Chapter Seventeen
“Sorry I’m late. Lav and I had another fight. So what’s going on?” Ron asked, looking around at the others there.
“Him?” she asked the former headmaster. “Ron asked you to spy over at Merlin’s…”
“Oi! Wait just one second! I haven’t done anything…” Ron erupted.
“No! I don’t speak to that one! He’s below my notice most days,” Phineas announced at the very same time the youngest Weasley male spoke.
“Then who asked you to do the spying on Merlin’s Crystal Cavern Club?” Hermione inquired.
“It was me.” That had the people turning to look over at Harry Potter.
“What for?” she asked.
“I don’t have to answer that,” Harry pointed out to her. “I’m the head of the aurori and if I suspect something is amiss going on in that establishment, I’m perfectly within my rights to find out.”
“Yes, you are, but it’s the way you chose to look into the matter that’s in question,” Hermione said tightly. “You don’t have just cause never mind the proof that would allow you to have a listening device such as what Headmaster Black would be considered to be by the Wizmogot. If you have your doubts, send in an undercover agent or get yourself an paid informant—both of which are within your purview, seeing as you’re the head of the fucking department and just whom the members of the club are.”
Harry’s face was a bright red by the time she was finished with her speech. He said nothing about what she just said to him, but muttered, “I need a drink.” And left the others in the tight hallway to go get it.
Ginny soon left along with Tonks and Teddy, leaving just Hermione, Severus, Remus, Ron, and Sirius standing next to the portrait.
“Why did you have to come down so hard on him?” Ron asked with Sirius nodding in agreement behind him.
“Seeing as some of the most egregious of errors were made under his watch, I do believe I’m within my rights to call him on yet another mistake that could have been avoided,” she told them tightly. “And before you jump to his defense blindly, Ronald, let me remind you that I have the Wizmogot on my side with that one.”
Ron’s face went red, as he muttered, “Those were my mistakes.”
“Yes, but you hid behind Harry well enough didn’t you? Without any repercussions, as Harry allowed it! Were you hit with any of the mud flung his way when it was discovered that you destroyed evidence and official documents or did Harry have to play the savior of the wizarding world card yet again thus barely savaging his own career? Or did you resign too quickly for you to feel any sort of well deserved repercussion?”
“The man asked…”
“He was on trial for multiple homicides, but you never once questioned that it might be, I don’t know, against the law! You never once stopped to think of that did you? You’re not an idiot, but since when did you not question something that is inherently wrong?” Hermione was shaking by this point. She took a deep breath, muttering, “You’re worse than an idiot, Ronald. You’re a fool.”
It was Sirius who asked, “You mean to say he was the one that destroyed all that evidence and thusly the case against the man that killed your parents?” All the other three men were now glaring at a now very scared Ron. “You nearly lost Harry his job!”
“His reputation may never recover,” Remus pointed out, sounding disappointed.
“The man responsible for killing four people is out on the streets free, because you thought it would be a wise career move to listen to the same said murderer who was claiming I was pinpointing him in this insane and fruitless quest as I was mentally unhinged,” Hermione said sarcastically. “And now anyone who actually believes a word Rita Skitter has written—which is still everyone for some unknown reason—think I’m crazy. What’s worse is that you lost your job and have to work for the twins once again because no one else will hire you…”
“Not that I blame anyone with a brain not to hire the oaf,” came from Severus under his breath.
Hermione glared at him, continuing with, “And Harry is still dealing with the repercussions of people not trusting his word. Congratulations, Ronald, you hit the trifecta.”

“I’m sorry.”
Hermione’s quietly spoken words had Severus looking up from the book he was reading. She was standing in the doorway of the study, rubbing her stiff neck and looking contrite. Closing the book, he pulled off his reading glasses and set them both on his desk.
“What for?” he asked, standing up.
“We never found out about the details of what Phineas overheard or whom exactly he saw there at the club. We never even had the chance to see if Narcissa’s teenaged portrait were there in the attic either.” Wrapping her arms around herself. “I just get so pissed off at Ron at times that I can’t see reason.”
“You don’t have to be his friend,” he said as he went over to her, taking her into his arms. “Just because you were once close doesn’t mean it has to continue.”
“We’re not close friends anymore, but I have attempted to keep the peace,” she reasoned. “If only for Ginny’s sake.” She laughed bitterly. “Ginny’s been caught in the middle and Harry has been trying to protect her throughout it all. I doubt she even knows a fraction of what happened.”
Sighing, he kissed her forehead, whispering, “It’s late. Let’s worry about getting that information tomorrow, shall we?”
Emotional exhaustion ate at her reasoning and she knew that he was in the right, but this didn’t stop Hermione from thinking. Harry had sent a portrait into a private club to spy on its members. Did he do it because he genuinely wanted justice and could see no other way? Or was it something more?
“There’s no reasoning with anger,” she murmured, as they walked to the room.
“None,” he agreed. “I have years, dare I say, decades of experience with hitting my head against that particular wall.”
“And redemption is a difficult task to achieve when one isn’t thinking straight,” she went on.
He stopped walking, pulling her to a halt. “What are you thinking?”
“Harry,” she murmured, looking into his obsidian eyes. “He’s trying to prove himself again and there’s only one way he can see it done.”
Severus rolled his eyes and muttered, “He’s hunting for death eaters.”
“Yes, I do believe he is,” she affirmed. “And Merlin help us all, he’s going about it all the wrong way.”
They began walking again, as he inquired, “Are you going to be helping him?”
“Don’t we have enough on our collective plate to accomplish?” She let out a bone weary sigh, opening the bedroom door. “He’s a big boy and more than able to take care of what he must.” She went straight over to her side of the bed, turning the bedclothes down. “If by any chance we happen to run across a death eater with an outstanding warrant, we’ll send that individual his way. But I’m not going to make it a point of doing his job for him, are you?”
“Far from it,” he agreed, folding over the duvet to get into bed.
Severus lay down, waiting for her to take off her hearing aid and join him. Soon she was snuggled up next to his body, pressing her face against his shoulder as her hand pressed against his chest over his heart. Before he knew it, she was tracing something on his chest over and over again. It startled him when he realized exactly what it was. A rune of protection, he thought, turning to face her. Cupping her face, he closed his eyes and kissed her forehead. It was in that moment that he knew that he would do anything to keep her with him forever.
