Hermione lay in her bed, tossing and turning, not being able to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, all she could picture was the man standing in the hallway telling her that he would be back. She had hoped that if she thought about something happy before falling asleep, she would end up dreaming about it, but to no avail. Her dreams would turn into nightmares, and she would wake up in a cold sweat.
Deciding that she wasn't getting any sleep, Hermione headed for the shower, wanting to rinse herself clean of all of her nightmares. After rinsing herself thoroughly in hot water, she dried herself off and looked at the clock, 2am. Hermione huffed, and grabbed her warmest pajama's she could find. Even after having a hot shower, she still couldn't seem to warm herself up. She jumped back into bed, pulling her bed sheets up to her chin. Shivers wracked her whole body, and her teeth started chattering. Normally, Hermione would have grabbed her wand and used some sort of spell to warm herself up, but her thoughts were groggy, and all she could think about was how cold she was.
Draco awoke the following morning to the sound of his alarm. He groaned, wiping the sleep from his eyes. After stretching his entire body enough to wake it up, Draco grabbed a towel from his dresser, and headed to the shower. Seeing the door wide open, Draco walked in, and set his towel down on the sink. He cursed when he stepped in a cold puddle that was on the ground.
"Fucking Granger," he hissed as he turned the shower on, turning the nozzle until it was room temperature. Unlike Hermione, Draco didn't like to scorch his sensitive pale skin, and preferred having a room temperature shower. He took his time, figuring Hermione didn't need the bathroom anyways, since she seemed to have already had a shower before him.
When he stepped out, he grabbed his towel and ran it threw his hair a few times, taking out all of the excess water, before wrapping it around his waist. When he opened the door, he was surprised to see that the common room was empty. Usually Hermione was sitting in one of the couches reviewing the lesson for the day. Draco shrugged it off, figuring she decided to sleep in, and went to his room and threw on his Slytherin robes. He grabbed a little bit of gel, and ran it threw this hair, leaving it in a messy array. He grabbed his wand off of his nightstand and put it into his pocket, not that he necessarily needed it. He could do just as much without it. But, the majority of the classes required it.
When he headed back into the common room, confusion hit him. Hermione was still nowhere to be found, which was unlike her.
He felt an emotion set in that he wasn't accustomed to… panic.
Before he knew what he was doing, he was in front of her door, knocking on it. When there was no answer, his panic heightened, and he lifted his hand, palm facing the door, and used his wandless magic to unlock the door.
Draco squinted when he stepped into the room, as it was still dark. He could vaguely make out a shape in the bed, and let out the breath he hadn't realized he had been holding. He waved his hand around the room, and lights flickered to life.
His moment of relief was over, once he took in the state that Hermione was in.
She was as white as a sheet, her lips blue, and he could distinctly make out that she was shaking through all of the covers that she had over top of her. Draco walked around the side of the bed, and put his hand to her forehead. He was surprised to find that her head was extremely warm.
"Granger?"
"Granger, wake up."
"I can't believe I'm doing this again.." Draco mumbled before grabbing Hermione, still wrapped in her blanket, and cradled her in his arms.
He felt Hermione shift, and she curled herself into him, her face now placed against his chest.
Draco scowled down at her, but continued his trek to the Hospital Wing. Draco sighed when he turned a corner and spotted the Gryffindor's, who of course just happened to be using the same corridor as him.
"Oi! Put Hermione down!" Ron yelled angrily.
Draco stopped in his tracks.
"Weasley, get out of my way I don't have time for this right now."
"Put her DOWN!"
"I always knew you were daft Weasley, but seriously? Can you not see that she is unresponsive and not moving?"
"What did you do to her?" Ron hissed.
"Oh for fuck sakes, I didn't do anything! Now MOVE so I can get her to the hospital wing."
"I'll take her," Ron said walking up to grab Hermione out of Draco's arms.
Draco shifted out of the way, so Ron couldn't grab Hermione. "We've wasted enough time arguing, I could have already been at the Hospital Wing by now, getting her treated. Now, all of you, MOVE before I start deducting house points from each and every one of you!"
Everyone stepped aside, clearing a path. Draco started forward immediately, glaring menacingly at anyone who dared to look at him.
Ron was about to follow Draco, but Harry held his arm out, stopping him.
"What the hell Harry?" Ron asked confused.
"Let him go, if you distract him again it's going to take him even longer to get Hermione to the Hospital Wing, and from the way she looked, she needs to get there as fast as possible, not be held up because you and Malfoy are arguing in the halls."
"I still don't understand why he's taking her…"
"Because he found her like that you bloody idiot! You should be thanking him for taking Hermione to get help instead of leaving her to die. Merlin, boy's are so stupid!" Ginny huffed.
"He's probably the one that did it to her…" Ron said grumpily.
"Seriously Ron, you're an idiot. If Malfoy did it to her, do you honestly think he would be taking her to the Hospital Wing? And do you seriously think that Malfoy would be able to pull a fast one on Hermione like that?"
"I still want to know what the hell happened, and why Malfoy feels it's his duty to take care of her all of a sudden!" Ron exclaimed, jealously and contempt apparent in his voice.
"You lost all rights to knowing what happened to Hermione, and who she is involved with the minute that you cheated on her," Ginny snapped angrily.
"Malfoy and Hermione and involved?" Ron asked disgustedly.
"Of course they're not. But that's not the point," Ginny stated. "If you truly care about Hermione, then you will let Malfoy take her to go and get the help that she requires, and then go and visit her one she's taken care of. And then we can get to the bottom of what happened."
"Ginny's right Ron. As much as I don't like the fact that Malfoy is the one taking her to the hospital wing, we have to let him do it. You saw the state she was in, she looked horrible. And also, it has to be something serious for Malfoy to carry Hermione to the Hospital Wings in his arms where he knew he could be spotted by just about anyone," Harry said softly.
"I still don't like the thought of that git's hands on her."
"Neither do I, but there's nothing that we can do about it," Harry stated, ending the conversation.
Draco threw the doors to the Hospital Wing open, and Madame Pomfrey came out cursing until she took in the scene in front of her.
Draco Malfoy holding a unconscious, yet very ill looking Hermione Granger.
"Come in, come in, set her down on one of those beds over there, and let me take a look at her."
Draco gently placed Hermione on the bed and stepped back as Madame Pomfrey set in to do her work. He didn't even think about leaving, knowing Madame Pomfrey would just tell him to stay anyways, so he made himself comfortable leaning against a wall, his arms crossed.
"Mr. Malfoy, it was good that you brought Ms. Granger in when you did. She is quite ill."
"What's wrong with her?"
"I'm not entirely certain yet. All I know that this is something that wasn't picked up by somebody else. Her body just seems to have shut down."
Draco scoffed, stupid Granger. When did she ever give up and let herself shut down? She was a bloody nuisance and was a pain in his existence; it wasn't like her to allow something like this to happen. She must have been a lot more affected by the events then what she had let on. Draco knew that much. But clearly by putting up her tough front that she did, it was turning around to bite her in the ass. Under normal circumstances Draco would have been happy to see Hermione get what was coming to her, but even this was a bit much for him. Hell, make her fail a class or something, Draco would die to see that day. The look on her face would be priceless. But to have to experience the things that she was currently dealing with, he wouldn't wish that on anybody.
"Anyways, her fever seems to be dropping, but I need to keep her here for a few hours so I can monitor her progress, and I would also like to speak with her when she wakes up. So you can go-"
"No, I'll stay," Draco stated as he grabbed a chair and sat down. He pretended he didn't see the shock that crossed Madame Pomfrey's face at his decision.
"Very well then, since you are going to stay here with her, I am going to go and inform Albus about her condition. Can I trust you not to do anything while I'm gone?"
"Seriously, if I wanted to kill her, I wouldn't have brought her here," Draco spat tiredly.
"Mr. Malfoy I was not-"
"Save it, I don't care what you have to say really. I'm not going to lay a hand on her, so go about doing whatever it is you have to do. The Head Girl will still be in once piece by the time you get back."
Madame Pomfrey bit back a retort, and turned on her heels and left the Hospital Wing, shutting the doors behind her.
Draco let out an irritated breath. This was exactly how he had planned on spending his morning, in the hospital babysitting Hermione Granger, once again. He didn't really have a choice; Dumbledore had made it pretty clear that he was to be at her side whenever nobody else was around. Draco sneered at the floor. He couldn't believe the old man had thought taking care of the Gryffindor princess was his responsibility. She had more bloody friends than he did, why couldn't she get one of her annoying sidekick twats to babysit her 24/7. He knew they wouldn't mind it, hell they would probably enjoy it.
"Mal..foy."
Draco's head snapped up and turned in the direction the voice had came from. He was surprised to see that Hermione was awake.
"What the hell is wrong with you Granger?" Draco snapped.
"I don't know," Hermione said softly.
"Well you need to bloody well figure it out. I'm sick and tired of having to carry your ass around places."
Draco saw hurt flash in Hermione's eyes, and felt a moment of guilt, before pushing it away angrily. He did not care if he hurt her feelings, she was a Mudblood after all.
"You're awake!" Madame Pomfrey exclaimed as she and Dumbledore entered the Hospital Wing. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine," Hermione stated as strongly as she could, glancing over at Draco for a split second as she said it.
"You are far from okay Ms. Granger. I had to use a variety of different potions just to get your body temperature and movements back under control. Are you feeling nauseous or light headed at all?"
"I assure you, I'm fine. I just didn't really get any sleep last night, and I must have been coming down with a cold or something."
"Well regardless of what the cause was, you will not be attending classes today. You need to get some rest. Your body needs it."
"But what about-"
"This is non negotiable Ms. Granger. Professor Dumbledore and me have already spoken, and he agrees that what's best for you right now is rest."
Hermione hung her head in defeat.
"I know how important classes are to you, so I have informed all of yours and Mr. Malfoy's teachers that you are not going to be present, and they have arranged to have all of the lessons and homework sent up to your rooms," Dumbledore stated.
"I'm missing class too?" Draco questioned.
"I do not want Ms. Granger being left alone in her state. I want you to keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn't overexert herself in her efforts to stay on top of her classes. What she needs is rest, and right now that is more important than anything. We need her back to perfect health."
"Fan-bloody-tastic."
"Mr. Malfoy, if you would escort Ms. Granger back to her dormitory."
Draco stood up, and waited for Hermione to get one final checkup before she walked over towards him. Without saying a word, Draco turned and left the Hospital Wing. Hermione followed after him.
"I'm sorry that you're missing class Malfoy."
"Whatever."
"Are you really that mad about missing classes or is something else bugging you?" Hermione questioned.
"I'm annoyed that I have to play babysitter with you, when there are other things I could be doing with my time, like going to classes," Draco said stonily.
"Do you think this is what I want?" Hermione questioned, her jaw tense. "You think I want to sit around and miss classes, and have to always be shadowed by someone because some random Death Eater is out to get me? Do you think I planned for all of this to happen? Because trust me Malfoy, if there was any way I could change this whole situation then I would."
Draco felt as though he had been slapped.
"Granger, I-"
"Save it Malfoy, I've had enough of your comments for one day. Let's go back to our common room so I can lock myself in my room and not bother you anymore."
"That's not what I meant-"
"It's exactly what you meant. Who are you trying to kid? Why would you want to waste your time 'babysitting' a Mudblood?"
Draco cringed at her words.
Hermione walked ahead, and Draco made sure to keep within a close distance, leaving her enough space so they weren't within arms reach of one another. Hermione muttered the password, and walked straight to her room, slamming the door behind her.
Draco stood staring at her door, wondering how the hell he had gotten himself into this mess in the first place.
Once inside her room, Hermione threw herself onto her bed and let out a frustrated sigh. She looked over at her desk, and saw the promised homework and assignments that Dumbledore had told her would be sent up to her. Hermione wanted to get up and do her homework, but she felt so physically drained, she couldn't find the strength to get up. So instead, she laid down and sighed as her head hit her soft pillow, and within seconds she was in a deep sleep.
Draco had been surprised that Hermione had done what she said she was going do, and that was lock herself in her room all day. He had expected her to come out of her room after a couple of hours, feisty and ready for an argument as to how she shouldn't have to lock herself in her room, that this was a place the two of them shared and she ad every right to do what she wanted there as he did.
He had to admit, he was actually looking forward to that argument. It was a form of entertainment, and he liked seeing Hermione all riled up. Her eyes would light up with a dangerous spark, her cheeks would flush red, and Draco actually liked seeing her that way.
Draco had gotten so bored, that he had actually even completed all of his homework and wrote out all of his notes from the lessons from that day. Not that Draco was the type of person who didn't care about that kind of thing, because he did. He just didn't usually waste a day working on it. He looked at the time and realized it was time for dinner. He had skipped lunch, as Hermione had decided to stay in her room, and he didn't feel like bugging her. Dinner however, he was not missing. He was too damn hungry from missing lunch.
He stood up, walked over to her room, and knocked on the door. When there was no response, Draco unlocked the door with his hand again, and went inside. He found Hermione fast asleep, curled up on top of her covers. He walked up to the side of her bed, and looked down at her sleeping face.
When Hermione was sleeping, she was a sight to be seen. He had never seen her so at peace, with not an inch of hate or disdain on her features. She looked so innocent, and Draco hated to admit it, but she looked beautiful.
He conjured a blanket with his hand, and placed it over Hermione. She automatically snuggled into it and let out a content sigh, and Draco found that a smile made it's way onto his features. He then realized just who he was smiling at, and snapped out of his reverie, and left her room, shutting the door quietly behind him. Living with Hermione must have been getting to his head. When would he ever think that she looked beautiful, and why the hell did he smile when she snuggled into the blanket he had put over it. Hell, why did he even give her a blanket in the first place?
Draco shook his head, whisking away his thoughts. He ripped off a piece of his parchment, and scribbled Hermione a note saying that he was heading to dinner and would be back soon. He was hoping that if she got up and read his note, she would stay in their dorm and not walk to the Great Hall unattended. If anything happened to her, he would be in supreme shit, as she was pretty much his responsibility.
Before leaving, he looked towards her room one last time. Making sure there was no movement from the other side, he left the dorm, making sure the door shut and locked behind him.
Draco entered the Great Hall, and felt eyes on him from the Gryffindor table. He looked over, and met the eyes of Harry, Ron and Ginny, who were all looking at him intently. He raised and eyebrow at them, turned his attention away from them, then headed to the Slytherin table, where he was greeted by Blaise.
"Hey mate, you okay?"
"Of course I'm okay, what would make you ask?" Draco questioned.
"Because you weren't in any classes today, and you didn't show up for lunch."
"I didn't realize that you were keeping such close tabs on me," Draco drawled amused.
"I also noticed that Hermione didn't show up for class or lunch. Is everything okay?"
Draco scowled in annoyance. Of course that was what Blaise was worried about. "She's fine, she just came down with some sort of sickness and was told to take the day off to get better."
"And you stayed with her?"
"I didn't have a choice in the matter. The old coot told me I had stay with her and pretty much babysit her," he snapped.
"You should really refrain from missing meals mate, you get very.. bitchy."
"I do not get bitchy!"
"Fine, you get miserable and grumpy."
"I do not," Draco stated.
"Yes, you do."
"Zabini.." Draco started warningly.
"Do us all a favour and eat something, you're always irritable when you're hungry."
Draco narrowed his eyes at Blaise, but grabbed an assortment of different food items that had appeared on the table in front of them.
Draco dove into his food with a fiery, realizing then just how hungry he was. Blaise watched him with an amused look on his face.
Once Draco had slowed down and put down his utensils, Blaise spoke up again. "So, how are you feeling?"
"Better."
"I told you that you're grouchy when you're hungry."
"Shut up Zabini."
Blaise smirked.
"As much fun as this has been, I have to get back to my dorm. I left Granger in bed asleep unattended, and I don't want to push my luck."
"Have fun!" Blaise shouted at his retreating figure.
Draco stuck up his middle finger in response, which had Blaise howling in laughter.
When Draco entered his common room, he could see that Hermione had still not moved. His note was exactly where he had left it. He opened her door and peeked his head inside, and saw that she was still fast asleep.
Draco shut her bedroom door, and went and flopped on one of the couches that were in their dorm. He closed his eyes and let his body relax. His eyes snapped open when he heard Hermione's door open.
Draco sat up, and saw Hermione standing in her doorway in her pajama's.
"Should I be saying good morning? Goodnight, or good afternoon?" Draco asked smirking.
"What time is it?" Hermione inquired.
Draco grabbed his wand, waved it, and green numbers hung in the air, displaing the time. "According to my built in clock, it says it's quarter to eight."
Hermione's eyes opened wide and her mouth hung open.
"At night?!"
"No, in the morning. Of course at night."
"Why didn't you wake me up?!"
"I tried to, but you were dead to the world."
"Ohhh.." Hermione said slowly.
Draco just raised an eyebrow, and continued to watch her.
"Did you by any chance bring anything back here to eat?" Hermione asked grabbing her stomach.
"No."
"Alright," Hermione said turning back into her room.
"Where are you going?" Draco asked.
"To get dressed," Hermione stated before shutting the door.
She came out a few minutes later in jeans and a sweater, her robe thrown over her clothes.
"And may I ask where you think you are going?" Draco asked nosily.
"We are going to go and get some food."
"And how exactly do you plan on doing that? Dinner ended nearly 3 hours ago."
"I'm going to the kitchens."
"That's impossible Granger, nobody knows where the entrance to the kitchen is."
"I do."
Draco quirked an eyebrow, intrigued, yet somewhat impressed.
"And where is this secret entrance?"
"You'll just have to come with me and find out. "
"It's not like I have a choice.."
Draco saw Hermione's jaw tense.
"But, I am intrigued as to see if you actually know where this entrance is, so let's go. Lead the way Granger."
Draco felt relieved when he saw Hermione's jaw loosen, and determination flare up in her eyes.
"Let's go."
Draco and Hermione walked through the halls without getting caught. He had to admit, Hermione was quiet good at getting around the school quickly and quietly, and she seemed to know exactly where she was going. Draco was hoping that she had been bluffing about knowing where the kitchens were. He had tried to find it multiple times throughout his years here, and had not been successful.
Hermione walked up to a painting, and Draco stood behind her looking at her intently.
"Here it is," Hermione stated, as she turned around to look at Draco with a look of triumph on her face.
"Granger, that's a portrait of fruit…"
"I know what it is Malfoy, but it's also the entrance to the kitchen."
Draco looked at her quizzically before walking up to the portrait to inspect it.
"And how exactly does this portrait get us into the kitchens? Is there a secret button on it or something? I've been through these hallways a million times trying to find the kitchens, and I've never been able to find it."
Draco felt around the portrait, and when he couldn't find anything he took a step back frustrated.
"You're just messing with me aren't you?" He asked annoyed.
"I'm actually not, this is the entrance to the kitchens."
"Prove it then," Draco stated, crossing his arms.
"It's quite easy actually," Hermione said as she stepped towards the portrait. "All you have to do is tickle the pear."
"What?"
"You tickle the pear," Hermione said simply. "Here, come watch."
Draco stepped up beside her, and watched as she did exactly that. She tickled the pear, and it laughed, before turning into a doorknob.
Draco's eyes widened in disbelief.
Hermione turned and looked at him and said "See?"
She grabbed the doorknob and turned it, and the door swung open. Hermione walked in, and Draco followed behind her.
Hermione walked into the kitchen, and Draco followed her, looking around in both amazement and distain. He couldn't believe that she had found the entrances to the kitchens, and he hadn't.
"Can Dobby get Miss Hermione anything to eat?"
"Yes Dobby, what do you have?"
"Oh Dobby can get anything that the Miss wants."
"Thanks Dobby. Just a ham and cheese sandwich would suffice."
Dobby nodded, and went to the kitchen, and came back with a handful of different things.
"Dobby grabbed a few different things for you Miss."
"Thanks Dobby," Hermione said smiling down at him.
Dobby smiled and bowed down to her before noticing Draco. His eyes flew wide open and he grabbed a kitchen knife.
"Watch out Miss Hermione, Dobby will protect you!"
Hermione looked at Dobby and then at Draco. "No, no, Dobby, it's okay, he's with me," she said soothingly, her arms out.
Dobby looked at Hermione, and then lowered the knife.
"Miss Hermione is with Mr. Malfoy?"
"He's not here to hurt you Dobby, he's helping me out."
Dobby leaned in close to Hermione and said, "Are you sure you're okay Miss? Dobby can poke him a few times to teach Mr. Malfoy a lesson."
"I can hear you," Draco stated.
Dobby looked around Hermione at Draco and glared at him.
"Dobby, it's okay, I'm okay. Malfoy is helping me out. Dumbledore's orders."
Dobby straightened up. "Well Dobby likes Professor Dumbledore very much, and if he says it's okay, then Dobby says it's okay too."
"Glad to know you approve," Draco said rolling his eyes.
"Mr. Malfoy had better take good care of Miss, or Dobby will hurt him."
"He is taking good care of me Dobby."
"Good," Dobby said nodding his head and crossing his arms across his chest.
"Anyways, thank you for the food Dobby. Let's keep this encounter between us okay? Malfoy is keeping me safe, and I don't want Harry or Ron knowing that we came here together okay?"
"Dobby will not tell anyone of this Miss, unless Miss tells him otherwise."
"Thank you Dobby," Hermione giving him a hug, as best as she could with her one arm full of food.
Dobby blushed.
"Miss must come and visit Dobby again soon!"
"I will Dobby!" Hermione said as her and Draco left the kitchens, the door turning back into the painting as they exited.
"Bloody house elves," Draco said shaking his head.
Hermione ignored his comment.
"I told you I knew where the kitchens were."
"Well congratulations Granger." Draco stated annoyed.
"Well you're welcome for me showing you where it is."
"I could have found it on my own." Draco stated.
"Righhht, cause you were doing such a great job of finding it before."
Draco shot her a nasty look before turning away.
Hermione let out a sigh, shaking her head.
"Let's get back to our dorm so I can see what all Dobby found for me, I'm starving."
Hermione started walking, and Draco walked beside her, the two of them making it back to their dorms without running into any students or teachers.
Hermione headed towards the couch as soon as they got back to their dorm, and laid all the food Dobby had gotten for her on the coffee table. She smiled when she spotted the ham sandwich she had asked for, and bit into it, her mouth watering and stomach rumbling at finally having food.
Draco sat on a couch opposite of her, and watched Hermione as she ate her sandwich. She was in absolute bliss over the simplicity of such an easy meal. He eyed the rest of the food that was on the table, wondering what else the house elf had gotten for her.
Hermione saw Draco looking at the food, and said, "Go ahead and take anything that you would like."
"I'm fine Granger," Draco stated looking away from the table.
"Suit yourself, but I am not going to eat it all, and it's not like the food is poisoned."
Draco let out a defeated sigh and grabbed the first thing that was within reach, a bright red apple. He bit into it, and felt an explosion of sweet juice fill his mouth.
Hermione smiled, and finished her sandwich. She grabbed a candy bar off the table, and stood up.
"Whatever else you want, you can have. I'm going to go and work on the lessons and homework from the day."
Draco nodded, and watched as Hermione entered her room, shutting the door behind her.
