Hermione let out a huge sigh of relief as she shut the door to her dorm room that she now shared with Draco. Somehow, she had managed to avoid Ron all day. However, that wasn't hard considering it was Sunday. Tomorrow however, was going to be fun. She had all of her classes with both him and Lavender. It helped knowing that Ginny and Harry were both on her side, but she honestly didn't know what that meant when it came to classes, the three of them always sat together. And, if she was being honest with herself, she did not want to sit anywhere close to Ron. She was still heartbroken, yes, but her anger had kicked in now, and that emotion took over everything else. She honestly didn't know what she would do it Ron tried to talk to her. Maybe slug him one like she had done to Malfoy in third year, that had really made her feel a whole lot better then, it would probably make her feel better now too. It would be priceless to see the look on Ron's face after she hit him, especially after having Blaise punch him in her honor.
Hermione walked to her wardrobe and changed into her pajamas, silently thanking Dumbledore for allowing her to have patrolling off for the night. He had stated to her that morning that she had been through enough, and that he wanted her to take the night to relax. So, Dumbledore had assigned two prefects to patrol the halls tonight instead of her and Malfoy. If he had gotten his way, Hermione would not be patrolling for the rest of the week, but she had politely refused his offer, assuring him that one nights rest was all that she required.
She pulled back her covers and slid into her bed, loving the feeling of the soft cotton sheets against the skin that was exposed from her pj's. Surprisingly enough, she fell asleep quickly even though dread about facing Ron was bugging her.
When she opened her eyes the next morning, they had a determined spark within them. Hermione didn't know why, but she felt a rush of adrenaline, determination within herself to make Ron realize how badly he messed up. She wasn't the type of girl to just throw herself at another guy in order to make Ron jealous, but she knew that her even speaking with someone of the opposite sex drove Ron nuts. She was going to make sure to be extra nice to everyone around her, especially the boys. Not only that, but she also felt like actually taking the time to get ready this morning. And this is how she found herself applying pink lip-gloss, and mascara. She had debated putting on some eyeliner, but she didn't want to look like she had tried too hard. She also preferred herself with the natural look, and even wearing mascara she felt different, girlier, prettier. She used her wand to make her wavy hair more soft looking, taking away the usual frizz that she had stopped fighting a while ago. Thankfully however, with age, the frizz of her hair decreased quite a bit.
She pulled on her robe and studied her appearance in the mirror. Although not a lot of changes were made, the small ones were noticeable, but weren't obnoxiously done so. Knowing she looked good, it put her in a good mood. And she sent her reflection a smile before heading out of her room.
When Hermione opened her door, she ran right into Draco, who happened to be standing at the other side.
"Ouch," Hermione said stepping back.
Draco just raised his eyebrow at her.
"What are you doing standing at the other side of my door Malfoy?" Hermione asked, annoyance already clear in her voice.
"Was coming to make sure that you were heading to breakfast and classes. I didn't want to hear another word from Blaise about checking up on you and making sure you're okay and blah blah," He said waving his hand for emphasis.
"Well thanks for your concern, but I'm okay and don't need a babysitter."
Hermione didn't know whether Draco heard what she said, or had just chosen to ignore her when he said, "You look different."
"What?"
"You look different," Draco said studying her. "You look… like a girl," he said, the words coming out slowly.
"I've always been a girl Malfoy, thanks for noticing," Hermione said her cheeks flushed in embarrassment and anger.
"I know you're a girl, I'm not stupid. I mean, you look more like a girl compared to usual."
"Thanks?"
"Are you wearing makeup?" Draco asked suddenly.
Hermione's felt her cheeks heat up, the blush now completely obvious.
"I put on a little yes," Hermione said embarrassed. "I knew it was a bad idea, I'm going to go and take it off," she said turning around, heading back into her room.
Draco reached out and grabbed her arm before realizing what he was doing. Hermione's eyes snapped to his hand, which was around her bicep, and then looked up at his face, her eyes wide in confusion and questions.
Draco released his hold once he realized what he had done, and disgustedly wiped his hand on his pants, which Hermione noticed.
"We don't have time for you to go and take it off, besides, it looks fine Granger, no need to get your knickers in a twist. Just never pegged you as the type of girl to do her hair and makeup."
"I don't usually, I just felt like doing it today."
Hermione saw recognition flash in Draco's eyes. "Ah yes, you have to see The Weasel today. Him and that Brown tramp."
Hermione felt anger flare up, but kept silent, not wanting Draco to know how much even thinking about seeing Ron and Lavender bugged her.
"Not that I care about you or your love life, but that bloke is an idiot. I never understood what you saw in him anyways. He's a complete dimwitted git."
"I don't know what I saw in him either," Hermione said quietly.
Hermione saw something flash across Draco's face, but it was gone before she could register what she had seen.
"Just curious, but are you planning on doing something to get back at Weaselbee?"
Hermione looked at Draco confused. Not once had her and Draco talked this much before, let along civilly, but she found herself answering him anyways. "Sort of, yes."
"Gonna kiss Potter in front of him?"
Whatever part of the civil conversation she once felt, threw out the window with that comment.
"No I am not going to kiss Harry in front of Ron. For one, he's dating one of my best friends, second, Harry is like a brother to me, and third, I am not the kind of girl who just goes and throws herself at a guy in order to get revenge. I'm not Pansy."
Draco quirked an eyebrow at Hermione's outburst amused.
"Pretty sure everyone knows you're nothing like her."
Hermione had nothing to respond with, so she pushed past him, heading to the door. The start of her morning had already been different compared to most. First, she had done her hair and makeup, second, she had ended up with Draco at her bedroom doorway, and then the two of them had a somewhat civil conversation. If that's what she could call it? She felt herself smile. Maybe today wasn't going to be as bad as she had thought. If she could have somewhat of a conversation with her arch nemesis then an ex boyfriend and the girl he was shagging couldn't be too much for her to handle. At least, that's what she told herself in order to stay positive as she opened the door to the Great Hall for breakfast.
She spotted Harry and Ginny, who both waved her over as soon as she had stepped place inside the Great Hall. As she scanned the Gryffindor table, she also spotted Ron, and Lavender, who were both surprisingly not sitting together. Ron was sitting with Seamus farther down the table, and Lavender was sitting with some 6th year that Hermione couldn't recall the name of. She felt herself let out a deep breath of relief, knowing that she was going to be eating breakfast with Harry and Ginny, without Ron present. From the looks of things, Harry and Ginny still hadn't forgiven him about cheating on her.
When she caught Harry's eye, she sent him a genuine smile, and she made her way over to the Gryffindor table. She took her usual spot beside Harry, and smiled at Ginny who was across from her as she sat down.
"Morning Hermione," Harry greeted.
"Morning Harry."
"Hermione, you look gorgeous!" Ginny exclaimed, rather louder than Hermione wanted.
Hermione felt Ron look over at her, and she hid behind her hair.
"Gin, it's a tiny bit of mascara and lip gloss, not the end of the world." Hermione hissed under her breath.
"And you did your hair," Ginny said smiling radiantly.
"So what if I did? Is that a crime?" Hermione whispered quietly.
"Oh Hermione, don't be so defensive," Ginny said smacking her hand lightly. "You look totally hot."
Hermione felt her cheeks flush once again in embarrassment.
"Ron is really going to see what he is missing. Good for you," Ginny said approvingly.
"So you don't think it's too much? That I'm making it look like I'm trying too hard?" Hermione asked.
"Honestly, I couldn't even really tell that you did anything Hermione," Harry said softly.
Ginny rolled her eyes at her boyfriend. "That's because guys are oblivious to absolutely everything. Hell, I could probably dye my hair pink and you wouldn't notice."
"Hey! Yes I would!" Harry said defensively.
Ginny waved him off "Not the point. Anyways, to answer your questions, no I don't think it's too much. It's not like you obnoxiously changed your appearance anyways, and a lot of people probably won't even be able to tell. But, me being who I am, I notice everything. You made a good choice going with the natural look, but spicing it up a bit with mascara and lip-gloss. It enhances your features just enough, that you look more girly. I can also tell that you feel prettier just by the way that you're acting. And I've always told you that you should take the frizz out of your hair. Your hair is gorgeous, and it looks so much nicer once the frizz is taken out."
Hermione, despite herself, felt herself smile. "I do feel good today."
"And I can see that. You should feel good Hermione, you're a gorgeous girl and you have so much to live for. Don't let some stupid cheating git bring you down.
"Thanks Ginny" Hermione said smiling. "It just sucks to think that the one person I thought I knew more than anything turned out to be someone I hardly knew at all."
"Yeah, well at least you figured that out now before it was too late. I mean yeah he's my brother and I do love him even though he was a complete git to you, you're better off without someone like that, especially when it comes to relationships."
"I agree with Ginny. I mean Ron is still my best friend, but what he did to you was wrong, and he knows it. Just give him some time and I'm sure that everything will work itself out, and you guys will be friends again, maybe not now, but eventually."
"And to be completely honest," Ginny started up before Hermione could respond to Harry, "I never really thought you and Ron would work out in a relationship anyways. You were good as best friends. I mean yeah you argued and disagreed a lot as friends, so it was only obvious that things would get even harder once feelings became involved. Plus you're both very different when it comes to opinions, it was only time before something tore you guys apart."
"You're both right," Hermione said, realizing the truth in their words. "It doesn't make the situation suck any less. I just wish I had realized that before.. everything."
"Well they say everything happens for a reason, right? So take this as a learning experience. And you know what? Yeah, it sucks that your first time was with a cheating ass, but we all know that you and Ron are going to put this whole thing aside one day and become friends again. Be thankful that you shared yourself with someone who does care about you. It could have been a lot worse. Yeah, Ron cheated and that really sucks, but he does care about you. He's just an idiot."
"Yeah I guess you're right. I just thought that Ron and me were meant to be. Everyone thought that."
"I think deep down, a part of you know that's not true. And who cares what everyone else thinks, it's not their life, they can mind their own business. They can't depict who you should or shouldn't date, in the end that's your decision."
"I understand everything you're saying, and I do agree with most of it, but it still doesn't make what happened hurt any less. I was betrayed by one of my best friends, and that's what hurts me more than anything. I'm not saying we won't ever be friends again, but for the moment, I'm not ready to talk to him, nor do I want to talk to him. I need time to heal and deal with what happened."
"Obviously you do Hermione! We're not telling you to just get over it! We understand that you are hurt and that you are going to need time to heal and deal with everything, we just want you to know that we support you and are here for you. I just wanted you to know that I think that you deserve better, and that you can do better."
"Ron knows he messed up. I think that's why he's avoiding us. He knows that we are here helping you get through the hurt that he has caused you, and that right now him staying away is what's best for you." Harry said.
"Well regardless of if he's doing it intentionally or not, I don't want to have to deal with him right now, everything is still too fresh."
"Enough of this conversation and bringing you back down when you came here in such a good mood this morning looking awesome. I'm starved, let's dig in" Ginny said grabbing pancakes and bacon that had appeared on the table.
Hermione agreed, and scooped some scrambled eggs onto her plate, along with a piece of white toast.
Blaise watched Hermione as she entered the Great Hall, and was happy to see that she seemed to be in a pretty decent mood. He even noticed that she had done something different with her hair. He also saw her grab food, and was glad to see that it was without Ginny or Harry forcing her.
Blaise spotted Draco as he walked in the Great Hall, and he greeted him once he was sliding into the seat next to him.
"Morning."
"Morning" Draco responded.
"Hermione seems to be in a good mood this morning."
"And you're telling me this because?" Draco asked.
"No reason."
"I would prefer you refrain from making such comments. I could really care less about how the Mudblood is feeling."
"I'm just saying that she looks different."
"Well obviously, she's wearing makeup and she did her hair" Draco stated nonchalantly.
Blaise raised his eyebrow and smirked.
Draco bit into a piece of bacon and scowled at Blaise. "What?"
"You said Hermione did her hair and makeup."
"Because she did?"
"And you noticed" Blaise said, the smirk on his face growing.
"So?"
"Just saying" Blaise said cockily.
"And what exactly are you just saying?" Draco asked, abandoning his meal as he glared at Blaise.
"I'm just saying that it's funny how you noticed that Hermione did her hair and makeup."
"I'm an observant individual Zabini, I notice things. That doesn't mean anything, nor does me noticing her doing something different have any significant meanings. So stop whatever game you're playing."
"I'm not playing games Draco. I'm just surprised that you noticed something about someone that you're supposed to hate. I'm not doing it to try and piss you off, I'm saying it because I think that you should try and get to know Hermione now, especially since you're living with her. This gives you time to get to know one another on a more personal level, without other people getting in the way and altering opinions."
"She's a Mudblood Blaise, there's no outside opinions altering anything. She is what she is, and I am what I am. And yes, I'm living with her, but that's only because she ended getting herself beat up because she couldn't defend herself, and she won't tell Potter and Wealsey what's going on, so I'm stuck having to babysit and deal with her."
"And it doesn't bug you in the slightest that some man, yes a grown adult is attacking and beating up teenage girls because he can overpower them? I didn't think that even you could stoop that low Draco."
"I don't agree with any man laying his hands on a woman, regardless of the situation and you know that Zabini."
"Then watch her. For me. I'm not saying that you need to be best friends, but at least keep your eye on her while you're patrolling. You don't even have to make it known that you are doing it. I would do it myself, but then Dumbledore would start asking questions, and I don't want to get you into trouble for telling me about the situation. You know I care about her, she's one of my best friends. Even if you don't like her, you should do this for me mate. We've been friends for years, and you know I can't do anything about the situation, and it kills me having to sit back and watch and wait for something to happen."
"You're utterly annoying and unpleasant at times with your requests. Did you know that?"
"Does that mean you'll look out for Hermione for me?"
"Well you didn't exactly leave me with a bloody choice now did you. But I want it to be clear that I am only doing this because you guilted me into it. Not because I want to."
"I really appreciate this mate," Blaise said slapping Draco on the back.
Draco leaned away and growled "Yeah, whatever."
Dumbledore stood up and made his daily morning speech, before sending everybody off to class. Draco and Blaise, along with all of the other seventh year Slytherins followed behind the seventh year Gryffindors, as their first class Monday mornings was with their oh so favourite other house.
Draco couldn't help the smirk that edged into his face when he saw Ron straggling behind Hermione and Harry, looking lost and like he had just found out his puppy ran away. Since Draco was in a bad mood, he found this as a perfect opportunity to let off some steam.
"Looks like Weaselbee's finally known for what he is, a loser."
Ron stopped in his tracks, and turned around to look at Draco, his face livid.
Draco smirked at how easily he could get under this red heads skin. Everyone who had heard the comment, had stopped walking and turned to see what sort of scene would pan out, including Harry and Hermione.
"Shut up Malfoy."
"What? Truth hurt? Even Granger and Potter refuse to acknowledge your pathetic existence now."
"You don't know what you're talking about," Ron snapped angrily.
"Oh, but don't I? So are you trying to say that it's not true that you shagged that Lavender Brown tramp while dating Granger? Even I didn't think you would be able to stoop so low."
He heard Lavender gasp as all heads turned to look at her, and then at Ron, who was now so angry his face was turning a shade of purple.
Ron looked accusingly over at Hermione. "You told Malfoy what happened?"
"She didn't tell me anything Weaselbee. Pretty much the whole school knows what happened. It's common knowledge to most of the students actually," Draco drawled lazily.
"How about you shut your mouth before I come over there" Ron threatened.
Draco narrowed his eyes dangerously, and Ron took a step back at the sudden change in Draco's features and posture.
"You're lucky there's people around Weasley, otherwise I would teach you how to respect people who are superior to you. Besides, you don't have your usual army backing you up, so we both know what the outcome would be, and I promise you it will be worse then the last time you tried to come after me. Now how about you turn around, and walk away with whatever pride you could possibly have left."
Ron looked over at Hermione and Harry. Hermione stood staring straight ahead, and Harry shrugged, clearly not willing to back Ron up.
"Some friends you are," Ron mumbled as he started making his way through the crowd.
"Some friends we are? Did that actually just come out of your mouth? Pretty hypocritical considering you cheated on your so called 'best friend' Ron," Hermione said speaking up.
"And I told you I'm sorry Hermione. I don't know what else I can say. I realize I messed up, and it was a huge mistake. There's nothing else I can possibly say or do to take back what I did. I understand why you're mad at me, I was an asshole. And I'm glad that Harry is standing by your side, helping you deal with the hurt that I caused you. I can only hope that with time this all blows over and we can put it all aside and be best friends again."
Hermione just nodded, not knowing what else to say. She appreciated Ron's apology, and was glad that he did want to still be friends, but she just needed time away from him to get over what had happened.
"Well that was utterly repulsive, and pathetic Weasley. Now, if you don't mind, some of us are trying to make it to class in time this morning," Draco said mockingly as he pushed his way past Ron, not gently either.
"I really hate that guy.." Ron stated as he watched Draco walk away.
"You and me both," Harry said speaking up finally.
Ron looked over at Harry, surprised that he had commented on what he had said. When Harry saw Ron look at him, he nodded his head, acknowledging him, and then turned and headed towards the classroom with Hermione.
Ron followed behind, his spirits rising slightly. He was hoping that maybe things would be back to normal quicker than he had thought.
