When Draco entered the classroom, he had expected to see Blaise sitting with the Gryffindors, but to his surprise, he was sitting in his usual spot, at the back of the classroom where he and Draco sat.
Draco saw an empty seat next to Theodore, and sat beside him, avoiding Blaise.
"Malfoy," Nott said nodding.
"Nott."
"To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?"
"Do you always need to question what I do?" Draco asked amused.
"You know I do," Nott said slapping Draco on the back.
"It's been a while," Nott stated.
"It has. You can thank Dumbledore for that. Choosing me as the Head Boy and partnering me up with the Mudblood."
"What's going on with that anyways? I noticed that you've been spending a lot more time with her lately."
"Yeah, well I didn't exactly have a choice in the matter. Was doing my duties as Head Boy."
"Sounds fun."
Draco snorted. "Yeah, sure."
"So what's with Blaise?" Theo questioned.
"What do you mean?" Draco asked cautiously.
"His whole display in the Great Hall this morning. Were you two love birds arguing and he was trying to piss you off or something? I'm assuming you two are fighting considering you chose to sit with me over him."
"Oh shut up Nott."
Theodore smirked.
"Me and Blaise are not lovebirds you git."
"Could have fooled me."
"Shove it Nott."
"Oh, how I've missed your company."
"Look who's being the lovebird now."
Theodore smirked. "But seriously, the Slytherin dorms haven't been the same without you man. We used to have so much fun together. You should stop by every now and again, keep things interesting. The place is boring without you around."
"You can just say outright that you miss me Nott," Draco stated cockily.
"You know those words would never pass through these kissable lips of mine Malfoy."
Draco laughed.
"Always the cocky one, aren't you Nott?"
"Says the King of cockiness!"
"What can I say?" Draco said smirking.
Professor McGonagall walked in, and cut off any response from Theodore. McGonagall, like Snape, was a teacher who always got the immediate attention of the classroom without even having to do anything.
"Today, we will be working a complex spell, one that I am sure many of you have never used."
A few murmurs ran through the classroom and McGonagall waited for it to die down.
"Today, we will be practicing Human Transfiguration. Like I said, this spell is complex and if it is not done properly things can go badly wrong, so please read through the description of how to cast this spell very carefully. I am not expecting all of you to be able to complete this spell successfully straight away, but with time you should be able to successfully do this spell, turning your partner into an animal that will best represent their personality. You do not get to choose the type of animal that your partner will turn in to, the spell does that for you depending on the personality of your partner, so naturally, no one person should be the exact same animal. It will be interesting to see what animal each of your personalities best relate to."
The class started whispering to their partners in excitement.
"Now, choose your partners wisely and begin," McGonagall said.
"Nott?"
"Yes Malfoy, I'll be your partner," Theodore said batting his eyelashes at Draco.
Draco rolled his eyes and grabbed and opened his textbook to the page about Human Transfiguration, studying the wand movements and incantations needed to complete the spell, Theodore doing the same.
Blaise had been watching Draco from the moment he walked past him and sat with Nott instead of him. Blaise wasn't surprised by Draco's behaviour. Draco had mood swings like a girl, and liked to try and get under Blaise's skin when the two of them were in a disagreement. Blaise was happy to see that Draco and Nott were talking again, the two of them hadn't talked in a while, and Nott was one of the other Slytherins that Blaise actually liked and could stand. Him, Draco and Nott had been a close-knit group throughout their last 6 years of school, and were always spending time together when in the Slytherin common room.
Ever since Blaise had become friends with Hermione, his friendship with both Draco and Theodore had become strained, because Draco didn't understood why Blaise had chosen to be friends with a Gryffindor, and a muggleborn Gryffindor at that. It was bad enough to Draco that she was in Gryffindor and friends with Harry Potter, and being a muggleborn had made it even worse in his eyes. Theodore hadn't been as mad about it as Draco, as Theodore was more level headed, and he was the type of guy who didn't really care about who was friends with who. Although he was a Slytherin, he wasn't the type who cared about blood status and which house girls were in. Theodore was a ladies man, and had been with his few share of girls from other houses, regardless of their blood type. If Theodore found a girl attractive, he would pursue her regardless of her background, something that Blaise had respected in him.
But, since Theodore was more of a friend to Draco then Blaise, it was only natural that any form of friendship between them had become strained, as his and Draco's relationship had been strained as well. Ever since Draco had become Head Boy, he hadn't been spending much time with either of them. Blaise and Theodore would occasionally chat in the common room if their paths crossed, but that was about it.
He looked around at the other Slytherins, all who had chosen to pretty much ignore him completely ever since his friendship with Hermione had become public. As much of an ass that Draco could be when it came to his friendship with Hermione, he had still stuck by Blaise's side, making sure to let it known how disapproving he was of the friendship. Blaise had been expecting it, and had learned to not let what Draco said bother him. Draco had been brought up in a rough environment at home, and Blaise knew that it was hard for Draco to look past the pretenses that had been drilled into his head since he had been able to walk and talk. Blaise had been there for Draco through everything, and thought that had Draco been brought up in a different living environment, he would have been a lot different and not as reserved in his beliefs. He knew that Draco was an emotional bloke, he had seen Draco cry on multiple occasions throughout the years, and had seen a side of Draco that nobody else had. It was for these reasons that Blaise had stuck around, regardless of the things that Draco had said.
Blaise saw Theodore look back at him, and Blaise nodded his head, which Theodore returned.
Draco turned in his seat to see who Theodore had acknowledged, and quirked an eyebrow at Blaise before turning his back to him again.
Blaise felt someone slide in the seat next to him.
"Hey, want to be partners?" Hermione asked.
Blaise smiled at her and said "Potter and Weasley didn't ask you?"
"Of course they did, but I told them just to partner up with each other."
"Well in that case, I guess I'll be your partner. I mean, you turned down your best friends just for me," Blaise said with a wink.
"Oh shut up Zabini," Hermione said laughing.
"I mean, when the smartest witch of our age decides she wants to be my partner, how could one dream of saying no? Besides, at least I know I won't lose an arm or a leg or something while you transfigure me into my inner animal."
Hermione blushed.
"A simple yes Hermione I'll be your partner could have sufficed."
"Yeah, but what's the fun in that?" Blaise said winking.
Hermione shoved Blaise, and grabbed her textbook out of her bag, placing the book in between them. She started studying the spell, and Blaise followed suit.
Draco had heard the slam of a textbook from behind him, and had turned to find Hermione and Blaise sitting close together, sharing a textbook. Draco felt a pang of anger well up inside of him, and turned back around.
Theodore quirked an eyebrow at him, but made no comment.
"You ready Nott?" Draco asked.
Hermione looked up from the text, and waited for Blaise to finish. He looked up a few seconds after her, and smirked.
"Think you can handle the spell?"
Hermione raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. "Do you think you can handle a spell this complex?"
"Well, I guess we will have to see now won't we."
"I guess so!"
"So do you want to try the spell first, or do you want me to?" Blaise asked, knowing her answer before she even said it.
"I want to try first."
Blaise smirked and said "Well then, let's see my inner animal."
Hermione pointed her wand at Blaise and said "Transfirio humaniro"
Where Blaise was standing, a black panther was in his place.
"Congratulations Miss Granger, for being the first one to successfully transfigure your partner into an animal. 10 points to Gryffindor!" McGonagall stated proudly.
Hermione smiled as the class all turned to examine her work.
Harry and Ron smiled at her and gave her a thumbs up, and Draco growled and spun back around, annoyed that she had once again been the first student in the class to do the spell properly.
Hermione did the counter curse, and Blaise was standing in front of her again.
"So, was I a sexy panther or what?" Blaise asked winking.
Hermione laughed. "You're an idiot."
"Alright, my turn."
Hermione looked at him nervously.
"What, you don't trust me?"
"I do, I just know the consequences behind doing the spell incorrectly, and it's not exactly fun.."
"Hermione, trust me. Do you think I would use a spell on you that I wasn't comfortable doing?"
Before Hermione could respond, there was some oohing and aweing from the Slytherin side of the classroom. Hermione looked towards the noise, and saw Draco, who was now standing across from a Siberian tiger.
Draco stood there, basking in all the attention from his fellow housemates. He must have felt Hermione's eyes on him, and he smirked at Hermione cockily.
Hermione shrugged, and turned her attention back to Blaise.
Draco's smirk wiped off of his face when she turned away from him, indifferent. Draco had not seen Blaise watching the entire scenario, a knowing smirk on his face.
Blaise raised his wand and an owl was flying in the spot that Hermione had currently occupied. Blaise waved his wand again, and Hermione was back.
"Well done Mr. Zabini," McGonagall stated.
Draco scowled as he watched the whole thing. Of course the old hag would congratulate Blaise now that he was practically a Gryffindor. Had she said anything when he had been the second student to perfect the spell? No. She had ignored him completely, even though he knew that she had seen his work.
"Thanks Professor," Blaise said.
"Thanks Professor," Draco mimicked to himself in a girly voice.
Theo let out a roar beside him, and Draco raised his wand and transfigured Theo back into his human form.
Theo raised his wand, and said the spell, and Draco turned into a white wolf.
Since Hermione and Blaise had both perfected the spell, they had sat down at their seats and were watching the other students, who were still unsuccessful with transfiguring their partner into an animal. Hermione had been watching Theo intently, wondering what kind of animal Draco was going to turn into. She had been hoping that Draco would have been turned into a ferret since she had missed the time Professor Moody had changed him into one to teach him a lesson.
She giggled as she pictured Draco as a bouncing ferret like Harry had described to them.
Blaise quirked an eyebrow, but continued to watch Hermione, who had her eyes on Draco.
When Hermione had seen Draco turn into a wolf, she had been disappointed, but yet intrigued at the same time. She watched as Draco in his wolf form looked around. Their eyes met, and Hermione couldn't tear her eyes away. Their eyes remained locked for a few seconds, before Draco's attention was called away when Thedore started muttering the counter curse. Seeing Draco back in his human form snapped Hermione out of her trance, and she looked over at Harry and Ron, who were both still having problems with the spell. She was about to go over and give them pointers, but McGonagall started speaking.
A scream erupted, and everyone looked over to see what happened. Neville had tried to do the spell, and had clearly done it wrong, as Pansy Parkinson, who had ended up partnered with Neville, was standing there with one leg in human form, the other in animal.
"You idiot!" Screamed Pansy.
"Miss Parkinson, that is enough!" McGonagall stated.
"Look at my leg!"
"I…I'm s….sorry! I did…didn't m..mean to!" Neville said shaking.
"Of course you didn't bloody well mean to you idiot!" Pansy yelled angrily.
"Miss Parkinson!" McGonagall snapped. "That is enough!"
She waved her wand, and Pansy's leg returned back to normal.
"Professor, I'm so sorry," Neville said, tears in his eyes.
"Alright class, that is enough for the day. Those of you who were unsuccessful in completing the spell successfully, I want a six page report explaining why you were not able to complete the spell, explaining what you did differently compared to the instructions given. I also want the negative outcomes that can arise without doing this spell completely; one small example has already been displayed in this classroom. I do not want anybody practicing this spell outside of class, as I will not be around to correct any wrongdoings. If I find out any students have been practicing this spell outside of the classroom, you will be given immediate detention, and house points will be deducted."
There were groans from all of the students except Hermione, Blaise, Theodore, and Draco.
"And I know who the four people were who were able to complete this spell correctly, so don't try to pull a fast one on me otherwise you will receive a failing grade in my class. You are at your Newt level, and I expect each and every one of you to know what you are doing, and to do the work that is required. If you feel that I am being unfair, then you have a chance to leave my class right now, and instead of a fail, it will say that you have withdrawn from this class on your transcript."
Some of the students looked around at one another nervously but everyone stayed put.
"Very well. I am expecting all of your papers to be handed in next class at the beginning of the period. Make sure you study the wand movements and the proper pronunciation of the spell, as you will be tested on this again in our next class. You may go."
Harry and Ron had made their way over to Hermione's table as she was putting her last items in her bag.
"Do you believe this?" Ron asked appalled.
"Believe what?" Hermione asked as they made their way out of the classroom together.
"That McGonagall is making us write a six page essay on this spell!"
"I don't see anything wrong with it," Hermione stated.
"Well of course you don't, because you don't have to write it!" Ron argued.
"Oh Ronald, it's only six pages, that's nothing. We've had to write longer essays on topics with less information. This essay is easy, all you need to do is copy down the instructions of how to do the spell correctly from the textbook, and compare it to what you did wrong. Then just explain what you can do differently next time in order to do the spell correctly."
"God Granger, I don't know how they put up with you rattling on about homework as though it's your lover."
Hermione turned around and came face to face with Malfoy.
"Shut your mouth Malfoy," Ron said dangerously.
"Awh Granger, your boyfriend is sticking up for you. How cute."
"Sod off Malfoy," Ron said, his ears turning red.
Draco smirked.
"Come on guys, let's go," Hermione said turning her back on him.
"Yes, make sure you all follow the Mudblood, merlin knows you lot would be nowhere without her help. Hell, I'm surprised you two were able to make it into any Newt classes, but then again if I had Granger doing all my homework for me, that wouldn't be overly hard."
Ron took a step forward, but Harry grabbed his arm.
"It's not worth it Ron. He wants a reaction."
"Well, well. Potter being level headed. Who knew…"
"Are you done now Malfoy?" Hermione asked annoyed.
"I will never be done making fun of you pathetic Gryffindors," Draco stated.
"Pathetic?" Hermione asked laughing. "Says the guy who picks pointless fights with people in the hallway to try and feel better about himself."
Draco's eyes narrowed.
"Let's go," Hermione said turning her back on him.
Draco watched as she walked away with Harry and Ron.
Draco looked over at Blaise, who had stood by the sidelines watching the scene unfold, a smirk on his face.
"What are you looking at Zabini?" Draco snapped.
Blaise shrugged his shoulders and started walking away.
Draco told his posse to head to class, as he caught up with Blaise.
Blaise looked over at Draco and quirked an eyebrow. "What do you want Draco?"
"What the hell is wrong with you Zabini!"
"Nothing is wrong with me."
"Like hell there isn't!"
"You're the one who seems to have the problem Draco."
"And what is that supposed to mean?"
"You're the one who decided to ignore my existence all morning, choosing to sit with Nott. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that the two of you are friends again."
"Nott hasn't decided that he would rather be a Gryffindor than a Slytherin."
"Draco, if I had wanted to be a Gryffindor, do you not think that the Sorting Hat would have placed me there?"
"Could have fooled me," Draco snapped.
"I don't see what the big deal is. So what, I had breakfast at a different table. Dumbledore didn't seem overly upset about it, so why should you?"
"Of course the old prat isn't mad about it! Did you see his face? He loved it. I bet he just loves seeing all that house unity bullshit that he's been prattling on about since our first year."
"It's not bullshit Draco."
"You are being brainwashed by the Mudblood and her posse."
"I am not being brainwashed Draco, I learned to think for myself, and gather my own opinions about people compared to listening to the stuff that I was taught to believe."
"If you are going to continue to be friends with the Mudblood, then we can no longer associate," Draco stated suddenly.
Blaise stopped walking and looked at Draco.
"Are you telling me to choose between my two best friends?" Blaise asked.
"How do you even have to think about who you would choose?" Draco demanded. "We have been best mates since childhood, the choice should be obvious."
"Hermione treats me like a true friend, and doesn't make me choose between my friendship between you and her. She accepts that I am friends with both of you, and doesn't push me on the manner. Nor does she spend every minute going about how horrible of a person that she thinks you are when we are together. In fact, we hardly speak about you at all, and actually talk about things and have a good time together."
"And what is that supposed to mean?" Draco asked darkly.
"Ever since you found out that me and Hermione are friends, you have spent almost every minute making fun of her and her blood status while we have been together. Not only that, but you continuously insult me saying that I am mental and whatever else you've said about me just because I've chosen to be friends with her. I understand that you can't get past your prejudices, but I can and as my friend you should respect my decisions."
"I just want you to realize that you are making a mistake!"
"The only mistake I am making is continuing to think that you are capable of being a better person."
"And what exactly is that supposed to mean Zabini?"
"That you will finally start thinking for yourself Draco. Regardless of what you say, I know that you don't 100% agree with the lies that your father has been putting into your head. I have seen it with my own eyes. When Hermione was attacked and you were assigned to making sure that she was alright, I saw a different side of you. You started seeing that Hermione was a person, just like you and I. Deny it all you want, but I know you Draco, I've seen the way you look at her, and it isn't full of hate and resentment like it used to be. Just like I've seen how she looks at you, and I know that you both like and care about each other, regardless of if you want to admit it or not. I don't know what has been happening with you two behind closed doors, but I can guarantee that something happened that has set you off and made you close yourself back up and revert to your old ways."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Draco said smoothly, too smoothly.
Blaise shook his head. "It's okay to like her Draco."
"I do not like her!"
"You are both so bloody stubborn it's infuriating."
"And you're a bloody idiot!"
Blaise smirked.
"What are you smirking about?" Draco demanded.
"Just how alike the two of you are."
"I am nothing like her!" Draco snapped.
"Well you are both horrible liars, and more stubborn than anyone I have ever met."
"I am not!"
"Why don't you tell me what's really bothering you Draco."
"What's bothering me is how you are trying to play matchmaker between me and the Mudblood. It is never going to happen!"
"What's never going to happen?" Blaise questioned.
"Me and her!"
"And why is that?"
"Because she's a Mudblood, and I'm a Pureblood and it's not allowed to happen!"
"That's the best you've got? That you guys can't happen because of your difference in blood status? What about; it will never happen because we hate each other? I didn't hear that in your little rant."
"I do hate her," Draco stated.
"Why?" Blaised asked.
"Because I do."
Blaise crossed his arms and looked at Draco expectantly.
"I don't have to explain myself to you Zabini."
"Of course you don't. I just find this whole argument amusing. Usually your arguments are a lot better supported compared to I hate her because I do."
"I do not have to waste my time explaining my reasoning's to you."
"I never said you had to, I am merely stating that your argument is not well supported, and therefore I don't believe a word of what you are saying."
"You're bloody mental."
"And you're a pain in my ass."
Draco smirked.
"Now, can you tell me what's going on before I find out another way?"
"There's nothing to find out."
"Alright fine. Then it shouldn't bother you that Hermione and I are meeting up after dinner to discuss some matters."
Blaise studied Draco and saw something flash in his eyes, but he masked it quickly and said, "Why would it bother me?"
"I'm not saying it will, but I just wanted to inform you that me and her are going to be having a pretty intense chat tonight. I've pretty much figured out that something transpired between the two of you, and I am going to get to the bottom of it."
"Why can't you just mind your own business?" Draco snapped.
"Because you know me, and know that I can't do that."
"Well maybe you should learn to!"
"Why? Did something happen that you don't want me to know about Draco?'' Blaise asked knowingly.
"I don't know what she is going to tell you, but I can assure you that nothing transpired between us that meant anything to me."
"So you're admitting that something happened?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to."
"You are fucking infuriating!" Draco exclaimed angrily.
Blaise smirked.
"Whatever she tells you, don't look into it Blaise. Mistakes happen, and you live and learn from them."
"So, something did happen."
"You already know something happened so stop acting like a bloody idiot!"
"Why are you so angry?" Blaise asked.
"Because it was a mistake!"
"What was a mistake?"
"Everything!"
Blaise looked at him, waiting for Draco to continue.
"We kissed. Are you happy?" Draco snapped.
Blaise kept his face neutral.
"So, let's hear it Zabini, I know you're just dying to say something."
"I don't know what you're expecting me to say Draco."
"Oh I don't know. How about how you were right? That I did start seeing her as an actual person, compared to the annoying Mudblood know it all that I grew up to hate."
"What changed your mind?"
"I don't know! One minute I hated her and despised her existence, and next thing you know I'm saving her life on multiple occasions, and not even thinking twice about it! And then, she has to start acting all Grangery towards me, and I felt bad for her. I remember thinking that nobody deserved to be going through the shit that she was going through, regardless of who she was. And then, she ended up falling and cutting herself open, and once again I ran over to her side to make sure that she was okay and ended up healing her wounds and taking care of her. And there was blood everywhere, and it was red.. red blood just like mine and yours, and I looked at it, and it didn't make sense to me. Because she's a different blood status than you and I, which meant that her blood was supposed to be a different colour, yet it wasn't. And then what do I bloody do? I be the hero again and I carry her to her room, because I didn't want to leave her lying on the floor. I don't know why I did it, but I didn't think twice about that either. I picked her up and carried her to her room, and then what does she do? SHE ASKS ME TO STAY!"
Blaise waited for Draco to continue. Blaise knew that Draco wasn't finished, and he didn't want to stop him in the middle of his rant. He could see raw emotion on Draco's face, and knew that whatever was coming up was what had gotten under Draco's skin, and was the reason why he was acting the way he was.
"She asked me to stay. And what did I do? I STAYED. What the hell is wrong with me? I should have just left her there, but no. I stayed. And then we ended up getting into a pillow fight, and next thing you know we're kissing."
Draco stopped again, and Blaise knew that he was replaying the events in his mind.
"And then I realized that I was kissing a Mublood and I stopped. She knew exactly what I was thinking because she called me out on it and then kicked me out of her room. She kicked me out! Like I was the one to blame for everything that happened! And then she hexed me! Obviously I was pissed, and ended up saying some things that I knew I shouldn't have, but she had just hexed me. So I ended up saying something that I didn't mean."
"What did you say?" Blaise asked.
Draco looked up at him and said "I told her that it was a mistake saving her in the hallway."
Blaise shook his head "Oh Drake.."
"I tried to apologize! I didn't mean to say it. I was angry that she hexed me and excused me like I was NOTHING. And then, she told me that I was exactly like my father, that I am walking replica of him."
Blaise now understood why Draco had started to act like the old Draco.
"So you decided to act exactly like your father in order to support what she had wrongly accused you of," Blaise said softly.
"Well hell, since that's what she thinks of me then why not give her what she wants."
"Draco, I don't think that's what she wants. I think she was hurt by your reaction."
"Well too bad! Because that's what she is getting."
"I think you're going about this the totally wrong way.."
"No, I'm not. I made a mistake, and she helped me realize just how great a mistake it was. There is no way me and a Mudblood would ever be able to be anything more than enemies."
"But you were already more than enemies."
"Yeah, and look at how that turned out."
"You hurt one another's pride, and lashed out at each other saying things you know would hurt the other person. Tell me again how you and Hermione are nothing alike? Because from the sounds of it, you guys are a lot more alike than I think you realize."
"I am nothing like her Zabini. Now, this conversation is over. Forget we ever had it, because that's what I'm doing."
"Draco, you should talk to her about-"
"I am not talking to her about anything unless it regards our duties as Heads. Other than that, I want nothing to do with her."
Blaise shook his head.
Draco regained his composure, and looked over at Blaise. "Since this lovely little chat look a lot longer than necessary, we are late for class. Personally, I don't feel like walking into a class in the middle of a lecture, as it won't look good as Head Boy to disrupt, so instead, I am going to skip and head back to my dorm. I advise you do the same, so we can come up with a reason as to why we were unable to attend Herbology."
"And what is our excuse going to be?"
"I don't know, think of something won't you? And then owl me about it so we can have the same cover story," Draco said as he walked away, swishing his cloak out behind him.
