The rest of the day went by uneventfully, with no more confrontations between the Gryffindors and the Slytherins. Draco however, was still in an extremely foul mood, especially because he had to patrol with Hermione later that night. He didn't know why he agreed to watch over the girl, hell, she's an adult, she should be able to take care of herself. Or, better yet, get Potter or Weasley to watch over her, not him, the person who hated her more than anything.
But, he was an idiot and agreed to do it because Blaise pretty much guilted him into it. That, and he knew that Blaise wouldn't have shut up about it until he gave in. And Draco eventually would, which Blaise knew.
Draco ate dinner in silence, not feeling like communicating with anyone. Blaise must have sensed Draco's foul mood, because he left him alone and conversed with other people around him.
Dinner couldn't end soon enough for Draco, and when it finally did, he was the first one out of there. He threw himself down onto a couch in the common area, and closed his eyes.
Draco shot up, his hand out, when he heard the door slam shut.
"Malfoy! Put me down!" Hermione squeaked terrified.
Draco's eyes focused and he saw Hermione, who was pressed up against the ceiling, unable to do anything.
He lowered his hand slowly, and waited until her feet touched solid ground before dropping his hand back to his side.
"My bad Granger," Draco said as a form of apology.
"What was that? How do you do that?"
"Because I'm amazing," Draco stated.
"Oh shut up Malfoy. I'm serious. How are you able to do that?"
"Don't worry about matters that don't concern you Mudblood."
"You're a git," Hermione said frustrated.
Draco smirked in response.
"You know you're not supposed to use dark magic on the school grounds Malfoy," Hermione said, her goody good side coming out.
"Don't get involved in things that don't concern you Granger."
"It concerns me because I live with you! I don't want to be living with a psychopath!"
"Well it's a little too late for you to have a choice in that now isn't it. You're stuck with me whether you like it or not, so you better get used to it. And one thing you need to learn is to mind your own business. I do not take well to people trying to get involved in my matters Granger, it would be wise of you to understand and respect that."
"Whatever Malfoy," Hermione said giving up.
She turned away from him and headed to her room, needing to cool down. She also needed to get out of there before she got herself into trouble. It was in her nature to get involved in things, even if they didn't concern her. It was just the type of person that she was. She like to help everyone, and liked to know as much as possible. And the fact that Draco knew some other kind of magic that he didn't need his wand for, drove her crazy, because she knew that if he was capable of something like that, then so was she. Also, she didn't like Draco having a type of advantage over her, and this newfound gift, or whatever it was, gave him one.
She grabbed her favourite book, Hogwarts a History, and read it for about the 100th time. It was a hobby of hers, especially when something bothered her. She didn't know why, but reading the book calmed her down.
Hearing a knock at her door made her jump, and her book flew off her lap and onto the floor with a loud thump.
"Granger? What the hell are you doing in there?" Came Draco's shouting voice from the other side of her bedroom door.
"Nothing!" Hermione exclaimed, jumping up from her bed, grabbing her book, and then flinging the door open.
Draco looked at Hermione's ruffled appearance and raised an eyebrow. "You look a little flushed, where you exercising or something?"
"What? No?"
"Well, whatever. Let's go, it's time to go patrolling."
Hermione grabbed her wand, and followed Draco out of their dorm.
"Can you pick up the pace Mudblood? I want to finish these patrolling rounds sometime tonight."
"Sorry I'm not a giraffe with extremely long legs Malfoy," Hermione snapped.
"A giraffe? What the hell is a giraffe?" Draco asked confused.
Before Hermione could help herself, she let out a giggle.
"What is so bloody amusing Granger? And what the hell is this giraffe thing you're talking about?" Draco asked stopping in his tracks, turning to look at her.
Hermione couldn't help it, hearing how frustrated Draco was getting made her lose it, and she felt herself laughing uncontrollably.
Draco walked up to Hermione and put both hands on Hermione's shoulders. "Granger what the hell is so bloody funny!" he growled.
Hermione laughed even harder.
Draco shook her shoulders. "Granger! Tell me what's so funny!"
"I…..i…do…don't…kknoow!"
"What? Granger you're talking nonsense," Draco growled annoyed.
Hermione took a few seconds to catch her breath, and after a last deep inhale, she had calmed herself down.
"Now, care to tell me what the hell was so bloody funny?"
"I just forgot that all you Pureblood's have absolutely no idea as to what else is out in the real world."
"I know everything that I need to know, everything that I deem as important."
"Okay then. What is a giraffe?"
Draco narrowed his eyes at her, and then turned and walked away.
"That's what I thought!" Hermione shouted, as she ran to catch up with him. Hermione rounded a corner; the one Draco had just disappeared behind moments before. Hermione scanned around, her eyes darting frantically every which way. The corridor was empty.
"Malfoy, if you're playing some game right now, this isn't funny!" Hermione stated angrily.
Hermione walked forward, keeping her eyes moving around continuously. She felt fear tingle up her spine. She knew that Draco wasn't currently around her, and the thought that she was alone in the open scared her. Normally, she wouldn't be scared, it was Hogwarts after all, the place felt like home. But after what had already happened to her when she had been left to patrol alone, her current predicament had her terrified.
She was about to turn and run back to her dorm, when a door on her right smashed open, and Draco came storming out, an angry look on his face.
Hermione's hand flew to her heart, which was racing uncontrollably. Letting out the breath that she realized she had been holding, Hermione then took in Draco's appearance. His clothes were all rumpled, and he looked angry.
"Malfoy? What happened?" Hermione asked.
"Peeves happened," Draco snapped angrily.
"What did he do?"
"Thought it would be bloody funny to lure me into the classroom so he could play a joke on me."
"How did he lure you into the classroom?"
"By making a bloody ruckess in there. I swear, it sounded like someone was having a fit and throwing things around."
"What joke did he play?"
"The classroom was a trap, the minute I walked in I was locked into a wooden cage and then was hanging up on the ceiling. Peeves was having a hay day, laughing and giggling about his masterpiece working like a little schoolgirl. Once he realized I was screaming at him, he realized just who he had trapped, and let me down."
"So what, you're trying to say that even the ghosts are afraid of you?"
"Just because Peeves is a ghost, doesn't mean he's an idiot Granger. He knows who I am, and knows my reputation. And when I so kindly reminded him that I was the Head Boy, and the things I was capable of doing with the position, he let me down, apologizing."
Hermione felt a giggle release through her lips, and she covered her mouth.
"You find that funny?" Draco snapped.
"I was just trying to picture you locked up in a wooden cage, helpless by a ghost, and I must say I did find the scenario rather amusing."
"I was not helpless Mudblood. I could have escaped easily."
"Whatever you say Malfoy," Hermione said sweetly before walking past him.
Draco scoffed and followed, making sure to make his way next to her. There was no way he was following Hermione Granger around the school like a lost puppy.
Hermione and Draco walked side by side in silence. They were rounding the last corridor when Hermione stopped in her tracks.
Draco who was already annoyed with her, turned to her and said "Why on earth are you stopping, we're almost done."
"Someone is here Malfoy" Hermione whispered quietly.
"What do you mean?" Draco asked, his eyebrows drawing together in confusion.
"I can feel it," Hermione said, her eyes looking around wildly.
"You can feel what?" Draco snapped, his patience lost.
"Draco, shut up!" Hermione snapped angrily.
Draco bit back a retort, but kept quiet; mostly in shock that Hermione had used his first name.
"The night I got attacked," Hermione started quietly, Draco had to strain his ears to hear what she was saying, "A feeling overcame me, and I knew that someone was watching me. I have that same feeling right now."
Draco straightened up, and looked around scanning their surroundings.
"I don't see anything," Draco whispered back.
"Neither do I, but I know he's here."
"Well, stick beside me and let's go," Draco said starting forward.
Hermione walked with Draco, as close as she could without physically touching him.
Ahead of them, a dark figure stepped out into the middle of the corridor. The persons face was completely covered, and they were in all black. Not an inch of their skin was exposed. Hermione felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, and goosebumps arose all over her arms.
As a reflex, Draco stepped in front of Hermione, shielding her from view.
"Get out of the way Malfoy, it's the girl I want," the man's voice hissed.
"Why?" Draco asked.
"It does not concern you. Now, step aside and hand her over."
"No," Draco stated boldly.
"You're a fool if you think you could take me on Draco, even with those gifts of yours."
Draco was shocked as to how this person knew about him and his special abilities, but made sure to keep his face clean of emotion.
"And you're a fool to try and attack the Head Boy and Girl in the middle of the corridor of Hogwarts," Draco said before raising his wand and letting out an explosion of fireworks that shot out from the end of his wand, making loud noises as they went off.
"You had your warning. Next time you try and protect the Mudblood I will not be so lenient on you. And I will be back, that much you can guarantee."
Before Draco could make a response, the figure disappeared in a cloud of smoke, leaving the corridor empty except for them, and Professor McGonagall and Snape who were running down the corridor towards them.
"What is the meaning of this?" McGonagall asked, as she waved her wand, making the fireworks disappear.
"Someone broke into the school and was going to try and attack me and the Head Girl. I needed a means of getting people's attention."
Dumbledore appeared behind the two Professors and said, "Ms. Granger, was it the same man who attacked you previously?"
"It was Professor Dumbledore, I am sure of it."
"I see. McGonagall, Snape, go and round up the other teachers, we are going to have to have a meeting. This is the second time that we have had an intruder amongst us and nothing has gone off to alert us of his appearance. He is clearly using some sort of dark magic that I am unaware of, or knows of some secret entrance that I do not, as unlikely as that is."
"Professor, he did say one more thing that I think you should be aware of," Hermione said speaking up, grabbing the attention of everyone.
"And what is that Ms. Granger?"
"That he will be back for me," Hermione said shivering.
"Albus, how can that be?" McGonagall asked, looking over at Hermione who was visibly shaken.
"I do not know Minerva, which is why we have to get to the bottom of this. I am glad that you and Mr. Malfoy listened and decided to patrol together, otherwise the situation would have turned out a lot differently. Mr. Malfoy, I want you to keep your eyes on Ms. Granger whenever you can. You are the Head Boy, and it is your responsibility to ensure that the students are safe, Ms. Granger here included. I do not want Ms. Granger walking around in the corridors unattended at any time, so either make sure she is accompanied by one of her friends, or I want you to walk her where she needs to be. It is utmost important that you make sure nobody is aware of your living arrangements now, as we do not know who can be trusted. Mr. Malfoy, please escort Ms. Granger and yourself back to your dorm room, you are finished patrolling for the night, and for the remainder of the school year until I tell you otherwise."
Hermione and Draco took off towards their dorm room together, leaving the three Professors behind.
"So it has been confirmed, the attack on Ms. Granger was personal. However, we still do not know why. We can only assume that is has something to do with Voldemort," Dumbledore stated.
"What would the Dark Lord want with Ms. Granger?" McGonagall asked.
"I do not know. But, he seems very intent on capturing her, which is why we must assure that it does not happen. I do not want Ms. Granger falling into the hands of the enemy, she is one of our greatest assets, something in which I know does not go unnoticed by Voldemort. As to why he wants her specifically, there are a million possibilities. One of my theories is to get to Harry. Voldemort knows Harry would do anything for his friends, and Hermione is the smartest witch of her generation, Harry relies on her more than anyone realizes. She's also an easier target, being Head Girl leaves her with less people around her, especially during patrolling, and being a girl who is not physically as strong compared to Harry or Ron, which is why I believe the attacker is using physical violence with her instead of magic."
"Well it is clear that your plan to keep Mr. Malfoy and Ms. Granger together has worked so far,"Snape said speaking up.
"What do you mean Severus?" McGonagall asked confused.
"Clearly Mr. Malfoy stuck by Ms. Granger's side, and did not let any harm come to her. We know that whoever this intruder is, he is a part of the Dark Lord's forces, and he clearly knows who Draco is and more than likely knows what he is capable of. It is good to have Ms. Granger and Mr. Malfoy in an alliance together as you have them Albus."
"I have a feeling that Mr. Malfoy is going to feel protective over Ms. Granger, and that she is going to start relying on him more than she will realize. I believe that putting these two together was one of my smarter ideas, as I believe that something good will come of this, especially considering the circumstances."
"Albus! You are not a matchmaker!" McGonagall snapped.
"If you can recall Minerva, I have helped a fair share of the strongest wizarding couples come together. Sometimes, all people need is a little push."
"This is Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy that we are talking about! The two could not be more different."
"Are they really that different? They are both the smartest students in this school, they both have values and beliefs that they believe is right, and they are both hot headed and stubborn, and would do anything to protect their friends."
"You're forgetting the fact that they completely hate one another," Minerva said, feeling as though she won the battle.
"If Mr. Malfoy truly hates Ms. Granger as much as he claims to, then why did he not hand her over?"
McGonagall pursed her lips, not being able to make a comment.
Dumbledore smiled, the twinkle in his eye sparkling.
"Now, let's go get all the other teachers and talk about increasing security around here," Dumbledore said.
Draco and Hermione walked back to their dorm room in silence. Draco chanced a look over at Hermione, as being quiet wasn't something he was accustomed to when it came to her. When he took in her facial expression, she looked vulnerable and scared, an emotion that he could honestly say he had never seen on her before. Although, he couldn't exactly blame her, the threat had been clear, that man was coming back after her, and was guaranteeing it.
Before he could stop himself, he said, "You okay?"
Hermione's head snapped over in his direction, confusion lighting up her features. She masked her emotions after a few seconds, but Draco, who was a master at masking feelings, knew she was putting up a front.
"I'm fine Malfoy," Hermione said sternly.
"Really? That's kind of hard to believe. Any sane person would not be okay with what just happened, but I mean hey, maybe you have some extra magical powers that I don't know about that makes you totally okay in messed up situations like the one we were just in," Draco said, pushing her.
"No, I'm just not weak. Things happen, you just have to learn to deal with them."
"Granger, stop trying to kid yourself. I understand that I'm your bloody enemy, but even I can't blame you for being upset or at least a little bit scared by what happened. If you try and act like you're okay then you're going to have a break down."
"I don't need you telling me how I should be feeling Malfoy. What, you want to hear that I'm scared out of my mind? Because I am. The Dark Lord has someone coming after me, trying to kidnap me or do merlin knows what, so yes, I am terrified. But is there anything I can do about it? No. I'm not even supposed to tell my best friends the whole story, and it's extremely hard for me to lie to them. Having to pretend that I'm staying in my dorm, and when nobody is looking, sneak my way back here, hoping that nobody sees. And the minute I tell them what happened, they are going to persist on being with me everywhere I go, and they can't because they can't know that I switched living quarters. So I pretty much have no choice but to keep this to myself, and continue to lie to them and pretend that everything is alright."
"Why don't you just tell them what you can? Tell them what happened, about what the guy said, all that junk. And when they insist on walking you back to your dorm, just tell them that they can't, that Dumbledore has requested that the Head Boy walk you to your dorm, that there is reasons behind it, but you can't tell them to ensure your own safety, and that they need to trust you and your judgment."
"Because I know they're not going to let the story drop there. They're going to want to know everything, especially when they hear that you're involved.."
"And that's when you use your best friend card. Tell them that if they are your best friends, that they will trust you, and accept what information you can give them. Hell, Just tell them you are just following the Headmasters rules they won't question it, being as loyal to the old coot as they are."
Hermione looked at Draco thoughtfully. "You know what, that might just work.." she said slowly.
"Obviously it's going to work, I'm the one who thought of it," Draco said straightening up, acting all tough.
"Whatever Malfoy, don't let it get to your head. You came up with one good idea, doesn't mean it's going to happen again."
"I would like to have you know that I come up with a lot of brilliant ideas, everyone else is just too dumb to comprehend what I am offering."
"I mean sure, if that's what helps you sleep at night."
Draco narrowed his eyes. "A small thank you would have sufficed Granger."
"You're right," Hermione said dejectedly. "Although I can't believe I am about to say this, thank you Malfoy."
"There, now was that so hard?" Draco asked mockingly as they approached their dorm room door. Draco stated the password, and the two of them walked in, the door closing shut behind them.
