Draco had indeed done as he had said and skipped Herbology, and met up with the rest of his house at lunchtime. He saw that Blaise had decided to sit at the Slytherin table, and Draco couldn't help the smirk that etched its way onto his face upon seeing this.
The rest of the Slytherins didn't look happy about Blaise returning to them, but Draco didn't care. Blaise had made a stupid decision, and now he had to deal with the consequences. He made his way over towards the Slytherin table, and sat next to Nott, who happened to be sitting across from Blaise.
"Fancy of you to show up Malfoy," Nott stated.
"Well I know you'd just go bat shit crazy if I stay away for too long,"
"Why weren't you and lover boy in Herbology?" Theo asked looking back and forth between Draco and Blaise.
Draco looked at Blaise and quirked an eyebrow.
"We were busy," Blaise stated simply.
Draco rolled his eyes at Blaise's poor cover.
"Busy making out in a broom cupboard?" Theo asked winking.
"Oh sod off Nott," Blaise said laughing.
"I swear, there is going to be a day where I find the two of you in a compromising position and I'm going to be able to shout: I TOLD YOU SO!"
"What is your obsession with me and Blaise anyways?" Draco questioned.
"Not an obsession, I just think your reactions are amusing."
"You're an idiot," Draco stated simply.
Theodore laughed.
"So have you two kissed and made up and are speaking to one another again?"
"Seriously Nott, I am going to punch you," Draco growled.
Theodore smirked. "Well regardless, I'm glad you two figured your shit out. You are both utterly miserable when you're in a disagreement."
"We are not!" Blaise and Draco both protested.
"And I'm a Gryffindor."
"Why did I feel the need to sit with you in class this morning?" Draco asked aloud.
"Because you missed my handsome face and my hilarious jokes?" Theo supplied.
Draco snorted.
"A bloke has gotta try," Theodore said smiling.
"Well, I'm happy that Draco did sit with you this morning, it's about time two of you rekindled your relationship," Blaise said smiling.
"Oh, not you too," Draco snapped.
Blaise and Theodore laughed.
"I don't even know why I associate with either of you gits," Draco stated.
"Because you love us?"
"Because without us your world would fall to pieces?"
"You are both impossible," Draco stated.
"Awe, doesn't it feel like old times Malfoy?" Theodore asked.
"What was I thinking, choosing to stay in my dorm room instead of having to listen to you two idiots all day?"
"You know you loved listening to us all day," Theo said.
"Oh, how could I have forgotten?"
"Well, now that the three musketeers are back together, what do you say to opening up a bottle of firewhisky and having a good time?" Theo asked.
"I'm down," Blaise stated.
Draco looked at Theo and Blaise, who were both waiting for his answer.
"Alright, alright, I'm in."
Theo slapped Draco on the back and said, "That's my boy!"
"Why do I feel like I am going to regret this?" Draco asked
Blaise smirked.
"Tonight?" Theo asked eagerly.
"It's a school night Nott," Draco stated.
"And since when does that matter?"
"Since I became Head Boy, and I don't need to go to class hungover."
"Just take a potion in the morning to cure your hangover, that's how we survived most of last year."
"And how many times did we almost get caught?" Draco asked.
"That's what made it so much fun," Theo said with a wink.
"I agreed to hanging out with you two gits, but it will have to wait until the tomorrow night. I can't just neglect my Heads duties."
"Fine. But you better not chicken out Malfoy, or I will make sure to broadcast what a giant bitch you are."
Blaise let out a bark of laughter.
Draco's retort was cut off by lunch appearing on the table in front of them. Draco started loading food onto his plate, ignoring what Theodore had said.
Blaise had found that the rest of the day had went by uneventfully. Him, Draco and Nott had been practically glued to one another's sides throughout the rest of the day, making up for the time that they had missed. Blaise knew that the three of them together drew a lot of attention from the female population of the school. Blaise knew he was an attractive dude, and knew that both Theo and Draco had a way with the ladies, and having the three of them together seemed to attract a flock of girls wherever they went.
This of course, did not go unnoticed by Hermione, who had sent him an amused look when she had passed by him in the hallway. Blaise had shrugged and winked at her, which caused a few of the girls to glare at Hermione menacingly before she disappeared from view.
Blaise had missed his male companionship. Everything was so much easier when they had all lived in the dungeons together, and Draco hadn't been made Head Boy. Head Boy duties, and then watching over Hermione had taken up most of Draco's time, and since he was staying in his own dorm, Blaise only really got to see Draco at meal times, in classes, and occasionally outside of classes. Blaise and Theo had talked on occasion, but it wasn't the same. Theo and Blaise were only friends because of Draco, and they never really hung out unless Draco wasn't around. It wasn't because they didn't like each other, because they did. Blaise and Theo got along really well, they just didn't feel right hanging out without Draco around.
After dinner was completed, Blaise made his way over to the Gryffindor table. Blaise saw Harry nod in his direction, and Hermione turned around and smiled as she saw him approaching.
"Hey," she said.
"We have a date remember?"
Ron's eyes widened. "You two are going on a date?"
Blaise could hear the jealousy in his voice.
"Not that kind of date Weasley, we are just talking."
"About what?" Ron questioned.
"Not everything is your business Ronald," Hermione said turning to him.
Ginny laughed at the appalled look on her brother's face.
"Find it funny do you?" Ron snapped.
"Kind of," Ginny said grinning.
Harry looked over at Ginny and smiled, and she leaned in and kissed him sweetly.
"Oi! Do you two really feel the need to do that in front of me?"
"What, does it bug you?" Ginny questioned, an eyebrow raised.
"Well it's not like I enjoy watching my best friend and sister snog."
"And you think we enjoyed watching you and Lav-Lav snogging like mad in the common room a year years ago?"
Harry laughed.
Ron's face turned red. "That's not the same!"
"You're right, because at least me and Harry can keep ourselves under control while surrounded by company."
Hermione couldn't help the smirk that etched its way onto her face.
"Well.." Ron said, trying to think of an argument.
"Best give it up while you can mate," Harry stated.
"Of course you're siding with her," Ron muttered grumpily.
Harry patted Ron on the back. "Sorry mate, it's in the boyfriend hand book."
"I guess being best friends means nothing around here!" Ron stated dramatically.
"You sound like a drama queen," Ginny said rolling her eyes.
"I am not a drama queen."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Ginny said smiling sweetly.
Ron narrowed his eyes at his sister.
"Oh, cheer up mate! We're only joking around," Harry said reaching across the table to shove him lightly.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
"Well, you two have fun on your date," Ginny said with a wink.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Oh, it's going to be jam packed with lots of fun."
Blaise smirked.
"Anyways, I'll catch up with you guys later?" Hermione asked.
"Of course," Harry said kindly.
"Oh, Hermione! Before I forget, we are going to be having a little…er get together tomorrow night in the Gryffindor common room." Ginny said sheepishly.
Hermione quirked an eyebrow.
"It's a Friday night Hermione, so it's not like you have to worry about classes," Harry stated.
"Oh come on Hermione, don't be a party pooper!" Ron exclaimed.
Hermione let out a deep breath. "Fine."
"So you'll come?" Ginny asked.
"Do I even have a choice?" Hermione asked.
"Not really," said Ginny honestly.
"Well then I guess you have your answer."
"It'll be fun," Harry said.
"I guess we'll just have to see about that," Hermione stated.
"Zabini, you're welcome to come as well if you would like," Ginny said looking at him.
Hermione looked at Ginny, happy tears in her eyes.
"Yeah, I mean you seem like an alright bloke," Ron said, his ears turning red.
Hermione launched herself at Ron and gave him a hug.
"Oi, Hermione get off!"
Hermione pulled back, a huge smile on her face.
"Thank you for the invitation, but as it so happens, I already have plans. It means a lot to me that you extended an invite to me," Blaise said kindly.
"You do?" Hermione asked.
"Draco, Theo and I are having a guys night."
"That sounds like fun," Ginny said smiling.
"Time will tell."
"Well, maybe next time then," Harry said.
Blaise nodded and said, "Maybe next time."
"Sounds good."
Blaise looked at Hermione. "Ready to go?"
Hermione let out a sigh. "I guess so," she said standing up and heading towards the entrance.
"Have fun you two!" Ginny shouted to their backs as they left the Great Hall.
"So," Blaise said trying to break the ice.
"Why don't you just come outright and ask what you want," Hermione stated annoyed.
"Well someone is moody."
"I am not."
"So why don't you tell me what's going on between you and Draco?"
"Who said there was anything going on between us?" Hermione asked defensively.
"Nobody said anything was, I'm just guessing."
"Well you guessed wrong."
"I don't think I did."
"What makes you say that?"
"Hermione, give me some credit," Blaise said smiling.
"I do give you credit."
"If I recall correctly, earlier this morning you agreed on telling me what was going on."
"Only to get you off my back!" Hermione exclaimed.
"So something did go on?" Blaise inquired.
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to, like I've said multiple times, you are a horrible liar."
Hermione narrowed her eyes at him.
"I know you like him," Blaise stated simply.
"Not this again.."
"Exactly, there is no point in arguing. We have already had this discussion."
"Honestly.." Hermione said shaking her head.
"Now, how about you tell me what's been going on. I am sure it links to Draco's change in attitude as of late."
"I don't know what you expect to hear from me."
"How about the truth? You know you can talk to me about anything. And if something ever was to happen between the two of you, who else could you tell? I don't think Potter or Weasley would want to hear about it, nor do I think you would want to tell them."
Hermione took a deep breath, and pushed open the Entrance Doors, leading Blaise outside. "Well, something did happen," she said slowly.
She looked over at Blaise, who nodded at her to continue.
"It happened on the night that you walked me back to my dorm and accused me of liking him. Anyways, when I went inside I went to my room, and not long after I shut the door, he knocked on it. He came to tell me that he was leaving, but that it wasn't really my business to know."
Blaise stayed quiet, waiting for her to continue.
"Naturally, we got into a heated argument, and he took a step towards me. On instinct, I stepped back and ended up colliding with the wall."
"What were you guys arguing about?" Blaise asked.
"I don't even really remember, it was over me getting captured? He told me to stay put in the dorm room while he was gone and I assured him that I didn't need his protection to keep me out of harms way, that I had Harry and Ron whom I knew would be by my side if needed. And then he got angry and stated that they hadn't been there when I got attacked in the hallway, or when I had gotten extremely sick, that he was."
Blaise quirked an eyebrow, and waited for Hermione to continue.
"And then next thing you know, he was kissing me!"
Hermione looked over at Blaise to see his reaction, but he kept his face neutral.
"And then, it was over and he was pulling back wiping his mouth off. I asked him why he kissed me, and he argued and said that he didn't. And then he said that he didn't mean to and that I mess with his head?"
"What do you mean you mess with his head?" Blaise asked trying to conceal the smirk from etching onto his face.
"I don't know. I asked him what and then he yelled at me to leave him alone and then he left. Then he came back, we talked a bit. He messed with me, I messed with him and then I went back to my room."
"Is that all?"
"Well, later that same night I guess he had decided to go for a walk because I heard the portrait hole door slam closed, and it scared me so I grabbed my wand and went to investigate and ended up tripping over the coffee table, which shattered. A piece of glass ended up going through my arm, and then next thing I know Malfoy was there. It's a little blurry because I was losing blood, but he got the glass out and healed me. I was weak, so he carried me back to my room and then.." Hermione's cheeks blazed red.
Draco had told him this part, she had asked him to stay.
"And then?" Blaise asked.
"And then I asked him to stay," Hermione said quickly.
"Sorry, I didn't catch that," Blaise said concealing his smile.
Hermione took a deep breath. "And then, I asked him to stay."
She looked at Blaise, who was looking back at her.
"What?" Hermione asked.
"Nothing." Blaise said. "Did he stay?"
Hermione nodded. "He did. Surprisingly. I didn't expect him to. I don't even know why I asked him to stay in the first place. I must have been disoriented from the amount of blood that I lost or something.."
"Are you sure that's the reason?''
"What? Yes, of course. It had to be."
"Are you trying to convince me, or yourself?"
Hermione ignored him.
"So what happened after he agreed to stay?" Blaise asked, wanting to see if Hermione would tell him what he already knew.
"Well.." Hermione said, her face flushing even more, "We ended up getting into a pillow fight? And then he ended up on top of me, and we were kissing again."
"Twice in one night?" Blaise asked with his eyebrow raised.
"Shut up, it wasn't planned!" Hermione said defensively. "Anyways, he got all Malfoy-like and I guess realized what had just happened and with who, so I told him to leave. He got all mad, saying that I was the one who had invited him to stay in the first place. And then I said that inviting him to stay had been a mistake and he agreed, and then I told him to leave again. He didn't so I hexed him after warning him that I would do so. We started yelling at each other through the door, he said kissing me was a mistake again, and I agreed, and then… and then he said.."
Hermione swallowed, fighting the emotions that were trying to overtake her.
Blaise waited patiently.
"And then he said that saving me in the hallway was a mistake," she finished softly.
She didn't say anything for a few moments, and Blaise knew that she was composing herself.
"He tried calling out to me, but I wouldn't hear it. I'd heard enough. And then I told him that I was crazy to think that he had changed, that he was the same as he had always been. An egotistical git who is just as bad as his father."
Hermione looked over at Blaise again, waiting for him to comment.
"Well, that explains why Draco is acting the way he is."
"What does?" Hermione asked confused.
"Don't you get it?"
"Get what?" Hermione asked annoyed.
"The reason Draco is acting like a complete git is because of the comment you made about his father."
"Well it's the truth!" Hermione stated.
"After everything you have seen, the changes you have seen in him-"
Blaise held up his hand, as she had been about to cut him off. Her mouth closed and he continued.
"You can't deny that you have seen a change in him. Even me, his best friend has. And the reason he is changing is because of you."
"That's barbaric."
"Is it?"
"Why would he be changing because of me?"
''Because you're opening his eyes Hermione! His father drilled into his head as an infant that he was superior over everybody else because of his last name, especially muggleborns. Draco believed his father, what child wouldn't? But now that he's getting to know you, see the real you, it's altering his opinion. You're showing him that all of the stuff his father made him believe was a lie! You're the smartest witch of our generation, and you're a muggleborn. Accorrding to Draco's father, that is not possible, yet here you stand, still the person with the highest marks."
Draco had fancied a walk after dinner, and had turned around a corner and then jumped back behind it as he saw Hermione and Blaise, in what looked to be an intense conversation. He snuck as close to the side of the wall as he could, eavesdropping on their conversation. He knew that he shouldn't eavesdrop, especially if he got caught, and was about to turn around until he heard Hermione's next words, and he felt himself rooted to the spot.
"Intelligence has nothing to do with your blood status," Hermione stated solemnly.
"I'm not saying it does. I have no prejudices against blood status, you know that."
"I know you don't."
Blaise remembered what Draco had said to him about her blood, that it had been red, the same as his. Not a different colour like he had been taught.
"I think that Draco is scared about how he feels about you."
Draco blanched at Blaise's words. What had he just said?
"How he feels… What are you talking about?"
"He likes you," Blaise stated simply.
Had Draco not had as good of footing as he did, he would have fallen out from behind his hiding spot in disbelief.
Hermione laughed. "Yeah, okay."
Draco felt himself calm down upon hearing that Hermione's response.
"I'm serious."
Draco wanted to walk around the corner and strangle his best friend. What did he think he was doing?!
Hermione stopped laughing and looked at him.
"Oh yeah? Then why was he such a git this morning?"
"Because you hurt his feelings by saying he was exactly like his father."
Hermione snorted. "Yeah, well he deserved it after what he said to me! And besides, that would mean he would actually have to have feelings."
Draco clenched his jaw angrily.
"I am not saying that what he said to you was right, but he's a person Hermione, every person has feelings."
"Every person except Draco Malfoy."
Draco couldn't help himself, he smirked at her remark.
"You are both so god damn stubborn it's unbelievable."
"I am not stubborn."
"Oh yes you are! And so is he."
"And your point?"
"That you two are so alike it's unreal."
Draco rolled his eyes.
"I am nothing like him. His definition of fun is by inflicting pain on others. You don't see me going around and making fun of people because of their blood status, or because of who their family chooses to associate with."
Draco had to give her that, she was putting up a good argument. He smirked. He wanted to see how Blaise would weasel out of this one, because what she had said was true, and she would never go out of her way to make a point of insulting someone's families or blood status like he did. Unless it was directed towards him, but those insults were well deserved.
"I didn't say that you are completely alike. But you have a lot of similarities whether you want to admit them or not. And it is obvious that you both like each other, everything else put aside. And don't try to tell me you don't like him, because I know you do."
Draco stopped breathing. Was it true? Did she like him?
"Okay, so maybe I saw a side of him that I liked. But he is Draco Malfoy, and there is no way that anything would ever happen between us."
Draco allowed some air to enter his lungs. He couldn't believe it. He had expected her to laugh or deny the accusation, but she didn't. Instead, she had pretty much admitted that she did fancy him. What the hell was going on?
"But something already has happened between you guys, twice."
"And look where that got us! Trust me Blaise, it's better for everyone if we just pretend like this never happened."
Draco felt a pang in his chest. Even though he had pretty much said the exact same thing to Blaise, it felt different hearing it from Hermione.
"You think you can do that? Because I saw the way you two looked at each other this morning."
"I…I umm-"
"You clearly feel a connection to him, and I think he feels it for you as well."
Draco narrowed his eyes. He had never once said anything to Blaise about feeling a connection to her. Stupid Blaise and his stupid matchmaking games, he was going to kill him.
Hermione threw up her hands in exasperation.
"So you're not denying that you feel some sort of attraction or connection to him."
"Of course he's attractive! Every girl at this school knows that, and I would be lying if I denied it."
Draco's eyes widened. Had he just heard her right? Did she just openly admit that she found him attractive? Draco knew that he was a good looking guy, but he never would have dreamed hearing those words coming out of Hermione's mouth.
"So you are attracted to him," Blaise stated simply with a smirk.
"Oh shut up Blaise and stop looking at me like that. You already know I'm attracted to him and just wanted to hear me say it."
"I just wanted you to admit it out loud."
"And what is that going to do for me?"
"Maybe make you realize that there's nothing wrong with being attracted to him. You're a girl Hermione, and Draco as you said, is a good-looking guy. It is natural to be attracted to him. And I know you, and you like intelligence in a guy. Sorry to say it, but Draco is second to you in grades, which I am sure you are aware of."
Hermione let out a deep breath.
"Well even if you are right, it doesn't matter Blaise."
Draco could hear the defeat evident in her voice, and his stomach twisted.
"What do you mean?"
"It doesn't matter whether or not I like him, he is never going to admit that he likes a Mudblood-"
Draco cringed for the second time upon hearing her referring to herself by that.
"It doesn't matter that when he kissed me, it was unlike anything I have ever experienced before-"
Draco felt his heart rate pick up rapidly.
"And you want to know why?"
"Why?" Blaise asked, knowing she was waiting for him to question her.
"Because it would never work. We would have to hide our relationship, because I know he would not openly promote being in a relationship with someone like me. Even if he does like me, which I highly doubt he does, he will never admit it. And I can't be with someone who is always going to be fighting an internal battle with themselves over being with me, kissing me one minute to insulting me the next. I don't deserve that."
Draco felt her words hit him like a brick wall because she was right. He would not walk through the halls of the school promoting their relationship because it would ruin his reputation. His reputation that he had worked so hard at building. And he knew that if someone had asked him if he had feelings for her, he would never admit it. His conversation with Blaise this morning proved that.
Hearing enough, Draco turned around and walked away.
Blaise heard something from behind them, and he turned and looked. He thought he caught the sight of platinum, but it could have just been the snow playing tricks with his eyes.
"Well, you seem to have made your mind up about this."
"I have."
"I just wish that you would give him a chance."
"Blaise," Hermione said smiling. "Even if I did, do you think that he would allow me the opportunity to do so? If I walked up to him right now and told him how I felt, how do you think he would react?"
Blaise knew exactly how Draco would act. He would end up doing something that would push her away because that's what he did. He didn't like people getting close to him, and Draco didn't really know how to deal with emotions, and having them sprung on him like that would make him become defensive.
Hermione took in his silence in understanding.
"Exactly, he wouldn't react well. Trust me Blaise, leaving things the way they are is the best for everyone."
Blaise didn't know what to say, so he shrugged.
"You ready to head back inside? It's getting kind of cold out here."
Blaise nodded and the two of them headed back into the school, leaving their conversation behind them.
