Hermione grabbed the stack of papers that had been left for her and sat down on her bed, her papers on her lap. She had left her lessons long enough, and there was no way she was going to class tomorrow with incomplete notes.
She threw herself into her studies, momentarily forgetting about what was going on in the world around her. She dropped her quill and pushed her notes away from her, and let out a sigh. Hermione felt relief wash over her and a small smile made its way onto her face. She was happy that she finished her lessons, and was once again on top of her notes and classes.
Hermione looked over at the time, and was shocked to see that it was nearly 2am. She knew that she shouldn't be tired because of all the sleep that she had during the day, but a wave of exhaustion hit her, and Hermione found herself using her wand to move all of her schoolwork onto her desk. She changed her clothes magically, configuring her pajamas onto herself. She then used whatever strength she had left to maneuver herself under the covers before falling asleep.
Draco woke the following morning and groaned. He hated mornings. As much as he just wanted to stay in bed for the day, he knew he had to get up and get moving, especially after missing classes yesterday. He got up and showered, then put his school robes on. He headed out to the common room that him and Hermione shared, and waited for her.
After waiting for about five minutes, his patience completely gone, he went over and knocked on Hermione's door. He heard her groan and mumble something unintelligible.
"Granger? Are you still in bed?"
Draco heard shuffling and then a thunk.
"No!" Hermione squeaked.
"What the hell is going on in there?"
"Nothing! I'm just grabbing my books."
"Well hurry up. The last thing we need is to go to classes late after missing yesterday. And I actually want some breakfast!"
"I'm coming!" Hermione yelled through the door.
Draco smirked as he listened to Hermione scrambling around her room hastily in a frenzy as she tried to get ready as quickly as possible.
When she finally through her door open, Draco was leaning against her doorframe, an amused expression on his face.
"What?" Hermione questioned.
"You were totally still sleeping."
"I was not!"
"I woke you up didn't I?"
"No, you just startled me."
"You are a horrible liar."
"I'm not lying."
"Really?" Draco asked amused, his eyebrow quirked. "Then why are you still wearing your pajama bottoms?"
Hermione looked down at herself, and her face turned beat red.
"Trying to start a new fashion trend Granger? Although, I don't think many of the other students are going to want to wear fuzzy pink pants with cupcakes on them."
"They were a gift from my mother." Hermione said in defense.
Draco smirked, as Hermione retreated into her room. She appeared a minute later, her pink pajama pants gone.
"Don't say a word," Hermione said warningly.
Draco smirked and followed Hermione, who had pushed past him and made her way to the portrait hole exit.
They made it to the Great Hall in time for breakfast, and Draco inhaled the delicious smells of the assortment of foods that were scattered across all the tables.
"I'll see you later Granger," Draco said as he headed towards the Slytherin table.
Hermione watched his retreating figure, and then headed to the Gryffindor table and sat with Ginny and Harry. She noticed that Ron was sitting closer to their group then he had the previous couple of days. When he saw Hermione sit down, he stood up and walked over towards her.
"Hey Hermione."
Hermione looked up at Ron and said, "Hey."
"How are you feeling?"
Hermione looked at him confused.
"We saw Malfoy carrying you to the hospital wing the other day, I was worried."
Understanding dawned on Hermione. "Oh, I honestly don't really know what all happened that day. But I am feeling better."
And then she realized that Ron had said. "Wait, Malfoy carried me to the hospital wing?"
"Yeah, he did." Ron said, his anger starting to show.
"Ron, we talked about this. Malfoy was clearly helping her out and we don't know what would have happened to Hermione had Malfoy not taken her to the hospital wing."
"We went to the hospital wing to visit you yesterday, but were told that you were sent back to your dorm. But, when we came to visit you, no one answered…" Ron said slowly.
Hermione felt her panic level rising. She should have known that they would have went to her Head Girl dorm to check up on her and make sure that she was okay. But was she ready to tell her friends what had happened? Was she even allowed to tell them? She needed to talk to Dumbledore, and immediately. She was horrible at lying, especially to her friends, and she knew they would sense that she was not telling the truth, which would make them even more suspicious.
Harry, Ron, and Ginny stared at her expectantly, waiting for her to answer.
"That's because I wasn't there," Hermione said honestly.
"Well where were you?" Ron inquired.
"I can't tell you that."
"What do you mean you can't tell us?" Ron shouted.
Ginny smacked Ron. "Keep it down you git."
"What do you mean you can't tell us Hermione?" Harry asked softly.
Hermione's eyes welled up, and she said, "I can't tell you. I'm sorry, but I can't."
"Why can't you tell us? What's going on?" Harry questioned.
Hermione let out a deep breath. "You guys need to trust me okay?"
"Of course we trust you," Ginny said placing her hand over Hermione's soothingly.
"Hermione, what's going on?" Harry asked again, his voice laced with concern.
Hermione let out a sob, but then covered her mouth.
Ginny leaned over the table, and grabbed Hermione's hands in hers. "Hermione, hunny what's wrong?"
"Was it Malfoy?" Ron asked angrily.
"No it wasn't Malfoy," Hermione stated softly.
"Hermione, you're worrying us. Please tell us what is going on," Harry pleaded.
"Alright, alright. I'll tell you as much as I can. But please, don't interrupt, this is going to be difficult enough without interruptions."
The three of them nodded, and looked at Hermione intently, waiting for her to start.
"Someone attacked me in the hallways when I was patrolling one night," Hermione said slowly. She looked up at her friends, and saw that they wanted to intervene, but she held up her hand, stopping them.
"Anyways, I was patrolling, and I felt someone watching me. I figured it was nothing, so I kept going. But then the lights turned off, and I just knew it was because of the same person who I felt watching me. So I stumbled around in the dark, trying to find my way around. Whoever it was, found me, and pinned me to the wall." A tear ran down Hermione's cheek, and she brushed it away angrily.
"I struggled with the guy for a while, and eventually freed myself, but incurred some damages myself. I was lucky to have escaped, and was running around blind in the dark trying to get away. Then I ran into Malfoy, who found me on the floor. I know I was so happy to see him, and I knew that I was safe. And that's all I remember until I woke up in Dumbledore's office."
She looked up at the three of them, and saw shock and anger on all of their features.
"Hermione, why didn't you tell us?" Harry asked slowly.
"Because you have enough to worry about Harry, I didn't want to bug you with something like this."
"We're your best friends Hermione, you should tell us things like this. We had no idea! We could have been protecting you this entire time!" Ginny exclaimed.
"I know Gin, but I didn't want to put you guys in danger. Whoever this person is, he works for You–Know-Who. He's after me for some reason, and he isn't going to give up. I've felt him watching me again, and me and Malfoy even ran into him in the hallways while patrolling after the whole ordeal."
"You and Malfoy? Malfoy is probably working with the bloody guy, why are you still patrolling with him?!" Ron asked angrily.
"I know Malfoy doesn't have anything to do with it Ron."
"And how do you know that Hermione? The guy is a bloody Death Eater!"
"Just trust me, I know."
"So Dumbledore is aware of what's going on?" Harry asked.
"Of course. After Malfoy took me to his office, I had to tell him what had happened, and he has been working on it ever since."
"But you said you felt this person watching you afterwards, and you ran into him again while patrolling? How does he keep getting into the castle?" Harry asked frustrated.
"I don't know, and I know Dumbledore is trying to figure that out right now. Whoever this person is, he knows how to get past the barriers and get in without being detected."
"We are not leaving you alone at all," Ron stated firmly.
Hermione sent him a small smile.
"We'll come patrolling with you. I don't trust you alone with Malfoy anyways. I think he has something to do with it. Hell, he's probably the one letting the person into the castle."
"I told you, Malfoy has nothing to do with it," Hermione snapped.
"Why this new found trust in that git?"
"Because I do."
"THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!" Ron shouted angrily.
Hermione narrowed her eyes.
"For your information, what I do and who I trust no longer concerns you Ronald. Malfoy has never done anything to hurt me to the extent that you did. And, Malfoy protected me when the man came after me a second time. He could have handed me over, but didn't, even after he told Malfoy to step away. So yes, I trust Malfoy, and more than I trust you."
Hermione stood up from the table, and felt a pair of eyes on her, and knew who it was immediately.
"And for you information, I don't need you patrolling with me, because I'm not patrolling anymore, Dumbledore's orders," Hermione stated before turning her back on them as she walked away.
Draco had watched the whole ordeal go down at the Gryffindor table. He had watched as Weasley walked over to talk to Hermione, and also saw when the conversation had altered its course and went negative. He had heard Weasley's outburst, even though he didn't understand what it meant. He would ask Hermione later.
When Hermione had stood up and started walking towards the exit, Draco had said farewell to Blaise, who nodded his head in understanding. Draco could even say that Blaise had been happy that Draco was voluntarily following Hermione, although he ignored it.
Hermione had stood at the doors, and turned around and watched as Draco made his way towards her. Draco realized in that moment that Hermione knew that he would come. The thought bothered him.
When he had made it to her side, she had turned around and the two of them made their way out of the Great Hall, not seeing all the confused stares that followed them as they exited the Great Hall together. If they had looked back at the teacher's table however, they would have seen Dumbledore with an amused expression on his face, and a twinkle in his eye.
"So what happened with the Dream Team?" Draco asked curiously.
"Ron's an idiot."
"Well I could have told you that one Granger."
Hermione couldn't help it, she smiled.
"So, what happened?"
Hermione looked over at Draco, and saw that he was actually genuinely curious and wanted to know.
"I told them about what happened."
Draco quirked an eyebrow and said, "So what did they say?"
"Well they weren't happy about it, that's for sure. And of course, Ron automatically put the blame on you, which caused an argument between me and him."
Draco felt his anger rise. Of course the Weasel would blame him for the whole ordeal. The thought hadn't even occurred to him, because he knew himself that he would never lay his hands on a woman, but clearly other people thought otherwise, and that thought really irked him, and pissed him off.
"Malfoy? Are you okay?" Hermione asked. She didn't know how she knew, but she knew that Draco was upset. He didn't show it, but she just knew.
"I'm fine," Draco stated.
"Malfoy, talk to me."
Draco stopped walking and turned towards her. "I don't appreciate your red headed lap dog blaming the attacks on me. I may be a bad person, but I would never lay my hands on a woman, Mudblood or not."
Hermione recoiled from the Mudblood comment. Although she had grown accustomed to hearing that word slip from his mouth throughout the years, she realized she hadn't heard him use that word for a while.
Draco noticed Hermione's recoil from his words, and realized too late what he had said.
"Well they can think what they want, but I made sure to let them know that you weren't responsible for what happened."
Draco looked at Hermione, but she had started walking ahead, and he immediately started following behind her.
Since they left the Great Hall before everyone else, the two of them were the first to arrive at the classroom. Hermione walked up towards the front, talking the seat in the middle, leaving the spaces on either side of her available for which Draco assumed was for Harry and Ron. He sat at the back right corner at his usual spot, and knew that Blaise would take the seat on his left, as was customary.
The rest of the students started filing into the classroom a few minutes after they had sat down, and Draco watched as Harry and Ron flocked to Hermione and sat on either side of her. Draco noticed Hermione's back stiffen when Ron sat next to her. He guessed that Hermione still wasn't completely over what had transpired between the two of them, but that she was trying her best to get over what had happened, especially with what she was dealing with. Draco believed that it was best for her to have as many people by her side as possible, it kept her safer, having greater numbers.
Ron looked back over his shoulder at Draco, staring him down. Draco cocked an eyebrow and smirked at Ron, causing the red head to turn around in his seat, but not before he narrowed his eyes at Draco menacingly.
Hermione then turned around looking at Draco, raising her eyebrows questioningly.
Draco shrugged his shoulders, and Hermione turned back around in her seat.
"Well, you two seem rather.. chummy."
Draco turned to look at Blaise who was now occupying the seat next to him.
"So how are things between you and Hermione?" Blaise inquired.
"Fine."
"Just fine?"
"Just fine."
"You guys seem to be on friendly terms."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well there was the whole thing at breakfast where she waited for you to meet her at the doors, and the two of you walked out together without arguing or without protest. And you willingly got up and followed her, no questions asked."
"It's my job." Draco stated.
"A job that you don't seem to have a problem doing anymore."
"What are you getting at?" Draco snapped.
"I think that you're starting to warm up to Hermione," Blaise stated.
"I'm not warming up to anyone. I'm doing my job of protecting her as per the Headmaster. I take my job seriously, and I am not getting blamed for something that I didn't do. The stupid Weasley git already thinks I'm the one responsible for attacking the Head Girl, and a lot of other people will probably assume the same thing once they hear about it. I am protecting her to prove that I have nothing to do with whoever this asshole is."
"Dumbledore doesn't think you have anything to do with it does he?"
"No, he knows I'm not involved, but that doesn't mean that everyone else believes me. I'm a Death Eater for merlin's sake, and whoever this is, is obviously in the Dark Lord's rank, automatically making me look bad."
"Normally you wouldn't care what other people think. Nor would you care what happened to Hermione. The old you would have just let it happen."
"Stop looking into this whole situation more than it needs to be. I'm the Head Boy, and I am doing the job that the Headmaster has asked of me. There's nothing else going on, I am not a 'different person.' I'm still the same person I have always been."
"Keep thinking what you want Draco, but the old you never would have accepted protecting Hermione, nor would he willingly follow her out of the Great Hall when she has a disagreement with her best friends. The old you would have laughed, and made fun of her for fighting with Potter and Weasley, and done anything to throw it in her face."
"What makes you think I didn't do just that?" Draco questioned.
"Because if you had done that, then Hermione wouldn't have just looked back at you to see how you were doing when Ron turned around and sized you up. It's okay to be friends with her Draco."
Draco turned towards Blaise, a deadly look on his face and hissed, "Just because I'm doing my job, does not mean that my feelings towards that Mudblood have changed. Stop trying to see the best in me, because I am not a good person."
Blaise shook his head at his friend.
"It's not a bad thing to change Drake."
"I have not changed."
"Changing isn't always a negative thing Drake."
"I haven't changed."
"Alright, whatever."
When class was over, Draco stood up and left, not waiting for anyone. He figured that since Harry and Ron now knew about what was going on with Hermione, they would make sure to take care of her throughout the day. Besides, Blaise had pissed him off and he was not in the mood to be near anyone, or babysit anyone.
Blaise was thinking him and Hermione were getting along? Well, he was just going to have to change that. He was Draco Malfoy, he was not friends with Mudbloods, and he was not nice to Mudbloods either.
Draco heard someone running up behind him.
"Malfoy, wait!"
Draco stopped walking, and turned to look at Hermione, who stopped walking towards him upon seeing the look on his face.
"What do you want Mudblood?" Draco hissed.
Hermione involuntarily took a step backwards.
"Malfoy? What's going on?" Hermione asked confused.
Draco spotted Blaise coming up behind them, and he felt himself snap.
"What's wrong is that I'm sick of your face. We're not friends, so stop acting like we are. You're Hermione Granger the Mudblood of Hogwarts, and I am Draco Malfoy, pureblood prince of Slytherin."
Draco could see Blaise shaking his head in his peripherals.
"I..I don't understand.."
"Well understand this Granger. The only reason I'm tolerating you is because Dumbledore is forcing me to. There would be other things I would rather be doing with my time then spending it with you."
Draco spun on his heel and walked away. If he had stayed even a second longer, then he would have seen the single tear that leaked out of Hermione's eye, and ran down her cheek.
