nobody disturbed the trio, and they slept peacefully for the first time in what felt like ages.
Waking up at daybreak, a full twenty-four hours after they had fallen asleep, Harry and Ron were amazed at how they slept for so long, until they found identical notes on each of their bedside tables. They read:
I thought it would be best for you to get in a good, long rest. I gave you a simple Sleeping Draught when I found you here, and I warned everyone not to disturb you.
Madam Pomfrey
"That was nice of her," Harry said, yawning and casting around for something to wear, noticing that he was currently dressed in a pair of the Hogwarts hospital wing's standard pajamas. Ron was dressed similarly, and the clothes they had on previously were nowhere to be found. However, this was also explained by Madam Pomfrey herself coming up the dormitory stairs, Hermione's beaded bag in her hand. "Oh good, you're awake. Timed it perfectly. Took me ages to figure out where you lot had all your things, but Hermione managed to tell me before she fell asleep. Right, I'll leave you to it. Oh, and Harry, dear, thanks so much for doing what you did. I daresay my talents would have been put to more sinister uses had you failed, whether I wished them to or not. The entire Wizarding world is in your debt."
Madam Pomfrey had dropped her usual stern, disapproving bedside manner and was now talking to Harry and Ron not only as equals, but with the same reverence that the rest of the Wizarding community held them to, especially Harry. Perhaps a year of working under the brutal command of the Carrows had caused her to be more sensitive to her patients, particularly the ones who were under her care because they stood up to the Death Eaters who were left in control of Hogwarts when Voldemort hijacked the British magical government. "Thanks, Madam Pomfrey," Ron and Harry chorused as the Hogwarts nurse left the room and Harry and Ron began to rummage through the bag.
As they got dressed, they were silent until Ron spoke up. "Erm, Harry?" "What's up?" Harry asked, halfway through putting on his socks. "Look mate, I know I acted like a git last year when you broke things off with Ginny. I know now that the only reason you did that was because you love her, and wanted her to be safe. I probably would have done the same, had I been in your position and Hermione in Ginny's. My point is, feel free to pick up where you left off. I can speak for all my family-even Fred-when I say it's probably the best thing that could happen so soon after so much tragedy." Harry considered this for a moment. "Thanks, Ron. I appreciate your maturity about this. A year ago I would have never thought you were capable of it, but heaven knows we've all changed. To be honest, I was beginning to wonder when I could resume things with Ginny. Now I can choose that moment without outside influence. Thanks." "No problem, mate. After all, what better boyfriend could my sister have then the man who vanquished Voldemort?" At that, they both laughed, but it was a subdued, heavy laugh, as though their laughter expelled some of the weight those words carried along with the air from their lungs. Indeed, they seemed slightly more cheerful as they descended the stairs to the Gryffindor common room.
As Harry reached the bottom, he barely had time to glimpse a roaring fire, a plate full of sanwiches, and Kreacher wearing one of the standard Hogwarts house elf tea towels, before something red collided with his chest, and a pair of arms threw themselves around him, squeezing so tight that Harry was sure they never wanted to let go. As Ginny Weasley composed herself and loosened her grip on Harry, she looked up into his face. Suddenly it was as if the past year never happened, that they had been together all this time, as they kissed like never before, basking in each other's love. Ron cleared his throat loudly, and they finally broke apart, both of them turning a shade of crimson mirroring Ron's most embarrassed blush. "Let's eat, I'm starving!" As Harry and Ginny rolled their eyes at each other and started tucking into their sandwiches, the entire group reflected on the events of the past year. Soon, the dead would be buried, the damage repaired, and the healing would begin. For some, this healing process had already begun; still others were nearly through with it. But each of the four young wizards all shared the same thought that they vaguely remembered voicing a long time ago: What's coming will come, and we'll just have to meet it when it does.
