After showering and getting ready, Draco left his dorm room, leaving Hermione behind. He knew he was supposed to walk Hermione down to the Great Hall for breakfast, but damn it to hell if he was going to babysit her anymore. She was an adult who had friends who he knew were more than willing to take care of her if need be. After their encounter the previous night, Draco had awoken the following morning in a bad mood. Hermione's words had played over and over in his head through the majority of the night, and whatever he had felt for her before was replaced by anger and a determines to show Hermione the true Draco Malfoy.
On his way to the Great Hall, Draco had deducted house points from both Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. Both houses had started to protest until the saw the look that was on his face, and stopped talking abruptly and shuffled out of his way cowering. Draco smirked. He was back.
Draco walked to the Slytherin table, and took his usual seat beside Blaise.
"Morning," Blaise said in greeting.
"Zabini," Draco answered.
"Is Hermione sick?"
Draco had been reaching for a piece of toast and froze.
"What?"
"Is Hermione sick?"
"How would I know."
"Drake, you live with her.."
"Yes, and what a treat that's been," he spat.
"Trouble in paradise?" Blaise asked smirking.
"You call living with the Mudblood paradise?"
Blaise looked taken aback and then studied Draco.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Nothing. Why do you ask?" Draco drawled.
"You're acting different.." Blaise said slowly.
"If you mean acting like a Malfoy, then I'll take that as a compliment."
"What's gotten into you?" Blaise questioned.
"Nothing."
"Draco what the hell is going on?"
"There is nothing going on Blaise. I've decided that I haven't been acting like myself, and needed to be me again."
Blaise shook his head.
"What?" Draco snapped.
"I thought you were better than that Draco."
"Better than what?"
"Than acting like your father."
Draco narrowed his eyes menacingly. "You have no right to talk about my father Zabini. Just because my father was a coward does not mean that I am. I am a Malfoy, and I will uphold that name of authority and power."
"By treating everyone else around you like shit?"
"It never once bothered you before how I treated people Zabini. If I recall correctly, you used to join in on every prank that was played, and laughed alongside the rest of the Slytherins."
"Yeah, used to being the key words in that whole sentence Draco. I grew up and realized that treating people poorly for no reason is immature and not who I am."
"All of those people deserved what they got."
"You truly believe that?"
"I do," Draco stated.
"Then I truly feel sorry for you. We have less than a year left at school here, and then what Draco? You think the Dark Lord is going to allow you to go into his ranks after all the fuck ups that your father has caused? I highly doubt it. So, what are you going to do? Go and live at the manor with your riches? Or maybe get a job in the Ministry of Magic, which I highly doubt will happen considering that's probably where Potter and his gang are going, and we all know the Ministry will take Potter over you. So then what? You going to be all alone in the Manor, with the occasional visit from your father when he's off duty being a Death Eater? You've already pushed almost everyone out of your life and if you continue to keep acting the way you are right now then you're going to have absolutely no one to stand by your side. I hope you living up to your fathers expectations and beliefs is worth being isolated for the rest of your life."
Blaise stood up and pushed his untouched breakfast plate away from him.
"Think about what I've said Draco. You've been my best mate since we were little, and I don't want to see you go down the wrong path, which is where I am afraid you're heading. I thought you were over all this Pureblood and I'm greater than everyone because I'm a Malfoy crap. I don't know what happened that made you revert back to your old ways, but I preferred the man that you were becoming."
Before Draco would retort, Blaise had walked away from the Slytherin table and out of the Great Hall. Draco debated on following him to give Blaise a piece of his mind, but decided against it. What was he going to say? That it was because of Hermione Granger that he had reverted back to his old ways? No, he couldn't admit that, because then he would need to tell Blaise what had happened, and then Blaise being Blaise, would somehow come to the conclusion that Hermione's words affected him and that he was so bothered by her words because he cared about her opinion of him. Which he didn't. Why should he care what Hermione thinks of him? She was a Mudblood, a nobody. He shook his head angrily and stabbed his fork into a sausage.
Hermione was sitting in her common room debating on sending Harry and Ron an owl when she heard a knock on the dorm room door. Hermione approached the door slowly, her wand raised.
"Hello?"
"Hermione? It's me."
Hermione let out a relieved sigh and swung open the door.
"Hey," Blaise said smiling.
"Hey! What are you doing here?"
"Well I saw Malfoy show up this morning and didn't see you with him, and after talking to him, I realized that he left you up here."
Hermione's eyebrows drew together. "I don't understand why he just left."
"It's Draco, who knows. All I know is that something has clearly pissed him off, and now he's reverted back to his old ways. So, he's just an absolute treat to be around."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, he's back to being the old Draco."
Hermione's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"Do you have any idea as to what's going on with him?"
"Nope," she said, too quickly.
"Hermione, if you know something you need to tell me. I don't want to lose Draco completely."
"Maybe it's for the best."
"Do you actually believe that?" Blaise asked repeating the same question he had asked Draco that morning.
Hermione sighed. "I don't know anymore."
"And what is that supposed to mean?" Blaise inquired.
Hermione let out a deep breath. "I don't know."
"I'm clearly missing something…"
"No, you're not."
"You're a horrible liar."
Hermione grabbed her bag from the floor. "Can we go down to the Great Hall now? I want to grab some breakfast before classes start."
Blaise followed Hermione out of the portrait hole. "This conversation is not over. I know something is going on, and I want to get to the bottom of it. So you're going to tell me what you know."
"Fine! But later alright?"
"I'm holding you to that! You are not getting out of this one."
"I never once thought I would be able to."
"Good," Blaise said smiling.
They approached the doors of the Great Hall with time to spare, and Blaise's stomach growled. Hermione looked at him amusedly. "Hungry?"
"You could say that," Blaise said pushing open the doors.
"Didn't you eat earlier?"
"No, I was busy."
"Doing?"
"Trying to figure out why Draco was here and you weren't. Which turned into a sort of disagreement of course."
Hermione rolled her eyes.
Hermione started to head to the Gryffindor table, but then stopped.
"Do you want to come and sit with me at the Gryffindor table?"
Blaise quirked an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"
"Why not? Do you really want to go and sit back at the Slytherin table with Malfoy?"
"Not particularly, but I also don't want to get ambushed by a bunch you crazy Gryffindors."
"They won't touch you, trust me. I'm Head Girl, and I'll hex whoever I need to."
"You'd hex your own house?"
"If harm was going to come to one of my friends, then yes I would."
"Hmm.."
"Well?"
"Well what?"
"Are you coming to sit with me or not?"
Blaise shrugged, but saw Hermione smile, and she headed towards the Gryffindor tables, him following behind her.
As he walked towards the Gryffindor table, whispers erupted throughout the Great Hall all around him. It was unheard of for a student to go and sit at a table that they did not belong to. But Blaise didn't feel like he belonged in Slytherin anyways, so he didn't really care what his fellow housemates thought of him. The whole school already knew that him and Hermione were friends.
Blaise saw Harry and Ron turn to look at him quizzically, but Hermione leaned down and said something to them, and they scooted down, making enough room for both Hermione and himself.
Hermione sat down and smiled at him as he slid into the seat on her immediate right. Ginny gave him a shy smile from across the table, which he returned. The rest of the Gryffindor's were either shocked or scared of his arrival at their table, and chose to stare at him.
Hermione started filling up her plate, and Blaise did the same. Once everyone realized that Blaise wasn't going anywhere, the whispering ceased, and the students went back to gossiping and talking about what they were previously conversing about, occasionally shooting a confused look at Blaise.
Draco watched the whole display in shock, confusion, and then anger. He thought Blaise heading over to the Gryffindor table was just a show of Blaise making sure that Hermione made it to her friends safely, but when they had shifted over and made room for both Blaise and Hermione, Draco had been shocked beyond belief. Especially since Ron and Harry made room for Blaise without question, nor did they feel the need to stand up and whip out their wands at him like they would have done if Draco or any other Slytherin had tried to approach the table.
A part of Draco thought that Blaise would have just turned around and headed back over to his house's table, and when he realized that that was not Blaise's plan, Draco had felt his anger rise. It was one thing to be friends with a Mudblood, but to openly display it, and then go and sit at the Gryffindor table, the one house that Slytherins hated more than anything, was like a slap in the face to the rest of Blaise's housemates, who were all shooting him murderous looks whenever they had the chance.
Blaise was already not well liked by the Slytherin house, ever since he had befriended Hermione. Clearly, he was starting to be on friendly terms with Harry and Ron too, something that was even worse than being friends with a Mudblood. Draco knew that Blaise didn't care what his house thought of him, but Draco did. Blaise had been his best mate for years, and his actions reflected Draco. Especially if Draco was seen associating with Blaise after he was done chatting with the Gryffindors.
Blaise and Draco had always had their differences, but they had always worked through them. Blaise and Draco were both very opinionated and when they believed something was right there was no changing their mind about it. Which had obviously caused a few heated arguments between them. However, nothing was ever as bad as Blaise choosing Gryffindors over his own house. Draco had never fully accepted or approved of Blaise being friends with Hermione. Her, along with Harry and Ron were just people that Slytherins did not befriend. Blaise however, had clearly decided that they were, and Draco was not okay with it. Blaise was a Slytherin, a Pureblood. He should not be associating himself with Mudbloods, blood-traitors, and the man that 90% of the Slytherins were rooting for Voldemort to kill.
Draco had partially accepted Blaise spending time with Hermione, although he didn't support it or understand it. But, after last nights conversation with Hermione and what had transpired, Draco was done with Hermione and whatever had to do with her. If that meant Blaise, so be it. He didn't want any sort of connections with her, hell, if he was forced to communicate with her, he was going to do so in his old manner: making fun of her and pissing her off. That was the way things were supposed to be. Him and were supposed to hate each other and throw insults at one another whenever possible. He wasn't supposed to be on friendly terms with her, walking her to classes in the hallways, talking to her in a civil manner, or even kissing her for that matter.
Draco looked over at the Gryffindor table again and saw Harry lean over Hermione to say something to Blaise. Draco watched Blaise respond and then they all started laughing. Draco scowled.
Dumbledore stood up and the hallway went quiet.
"Good morning students! I hope you have all had your fill, as there is no better way to learn than with a stomach full of food!"
Some laughter was heard throughout the hall.
"I would like to say that something happened this morning that I am extremely proud of. I have always supported house unity, and there was some of this displayed this morning." Dumbledore's eyes locked onto Blaise over at the Gryffindor table.
"I am glad to see that some of you are getting over your prejudices and getting to know people for who they really are, deciding not to listen to status's and all that other stuff." Draco saw Dumbledore's blue eyes lock on him for a moment.
"Now, I wanted to bring to all of your attention that the Christmas holiday's are around the corner, and those of you who wish to go home throughout the holidays need to write your name down on the sign up sheet that is now posted on the wall in the back of the Great Hall. If anyone has any questions or concerns feel free to contact either your Head of House or myself, as they will be able to answer any questions you may have. I feel as though I have wasted enough of your time, so students please head to your classes and have a day full of learning."
Everyone started standing up and exiting the Great Hall, making their way to classes. Draco watched as Blaise left the Great Hall with the Golden Trio, not even looking back or acknowledging him. Draco was pissed, and his mood was not improving any when he remembered that his first period was with the Gryffindors. He shuffled off in the direction towards the classroom, and spotted Blaise and the others ahead of him.
Draco grabbed his wand, and poked it out of the edge of his pocket, making sure it was barely visible to the human eye. He said a non-verbal jinx, and watched as it hit his target. Ron tripped and ended up knocking over Harry, which caused a domino effect. Hermione had not seen Harry or Ron fall, as she had been looking at Blaise and talking with him, and she ended up tripping over top of them. Blaise was the only one who didn't fall, and he looked around and spotted Draco, who had already hidden his wand and was walking forward, his face masked showing nothing.
When he approached the group, he had his Slytherin pose behind him, waiting to hear what he was going to say.
"Pathetic, the Weasel can't even seem to walk properly without harming himself and others."
"Someone tripped me!"
"Unlikely," Draco drawled. "I didn't see anyone around with their wand out, however if they did I would have awarded them house points for knocking your lot over. I had to say, it was quite amusing to watch."
Hermione was starting to get up, and Blaise offered her his hand, which she accepted graciously.
"How.. disgusting."
The Slytherins behind Draco sniggered.
"What's your problem Malfoy?" Hermione asked.
"You are, Mudblood." Draco hissed.
Hermione's eyes widened at his hostility, but she covered it easily by saying, "Grow up Malfoy. Sorry not all Slytherins are stuck up prats like you.
Draco could feel the Slytherins behind him stirring.
"Don't." He said holding up his hand.
Hermione smirked at him.
"You think you're so smart don't you Granger? What do you think is going to happen by being friends with a Slytherin? There is no benefit in it for you whatsoever. His own house has disowned him for his little stunt that he pulled this morning, and him and his family already have enough problems without a Mudblood needing to add to it."
Hermione looked over at Blaise, her face full of concern.
Blaise however, was looking at Draco dangerously.
"Just because you're pissed about something, doesn't mean you need to take it out on me."
"I'm not taking anything out on you. I am treating you how I treat all Gryffindors, since that is what you decided to associate yourself as."
"Is that what this is about Malfoy? Because I sat at a different table and not with the Slytherins?''
"You were already an outcast with the Slytherins once you befriended a Mudblood. And then you choose to go and associate with the likes of Pothead and Weasel and sit at the table of your houses enemies? What did you think was going to happen Zabini? That we were going to welcome you back with open arms?"
Blaise leaned in towards Draco.
"I don't know what the hell has got you all riled up, but I am going to get to the bottom of it. I already know it has something to do with Hermione, I'm not an idiot, and I am going to get it out of her. So maybe you yourself should be careful." Blaise said warningly, but only loud enough so Draco could hear.
Blaise shot the rest of his house a look, before turning around and walking back towards Hermione, who was looking at him questionably. Harry and Ron were shooting Draco murderous looks, but after being coxed by Hermione, they turned around and headed to class.
Draco watched his best friends retreating figure walking alongside his worst enemies and he spat on the floor.
