Golden Hearts: Chapter 10: Chosen Kin
Arumus exited the Hogwarts Express, following Jordan and Percival out into the brisk night air. The crowd was abuzz with rumors that Harry Potter was flying a car to school, and both Percival and Jordan were swapping rumors a few feet away with some fourth years. Arumus spotted Draco moving toward the crowd toward him, the light of excitement in his eyes.
"Arumus," Draco said over the din as he clutched Arumus' sleeve. "Did you hear about Potter? He'll be expelled for sure, this time! What an idiot."
Arumus gave his cousin a cool look, trying to ignore the feel of his skin as the back of Draco's hand touched his own. "Yes, Draco. I heard the rumors. One fifth year came into my compartment claiming she had actually seen the car dip below the clouds. Surely Potter isn't so foolish as to think he was not spotted?"
"He's a scar-faced dimwit!" Draco declared happily.
Arumus arched a brow, and Draco spoke again. "So, you'll be going over in the canoes..." He smiled slyly. "Don't fall overboard, Cousin. I want to see you sorted into Slytherin..."
A large man who looked slightly familiar strode through the darkness loading a lantern. "Firs' Years!" He called out loudly and repetitively. A group of excited children all Arumus’ age was gathering around the man's feet. Arumus joined them. They traveled to the castle in small canoes that each held three or four people, though the huge, gruff man took one entirely to himself. He ordered the canoes forward amid a few frightened gasps.
The canoes set off, and Arumus pulled his cloak tighter to ward off the chill hanging over the lake. The moon and stars reflected in the still waters, rippling as the canoes cut through the deep darkness that was scattered with the pale reflections of glowing cloud cover. The magnificent view of the castle, perched upon a mountain cliff, loomed into the stillness surrounding the canoes as the new students gazed silently at the breathtaking vista. The turrets sparkled in against the night sky, full of lights winking from the windows.
Arumus shivered, but not from the chill. An electric charge seemed to race up his spine as they drew ever nearer to Hogwarts castle. They all bowed their heads as the canoes streamed silently beneath the cliff and through a cascade of ivy to enter an underground tunnel. Arumus exited the canoe first after it bumped to against the rocky ground beneath the castle, and he politely held out a hand to help the dreamy, blonde girl and a strangely familiar redhead, who had both sat behind him, disembark without getting wet.
"Thank you. That was very nice..." The blonde girl commented in a vague voice.
"Not at all..." Arumus responded, meeting her pale silver eyes, which seemed overly large in her face. He wondered who she was.
"I'm Luna," She said, as if reading the question in his gaze. "And this is my new friend, Ginny." She introduced the flame-haired girl.
"Arumus. Pleasure to meet you both," Arumus replied in a cool, measured tone.
Ginny smiled but didn't say anything. She seemed too busy taking in their surroundings. The huge man led them down a passageway, his lamp bobbing so high above their heads, and the new students emerged into the moonlight once more. Arumus felt grass beneath his feet, and the castle now towered high above them into the starry night sky.
They entered the castle via long, stone steps worn smooth by the countless feet of students over the thousand-year history of the school. The man knocked thrice on the oaken door that would allow them entry, and the door moved, opening on silent hinges.
A tall, dark haired witch greeted them, and her stern, lightly lined face spoke of a no-nonsense manner.
The large man presented them. "Here are the first years, Professor McGonagall."
"Thank you, Hagrid." She addressed the students. "Please, follow me."
McGonagall led the group into a grand entrance hall full of torches whose light caused the marble to gleam almost wetly. Massive staircases obviously led to additional floors, and Arumus noted the entrance into the Great Hall, where he knew they would all be sorted, but Professor McGonagall steered the first year students into a small room that led from the hall.
McGonagall turned to address the students. "You are all welcomed to Hogwarts. The start-of-term banquet will commence shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is an important ceremony for all students. While you attend Hogwarts, your houses will be something like your family. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in the house dormitories, and spend free time in your respective house common rooms.
"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history, and each has produced magnificent witches and wizards..." She went on to describe the system of house points and the requirements for winning the House Cup. Professor McGonagall suggested they "smarten themselves up" before leaving, assuring them all that she would return momentarily.
Arumus glanced at the other students who were murmuring nervously among themselves. He, too, felt slightly nervous, but he also recognized the surge of excitement pulsing strong through his veins.
McGonagall returned and instructed them all to form a line and follow. They emerged from the small room and entered the Great Hall through large double doors. Thousands of candles lit the room from their perches in thin air, and the ceiling sparkled with the night sky as if open, though Arumus knew that the ceiling was actually enchanted. Shining goblets and plates glinted in the candlelight, and Professor McGonagall led them to the front table, at which the teachers all sat. Their line halted facing the other students, who were all seated at four similar tables.
McGonagall placed a wooden stool before their line and set a battered, grubby wizard's hat upon it. Everyone in the hall gazed at the hat, and suddenly it moved, a slight rip opening, mouth-like, at the brim as it burst into song.
"You may think I'm a bit unkempt,
A ragged, bent, eyesore,
But I've got brains and spirit, yes,
I have them in great store!
I can tell where all hearts lie
And what they all should be
Because I am the Sorting Hat,
You may rely on me!
I'll sit upon your head and find
The simple truth
In breast and mind:
You may belong in Gryffindor,
Such brave and daring friends,
The griffin holds the branch of war,
But they'll always make amends.
You could belong in Hufflepuff,
Loyal, kind and true,
The badger holds the branch of right,
So they'll always tend to you.
You may belong in Ravenclaw,
Where wit and learning thrive,
The raven holds the branch of thought,
So their minds are quite alive.
You might belong in Slytherin,
Home to such cunning craft,
The snake wraps 'round the branch of guile,
So they’ll always be quite apt.
So pick me up and place me on,
I will not leave you flat.
Your future lies beyond my words,
As I'm a brilliant hat!"
The Sorting Hat took a bow, and the assembled students and teachers all rained applause upon the Hat's performance. Once the noise had died, Professor McGonagall withdrew a long parchment and unrolled it, calling the first name.
"Creevey, Colin!"
A small boy stepped forward, removing the hat from the stool and sitting in its place, placing the over large hat on his head eagerly. The Sorting Hat considered for a few moments, and then it declared her house in a shout.
"Gryffindor!"
The Gryffindor table cheered and applauded. Arumus watched as students were sorted, and soon his own name was called.
"Lestrange, Arumus!"
Arumus walked to the stool, sat down, and placed the battered old hat over his head. It was too large for him and fell over his ears, covering his eyes. A small voice spoke in his ear, and Arumus started in surprise.
"Hmmmmmm... Most interesting and difficult... You've got talent and plenty of ambition, and I haven't seen the likes of your mind for quite a while. You'd do well in Ravenclaw, you know, but... The ambition is so strong, and you like to stay in the shadows, so Slytherin would serve you well. There's courage, too, but you've got too sly a tongue for Gryffindor."
Please, thought Arumus desperately, Hat, I have to be in Slytherin. He thought of how his life would change if he failed to be placed in Slytherin. No one in his home would ever trust him again, his uncle would be disappointed, and Draco would be simply unbearable. He addressed the hat again in his mind. Listen, Hat, I know that is where I belong. Please, put me in Slytherin!
The Sorting Hat paused, considering. "Very well, you've chosen your kin. I'll place you in... Slytherin!" The last word was spoken to the entire hall.
The Slytherin table hooted and applauded, many seeming avidly interested in Arumus, likely due to his infamous last name. Arumus joined his house, glancing at Draco fleetingly. His cousin seemed pleased, even a bit smug. Arumus nodded to him coolly, sitting between the two boys he had met on the Hogwarts Express. Jordan and Percival were glad to see him, and Jordan slapped him on the back in congratulations.
Arumus watched the rest of the sorting with only half his attention. The Sorting Hat had seen the obvious. Too sly a tongue, it had said. That had to mean the hat knew his most well guarded secret. Arumus knew he truly belonged in Slytherin.
He came back to reality as he heard the last name, Ginny Weasley, and watched as she was sorted into Gryffindor. Her brothers greeted her with applause and pride, and Arumus wondered vaguely what it felt like to have so many older brothers who all seemed so... nice.
