Chapter 19

Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Finishing his breakfast and sending the plate to the sink to be washed, Harry leaned against Sirius as he sipped his milk, looking at the list his godfather and Remus were compiling of all they had to do, for not only his schooling, but other things as well. Right now, the two were trying to plan out what all they had to get and needed for several things. “What are we going to work on first?” He asked as Sirius began to divide up all that they had listed into two columns.
“Well, since we have the list for the books that you need for the term, I’m not real worried about that now. Other than the one for Defense, because we're sure as hell not going to use the one on that list,” Sirius told him, reaching over to ruffle Harry's hair. “I think we're going to send you to the Alley with Snape and Remus to pick up what's needed there and anything else that comes along with it.”“I would suggest that we need to worry about a couple other things first. Such as cleaning out this house and binning what is dangerous. We also need to clean out a room in the basement to convert to a Potions lab. Those are going to take time,” Remus said, looking over his copy of the list. Frowning, he said, “I think we need to get with Severus to see just what supplies we need for the terms assignments. I'm sure, if we ask, he'll give us a rundown of what he plans to teach this year.” Stopping and thinking it over, he added, “If we ask Minerva, we can probably get that from all the teachers, save the Defense one. That might be the way to go here.”“It is,” Sirius nodded, shifting the list around some more. Thinking it over, he said, “I still have my Defense books from school in my trunk. Those were decent enough. Maybe we should just use them.”“Good idea,” Remus nodded. “When Severus gets here we'll see if he has any suggestions. He knows better than we do where you are in this area, Harry. When we get the packet of what we need to cover for the OWLs, we'll have a better feel for what we need to go over with you.”
“Remind me to see if he has doxy-cide and the antidote for it,” Sirius said distractedly. “Most of the curtains in this shitehole are infested with them. We really need to get on cleaning before we do much else to make sure everything is safe and we don't have to avoid certain areas.”Crossing his legs on the bench and looking at the list Sirius was working with, Harry asked, “How long is cleaning going to take?”Snorting, Sirius grinned, “Forever. This place is bad. Between the three of us, though, we should manage quickly. Then we'll see about replacing some of the furnishings with something far nicer looking. It's not going to be fun, that's for damned sure, but you'll get a good lesson in pest control with it.”“I can work with that,” Harry nodded, finishing his milk and sending the glass to the sink.“I think we should take on teaching you some of the basic household, cleaning and helpful charms too, Harry. Those are something you'll use quite often,” Remus said with a smile, looking at the young man.“I'd like to learn those,” Harry admitted. Picking up the letter and official notice that he got earlier from his solicitor and the Ministry, he looked them over again then said, “This shouldn't be bad from what his letter tells me. If it's as he says, it won't take long and we'll get it.”“I don't anticipate a problem,” Remus told him, looking in his direction. “Severus and I are just supposed to keep watch on you a couple of hours a day, nothing more. That we can easily manage.”“It's nothing to worry about,” Sirius told him, looking at the letter. “You'll get it. Snape needs the official confirmation, of course, so he can show up each week and make it to where Albus has to honor it. That's the biggie right there. You trust both of them, and have said that, so I think that's all you're going to need.”Nodding, Harry changed topics, “I was wondering if once a week someone could take me to a shopette close by to pick up some munchies? I'm used to getting out during the summer and am rather fond of my junk food.”“I think we can manage that, Harry,” Sirius grinned. “'Cause if all your snacks taste as good as the one I tried last night, you're going to be sharing them!”
Smiling at that, Remus chuckled then said, “We can do that, Harry. We'll just pick a day Severus is around to go. Sirius can tag along as Padfoot. That way we're safe.”“What am I getting roped into? I want to know before you finalize plans, Lupin,” Severus said as he came in. Taking a seat by Lupin at the table and summoning a cup of coffee, he took a sip of it then looked around, saying, “With you lot, it's mandatory that I know before I agree to it.”Laughing, Sirius filled him in about Harry's request then said, “Nothing dangerous or strange there.”“We can do that. It'll do you good to get out as well,” Severus nodded. “There's one only a couple blocks from here we can go to.”Holding the list out for Severus to see, Remus gave a rundown of what they were talking about. “We were wondering about Defense the most, when it comes to the schooling. Any suggestions there for us?”Taking the list and looking it over, Severus then looked at Harry and said, shaking his head, “I'm going to say, when it comes to Defense, press on to the next level. I believe Harry has everything one should learn for his OWLs down pat already, except, maybe, a couple small things that will show when you get the official packet. My suggestion there is to start working on non-verbal spells and what is needed beyond this year. Though I agree; the books we used are good for this. Let me take a look and see what I can find that might be more up to date on some better spells. And I'll get the syllabus from everyone so you know what to work from. They'll give it up easily enough.” Looking at the list, he said, distractedly, “As the year stretches on, we're going to have to figure out what to do about career counseling. That's something done this year as well.”“I forgot all about that,” Remus sighed, shaking his head.“With you being in place as someone overseeing him, you should be able to handle that, Snape. After all, you do it for your own house,” Sirius said, taking a sip of his own coffee.“Yes, true,” Severus nodded firmly. “I'll do that when the time comes.”“I think, maybe, we might have the standard equipment for a Potions lab downstairs somewhere, we'll just have to hunt for it. Can you get us a list of everything we're going to need so we know we have it? We're trying to get all this in place before the start of term so we don't have to scramble after that,” Sirius told the man, looking in his direction.“When you find what you have, I'll take a look and make recommendations,” Severus told him. “I'll also ensure that you have all the ingredients you need, beyond the standard ones you pick up at the start of term.” Seeing the nods, he pressed on, glancing at the list, “I have the pest cleaning supplies as well. Molly had asked for them when she talked about doing it, so they're already assembled. I'll bring them over tomorrow.”“When you get time—we'd like some help with the charms on that damned painting and the tapestry. You haven't looked at it yet. I want the things down and chucked out. I think it's a permanent sticking charm of some kind, I just don't know which one,” Sirius said.“I'll take a look when you start cleaning,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “I would also suggest you get Bill to look as well. He may know.”“We will,” Remus said. “Anything else you can think of that we need, Severus? For school anyway. We aren't as worried about the house as we'll handle that as it crops up.”Looking over the list again, Severus shook his head, “No, not that I can see. I think you have it all covered. I'm sure we missed something, as that always happens, but we'll handle it as it comes.”“Good, we'll press on to the nightmare that is this house,” Sirius said, relieved, looking at his own list.Listening in, as the three talked about what to do with cleaning, Harry looked up, brow furrowed, when he heard someone else coming, wondering who it was. So far, the only one that came over regularly was Snape, so he was curious. He relaxed, though, when Bill came in. Nodding to the man, he said, “Hey, Bill.”“Hi, Harry,” Bill said, smiling a little. After greeting everyone else and grabbing a cup of coffee, Bill sat on the other side of Remus. Looking at the young man leaning against Sirius, he felt his gut clench. His parents had told him just what poor Harry had gone through, and how bad the situation was. There was a lot of guilt over that among the adults of the Weasley clan, including him even though he hadn't been around much. They were the only ones that knew now, as they hadn't told anyone that was school aged. He also felt bad that the young man felt he couldn't trust any of them. That was understandable, of course, but it still felt rotten. Quietly, he said, “Harry—I--” but he stopped when Remus nudged him. Looking at the man and seeing him shake his head firmly, Bill got the hint.
“Yeah?” Harry asked, looking up from the list and gazing at Bill.Changing tracks, Bill said, “Mum wanted to know if you have a preference as to what kind of cake you want for your birthday. We'll all be here, of course, but she wanted an idea if you had something in particular in mind you wanted.”“Anything is good with me,” Harry shrugged. “Your mum makes the best cakes, so whatever she does will be great.”“I'll tell her that,” Bill smiled, nodding. “Any particular flavor you like most?”Thinking that over, Harry said, “I like yellow cake. That's good.”“I'll pass that on,” Bill told him. Looking around, he said, “We heard you're going to start working on cleaning the house this week.” Seeing the nods and hearing the affirmation, he said, “Fred and George offered to come over to lend a hand during the day. One of us will bring them home, of course. Up to all of you.” Lowering his voice, he said, grinning, “I think mum wants them out from under foot, actually. They'll be a big help though if you want it.”
Snickering at that thought, Sirius said, “Yeah, they can help. The more bodies the better with this. It'll help keep them out of trouble.”Laughing at that, Bill nodded, “I'll let her know. We'll make sure to send you a message before we bring them over so you're prepared for the insanity.” Looking back at Harry, he inquired, “Dad wanted to know if there was anything in particular you wanted for your birthday? Like something special?”“I'm good,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “They don't need to get me anything. I have almost everything I need and can't think of anything I really want.”“We'll find you something good, Harry,” Bill assured him, smiling.“While we have you here—can you take a look at the tapestry and painting to see what charms might be on them? We're going to attempt to get them down,” Remus told him.“I will,” Bill said with a firm nod. “Let's do that now, in fact. It might take me a while to come up with something.” Standing, he motioned for Remus to follow.
Once Bill finished examining at the tapestry, Remus said, quietly, “I really wouldn't bring any of the mess from court yesterday up to Harry, even to apologize. At least not right now. It's, obviously, a touchy subject with him. And he really doesn't want anyone to know, beyond the ones that already do.”
“I didn't think of that,” Bill sighed, shaking his head.“I assumed,” Remus told him with a nod. “Just—please don't. Sirius, Severus and I are going to have a hard enough time working with what's here as it is. We don't need Harry to realize just how many know what he was subjected to. And he sure doesn't want those he is friends with to hear about this. That will only make the situation worse.”“I agree there,” Bill told him, looking at the man. “I'll say something to mom and dad. The younger ones don't know yet, not even that Harry isn't going back to Hogwarts. That's something they are going to have to discuss and explain, at least a little. I don't think any of us thought how hard this might be on Harry's end.”“That's something everyone needs to keep in mind,” Remus told him gently, though pointedly. “The more people coming in here trying to make this up to him, the more he's going to realize how many know, then he'll get upset. We need to just make sure everyone acts normally. To work with the trust part, you're going to need to do what you normally do, not try to make up for failings on all our ends. That's not going to help anything.”“I'll pass that on,” Bill told him, folding his arms over his chest, looking down at the floor. “I think it's all our instincts to try to apologize by actions. Remus—I don't think any of us know what to do here, I really don't. Mum—she's had more than one bout of tears over this and is beating herself up over things she felt she should have seen. Dad is just sick over what he heard. He's angry, upset and doesn't know what to do to help the situation. It's not anything either of them have had to deal with before and they're lost. I don't know what to do either. I mean—what do you say to Harry after hearing what we have? We don't know.”“You don't talk about it,” Remus schooled softly. “We aren't. Severus, Sirius and I apologized to him once. That's all. We've assured him he comes first, before anything that's being planned for him or what others may want. Then we've moved on to normal subjects, like what you heard when you came in. Leave it is my suggestion. Quietly, alone, not in front of everyone, someone can say something to him. Assure him you're trying to help and mean it. Maybe add that if he wants to talk, you'll listen. Then move on. Let Sirius and Severus work with him. Those are the two he has the best relationship with. They can do things with him the rest of us can't. He’s going to have to face some of it as Petunia and Vernon are being prosecuted for the crimes, and he’s going to have to show up in court for it. So, he's going to have to keep reliving part of this. Let us work with him to get him calm before anyone even attempts to talk to him about it.”“Yeah, good idea there,” Bill admitted with a nod. Lowering his voice, he said, “He needs help in the form of a Mind Healer, Remus. None of us are qualified to deal with what has to be there.”“We know,” Remus admitted with a sigh and shake of the head. “I don't know how we'd manage that though. Harry knows so much that could get so many in trouble that it would be risky anyway. Then there is the idea of even trying to get him to go. I'm not sure if he would. Let us work with what's here for a while before we even broach that topic. Severus is very good at working with Harry, as I'm sure everyone knows. Let him see what he can manage. I think Harry is more apt to talk to him about some of this than the rest of us because there is more of a long-standing relationship.” Lowering his voice, he said, “Between you and me, if all of you want to do something to really help, make sure Albus stays away from Harry. The rage directed towards Albus is bad. And I don't blame Harry a bit for it. It's the one end of this that we need someone to run interference with. We really do. We know Albus, Bill, he's going to try. What that could unleash is something I don't want to ponder.”“That I'll pass along and we'll do what we can with it,” Bill told him with a firm nod. “You're right there. I'll make sure mum and dad know to tell everyone not to bring up Albus' name around Harry.”“That will help more than you know,” Remus said honestly. “Just—act normal. That’s all I can tell any of you. This is still the Harry all of you've known. He's the same person. The only difference is we now know things we didn't that probably explain some behavior he's exhibited over the years. The understanding will help us, but he's still just Harry.”“We'll keep that in mind too,” Bill told him firmly with a nod.
“I'm going to bring Lucius and Narcissa over tomorrow night at about the normal time,” Severus told the other three after Bill had left and they put up the normal detection spells to warn them if anyone came in. “She's pestering Lucius to not only see Sirius again, but to meet Harry as well. Besides, the two want to drop his birthday presents off for him.”
“That's fine,” Sirius nodded, grinning a little. “And I assume by 'pestering' you mean threatening to hex him in ways he won't like.”“Of course,” Severus smirked, looking entirely amused.Grinning at that, Harry shook his head, “Fine with me.”Smiling and shaking his head, Remus said, “We'll be ready and have the normal protections up for the visit.”“I just wanted everyone to know ahead of time to prepare.” Looking around, he asked, “Is there anything specific we need to prepare for this week, aside from Harry's birthday?”Looking at Remus, who was shaking his head, Sirius said, “Not that I know of. I'm sure something will probably come up after that bomb last night, so we need to be wary there. Beyond that, if we come across a real problem with the cleaning, we're yelling in your direction. I don't expect that as there isn't anything here we can't handle, I don't think.”“Good,” Severus nodded, folding his hands on the table. “I expect some issues, like you said. I'm going to try to pop over a couple of times a day to get in the habit. At least until school starts. With that, I plan to check in every day in the form of an owl on the days I won't be here. Any problems at all, tell me, Harry. That's going to be part of my and Lupin's responsibility here. Even if it's as simple as wanting to talk about something bothering you.”“I will,” Harry told him, leaning heavily against Sirius.“I'm going to try to get with Albus as soon as I can to figure out what he might be concocting with this mess or detect anything he might think to try to get back in Harry's good graces,” Severus said, looking around.“The only thing that's going to manage that is him exiting my life forever,” Harry snorted, shaking his head. “And we know that's not going to happen.”Slipping an arm around Harry and holding him close, Sirius shook his head, “Yeah, it's not. We'll work with whatever it is, don't worry.”“I think Bill was serious about what we discussed. I also believe Molly and Arthur are as well. If they can run interference with him, it's going to help. Honestly? I don't see Molly staying calm on the issue for long. She's not that way. Right now, she's dealing with the shock of what happened. Once that wears off, Albus needs to steer clear of her,” Remus said, smiling a little at the visions that produced.“He does,” Sirius grinned, chuckling. “We'll want popcorn and ringside seats for when she finally blows on him, because that's going to be right spectacular, better than anything we've seen up to this point.”Grinning himself at that, Harry shook his head. Sobering up, he asked, softly, “Do you think the Ministry and Prophet will back off me now or not?”Thinking that over, looking down at the table, Severus sighed then said, “Lucius would be the one to ask that question of as he's better versed in such maneuverings than any of us. I would think, maybe, they might. Especially since the forms for you to be out of Hogwarts are official. That means you're not a threat to Fudge in any way. You also won't be anywhere he can get to. His puppet in the school won't have to worry about you either. With some of what was said in court, he may ensure that everyone backs off because you're not aligning yourself with Albus in any way. The only issue that may bring it about is that memory. However, since nothing said in court can come out, unless it's leaked by someone that was there, he may leave you alone as he's not going to want to bring down on himself some of the evidence you provided. That's just a guess on my end, nothing more.”“I agree with Severus there,” Remus nodded. Quietly, he then added, “However, those that do go back this fall might make it to where you keep getting taken after if they bring your name into the mess. Like Hermione and Ron. I don't know. If you're not around to add your voice to theirs, it might keep you out of it.”“I think she's going to focus on the vocal ones,” Severus said, brow furrowed. “I hope anyway. With what was said in court and what you can prove, not to mention what was given over to Rufus and Madam Bones, Fudge may not want to poke you too much. Especially with how your solicitor is proving that he's not one to be played with. I would say that Fudge is going to go after the ones that can't take him on and who he can silence. If we play this right, you're going to stay quiet about everything. I say that's our best bet and will probably keep you out of the worst of it. Even if he does, I would say get your solicitor involved from there. All those papers you received yesterday and what Madam Bones authorized is enough to back him off. Even as foolish as he is, I don't see Fudge wanting to take on an abused child. Even if no one wants to believe the Dark Lord is back, the fact that the man is trying to slander someone that's already suffered plenty isn't going to bode well for him. He has to know that.”Looking down at the table, thinking that over, Harry nodded slowly. “Alright. Let's see what happens here. If he keeps it up, I'll contact my solicitor and sic him on the man to see what he can do.”“Get with Lucius on the topic next time you talk to him. He may have a way to either know what Fudge might be trying or to steer you in a direction to make it stop. This is more his area than ours,” Severus told the young man firmly.“We'll do that,” Sirius said firmly. “Let's see what he has to say and press on.” Looking around, he said, “Alright, I say we do a walk through around here to see where we start then get on with as much as we can. At least we take notes about what is the worst and go from there.” Hearing the affirmation from everyone, he stood and helped Harry up.
