Chapter Nineteen
Theo Nott was the next person they went to speak to—Speak being a very loose definition of what the young wizard was doing. He sat stonily silent, having listened to what they had asked him and usually only grunted. Whether it was a positive or a negative to the question neither one knew, but it was quickly becoming very irritating to the both of them.
Hermione came to the end of her patience before Severus, snapped, “You do know the English language, don’t you?”
Nott’s eyes filled with humor, saying, “Of course. I even lay claim to a higher education which includes a Ph.D., but that in no way means that I’m a snitch.”
Studying him carefully, she said, “We aren’t here for the Ministry of Magic or the aurori.” This didn’t seem to convince him, as he returned to his stony faced expression. “We are currently attempting to discover who it was that attacked Lord Malfoy and attempted to kill Draco.” She stood up. “But it’s clear that this is a waste of time…”
“Hold on,” he muttered, looking over to the headmaster. “Is telling me the truth, sir?”
“She has no reason to tell you a falsehood, Mr. Nott,” he drawled. “True, you might think she is here for her friend Potter. But in truth, she has better things to do with her time these days.”
Sitting back relaxing, Theo said, “That thing being you from what I heard so far.” Looking back up to Hermione, he said, “Sit down and I’ll tell you what I know.” He ordered a tea service from a very tiny house elf and went back to speaking to them. “I arrived at the club a little after seven that evening. Draco was already there along with Zabini, Bulstrode and Goyle. Both Malfoy and Goyle were shit faced by that time. Zabini appeared to be angry for some reason I don’t know of. And from the looks of things, Bulstrode was using the two of them as a form of light entertainment. Not that I blame her in the least, as Malfoy and Goyle are fucking hilarious once you get a few drinks into them.”
“Did you drink?” Hermione asked.
“I never drink liquor in public,” he sighed. “And never in that club.”
“Why is that?” Severus inquired.
“Ever since the war I’ve found that there are some out in the world looking for any reason to toss those whom they saw as getting away with their war crimes into Azkaban for the flimsiest of reasons,” Theo said tightly as the tea service arrived. “I’m not going to be handing them the material to do it.” He served himself tea without bothering to even offer to do the same for them. Sitting back, he went back to what he recalled of that night. “Anyway, Draco was spouting this nonsense about how he was going to have you begging him for mercy by the time he was done with you. Bulstrode laughed, telling him that you were more of the type to have boys like him befuddled and in a dustbin without knowledge of how they got there in the first place. I was inclined to agree.” He looked to the headmaster, adding, “Draco has been reluctant to grow up past the emotional age of fifteen. His mother’s death hasn’t helped him and in fact has given him yet another reason to tip a bottle.” Sipping on his tea, he went on with, “He was adolescent before, now he’s just sad in a pathetic sort of way.”
“Do you recall who was in the Slytherin room?” Hermione asked.
“Certainly,” he answered. “But like I said before, I’m not an informant.”
“Do you recall if any of the people there with you in the room were or are a member of the aurori? Specifically an Unspeakable?” Severus inquired, which had Theo sitting all the straighter.
“You’re looking at a member of the aurori?” He looked from on to the other. “An Unspeakable?”
“Yes,” Hermione said quietly. “Some of the events to date lead us to believe that if they aren’t one now, they used to be.”
He nodded to this. “Well that is a difficult thing to prove, hmm?” Again he sipped on his tea, adding, “They are called Unspeakables for a reason. They don’t go about announcing what they do, do they?” He laughed to himself. “If it helps, I can tell you I’m not, nor have I ever, been an Unspeakable.”

“So what you’re saying is that you’ve gotten no where,” Lucius announced acidly.
Hermione rubbed her brow, snapping, “No, on the contrary, we’ve gotten some vital information that although it may not tell us outright who attacked you is getting us closer to what we need to know.”
“And that might be?” Lucius demanded.
“That your son is a drunk and I’m fed up with your bullshite,” she snapped. “See to it that you find your heir some help before he permanently brines his sperm and you lose the future of the Malfoy family we’re currently working very hard to preserve.”
Blushing hotly, Lucius was about to snap when Severus laid his hand on his shoulder. Leaning down, he breathed, “Don’t curse the messager.”
Lucius let out a huff, muttering, “Very well. What supposedly useful information did you find out?”
“We’ve been able to eliminate both Nott and Bulstrode as suspects,” Hermione said casually. “That may not be much, but it’s something. Theo also was able to tell us whom several of the people in the room were after we pointed out that we weren’t there to have him tell us about them. We could go speak to them in person and discover what we needed to know from the people directly.”
“And this was helpful?” he sneered.
“More than you’ve been,” Hermione came back sharply, getting to her feet. “You know, I’ve never expected you to throw me parties or even give me a heart felt thank you. But can you attempt to at least not be such a flaming arse?”
It was the reverberating slamming of the door that announced to Lucius that she had left the room. Straightening out his smoking jacket, the blond wizard asked dryly, “Was it something I said?”
Rolling his eyes, Severus went over and sat across from him saying, “If you need to ask, you’re only proving her correct.”
“Aren’t you going to go after her?” Lucius inquired.
“No, I’ll speak to her later. At the moment I have my hands full trying to figure out what has you in a worse mood than usual,” he replied, studying his long time friend. “Well?”
His lips tightened as he was saying, “I’ve been recalling more of the attack.”
“And?”
Tears filled his eyes, as he said, “She was smiling at me.”
“And why does this have you upset?”
Swallowing, he whispered hoarsely, “The attack had already begun.”

There you go. Let me know what you think that last line is all about!
Time for Famous Last Words: Movie Edition! The answers to the last one were "Addams Family Values", said by Joel Glicker (David Krumholtz) and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. A bag of Oreos goes to ChaosLady who guessed the movie. If I missed you, I'm sorry.
Here's the next quote! "Now we are free. I will see you again, but not yet--not yet." Here are your clues. Think Rome--I see warriors and a twisted emperor and slaves made to fight to the death as entertainment (oh my!). There you go. Hope you have a splendiferous day!
