Blaise caught up to Draco, and grabbed his arm.
"What the hell was that about Draco?"
"And exactly what are you talking about?" Draco drawled bored.
"You being a git to Hermione."
"Oh, that," Draco said nonchalantly. "That was nothing Zabini. I'm just being my true self."
"Stop trying to kid yourself, you're not the same person you used to be. And you know what, I liked the new person you were becoming. You finally started accepting Hermione as what she is, a person. I was proud that you steered away from the junk that your father bred into you as a child, and that you were finally starting to do things for yourself, and not according to your dad."
"Do not speak about my father," Draco hissed warningly.
"If anyone can talk about your father, it's me. You've told me everything when it comes to your family, and we've been best friends since childhood, so I know your dad personally. Hell Draco, I've seen your father lay a hand on you right in front of me."
"Blaise.." Draco hissed warningly.
"I'm not afraid of you Draco. What are you going to do? Hit me? Go ahead. But then you will be no better than your father."
Draco stepped closer to Blaise, his face dark.
"Just because you're a Mudblood lover, doesn't mean everyone else has to be. It would be in your best interests to stop while you're ahead. I'm giving you a warning."
Blaise watched as Draco walked away, swishing his cloak behind him. Blaise shook his head. He didn't believe Draco's idiocy.
Harry and Ron made their way to Hermione's side, and by that time she had recomposed herself, and instead of being upset, she was now pissed off.
"There you are!" Ron and Harry stated as they found her in the corridor.
"Here I am," Hermione stated smiling.
"What are you doing standing in the middle of the corridor by yourself?" Harry asked.
"I'm not technically alone, there's students all around me," Hermione said smiling sweetly.
"You ran out of the classroom before we even had a chance to grab our things. Is everything okay?"
Hermione debated on telling Harry and Ron about what had transpired and decided against it. She knew that if she told them about what Draco had said, it would just infuriate them even more, and Ron was already mad enough at Draco, he didn't need another reason. Not only that, but she didn't want to have to explain why it bothered her so much. For all they knew, her and Draco still hated each other and treated each other the same way they always had. She hadn't exactly told them that her and Draco had been getting along…..
And Hermione didn't know why Draco acting like his old self bothered her. She had grown accustomed to Draco and his comments throughout the six years they had gone to school together, and she had even gotten over letting what he said bother her. Yet, hearing those words come out of his mouth had made her feel like she wanted to be sick and it had really bothered her.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just needed to check something with Malfoy," Hermione said, trying to keep her voice level.
"Ugh, can we just not say the M word?" Ron asked.
Hermione smiled, and Harry laughed.
"So, since he's not around, would you like Ron and myself to chaperone you to our next class?" Harry asked offering Hermione his arm.
Hermione laughed and linked her arm through Harry's.
"Why yes kind sir, you shall."
Hermione held out her other arm deciding that she had forgiven Ron. She needed her friends, and it was more important than worrying about what had happened in the past. And, if she was being honest with herself, she was over Ron and what had transpired between them. She had been so absorbed in her own life, Draco included, that she had let her anger and hurt about the whole thing drop from her mind.
Hermione looked over at Ron, and he was looking at her questionably.
She smiled, and his face lit up in understanding. In that silent communication, Ron had understood that Hermione had forgiven him for what had happened, and that she wanted things to be the way they used to be, and Ron could honestly say that he was thrilled. Although he still loved Hermione, it was more like a best friend, and he had not wanted to lose her.
His face lit up, and he smiled back at her as he linked his arm through hers.
"Awwww, look at that, the three of us all best friends again," Harry said smiling.
"Oi, shut up," Ron said embarrassed.
Harry laughed, which caused her and Ron to laugh also. Hermione loved the sound of their laughter mixed, it was a great sound, and one that she had missed.
They headed to class, their arms linked, and smiles on their faces.
Draco looked up from his seat as Hermione entered the classroom with her arms linked through her two best friends, and he felt a pang of jealousy.
He shoved the feeling aside, and turned his attention elsewhere, a scowl on his face. He then spotted Blaise, who had waved at Hermione when she had walked in, indicating the three seats to his left. Draco narrowed his eyes. He couldn't believe that Blaise had saved seats for the Gryffindor Trio.
The Slytherin's who had seen what Blaise had did, glared at him, but didn't say anything. Blaise was well respected within Slytherin, even though people didn't always agree with what he chose to do, or in this case, who he chose to associate with. Even though all of the Slytherin's didn't agree with Blaise's choice in friends, they had given up saying anything about it, as nothing they had said changed Blaise's mind.
Draco saw Hermione say something to Harry and Ron, and the two of them looked over in Blaise's direction. They unlinked their arms, and Harry nodded his head towards Blaise, acknowledging him in a form of respect, as him and Ron followed Hermione over to Blaise.
Hermione took the seat beside Blaise, and Harry sat on her left. Ron took the end seat, on Harry's left.
"Hey," Hermione said turning to Blaise.
"Hey."
"Why aren't you sitting with Malfoy? I mean, don't get me wrong, I love being able to sit with all of my best friends all at once, but you normally sit with him."
"We aren't exactly on speaking terms right now."
"Looks like he's pissing everyone off today.." Hermione observed.
"Yeah, about that.." Blaise started.
Hermione cocked an eyebrow and said "Blaise?"
"I may or may not be responsible for his bad mood, and lash out towards you."
"How would you be responsible? Malfoy is just a prat."
"I kind of pushed how I'm happy that he's changing into a better person and accepting you as you are.." Blaise said sheepishly.
Hermione smacked Blaise on the arm. "You're an idiot."
"You're not mad at me?" Blaise asked.
"Why would I be mad at you?"
"Because I pissed Draco off."
"Well clearly that isn't hard to do, as long as you know what to say to him. And you weren't the one who told him to come and be rude to me, he did that all on his own. He could have handled the situation a whole lot differently then he did, yet he chose to lash out on me."
"You're so mature, sometimes it awes me."
Hermione flushed and sent Blaise a small smile.
"But seriously Hermione, you're awesome."
"Thank you."
Blaise leaned in towards Hermione, wanting to make sure no one else could hear what he said.
"I probably made living with him a lot more difficult.."
Hermione waved him off. "Honestly, you don't need to worry. I can handle myself. And if Malfoy is going to be all snappy and rude with me, then he better be prepared to get it right back."
Blaise wrapped his arm around Hermione and messed up her hair with his opposite hand. "That's my girl."
Hermione shoved Blaise back, and then flattened her hair.
"Oi Blaise, are me and Harry gonna have to come over there and mess up your hair?"
Blaise sent Ron a huge smile and said "I would like to see you try Weasley."
Ron narrowed his eyes.
"I could take you."
Harry laughed and smacked Ron on the shoulder, "In your dreams."
"Oi! I could totally take Zabini!"
"In what world Weasley!"
"Mr. Weasley, Mr Zabini, when you two are down flirting with each other, I would like to get on with my lesson," Snape said annoyed.
Ron ducked his head in embarrassment, and Blaise being his cocky self sent Snape a giant smirk.
Snape rolled his eyes, and started up his lesson.
Draco glared at his best friend. Talking and getting along with Hermione was one thing, but openly joking around with Weasley, a person Draco hated even more than Hermione, was uncalled for. He could not stand Ron Weasley. Everything about the bloke pissed him off. From his red hair, to his freckled face, the company he chose to keep, and just how incredibly stupid the guy was. Draco, along with pretty much everyone else in the school knew that Ron would not be where he was today if it wasn't for Hermione helping him out with all of his schoolwork.
Draco ignored Blaise and Hermione for the rest of the day, making sure to stay as far away from both of them as possible, which he found was quite easy since they were pretty much latched to each others sides, with Potter and Weasley in the mix.
Dinner however, was a different story and it was a lot harder for Draco to ignore Blaise, as the two of them usually sat together every meal. Draco was still pissed and didn't want anything to do with Blaise and instead chose to sit with Pansy Parkinson and her friends, something Draco hated himself for doing. Pansy was a nice girl and all and meant well, but she utterly annoyed Draco. She would coo and drool all over him, not that he minded. What guy wouldn't enjoy being put on a pedestal by a woman? But after a while, she got overly clingy and annoying and Draco could only put up with so much before wanting to hex her.
Draco rolled his eyes at the delight that lit up on Pansy's face when he had made his way over to her, and sat in the empty spot to her left, which made him have his back to the Gryffindor table.
"Hey Draco," she purred.
"Hello Pansy."
"And what makes you choose to come and sit with me? Last time we talked you told me to leave you alone. Change your mind?" Pansy asked hopefully.
"Don't let this get your hopes up Pansy. Me and Blaise are in a disagreement of sorts right now, and I would prefer not to have to deal with him until the time is absolutely necessary."
"Is it because of that disgusting display in class this morning? Who knew that Blaise was a Weasley and Potter fan along with being a Mudblood fan… I mean come on. We both know that Blaise has always been a little rebellious, but don't you think that it is a bit much? Everyone and their grandmother knows that Blaise turned against his family and has decided he is not going to follow in his fathers footsteps and be a member of the Dark Lord's inner circle, but does he have to go around broadcasting it so publicly? It's an embarrassment to Slytherin. He should be outcast, but the only reason people keep their mouths shut is because you're his best friends and nobody wants to get on your bad side. Nobody in Slytherin likes him anymore besides you, we only put up with him because you do."
"Just because I came over here to sit with you, does not mean I wish to discuss the choices that Zabini has chosen to make."
"Is there another reason you chose to come and sit with me?" Pansy asked batting her eyelashes as she wrapped her arm around his and leaned into him.
"No there is no other reason Pansy. We had a thing a few years ago, and continued to shag each other on occasion when we had nobody else. Don't look into this anymore than needs be. We are not getting back together, I made that clear in the past."
"But Drakie, our parents have already arranged a marriage between the two of us," Pansy stated pouting.
"Thank you for that lovely reminder.."
"It is lovely isn't it?" Pansy asked dreamily.
"You have a funny way of interpreting things."
"And you're funny," Pansy said giggling.
Draco rolled his eyes.
"So since we're getting married, why don't we just start dating now?"
"Because Pansy, if I am to be stuck with you for the rest of my life and tied down, then I want to have my freedom now while I can."
"You can't avoid the inevitable Draco, we are going to be together as soon as we graduate."
"I am aware of the arrangement Pansy."
"Then why are you avoiding me? Why don't we start working on being together right now?"
"Because I don't want to be with you Pansy. I am being forced into a marriage that I don't even want to be in."
Pansy's eyes started watering. "Draco, that's not very nice."
"I am not a nice person Pansy."
"Well regardless, you are mine, and you will marry me soon whether you like it or not, so you better learn to start acting like a proper husband."
"I am not yours, or anybody else's. I had no choice in this arranged marriage. My parents chose it in order to assure that my bloodline remains pure, and that my child is a pureblood. We are being forced together in order to keep our parents happy, and that is the only reason why I am going through with this."
"Well aren't you happy that you're marrying me, somebody that you have known your whole life instead of someone you don't know?"
"Sure Pansy."
"Well regardless of how you feel or not Draco, we are going to be married, and you need to deal with it. Once we are married, I am not going to let you walk all over me. Here at school is one thing because you are amongst the higher ranks, but when we are married, I will have your last name and I will be standing right alongside you, having just as much power as you by using the Malfoy name."
Draco narrowed his eyes and stood up, not wanting to be at the table any longer. "Think whatever you want Pansy. Regardless of what my parents say, it will ultimately be my choice if I choose to marry you or not. The only reason my parents agreed for me to marry you is because they knew that you and me were friends and they were hoping that I would be happy with the arrangement. However, I am sure that I can persuade them to choose someone else who is more to my liking if you continue to piss me off."
Draco stalked off angrily, leaving dinner behind. Normally he would have stuck it out in order to make sure he got something in his stomach, but now thanks to Hermione he knew where the kitchens were and he would sneak off there later to grab something to eat. He was not going to sit there and listen to Pansy rattle off about him and their marriage, one that he didn't even want in the first place.
Hermione had watched Draco stalk out of the Great Hall before dinner had even hit the tables, and she felt concern well up inside of her. A part of her wanted to run after him and make sure that he was okay, but there was another part of her, a stronger part, that kept her seated. She didn't know why she had felt a need to run after Draco, and she was angry at herself for realizing that she cared about the stupid git, who cared about nobody but himself.
She felt a pair of eyes on her, and she looked over towards the other set of eye that would be looking at her from the Slytherin table, and spotted Blaise, who was looking at her questionably. He cocked an eyebrow, sending her a look that Hermione knew was questioning why she had been watching Draco, and she knew that Blaise had seen the look that had crossed over he face upon seeing Draco leave; one that showed concern towards her former arch nemesis.
Hermione cocked her eyebrow in response then turned her attention towards the food, which had now magically appeared on the table in front of her. Had she been looking at Blaise longer, she would have seen the smirk that appeared on his face because of her response.
Blaise had seen Hermione watch Draco leave the Great Hall, and he could tell from her body language and the way that her eyes were glued onto him that she very much wanted to follow him out of the Great Hall to see why he was leaving and to see what was wrong. Blaise found this amusing, because it proved his point that Draco had changed, and in a good way. Even though Hermione even a caring individual, had the old Malfoy walked out in the middle of dinner, she wouldn't have given it a second thought. However, now that Hermione had seen a different, better side to Draco, it had caused her to start caring about him.
Blaise was a very intuitive person, and he could see that Hermione was starting to develop feelings for Draco, whether she wanted to admit it or not. It was another reason why Draco snapping on her earlier that morning affected her as much as it did. Blaise had thought that maybe it had something to do with the fact that she cared about and for him, but now he was certain that this was the cause.
Blaise smiled as this dawned on him, and piled his plate up with an assortment of different foods and dug in.
Hermione chanced a look up from her food and looked over at Blaise, who Hermione was thankful had taken his attention off of her and averted it to his food. The rest of the meal went by quickly. She chatted with Ron, Harry and Ginny, and found herself happier and more carefree then she had been in a while. It felt good to be surrounded by her friends, which allowed her to temporarily forget about what she had been going through lately.
When dinner was over, Hermione realized that Draco wasn't there to accompany her back to their dorm, and she felt her panic set in. As much as she trusted her best friends, she knew telling them that she was living with Draco was a bad idea, not to mention that Dumbledore had specifically asked her not to tell anyone about her new living accommodations.
She felt a new presence behind her, and felt herself momentarily hoping it was Draco. When she turned in her seat, she tried to hide her disappointment, but it was obvious from the look on Blaise's face that she wasn't fooling him.
"Hey Blaise," Hermione said smiling sweetly at him.
"Hey Hermione, was wondering if you wanted to be accompanied back to your room?"
"That's alright mate, me and Harry have got it under control," Ron said speaking up, jealousy evident in his voice.
Hermione stood up and smiled at Blaise. "Sure Blaise, that would be lovely."
"But Hermione, me and Harry are more than capable of walking you to your dorm room."
"I know you are Ron, but Blaise already offered and walked over here from the Slytherin table to ask me, I can't be rude and deny his offer. But thank you anyways."
Hermione walked away quickly, before Ron could make another comment.
"So I'm sort of like your knight in shining armor aren't I? Blaise asked winking.
"Oh get over yourself!"
"Although, I'm not Draco.."
Hermione stopped and looked at him. "And what exactly is that supposed to mean?"
"You know exactly what it means."
"Obviously I do not, otherwise I would no be asking.." Hermione stated annoyed.
"You're a smart girl, I'm sure you can figure it out," Blaise said as he started walking again, knowing Hermione would follow, which she did.
"Seriously Blaise, I don't understand where your comment came from.."
"You like him," Blaise stated.
Hermione was baffled. "What? What are you talking about?"
"Notice how you did not deny my statement," Blaise said with a wink.
"Because it is completely insane!"
"Before, I would have believed that, but now, not so much.."
"Seriously Blaise, you're crazy," Hermione said shaking her head.
"Am I?" Blaise questioned.
"Of course!" Hermione stated confidently.
"Regardless of if you will admit it or not, I know what he said to you this morning affected you more than you would have liked. Before, a comment from him never would have fazed you. In fact, you would expect it. Yet, this morning his words affected you. And do I need to bring up dinner?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Hermione said, her voice faltering.
"How about when Draco left the Great Hall before dinner even started? I watched your reaction throughout the whole thing, I could tell that you wanted to follow after him, to try and find out what was going on, to get to the bottom of it and help him. It's in your nature Hermione, you're a caring person. You always try your best to help the people that you care about. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing. In fact, I am happy that you are seeing a side of Draco that I have always known he possessed. He may be cruel, but deep down he is a good guy, he was just brought up in an unhealthy environment with a father who shaped his opinions and decisions for him. This year I have seen a change in him, and I honestly think it has a lot to do with you."
Hermione bit her lip, contemplating on what to say.
"Hermione, we have never lied to one another, so don't try and lie to me. Besides, I know when you are lying."
"I'm not lying to you," Hermione said throwing her hands up in exasperation. "I just never really thought too much into things like you are. So what if I cared a little about what was wrong? Like you said, it's in my nature. That doesn't mean I like him."
"If I didn't know you as well as I do, I would believe that. But, as it is, I know you, and regardless of if you admit it to yourself right now, you do have feelings for him."
Hermione felt her thoughts running wild. Could what Blaise was saying be true? Could she actually LIKE Draco Malfoy, the boy who had made her life hell all through her previous years of school? There was no way… Or was there? He had been there for Hermione when no one else had. She supposed that someone could form some sort of liking towards a person who was acting as her protector? That was reasonable, wasn't it? He did refuse to hand her over to her attacker, and defended her even though she was a 'Mudblood.' He had also carried her to the hospital wing on two different accounts when he could have just left her. Had she grown soft towards him these past few weeks because of all of this? She guessed it was possible…
Hermione shook her head. There was no way that she had developed any form of feelings towards Draco. Yes, they had been getting along a bit more lately compared to usual, but she hadn't really thought much of it, at least until now…
Stupid Blaise for making her think…
Now she couldn't get Malfoy out of her head.
"Hermione? Are you in there?" Blaise asked waving a hand in front of her face.
"Yeah I'm here," Hermione said snapping out of her thoughts.
"Well good, because we're here."
"Pardon?"
"We're at your dorm room," Blaise said, a smirk on his face.
"Right, I knew that."
"Sure you did,"Blaise said, the smirk still plastered on his face.
"I did!"
"You were totally in your own world. Thinking about Malfoy?" Blaise asked teasingly.
"NO!" Hermione exclaimed, too quickly and offensively.
Hermione flushed when Blaise sent her a giant knowing smile.
"Shut up Blaise," Hermione said turning around, saying the password to her dorm so the door swung open.
"You're welcome!" Blasie exclaimed as Hermione walked through the open door.
Hermione sent him a glare over her shoulder, which left Blaise cackling in laughter as the portrait hole closed.
