Hermione didn't notice the figure that had been sitting in the dark on one of their couches in their common room. She kept walking to her room, lost in her thoughts. Draco had debated on saying something to her or not, but decided against it. He was not in the mood to deal with Hermione right now. He found that he was glad that she had chosen to go straight to her room instead of sit around in the common room like she sometimes did.
He stayed silent and still until Hermione disappeared behind her room door, and then he allowed himself to relax. He did not want to have to deal with her after his argument this morning with Blaise. In fact, he had doing his best to ignore her. Even though he didn't want to admit it, he had felt guilty leaving the Great Hall before dinner even started, as he knew that Hermione depended on him walking with her back to their dorm room together. In his haste, he hadn't cared. When he made it back to the dorm, he realized that he had pretty much left her out to dry, and was mad at himself for it. Dumbledore had seen him leave the Great Hall without Hermione, and the man had made it pretty clear that Hermione was not to walk to halls alone, and he had gone up and left her to do just that.
After realizing this, he went and sat in the common room that him and Hermione shared, and watched the time. He had given Hermione a time frame in which to get back to their dorm, and if she didn't get there by the time he allotted her, then he was going to go and look for her. He may be an asshole, and was in a foul mood towards both her and Blaise, but he was not going to let her wander the halls alone because of him.
Seconds before Draco was about to get up and go and look for her, he heard movement outside of the door, and stayed completely still, waiting to see if it was her or not.
He had heard the door swing open, and Blaise yelling "You're welcome." Draco was surprised when Hermione didn't even offer a thank you in return. He couldn't help it, he smirked. Maybe Blaise pissed Hermione off too.
Draco had forgotten that he had told Blaise that Hermione was now living with him. Had he remembered, then he wouldn't have been wasting his time sitting in the common room watching the time, waiting for Hermione to return. If he was going to be honest with himself, he had figured he would have had to go and look for her. And the first place he would have went to was the Gryffindor common room, which he now knew the location of thanks to being Head Boy. He had been curious over the years as to where the Gryffindors dormitories were.
He felt a tad disappointed that he didn't have to go and find Hermione. He liked that she relied on him for safety, it made him feel manly, in control. Especially having Hermione Granger relying on him. He didn't know why he liked it, he just did. He had been picturing the look on her face when he showed up to the Gryffindor common room to walk her back to their dorm, as that is where he figured she would have went. As stubborn as she was, he didn't think she would chance walking the hallways on her own anymore. He had also pictured the look on Weasley's face when he realized just who was standing outside of the Gryffindor common room, waiting to whisk Hermione back to her room that they didn't know the location of and he did.
Draco's stomach rumbled, and he stood up annoyed. Now because of Pansy, he had to sneak to the kitchens in order to get something to eat. He looked at Hermione's door, wondering if he should invite her along for the walk, then decided against it. He did however walk over and knock on her door anyways. He wasn't just going to leave the common room without letting her know he was gone.
Hermione opened the door and looked at Draco expectantly.
"What do you want Malfoy?"
Draco was not expecting the hostility that was in her voice, and concealed his surprise.
"Was just informing you that I'm leaving, not that it's any of your business."
"Then why did you come and tell me?" Hermione inquired.
He had not expected her to question why he had come to tell her he was leaving. Hell, he didn't even know why he felt the need to let her know. She could have figured it out all on her own if she called for him and he didn't respond. Yet, here he was, standing outside her door looking like a bloody idiot. He composed himself quickly, and let out a snarky remark.
"It doesn't matter Mudblood. Just know that I am going out, and unless you feel like getting yourself captured and most likely tortured, you should stay in this dorm room."
Hermione narrowed her eyes at him, and he saw that spark of anger flare in her eyes that he was so used to.
"For your information Malfoy, I will not get captured. Harry and Ron are both aware of the situation, and Blaise knows where I'm staying, so I have people I can call if need be."
"They may think they understand the situation, but they have no idea," Draco hissed angrily, taking a step towards Hermione. "They weren't the ones who saw you battered and bloody and ready to give up in the hallway. They weren't the ones who found you sick as a dog in bed. What would have happened if I hadn't found you in both of those situations? You may not have been here to tell the tale."
Hermione's eyes widened as her back made contact with the wall. She hadn't realized that her and Malfoy had walked right into her room, and that she was now cornered against a wall.
Draco slammed both of his hands on either side of her head, and Hermione winced.
Draco saw Hermione wince, and before he knew what he was doing, he leaned in and captured her lips with his.
Hermione hadn't comprehended what was going on until Draco's lips made contact with her own. The moment they touched, she felt an electricity between them that she had never felt with anyone else before. Hermione knew she should push Draco off, maybe even hit him, but instead she found herself responding to his kiss hungrily. She pressed her body against his, and wrapped her arms around his neck, her hands tangling in his platinum blonde hair.
Draco groaned into Hermione's mouth and responded to her intensity, slipping his tongue into her mouth as he pushed his body against hers in response.
He heard, and felt Hermione moan into his mouth, and that's when he snapped back to reality. He pushed her off of him, shoving her into the wall. He looked at Hermione, whose face was flushed and her lips were swollen from the intensity of their kiss.
He wiped at his mouth angrily. "What the fuck Granger?"
He watched as Hermione registered what had just taken place between them. "Malfoy! Why did you kiss me?"
"I didn't!""
"Yes you did!" Hermione yelled.
Draco ran his hand through his hair and let out a frustrated sigh. "I have no idea what the hell just happened, but whatever it was, it will never happen again."
"Well then don't kiss me," Hermione said crossing her arms.
"I didn't mean to! You just frustrate me and mess with my head!"
"What?" Hermione asked confused.
"Nothing! Leave me alone!" Draco shouted before turning around and stalking off, slamming the portrait hole door closed behind him.
Hermione watched his retreating figure, a million thoughts running through her head. She put her fingertips to her lips and felt how swollen they were. Through all of her years, she had never been kissed, or responded to a kiss with such intensity. Just thinking about it made butterflies flutter in her stomach.
She shook her head, clearing her thoughts. This was Malfoy that she was thinking about. The Draco Malfoy. She should not be feeling butterflies or any type of electricity when it came to him. She should feel pure hatred, but yet, when she thought about him, she didn't feel the hate that she used to. She didn't know what she felt, but she knew for sure that it wasn't hatred.
She debated on sending an owl to Ginny to meet up. The only problem with that, was that she couldn't walk anywhere to meet up with her, and Ginny wasn't supposed to know where she was staying. She could get a message to Blaise, but he wasn't someone that she wanted to speak to about boys, as he was one himself, and Malfoy was his best friend. Besides, she didn't want to see the smirk on his face when she told him what had happened. And she knew there would be a permanent smirk etched on his face the minute she explained how the kiss had made her feel. He would start up with his whole "You like Malfoy" rant, something that she didn't want to hear. There was no way that she could like Malfoy…
Hermione let out a frustrated sigh, and shut her bedroom door. She had been standing in the middle of her room exactly where Draco had left her.
She decided that she wasn't going to tell anyone about what had happened. There was no reason to. Draco had made it quite obvious that the whole thing was a mistake, and she agreed. They were sworn enemies. She was in Gryffindor, and best friends with Harry and Ron, and Draco was in Slytherin, and despised Harry and Ron more than he did her. The only thing the two of them had in common was their friendship with Blaise, and maybe their intelligence level.
Hermione had to admit, she had always been intrigued by how smart Draco was. It was a quality that she admired in a man. And no offence to Harry or Ron, but they didn't even come close to matching her smarts. The only person in this school who did was Draco, something that bothered her more than anything. Like the prat needed another reason to gloat. Thankfully, she had been able to keep her grades above him, much to his annoyance. There was no way in hell that she was going to let Draco get a higher grade then her on anything. This is one of the major reasons why she studied so much. Ever since Draco had made fun of her the very first time for her being a muggleborn and not deserving to be in the magical world, she had taken it upon herself to prove to everybody that she had just as much of a right to be there as them.
Since Hermione was being honest with herself, she had to admit that she had also found Draco's looks appealing. He was unlike any other guy she had ever seen, with his pale complexion and platinum blonde hair, which he wore in a messy array now, one that she personally thought suited him better then the gelled back look. Another thing that she had noticed about him, especially after their kiss, was how tall he was. She had always known that he was taller than most of the other students, but had never really been close enough to see his actual height. She only came up to his shoulder! Hermione had to admit, she found his height sexy.
She shook her head again. Did she really just admit that she found a part of Draco sexy? No, there was no way. That kiss must have messed with her head or something.. He was like a snake, maybe his kiss was poisonous?
Hermione giggled at the thought. Now she was just being ridiculous.
Draco stomped through the hallways in a foul mood. He didn't care that he was being loud, if anyone tried to say something to him, he would hex their bloody head off. It wasn't past curfew anyways, he still had a few hours before students were supposed to be in bed. Besides, he was the Head Boy, didn't need a reason for wandering the corridors past curfew.
Draco retraced the steps him and Hermione had taken not too long ago, as he made his way towards the kitchens. He saw the picture of the fruit, and bent down and tickled the pear. He felt ridiculous doing it, but he knew now that this was how you gained access to the school's kitchen.
The door swung open, and Draco walked inside. He spotted Dobby, his old house elf, and the one who loved Hermione. He walked over towards him, and Dobby looked up, and his eyes widened in fear.
"I'm not here to hurt you, you stupid elf. I'm here because I missed dinner."
Draco watched as Dobby relaxed, and he couldn't help but smirk. It was nice to know that he was still feared, even if it was just by some silly creature such as a house elf.
"What would Mr. Malfoy like to eat?" Dobby asked excitedly.
Draco quirked an eyebrow at Dobby's change in behaviour, but went with it. He wasn't going to pick a fight with the thing that was going to be fetching his dinner. And when it came to the house elves, it seemed that the nicer you were, the better quality of stuff that they give you.
"What do you have?" Draco questioned, trying to keep his tone light.
"Well, we have lots of things! Chicken wings, pork roast, Caesar salad, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrots, broccoli, spinach…"
"I believe that some pork roast, Caesar salad and a baked potato would suffice."
Dobby bowed his head, and headed deeper into the kitchen.
Draco debated on following the elf, but them remembered that last time Hermione had stayed put, and the elf had brought the food to her.
While waiting for Dobby to return, Draco took in his surroundings. There was a lot more house elves in the kitchen then Draco had ever realized. Although Draco knew that a lot of the richer purebloods owned house elves, he was surprised to see that Hogwarts had so many.
"A 'hem"
Draco looked down and saw that Dobby was back, a plate of hot food in his hands.
Draco's stomach rumbled and his mouth watered at the smell. He grabbed the plate from the elf, and said "Thank you."
Dobby's eyes widened in surprise, but he said, "You are welcome Mr. Malfoy."
Draco turned and left the kitchen, carrying his plate of food with him back to his dorm. When he returned, he sat down on one of the couches, and dug into his plate.
"Looks like somebody went to the kitchens."
Draco jumped at the sound, not having heard Hermione open her door.
"You're observant," Draco stated, as he stuffed more salad in his mouth.
"You're welcome for me showing you that by the way," Hermione stated.
Draco rolled his eyes.
"I hope you were nice to the house elves.." Hermione said sternly.
Draco put down his plate and turned to look at her. "Don't worry Granger, I made sure to knit each of them cute little sweaters after getting some food from them."
"You are such a git," Hermione said shaking her head.
Draco smirked and then grabbed his plate back from the table and started eating again.
"I'm serious though, if I find out you mistreated any of them at all…"
"You're going to what? Hex me?"
Hermione narrowed her eyes.
"That's what I thought," Draco stated smugly, as he shoved his empty plate onto the table. He lifted his feet up and put them on the table, stretching out his arms.
Hermione smirked, and used her wand to move the table away from Draco.
Not expecting the sudden movement, Draco toppled from the couch in a heap. He scrambled to get up, and when he finally stood, he saw Hermione doubled over with laughter.
"Think you're funny do you?" Draco asked dangerously.
Hermione straightened up, the smile wiped off of her face when she looked at Draco, who was looking at her menacingly.
Hermione started backing up, her hands up in surrender. "Malfoy, it was a joke."
"Well I didn't find it very funny."
"I understand and I apologize."
"No need to apologize Granger, after all, I don't get mad, I get even."
Without Hermione even seeing it happen, Draco was holding his wand and had it pointed directly at her. Her eyes widened in fear.
Draco had a wicked smirk on his face, and Hermione knew that she was in trouble. She turned around and tried to run back into her room, but before she could, she realized that her feet were no longer on the ground. She looked down and started kicking her feet around wildly.
"Draco Malfoy, put me down!"
Draco turned Hermione so she was facing him, an evil smile on his face.
"Draco I'm serious!" Hermione squeaked.
"What's wrong Granger?" Draco asked as he made Hermione raise up even higher.
Hermione looked down at the ground, and her face went pale.
"Malfoy seriously, put me down!" She squealed weakly.
It was then that Draco realized something. "Are you afraid of heights?!" he asked incredulously.
"No!" She yelled, too loudly.
Draco let out a bark of laughter. "You are! Hermione Granger, Gryffindor Princess is afraid of heights!"
"Shut up Malfoy!"
"I was always curious as to why I never saw you flying, now I know why," Draco stated as he lowered her back to the ground.
Hermione felt relieved when her feet touched back down on solid ground. She hated flying, and heights for that matter. And, if she was going to be honest, she was absolutely terrible at flying a broomstick. It didn't matter how much she read up on it, it never helped. Harry and Ron had tried to teach her a few times, but eventually gave up when they saw that there was no hopes in her getting better. Although they were disappointed, because she was the only one who couldn't participate in the fun Quidditch matches that occurred in the Weasley's backyard over the holidays, they eventually got over it when they realized that Hermione was less cranky when on solid ground.
She closed her eyes and inhaled some death breaths to calm her hammering heart, and because she didn't want to throw up on the floor in front of Draco.
Draco watched as Hermione's colour slowly returned to her face. She inhaled a final deep breath, and then opened her eyes.
"Welcome back."
"Shut up Malfoy," Hermione snapped.
"I didn't realize that you were afraid of heights, my bad."
"You seem very sincere.." Hermione said sarcastically.
Draco placed his hand over his heart, and said, "I sincerely apologize for scaring the living crap out of you."
Hermione snorted at Draco's attempt of apology. He had a giant smile on his face throughout the entire thing.
"Yeah, yeah whatever Malfoy."
"Are you not going to accept my apology?" Draco asked, faking hurt.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Fine Malfoy, I accept your apology. Are you happy?"
Draco shrugged.
Hermione looked at Draco thoughtfully, her insides remembering what had transpired between them not even an hour ago. She felt a tingle that started in her toes, and then ran up the rest of her body. Without realizing she was doing it, she raised her fingers to her lips again, replaying the kiss in her mind.
Draco quirked an eyebrow and wondered what Hermione was doing. She seemed to be in a sort of trance.
"Granger?"
Hermione snapped out of her ravine, and blushed profusely.
"What were you daydreaming about?" Draco asked.
"Nothing," Hermione stated sharply.
Draco knew instantly that Hermione was lying.
"Liar."
"What I think about does not concern you Malfoy," Hermione stated tersely.
"You're right, it doesn't."
Hermione watched as Draco retreated to his room, completely confused with Draco's changes in personality.
Hermione shrugged, and went back to her room, forgetting why she had left her room in the first place.
Draco threw himself down onto his bed and let out a frustrated sigh. His emotions were all over the place, and were getting harder for him to control, especially in the presence of Hermione. He scowled at his pillow. This was not how he was expecting his last year of school to be. He had figured being Head Boy had been a good thing, when in reality it was bad. If he hadn't been chosen as Head Boy, then he wouldn't have to be dealing with Hermione on a regular basis, and he wouldn't be sharing his dorm with her either. Although, he would have been pissed to see either Harry or Ron get Head Boy, like the two needed another thing to gloat about or to shove in his face. Draco had to admit; he was surprised when Dumbledore had chosen for him as Head Boy over his most obviously favoured student, Harry. He didn't question it however; as his father had been extremely pleased that he had finally beaten Potter at something. Draco was certain that even his father didn't think that he was going to be chosen as the Head Boy.
He didn't know what came over him in the common room, why he had kissed Hermione, and he was more than angry at himself for doing it. The reason he was so mad about it, was because he had actually enjoyed it. Kissing Hermione was unlike kissing anyone he had ever kissed before, and the fact that she was a Mudblood made Draco despise himself even more. If his father ever found out..
It was true, Draco had started being nicer towards her the past week or so, but that was because he actually felt bad for her. No woman deserved what had happened to her, regardless of if she was a muggleborn or not. He had grown.. soft towards her, an attribute that was not used when describing a Malfoy.
The reason Draco had gotten so mad this morning at Blaise, was because he had called Draco out on the way he was acting towards Hermione. Thankfully, no one else was ever around the two of them enough to see the changes that Blaise had clearly seen. He was pissed because he did not want to act differently towards her, yet, he couldn't help himself. He was doing it naturally.
He had seen a side of Hermione that he had never seen before. Seeing her as vulnerable as he did in the hallway the first time he saw her had changed his view of her. He was used to Hermione being tough, never backing down regardless of whom was facing her. And he had been assigned to protect her, and she relied on his protection, and he liked that.
Draco shook his head. What was he thinking? He did not like that Hermione relied on him. He did not care about anyone but himself, nor did he protect anyone but himself. He was not her babysitter. But yet, he knew that if it came down to it, he would protect her again if need be.
"Stupid Granger!" Draco screamed as he stuffed his face into his pillow.
It was all her fault. Everything. The way he was thinking, it was all on her. Living in the same dorm as her was brainwashing him. He needed to get away, to think straight. He could remember the scent of her perfume, vanilla. He smelt it whenever she was around. It was subtle, but Draco had strong senses, and found that the smell suited her and that he liked it.
Draco cursed. There he was, thinking about Hermione again and how she smelled.. He grabbed his cloak off of the back of his door and stormed out of their dorm room, for a second time that night. He needed to go outside to clear his head.
