Chapter 12
After he and Hermione took the cups of tea his mum sent to the table once they had taken a seat, Ron said, “We received a letter from Harry.” It was after work, so both of them came over not only to eat, as it was their normal night to do so, but to fill her in so she could pass it along.
“What does he say?” Molly asked, tending to the food, but glancing back at the two with a smile. They would send their own letter off the following day inviting them to another dinner.“Nothing much, honestly,” Hermione told her with shake of her head after sipping her tea. “The only bit which really stands out is he said he was taken from Privet Drive all those years ago. Of course, he doesn't say by who or what happened after, just that he was. Then he makes it real clear he doesn't want to talk about any of it.”“It's real blunt there,” Ron told his mum with a grumble in his voice.Brow furrowed, Molly took in what was said then told them, “Well, I suppose it makes sense if it was something traumatizing. Does he say when Remus and Sirius found him?”“Nothing more than that,” Ron sighed. Then he added, quietly, “He doesn't want to talk about any of it from what he says. One of the other bits he makes clear is he's changed, a lot. From what he writes, it's clear he won't go back to doing what we were. The reason there I understand; the danger. He knows what danger he's in. Sirius and Remus will go with him wherever he goes. At least that's what he says. When it gets worse, something he says he knows is coming, he won't go anywhere without a paid bodyguard.”“It makes sense, Ron,” Molly told him, spelling the spoons to keep stirring what was cooking then coming over to take a seat at the table with a soft groan. “If he knows even some of what's going on, he has to realize when it comes out he's back he'll be in plenty of danger. If they've heard anything at all, something I'm sure they have, they have to know the basics of what's going on. The second it comes out to everyone he's back, he'll have plenty looking to do him harm.”“Understand there,” Ron told her. Quietly, he added, “My letter says he does want to reconnect as he missed us, but it can't be the same as it was. There are bits he can't and won't do then areas he won't discuss. Not sure how I feel about that.” With a shake of his head, he added, “He sounds a bit miffed, even in writing, about me mentioning his clothes and such, making it right clear he pays for them.”“You've all changed, Ron,” Molly told her son softly. “When it comes to you, Hermione and your other friends, it was just so gradual you didn't notice because you were around each other all the time as it happened. Harry wasn't around. You remember him one way. Then someone much older and different returned. Well, you remember the Dursleys, and how they were towards Harry. If Remus and Sirius stepped in at some point, something obvious, they probably helped undo plenty. And had plenty to work on. It's a good thing he did change, honestly. He needed to because of how he was raised.”“I know,” Ron admitted with a sigh in his voice. “It's just strange is all. The Harry we knew isn't there anymore, honestly. At least that we can see. He has a new look, way about him, friends, all of it. I mean, bloody hell, he acts like he's gay or something! The way he dresses, his hair, all of it, is the sort you see from those kind of blokes.”“The term is metrosexual,” Hermione told him. “It means they seem that way because of their looks and dress, but they aren't. It's just a way of taking care of themselves. With how Harry used to look and dress, it's not surprising he swung completely to the other end of the spectrum. And if his friends, the ones we heard on the phone, are the same way, it's probably where he picked it up.” As he talked, she looked at her own letter from Harry, huffing a little.Honestly? She wasn't sure what to expect from Harry after the dinner, as it was apparent he changed plenty, but her letter was a tad blindsiding. It was almost as though he was getting huffy with her over some of it, making it clear he didn't like what was said. Yes, well, that was fine. She planned to let him have it and get the answers she wanted from him when it came to so much. It was something she'd manage, just going to take time.“Don't care what the term is for it, still bloody strange,” Ron groused, shaking his head. Then he asked, “Right, how are we going to do this? I mean, Harry was our friend and I want him back the way it was before he was taken. Just not sure how to manage. He's—well, the Harry we knew wouldn't have said he wouldn't talk about something or some of the other bits. Not sure how to go about it this way since we don't deal with anything like it.”Before Hermione could chime in, Molly coached, “Start small. You can't pick up like you just saw him yesterday, Ron. Many years have passed since he was around. Maybe jump in with filling him in on areas he's missed, like what's happened with all the people he knew and basic events starting with in school then go from there. If you go about it that way, you might get more answers rather than just going about it the way you have been. Between your letters, Albus and us having them around, it'll be easier to connect and understand so much.”“Yes,” Hermione agreed with a nod, though she planned to ensure Harry understood she wasn't happy with being left to worry about him for so long. It wasn't right he had when he obviously wasn't in danger after Remus and Sirius found him, if that's what happened. Either way, he would hear it from her. Information—she would manage that as well.“It's just—not sure what I expected, but this isn't it from him. The old Harry I could understand and would be able to deal with. This Harry is like a stranger. I mean, the rest of us haven't changed as much as he has.”“I think we've all changed more than we realize, Ron, especially you lot,” Molly told her son with a smile. “You just don't see it. Harry's changes are more the outward sort while most of you just have experienced the inner kind. Give it time. It'll take a while to grow used to it, nothing more.”Then, standing with a groan, she went back to cooking. Since this was the night the whole family came home for dinner, it was busier than normal, so it took more work. As she went back to preparing the food, she asked more about what was in the letters. If she knew, she could not only help them, but pass along what she felt Albus needed to know to him. After all, their help was needed, even if it was just a little.
“Fuck,” Sirius muttered, shaking his head and stroking his goatee as he read through Albus' letter. It had come in the batch of mail they received just before dinner and Remus took on reading it before he did. He was just now seeing it. Looking around, making sure Harry hadn't come up from the swimming pool, he then sighed and said, “Not at all subtle with some of this, was he?” While they'd tell Harry about the letter, he wanted some of this worked out before they did. The nightmare the night before told both of them the stress was already getting to the youngest of them.
“On some, no,” Remus admitted with a groan. “The information we need, honestly, though I doubt it's everything. Then there is the bit with needing help. That's right clear. The rest—he was sneakier about. It's fishing for information, no doubt. We now just have to figure out how to handle parts of it. While we won't help, we don't want to alienate him either as we may need him at some point for parts, such as information.”“Which means we have to tread carefully,” Sirius grumbled. “Right,” he started, tossing the letter back in front of Remus, “let's say we do want the information, but we need to make it clear we can't and won't help. Tell him because of the business, we have to stay neutral. I think that's the best way to handle it. It should be something he'll understand. Don't come out and lie saying its part of the contract or anything like that, but make it clear we can't help the Order. The rest—we ignore, completely. And keep ignoring until he comes straight out with it.”“Good way to handle it,” Remus agreed, jotting down basic notes. “I'm going to add we're making it clear Harry is not to end up pulled in and we're protecting him more than ourselves from this. Then I'll add the bit about bodyguards and everything else we have in place that will end up public. The next bit I'll add is we know Harry is in more danger than we are, so we're taking it seriously then I'll poke for more information on it. Let's see what he gives up. I'm sure he won't be happy with me not taking the bait with parts, but I'm not. And I won't until it comes to the point I can't ignore it because he's so overt.”“Which I'm sure is coming since we aren't taking the bait,” Sirius groused, slouching down in his chair then sipping at his beer. “Nothing we do or say will deter him in this. Since we're around, he's going to try to pull us in, especially Harry.”“Oh yes,” Remus agreed with a mirthless chuckle and shake of his head. “I'm also going to add, hoping to deter parts, we've been back only about a fortnight, to give us time to adjust before delving in. I'm not sure it'll put him off, but we can hope.”“It won't, what with all we know of Albus,” Sirius sighed. “We just keep putting it off until we can't anymore. I'm sure he's going to work several routes to get what he wants here, so this isn't all we have to worry about. All we can do is what we're planning; putting him off and ignoring.”“I'll add in we're busy right now with all we have to work on, something which is the truth,” Remus tossed out there, making more notations. “Won't get into all we have to do, but it will be enough that it makes it quite clear we're tied up. Will also mention we're staying in as much as we can to hold off being revealed. So far we've managed and want to ensure it stays that way. It's something I'm sure he'll understand.”“Won't matter to him,” Sirius snorted, rolling his eyes. Finishing off his beer, he vanished the empty then summoned another. “You know him, Remus. No matter what we say, he's going to try to get what he wants. Albus isn't used to someone telling him no and sticking to it. In an area this big? He's not going to take no for an answer. All he's going to do is change tracks and go about it another way.”“And we stick to our stance and just shift with him,” Remus told him. “We can keep right on going until it's just at the point we have to come out with what we know.”“Bet that's coming sooner than later as well,” Sirius told him. “Just hoping to hold it off for now.”“I'll spin him in all the circles I can. It's something I can manage for a while. Let me see what he keeps coming up with to know what I'm doing,” Remus assured Sirius. After jotting down a couple more notes, Remus looked at Sirius then his brow furrowed. Sirius looked exhausted, all there was to it. “Are you fine?” He asked as gently as he could. Last time they saw this look from Sirius was a bout of insomnia brought on by the nightmares which were so frequent.“Tired and stressed,” Sirius told him honestly, slouching down with a groan.“The work part or the personal causing it?” Remus asked, though he assumed it was both.“Both then you toss in the shit from Albus, worrying about the other side, hoping like hell Skeeter doesn't dig up we're back for a bit and you have the whole thing,” Sirius sighed, eyes going shut and head dropping forward. “It'll settle, just give me some time.” He then added softly.“The nightmares? Are they back?” Remus asked. While it was to know, he also wanted to prepare. Harry's they could handle easily. While the youngest of them grabbed his wand, he didn't tend to use it or level it in their direction, just using it more for a form of comfort. Sirius was a whole other matter. He would level it at you and there were times he had cast spells. Just as bad was he would also take a swing at you if he couldn't immediately grab his wand. Neither were good.“Yes,” Sirius admitted, though softly. “Not as bad as they were when we first left, but they're there. I'm sure they'll grow worse until we're damned sure we're as safe as we can manage.”“I'll get the elves to setting up the potions lab like we discussed and brew up some sleep aids,” Remus said, already focusing on that. If Sirius admitted they were there, he was sure they were worse than he was saying. Between him and Harry, they'd probably need both and he wasn't chancing going out to buy them.“Might be for the best,” Sirius agreed, though grudgingly. He knew how bad the nightmares could end up and didn't want it reaching that point as it would just make all of this harder than what it already was. With all they had to worry about, he sure didn't need exhausted and overly stressed added into the mix.“They'll have it done quickly,” Remus assured him, planning to make certain they did and that he had all the ingredients he needed to tend to brewing. Those were easy enough and just an owl order away. As he jotted down notes, he glanced at Sirius and the beer he was holding. With a sigh, knowing it wouldn't end up taken well, he added as gently as he could, “Don't go overboard with the beer, Sirius. You know it aggravates the situation. It relaxes you, we all know it does, but it fuels the nightmares, as we learned long ago.”“I'm trying,” Sirius told him honestly. “Limiting myself to the number I can have each night then going from there. Definitely not getting drunk. I know what happens when I do that.”“It's best you don't,” Remus told him firmly, though making sure he kept his voice soft. “We don't need you accidentally blasting something apart again. It hasn't happened in quite some time, but we know this stress is as bad as it was when you were on the run.”“Something I realize as well,” Sirius assured him. “I'll keep it under control the best I can and deal other ways. Let me just find something that works.”“We'll do some bits together and have fun. It should help,” Remus suggested. With a snort and grin, he added, “I'm doing Harry's hair tomorrow night. It should be good for several laughs as I'm clueless about adding color to anyone's hair. He's walking me through the procedure, of course, but still...”“Oh, this should be a right riot,” Sirius told him with a huge grin, shoulders already shaking at the humor which would come from this.“I'm sure it'll end up rather riotous. Which means, we can't do without your commentary and help while I fumble around, making a fool of myself,” Remus told him, smiling just a tad. This was normal for them when it came to some areas, so he never took it badly. Besides, it always ended up rather funny.“Of course,” Sirius told him with a huge grin. “We'll have fun like we always do.”“Exactly,” Remus agreed, smiling a little bigger. “Harry swears he won't become upset if I mess up his hair, but I need help in doing this as it's the first time. The instructions, from what I saw, are rather straight forward, but I'd prefer you assisting when it comes to reading while I apply the whatever.”“Easily done and will critique while you do,” Sirius assured him, still grinning.“Another not unanticipated addition,” Remus told him with a soft chuckle. “In the end, we'll manage to make it look good. Might not be up to what his girlfriends do as they are plenty experienced, but it'll look nice.”“We'll muddle through as we always have,” Sirius told him, still grinning. Yeah, this was something to look forward to as they always had fun when they did these sorts of new bits. Might not turn out exactly right, but it was a riot while doing it!Sirius then vanished the beer bottle after draining the last of it. Though he wanted another, he wouldn't. He really did need to limit how much he drank for more reasons than what Remus mentioned. With a sigh, he summoned a butterbeer then said, “What do you say we join Harry for a time. Neither of us are big on the lounging bit, but I'm sure, if he's not on the phone, we can talk him into a couple games in the pool. Not only will we have fun, it'll make all of us sleep better.”“A good plan,” Remus nodded, sending his notes off and standing with a soft groan. This would be fun.
“Harry has changed, hasn't he?” Albus muttered as he went through the copies of the letters Harry had sent to Hermione and Ron. “Before he was taken, he wouldn't have said such bits.” What he was doing was looking through them for information and to get a feel for Harry's personality from them to judge what he was dealing with.
“Quite a bit from the sound of it,” Molly agreed. Then she added, “Ron and Hermione are both rather upset by some of it. They mentioned parts, but you could tell they didn't like some of what he said.”“It's understandable he did,” Arthur added. “And good. I'm sure some of this has to do with touchy topics. It's better he makes it clear he doesn't want to talk about it than doing so and it causing problems. After all, we don't know who took him or what happened from there. And the rest—the Harry I remember needed more confidence and backbone. We know he had a stubborn streak and such, but this is far better than that poor boy he was.”“Very true,” Albus agreed as he continued to read, though he didn't feel that way completely. A very strong independent Harry would make what he needed all the harder to attain. As it was, he was certain dealing with Remus and Sirius on the matter would end up bad anyway and he'd have to wiggle around them. What he didn't need was Harry making it worse. “In the end, they'll manage. It's just blindsiding when it comes to the changes, nothing more. They'll adjust and go on.”After finishing the letters, he pushed them back to Molly then relaxed in his chair with a tired groan. “I'm corresponding with them, so I'll ensure they're filled in on some areas. You might want to as well. While I'm working on getting information, you might be than me at managing as they aren't as likely to be as much on guard. It's a touchy dance with them, I do understand, but we need their help in so many ways. They might only be three people, but it can make all the difference in the world to what's going on.”“We're going to invite them to another dinner this weekend. This time we're going to ensure Harry doesn't have plans ahead of time. Then we'll go from there.” Molly told him with a smile.“We're also going to limit who's here this time. Everyone was around for the last dinner as they all wanted to see them. This time we're going to stick with the ones Harry knew in school so they don't feel so overwhelmed.” Arthur told him. “We thought that best. As they get used to it, we'll go back to everyone when they are available. And we plan to make sure Ron and Hermione have some time alone with Harry. After all, they were so close in school and want to talk to their friend in more than letters.”“A wise plan,” Albus agreed with a nod and smile. “Once they are used to it, we can press on with some from the Order joining them. I'm sure Tonks would love to meet her cousin and get to know him. The same with the others. With all that's going on, they can help protect them if they need it. It's best to get to know each other before that has to happen.”“Something we'll bring up to them,” Molly nodded. “I don't see where they'll take it badly.”“Let's see what happens before we press too much,” Arthur told the two. “We don't want them angry, after all. Best to go slow with this.”“Well, yes, it is, but some areas are rather urgent,” Albus told him. With the time frame he had, he did need to get this moving. However, he'd work on his end and let the Weasleys go at their pace. In the end, it would come out how he wanted. He then danced away from that topic to ask Arthur about some areas in the Ministry and what he might have heard. It was best to keep his ear to the ground on part of it so he knew what was coming. The more he knew, the better he could deal with so much.
