Draco was walking around outside, enjoying the cool air on his skin. He could tell that colder weather was on the way, as the Christmas holidays were around the corner. He let out a breath, and saw his breath form in a mist in front of him. He shoved his hands into his pockets, and walked towards the Lake, and sat down on the bench and stared out at the waters. He saw a tentacle of the Giant Squid come above the water, and then just as quickly disappear.
He sat there for a while, and when the moon was it highest point in the sky, he decided it was getting late and that he should head back to his dorm. He had been gone for quite some time, and didn't want to get himself into trouble.
When he returned, he looked at the couches automatically, and saw that they were empty. He glanced quickly over at Hermione's door and saw that her lights were off.
He scolded himself for somewhat wishing that she was awake. He shook his head, and went to his room, slamming the door behind him.
Hermione jumped at the loud sound of a door being slammed, and she grabbed her wand off her bedside table and silently tiptoed towards her door. She placed her ear against it and listened. It didn't sound like anyone was walking around, so she slowly opened her door, her heart racing.
She peeked out into the common room through the little crack. She eased open her door more, and lit her wand saying "Lumos." She slowly walked around the common room, and her heart slowed when she realized that there was nothing there.
Hermione shook her head. She was being paranoid. Nobody knew that she was staying here apart from Draco and Blaise, and she knew neither of them would say anything to anyone. Well, she hoped Draco wouldn't at least. But she knew he took his Head duties seriously, and she didn't think that he would go around bragging that he was sharing his dorm with her, a Mudblood of all people.
Lost in her thoughts, Hermione stopped paying attention to where she was going, and next thing she knew, she had tripped and went flying through the coffee table. She let out a gasp as she felt a sharp pain through her arm.
Draco's door flew open, and he appeared in his doorway, his arm raised and his eyes looking around wildly. That's when he spotted Hermione on the ground amongst shattered glass.
Draco stowed away his wand, and crossed his arms in his doorway, amused by the scene in front of him.
"Granger? May I ask what the hell you are doing?"
Hermione muttered something unintelligible.
Draco walked towards her. "Speak up, I can't hear you."
Hermione stayed quiet, and Draco then realized that she was surrounded by blood. Before he even registered as to what he was doing, he had walked over to her and knelt down beside her.
"Granger, where are you hurt?"
"My arm," Hermione said softly.
Draco looked down at her arms, and realized that she was indeed injured there. A piece of glass had managed to pierce through her skin, and blood was flowing out of her wound.
Draco watched the steady flow of blood escaping her arm, and he realized just how severe it was.
"Granger, I think you've hit a vein. Pass me your arm, I need to get the glass out and heal you immediately."
Hermione wasn't responsive, and Draco saw that she was losing colour, and her eyes were drooping.
Draco grabbed his wand, and levitated Hermione to the couch. He very gently grabbed her arm, and slowly removed the glass. When the piece finally came loose, Draco used a healing spell immediately, stopping the flow of blood. He then continued to heal her until the place where the glass had pierced her wasn't even visible.
Draco looked down at his hand, which was covered in her blood. He ran his finger through it, and realized it was the exact thickness and colour as his. He furrowed his eyebrows together as he looked at it. He had seen her beaten and bloody in the corridor, but never really took the time to examine it. Now that it was all over his hands, he couldn't help but study it.
He felt Hermione stir, and he snapped his eyes to her face, making sure she hadn't seen what he was doing. He felt relief wash over him when he saw that her eyes were still closed. Knowing he did everything that he could, and seeing that she hadn't lost enough blood to die, he walked to the bathroom, and washed his hands in the sink.
He watched as the blood rain down the sink, and waited until the water was clear in colour again before removing his hands from under the tap. Draco scowled at his reflection in the mirror. Her blood was the same as his. Yet, his father had drilled into his head that it was different. It didn't make sense.
He walked back into the common room, and looked at Hermione. Against his better judgment, he shook her until her brown eyes opened and looked at him.
"D..Draco?" Hermione whispered softly.
Draco felt his heart twist upon hearing his first name slip through her lips.
"How are you feeling?" He asked, masking his confusion.
"I'm okay."
"Care you explain how you ended up almost killing yourself with our coffee table?"
Draco saw a faint blush rush to her cheeks, which were slowly getting colour.
"I thought I heard someone."
Draco raised his eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
"I heard a door slam, and came out to check and see what caused it."
Draco could tell Hermione was still weak; she was talking very softly and quietly, a tone that he was not accustomed to hearing when she was speaking to him.
"So you decided to go and check it out? You stupid Gryffindors and your bravery. It's going to end up killing your lot."
Hermione smirked.
"For your information, it was me who slammed the door. I didn't realize how loud I was."
Draco could see that Hermione was dozing off again. He cursed and picked her up from the couch, not wanting her to sleep in the common room. When he got to her door, he was asked for a password.
"Shit.. Granger!"
"Mmmmm?"
"Password."
"Crookshanks," she muttered, and the door swung open.
Draco was shocked that she had so easily said her password in front of him. He had expected her to tell him to sod off.
He looked around her room, observing his surroundings. Her room was exactly as he had expected. Red and gold was everywhere he looked; from her curtains, to her bedspread, and her pillows. She even had pictures of herself, Harry and Ron waving and smiling at him from behind the picture frame sitting on her bedside table. Draco walked over to her bed, and softly placed her on top of the covers. He used his wand to conjure a blanket, and placed it over top of her. A stray curl had made its way onto her face, and Draco leaned forward and tucked it behind her ear. Upon his contact, Hermione had sighed.
He had started to walk away, but felt her arm wrap around his wrist. Draco turned around and looked at her.
"What?"
"Stay," Hermione said quietly.
Draco's body tensed. Did he just hear her correctly? Did she just ask him to stay with her?
"What?" Draco asked slowly.
"Stay," Hermione said a bit louder.
Draco stilled. Now he knew the he had heard her correctly.
"You're bloody mental," Draco stated.
Hermione looked at him, her eyes pleading. Draco rolled his eyes.
"Fine Granger, I'll stay. But this doesn't mean anything. Clearly I just feel bad for you in this moment of weakness, and I'm not in the mood to argue."
Draco pulled back the blanket that he had conjured over Hermione, and slid underneath it. He was as close to the edge of the bed as he could possibly be without falling off. Hermione seemed to notice because she said, "I don't bite Malfoy."
"Shut up and go to sleep Granger," Draco snapped.
"Can you at least move over a bit so I don't have to worry about you falling off my bed in the middle of the night?"
"Will it make you shut up and go to sleep?"
Hermione didn't answer, and Draco huffed before shifting himself slightly closer towards her. Hermione stayed quiet, and Draco was wondering whether or not she fell asleep.
"Malfoy? Are you awake?"
"Is there need for this unnecessary pillow talk Granger?"
"I just wanted to thank you again."
"If I would have known you would be this grateful I would have just left you there."
Hermione shoved him. "You would not have!"
Draco narrowed his eyes and shoved Hermione back.
Hermione sat up and grabbed her pillow and slammed it into Draco's face.
She giggled when she saw the look of pure shock on Draco's face.
"Did you just hit me with a pillow Granger?"
Hermione started giggling, and when she realized what she was doing, she slapped her hand to her mouth.
Draco sat up and before Hermione knew what was happening, she felt herself topple over the side of the bed from the force of the pillow that Draco had just hit her with.
Hermione could hear Draco laughing as she hit the floor.
She scrambled up off the floor, and shot Draco a murderous look before grabbing her pillow. She leaped across the bed, and ended up straddling him as she continuously hit him with her pillow.
Draco threw up his arms trying to protect his face, but Hermione continued her attack, laughing and shouting in in victory.
Draco grabbed the pillow as it came towards his face, and chucked it across the room. Hermione started to get up, planning on chasing after the pillow Draco threw, but he grabbed her arms, and ended up maneuvering their bodies so he was now on top of her. Hermione squirmed underneath him, putting up a fight. Draco smirked as he kept a hold on her arms, and pinned her down to the bed, using his weight as leverage.
"Now what Granger?" Draco asked smirking.
Hermione narrowed her eyes, and Draco could practically see the gears spinning in her head as she thought of a way to get out of her position.
"Sorry Granger, you're trapped."
"I am not," Hermione argued stubbornly.
"Really?" Draco asked quirking an eyebrow in interest.
"If I wanted to, I could easily get out of this."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yup."
"Well then Granger, why don't you enlighten me, or show me how you could possibly get out of this."
Hermione smirked, and bucked her hips, which Draco had not been expecting, and that's how he found his lips now inches away from Hermione's. He had been unprepared for her to fight back, and had ended up falling forwards on top of her, the only thing keeping him from completely laying on her was his hands, which he had detached from around Hermione's arms, and was now supporting himself with them.
Hermione's eyes widened.
Draco realized how close they were, but yet he couldn't pull himself away. He found himself staring transfixed at her face. He could feel her body heat coursing through his clothes, and he could feel her heart hammering wildly in her chest. He felt her warm breath on his face, as she tried to keep her breathing mellow. Draco could tell that this close proximity was making her nervous, but she wasn't doing anything to push him away. Instead, she was staring at him, her mouth slightly open in wonder.
Draco leaned down, and captured her lips with his. He felt Hermione stiffen underneath him and was about to pull back realizing what he had just done, until he felt Hermione respond, her body relaxing underneath him. Without thinking, Draco deepened the kiss, and Hermione responded immediately.
He broke the kiss, trailing kisses from her mouth to her neck. Draco hit a spot that Hermione responded to with a moan, and her body tensed underneath him. Draco tensed his hips, feeling stiffening between his legs. It had been a while since a girl could get this reaction out of him. Normally they had to start physically touching him before he felt any sort of excitement. He started nibbling on her neck, enjoying her moans of pleasure that escaped her lips upon his attack on her neck.
Draco reluctantly pulled away. He didn't know how much longer he would have been able to control himself. Draco's eyes snapped open wide. He scrambled off of Hermione, who still had her eyes closed. Hermione slowly opened her eyes and looked at Draco.
Her face was flushed, and her eyes were shining. Draco could feel his body being drawn towards her again, and he angrily reminded himself that she was a Mudblood.
"Mafoy?"
Draco closed his eyes, gathering his wits. When he opened them, he saw Hermione was looking at him still.
"What Granger?" he snapped.
Hermione sat up, and he saw understanding cross her face.
"Let me guess," she said, trying to keep her voice level, "you momentarily forgot who you were with and are now disgusted in yourself for kissing a Mudblood."
Draco felt a pang as she called herself a Mudblood. It was something else entirely for her to call herself one, and he didn't like how she said it so easily, without even flinching.
"You can let yourself out," Hermione stated.
"What?" Draco asked momentarily stunned.
"The door. You can let yourself out."
"You're excusing me?" Draco snapped outraged.
Hermione crossed her arms and looked at him expectantly.
"Who do you think you are Granger?"
"Malfoy I'm not arguing with you, now leave."
"I do not take orders from a Mudblood!" Draco hissed.
Hermione stood up, anger etched on her face.
"This is MY room Malfoy."
"And from what I recall Granger you invited me to stay!"
"Which was clearly a mistake!"
"It's that obvious is it!?"
"You were the one who agreed to stay in the first place! It's not like I forced you to."
"Well sorry for feeling a momentary lapse of judgment."
"Then LEAVE MALFOY! Nobody is forcing you to stay."
"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"
Hermione grabbed her wand from her pocket and pointed it at Draco, her eyes narrowed dangerously.
Draco looked at her wand which was now pointed at him, and then looked back up at her face.
"You gonna hex me Granger?" Draco asked dangerously.
"Leave," Hermione said sternly.
Draco took a step towards her.
"I swear Malfoy, one more step and I will hex you."
Draco took a step forward, and Hermione shouted "Everte Statum!"
Draco went flying backwards as the spell hit him, and he ended up sprawled out on the floor right outside the door of Hermione's room. Before he could get up, Hermione had slammed the door in his face.
He got up and grabbed the handle of her door and turned it. It was locked, not that he was surprised.
"Granger open this door before I knock it down!"
"Go ahead Malfoy! And then you can explain to the Headmaster why my door is missing!"
"You would go running to that old git now wouldn't you!"
Hermione opened her door, and Draco jumped out of the way to avoid it smacking him in the face. Hermione had her wand raised again, and her face was contorted in rage.
"Do not insult Dumbledore in front of me."
"You're just as bad as Saint Potty, the boy who never dies. You two should start an I love Dumbledore fan club."
"Malfoy, I'm warning you," Hermione hissed.
"What are you going to do Granger? Hex me again? I would like to see you try." Draco stated dangerously.
"I didn't want to hex you Malfoy, it is against school rules to hex another student."
"Of course, the Mudblood is feeling guilty now because she went against the rules. Go and turn yourself into Dumbledore, let him know that you hexed the Head Boy. Personally, I hope that he expels you. I would much prefer not having to see your face on a daily basis."
"You weren't saying that mere minutes ago when you were on top of me kissing me."
"Can you stop bringing that up! I already told you it was a mistake!"
"A mistake that has happened more than once?!"
Draco glared menacingly at her.
"Well you'll be glad to know that I agree, that it is a mistake."
"And me saving you in that hallway was a mistake."
Draco saw Hermione's wand falter, and he could tell that Hermione was shocked by what had slipped out his mouth. He regretted the words as soon as they passed his lips, he was just angry. He didn't mean what he had said at all, it was a defense of his, hurting people. He didn't let people get close to him.
Hermione had turned around, but not before Draco saw a tear run down her face.
"Granger, wait."
Hermione spun around, not even trying to hide the tears that were on her face, but Draco was surprised to see how angry she was even with the tears.
"What, you want to tell me how saving me in the hallway was a mistake again? Or did you wanna go even further and say that you wish the Death Eater killed me right there in the hallway?"
"I didn't mean…"
Hermione laughed. "Who are you trying to kid? We both know you meant what you said."
"Granger I swear.."
"Malfoy, you've already done enough damage alright? You've won okay? You made the Mudblood cry. Congratulations. Now you can go and tell all of your friends all about it, so they can all laugh at me as I walk through the halls. And you were right, what happened between us was a mistake. I was crazy to think that you changed, you are exactly the same as you have always been. A heartless, egotistical git that doesn't care about anybody but himself. You're just as bad as your father. He must be so proud to know that he made a walking replica of himself out of you."
Before Draco could respond, Hermione had slammed her door in his face. He stared at her closed door, her words replaying in his mind.
I was crazy to think that you changed…. You're just as bad as your father.
Even replaying the words in his mind didn't make them any easier to hear. If anything, it made it even worse. He always knew that Hermione and her friends didn't like him, but is that what they honestly thought of him? That he was a replica of his father? A year ago, Draco would have been proud to hear that, but now thinking that people believed he was like his father was an insult. His father was a coward, a follower. Draco was not a follower, he liked to lead people, which is why he had come to Hogwarts and established himself as a force to be reckoned with from the start. Everyone at the school knew that he ran Slytherin, that all the younger years, along with his year as well were afraid of him.
Draco knew that Hermione wasn't going to come back out of her room no matter what he said, and if he was being honest, he didn't think he could face her after what she said. Normally he wasn't bothered by her words, but this time they really hit home, and he found himself actually affected by her words. Not that he would admit it to her.
If that was what Hermione thought of him, then maybe he should just follow her accusations and act that way?
Draco sneered at her door. If that was what she thought of him, then that's exactly how he was going to act. She thought he hadn't changed? Well he wondered how she would like this new Draco.
He walked back to his room, and shot one last glare at Hermione's door before shutting his own door behind him.
