Chapter Twenty
“She what?” Hermione asked, spinning to face Severus. “Did he say just how she smiled?”
He looked up from his newspaper, giving her a flat stare that said it all. Of course Lucius hadn’t said a word about how or even why. That would have been expecting too much.
“Sarcasm wasn’t called for,” she said mildly, walking over to the breakfast table.
“I didn’t say anything,” he pointed out to her.
“No you didn’t, but you’re the master of more than potions, Severus. Sarcasm comes as naturally to you as breathing and you needn’t say a word to get it across.” Setting her plate down on the table, she murmured, “Have you tried legilimency on him?”
Frowning he said, “With everything that’s been happening I thought it was another trauma he didn’t need. But now that we’ve come this far, we just might have to regardless.”
“You would have had to in order to find out more about the attack anyway,” she said quietly. “Now more than ever.”
He tossed the Prophet aside. “I know, but it doesn’t make it any easier.” Severus looked over to her, saying, “Given everything else he has refused to do, Lucius will more than likely not allow it at all.”
She nodded in agreement. “He does cherish his privacy, but deep down he must want some answers—why else would he have recalled that bit about his wife smiling after the attack had begun?”
A thoughtful look crossed his face. “Perhaps it isn’t Lucius putting a stop to the recall?”
“Meaning?” she asked.
“He can’t recall anything but the attack,” he reminded her. “Whose to say that memory is all that it’s cracked up to be?”
Worrying her lower lip, she murmured, “Could it be planted?”
“Perhaps part of it is, but I don’t think the entire memory is,” he said mostly to himself. “He wouldn’t have been able to recall Narcissa smiling when she did otherwise.”
“I think it might be a good idea for you to help me improve my occlumency skills.”
He took her hand, wishing he could say something to the negative. But she was correct in her plans to protect herself. After all, if they could harm Lucius in such a way, there was no telling how badly another would be harmed by the kind of attack they…
“Lucius is an Occlumens,” he said quietly as he kept thinking aloud. “One of the best I’ve ever encountered. He grew up doing it without thought.”
“What are you saying?”
Standing up, he muttered, “There might be more to this attack than even we thought of so far.”
Letting out a long breath, she complained, “Just thinking about all of this mess is making my brain cramp.” Standing up, she wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her face against his back. “After this is all over, let’s make it a point to go somewhere that is far away from here with a lovely view, where we can be spoiled in private luxury with no Lucius Malfoy near us.”
Relaxing into her arms, he sighed, “That sounds perfect.”

It had taken bribery, threats, and more than a few promises of what being seen outside of the purview of what they were looking into for their investigation remaining under lock and key. Apparently, much like Las Vegas, what was to be recalled in Lucius Malfoy’s head was to remain there.
The difficulty after this point was the fact that the spell remaining within Lucius could have traps for any daring enough to go into his mind to clear up what was done to the stately blonde wizard in the first place. It was Hermione who insisted that a shielding spell be developed in order to protect Severus.
“I know what I’m about, witch,” he snapped at her after the fifth time she insisted that the shielding spell be used.
“And I want you to continue to know what you are about, you stubborn git!” she raged. “If we do this and there is nothing, fine. It was overkill. But the spell work we’ve seen from this individual has so far been superb and not to defend ones self against that kind of thing is-is asinine!”
Hermione ended up storming out of the room when it became clear Severus wasn’t going to budge in his stance. Once the door finished reverberating with the concussion of wood against stone, it was the very dry wit of Lucius Malfoy that ruled the roost.
“Oh how lovely,” he said pithily. “Your first fight as a couple. How I wish I could have said I wasn’t anywhere near when it occurred.”
Severus let out an irritated growl.
“So how are you going to sweet talk your Miss Granger into a better mood? Is it going to be jewels or are you going to be as adolescent as your fight and wait until she comes back with a white flag?” Lucius leaned back in his chair. “Allow me to give you a piece of advice—Miss Granger is one of the most stubborn witches I’ve met over the years. If you care for her at all, go after her because that chit isn’t the sort to look back.”
Severus rushed out of the study in a blind panic. Would she leave him over this minor disagreement? He rushed to all the places he thought she would be, but wasn’t able to find her until he arrived to the library. It wasn’t until he got closer to her that he saw that she was hastily scribbling out an arithmancy problem.
“Do you hate me now?” This had Hermione stopping and looking up at him in shock. “When will you be leaving?”
“What?” she asked hoarsely. “Whatever for? Because you and I didn’t agree about how to best go about going into Lucius’s head? This isn’t the first time we’ve disagreed and won’t be the last.” Setting aside the work, she turned to face him fully. “We’re both stubborn people, who know we know it all.” This gained her an arched eyebrow. “We’ll fight. The trick is knowing how to clear things up before going to bed that night.” She stood up, going to him. “I want our relationship to work. I’m not leaving anytime soon and it’s going to take more than a silly spat to make me turn away from you.”
“What are you doing?” he said, once he cleared his throat of the emotion tightening it.
“Trying to prove my point, of course,” she said, handing over the paper to him. “There are too many variables, Severus. Going into Lucius’s mind without some sort of protection is not wise.”
He looked over her work she had done so far and murmured, “And if I chose not to do as you wish?”
“I will reluctantly step aside and submit to your decision to do so,” she said, sounding weary yet strongly mulish at the same time. “But let me tell you, I will move heaven and hell to keep you and your mind in one piece.”
Nodding, he placed the paper down onto the table. “I will do as you wish and use a protection spell.” He reached out and caressed her face.
“Does this mean we can have make-up sex now?” she asked, honestly curious as to the situation they were currently in. “I’ve never had it before, but I heard it’s supposed to be good. Though I have to say, I haven’t a clue how it could get better than it’s been already.”

So any questions need answering that I can reply to without giving anything away? Have questions that do? Ask them all! REVIEW!! LOL! Hope you liked this last chapter. Please let me know.
Okay time for Famous Last Words: Movie Edition! The answers to the last one were "Gladiator", Jaba (Djimon Hounsou), and directed by Ridley Scott. Leftover BBQ babyback ribs (which always seem better the next day, in my opinion) go to ChaosLady and TheSexyMuggleLibrarian for knowing the movie. If I missed you, I'm sorry.
Time for the next quote! "Fellas, last year I made 3 million dollars, but your 50 thousand was the most fun. Are you ready? Let's go get 'em." Okay and here is your clue--This is proof that there really are suckers born every minute, even among con-men. Well, there you go! Hope you all are doing well. Midweek can be so mundane. I hope this story, as well as the game, have lightened that a bit. Be brilliant, everyone, and have a lovely day!
