Blaise walked Hermione back to her dorm and made sure she had locked herself in before leaving.
He knew that both Hermione and Draco liked each other, but they were just too damn stubborn to do anything about it. Although Hermione had brought up a good point, Draco would not be accepting of the relationship, or even liking her for that matter for a long time. Draco was a proud person, and Blaise knew he would not admit that he had feelings for Hermione for three reasons. One, because then Blaise would have been right from the start about the two of them, and Draco hated being wrong, especially when it came to him being right. Second, Blaise knew that Draco still had problems when it came to blood status. Although he had seen a change in Draco, he knew that Hermione being a muggleborn would play a huge factor. Draco liked being looked up to and having power over people, it was in his nature. If he decided that he wanted to be with Hermione, and actually admit that he had feelings for her, Blaise knew that none of the other Slytherins would understand besides himself and possibly Theo, and Draco would be shunned. Not to mention that if his father found out, Draco would have a death warrant over his head. And third, Hermione was best friends with the two people that Draco despised more than her, Harry and Ron.
So, there were a few complications when it came to the two of them being together. Blaise however, thought that only the good types of love or relationships are the ones that were worth fighting for. If it was easy, then it was just boring. And he couldn't see either Hermione or Draco just settling for easy, it wasn't who they were, they liked to be challenged.
Upon entering her dorm, Hermione headed straight to her room, not even bothering to look around. If she had, she would have spotted Draco, who was studying her as she walked by him, completely unaware of his presence.
Draco watched as she went into her room, and shut the door behind her. When she had entered the room, Draco's heart started beating rapidly and he hitched in a deep breath, not daring to let it out until she was out of sight. As soon as she had shut the door, he let out the breath he had been holding, and felt his heart beat start to relax. He scowled at her door. Why was he hiding from her? He wasn't afraid of her!
He kept replaying what he had overheard outside.
"Of course he's attractive! Every girl at this school knows that, and I would be lying if I denied it."
"It doesn't matter that when he kissed me, it was unlike anything I have ever experienced before."
Draco felt his stomach tighten as he recalled what she said about their kiss. Had she really thought that kissing him was unlike anything she had ever experienced before? Draco knew that Hermione hadn't been with that many guys. If Draco was guessing correctly, he would say that she had kissed three guys, including him. He knew that she and Krum had a thing during the Tri-Wizard tournament, something at the time Draco could not understand, Krum being all famous and all, and going after someone who was so simple and a Mudblood such as Hermione. And then there was Weasley. Even thinking about the two of them kissing made Draco want to be sick. He knew Hermione hadn't really had a lot of experience with guys, but to hear her say that his kiss affected her more than any other kiss she had ever had, well, obviously that made Draco feel good about himself. Draco knew he was a good kisser, and had kissed his fair share of girls throughout his years at Hogwarts. But, now that Draco was thinking about it his kiss with Hermione, he remembered he had felt something. When his lips had touched hers the first time, he had felt a shock run throughout his whole body, as though he had been electrocuted, but not in a painful way. He now realized the reason he had gotten so defensive about kissing her was because of the feelings it had evoked inside of him. And then the second time, when they had been having their pillow fight and he ended up on top of her, he had just felt a pull towards her and couldn't stop himself from kissing her again. The minute their lips had touched, he had felt something inside of him stir, but had almost pulled back until she responded to him eagerly, and it was as though a flame had burst inside of him, making him need more. He deepened the kiss, and felt as though this wasn't enough, so he started trailing kisses along her neck, and then he bit it, totally giving himself to feeling that was inside of him. He didn't know what it was, just that he couldn't get enough of her: her smell, or the feeling of her lips on his. And when she had moaned, he felt like he was going to explode, and that's when he had realized what was going on, and pulled back immediately shutting down.
He hadn't ever had feelings like that come over him while with a girl. Of course he had been physically attracted to many women, which wasn't exactly hard, he was a guy after all, but none of the women he had slept with had made him feel the things he did when he was kissing Hermione. Draco could admit now that getting angry and shutting down the way he did wasn't exactly the best way to handle the situation. Hell, from what he had overheard, she had been experiencing similar feelings that he had been.
Draco wanted to smack himself in frustration. He had totally forgotten about Hermione being cheated on by Ron. No wonder she had been so mad when he had pulled away so harshly. She had just been rejected and broken by the one guy she thought she could always count on, and then here he was, her worst enemy, rejecting her too.
He knew that he had hurt Hermione's feelings, that much was obvious. But she needed to understand that whatever it was that was happening between them was not right! He was not supposed to feel the things he did towards her when they were kissing, nor was he supposed to be sitting on a couch thinking about all the things he was currently thinking about! She was Hermione Granger for merlin's sake!
And then he remembered another thing that she had said, which was when he had decided he had heard enough.
"Because it would never work. We would have to hide our relationship, because I know he would not openly promote being in a relationship with someone like me. Even if he does like me, which I highly doubt he does, he will never admit it. And I can't be with someone who is always going to be fighting an internal battle with themselves over being with me, kissing me one minute to insulting me the next. I don't deserve that."
She didn't even know how right she was. No matter what he was feeling, there was no way that he was going to walk around Hogwarts holding her hand and allowing everyone to know that he was into her. The looks he would get! Not to mention that if his father found out, Draco would never hear the end of it, and would more than likely get a good beating or ten out of the deal.
Draco let out a deep breath. It didn't matter what he had felt, she was right. There was no way that the two of them could be together. It just wouldn't work. Hermione didn't deserve to be with someone who would not be open about being with her, and even though Draco didn't agree with his father, or even really like him for that matter, he would not do anything to further jeopardize his relationship with his family. At least, not intentionally..
Finally realizing that there was nothing more to think about, as he had reached the same decision as Hermione had, Draco got up from the couch and headed to his room, shutting the door behind him. He striped down to his boxers and slid under the covers, waiting until sleep finally consumed him.
When Draco woke the next morning, he rolled over and looked at the clock. He still had half an hour until his alarm went off. He let out an angry sigh, and ran a hand through his hair. Normally, Draco wouldn't be up this early, but a dream about a certain Gryffindor had jerked him awake. He tried to remember what he had been dreaming about, but found that he was forgetting more and more of the dream the longer he was awake. All he could remember at this point was that she was in it, and he had experienced a feeling so strong that it had jerked him awake.
He got up and threw the covers off himself, and grabbed a towel from his closet. He knew he wasn't getting back to sleep, and didn't really see a point in trying to fall back asleep for an extra 25 minutes. Instead, he decided to shower, in hopes to rinse off any lingering feelings for his housemate.
When Draco approached the bathroom door, he could see steam coming out from under the closed door. As he approached the door, he could hear Hermione humming softly to herself as the shower ran.
Feeling annoyed, Draco banged on the door and smirked when he heard a squeak from Hermione.
"What?!" She exclaimed.
"Hurry up in there!"
"Honestly Malfoy, I just got in here not too long ago, hold your damn horses."
Hold your horses? Draco snorted. Muggles and their stupid sayings.
"I don't have any damn horses Granger!" Malfoy shouted back.
He could have sworn he heard a giggle come from the other side of the door.
"I know you're standing outside of the door waiting for me. Just give me a few minutes to rinse the rest of the soap off of me and then the shower is all yours Princess."
Draco couldn't stop the mental picture of Hermione's body, or what he tried to remember it looked like when he had invaded her shower a while back, with soap running down it. He felt a jolt in his groin, and shuddered, shaking his head to get rid of his thoughts.
Hermione opened the door, and Draco Hermione walk out of the bathroom amongst a cloud of steam. She stopped in front of him and said, "There, it's all yours."
Draco couldn't help but stare at her, stuck on the spot as her scent hit him. He hadn't really ever noticed it before, but she smelled amazing. He assumed that the vanilla scent that he could smell was from whatever body was she was using, and he couldn't stop himself from inhaling her sweet scent.
Hermione looked at him questionably, wondering why Draco was standing there with an odd look on his face.
"Malfoy?"
Draco's head snapped up and he looked at her. He focused on her face, and she saw that he was back to himself.
"What Granger?"
"I'm done with the bathroom, it's all yours."
Draco walked past her, trying his best not to inhale another whiff of her scent as he went by. Hermione turned and looked at him, and was met with the bathroom door closing in her face.
"Well how rude," Hermione huffed as she headed towards her room. Draco had been acting oddly. She didn't know what he had been thinking about just moments before, but whatever it was, it made him have a weird look on his face. Hermione could have sworn that Draco had inhaled a deep breath, but couldn't be 100% sure.
She shook her head, not wanting to think about Draco. When he had banged on the door, Hermione had had a mini heart attack. After calming down and realizing who it was that was knocking on the door, Hermione had felt a strange feeling in her stomach. After her conversation with Blaise and admitting out loud that she indeed did have feelings for Draco, she didn't know how she was going to face him. Obviously she hadn't told him how she felt, so she didn't have to worry about that at least, but still. She didn't want her change of heart towards him to be obvious, as she didn't want anything else to happen between them. Or did she? Hermione had to admit, the feelings that had come over her when Draco had kissed her, were beyond anything that she had ever experienced before. No, she hadn't kissed that many people before, but she knew there was something different about her kiss with Draco. She could feel it deep within herself, which is another reason why she was so reluctant to let anything happen between them again.
Hermione had loved Ron, and even he hadn't evoked the feelings in her body that Draco had. Hermione knew that she liked Draco, as much as she hated to admit it. Seeing the side of him that he had allowed her to see, had changed Hermione's outlook on him. Regardless of if he realized it or not, he had showed her kindness and caring on more than one occasion, something she had never thought he was capable of.
She shook her head. She needed to stop her train of thoughts. She had already decided that nothing was going to happen between Draco and herself, so she needed to stop thinking about things that had transpired between them in the past. Regardless of how it made her feel. Hermione knew that even if she wanted it to work, which she had to admit a part of her wanted it to, they never would. Draco would not go against his house, or his family in order to be with her. Hell, she wasn't even sure if Draco even liked her, so why should she even waste her time thinking about such things.
Hermione flopped down on her bed, enjoying the feeling of her sheets against her exposed skin. She let out a sigh and stressed, feeling her muscles relax. She looked over at the clock and saw that she still had an hour until she needed to be down in the Great Hall for breakfast.
She heard the water turn back on, and knew that Malfoy was now having a shower. She lay in bed, with her eyes closed, enjoying the time she had to herself. She re-opened her eyes when she heard the shower turn off, and looked over at the clock and saw that she had been laying there with her eyes closed for fifteen minutes. Sighing, she got up and headed over to her closet, grabbing the clothes she needed for the day. She grabbed her tie out of a drawer, tying it around her neck. She looked at her hair in the mirror and frowned. Laying down with wet hair had not been a good idea. She grabbed her wand and used a spell she had learned from Ginny in order to remove all knots, and to make her untamable curls more manageable. Satisfied with her hair, Hermione applied the light makeup that she had started to wear within the last year. She nodded at her reflection, and grabbed her robe off the back of her door, along with her school bag. When she looked back at her clock, she saw that breakfast was going to start in ten minutes.
Hermione left her room, and made her way to her shared common rom. She was debating on whether or not to go and knock on Draco's door when his door swung open and he walked out.
Draco saw Hermione standing in the middle of the room and he stopped walking.
"Can I help you?" Draco asked.
Hermione started nervously chatting away. "I didn't know whether or not I should wait for you before walking down to the Great Hall for breakfast. I know I'm not supposed to be walking the halls alone, but at the same time I don't want you to feel obligated to have to follow me around anywhere, especially if you have other things that you would rather be doing, but I totally forgot to message Blaise in order to ask him to meet me outside the common room to-"
Draco held up his hand and cut her off. "Granger, you don't need to explain your life story to me. I was just merely wondering if there was anything that you needed. And I will walk with you down to the Great Hall."
"Okay. I just wasn't sure because the other day you left here without me, and I didn't know if you were still planning on ignoring me and leaving me here to walk there again alone and-"
"Granger, are you okay? You're never this talkative.."
Hermione took a deep breath and calmed herself down. She needed to stop allowing her nerves to take over. She was acting like a complete fool, and she didn't want to embarrass herself in front of Draco. Plus, she didn't want him to think she was acting any differently towards him, whether it be because of nerves or not. She needed to get control over herself. Being in his presence before hadn't affected her, but now that she had talked to Blaise, it seemed that admitting her feelings aloud had caused her body to respond when he was around.
"I'm fine," Hermione stated after getting a hold of herself.
Draco looked at her, trying to decide whether or not she was lying, but she turned away and started towards the portrait hole and he followed behind her.
He watched Hermione as she walked ahead of him, studying her figure. He had never really taken the time to actually look at her. He realized that Hermione had changed a lot over the years. Her teeth, which were abnormally large when he had first seen her, were perfect size now. Her bushy hair was no longer bushy, but was now flowing down her back in silky waves. She walked with her head held high, but not in an unattractive stuck up kind of way. It was in a way that made others aware that she was not one to be messed with.
Hermione must have felt his eyes on her, because she turned around and looked at him over her shoulder. Draco made sure to avert his eyes quickly so he wasn't caught in the act.
She turned back around, and opened the doors to the Great Hall. Draco followed behind her, and they went their separate ways: Hermione to the Gryffindor table and him to Slytherin.
Hermione smiled as Harry, Ron, and Ginny waved her over. She took a seat beside Ginny, and across from Harry and Ron.
"Morning Hermione," Harry said smiling.
"Morning Harry!"
"Are you ready for tonight?" Ginny asked.
"Tonight?" Hermione asked confused.
"You know, for our get together in the Gryffindor common rooms. You didn't forget did you?"
"Oh yeah, that's tonight."
"You're still coming aren't you?" Ron asked.
"Yes, I'm coming. I just momentarily forgot about it."
"Everything okay Hermione?" Harry asked, concern evident in his voice.
"Yeah I'm fine! Nothing to worry about."
"Are you sure? You know you can talk to us about anything," Harry stated.
Hermione smiled and said, "I know."
Hermione hated keeping secrets from her friends, but she knew that one thing that she could not talk to them about was Malfoy. They may be her best friend and all, but Hermione knew there were some things that even they wouldn't understand, and her developing feelings for her worst enemy was one of them. Ron had been mad enough when she had a thing for Victor, she could only imagine what his reaction would be if he knew that Hermione was into Draco. Not only that, but she knew that Harry wouldn't understand either. That's why she had talked to Blaise about everything she would normally talk to them about, because she knew that Blaise wouldn't get upset like they did.
Hermione scolded herself. There was nothing to tell about Malfoy. She had decided that nothing was going to happen, so she wasn't lying. Yes, something had transpired between them, but that was in the past.
Hermione was happy that she had chosen a seat with her back to the Slytherin table.
When Draco had sat down, he was greeted similarly to Hermione.
"Malfoy, my man! Good morning!" Theo exclaimed.
Draco quirked an eyebrow and looked at Blaise.
"Is he already drunk?"
Blaise laughed and said, "Sadly, no."
"What's wrong with being in a good mood?" Theo asked.
"Because it's early, and no one should be as energetic as you are right now," Draco stated.
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed."
"Shut up Nott."
"Aweee, grumpy Malfoy," Theo said in a baby voice.
Blaise burst out laughing, while Draco turned his head towards his friend and narrowed his eyes.
"I swear Nott, I will hex your ass."
"Thanks for acknowledging my ass, it is pretty fine isn't it?" Theo asked.
"You're hopeless," Draco said rolling his eyes.
"Whatever," Theo said waving him off. "Anyways, about tonight."
"What about it?" Draco asked.
"Well, I was thinking that we should do something adventurous. Sitting in the dungeons and getting drunk surrounded by people is lame."
"Nott, you've done that on more occasions then me and Drake can both count," Blaise stated.
"Exactly! So, since it's our first boys night this year, I'm thinking we should do something different."
Draco couldn't help but be interested in what Theodore was saying.
"And what do you propose we do?"
"I say we sneak off of the school grounds and go into Hogsmeade."
"You know what, that does sound pretty fun.." Blaise said.
"And then we can go into the Hogs Head, and grab some drinks. We're of age, so we can't get in trouble for drinking in a bar," Theodore said.
"Well, that much is true. But we would be out past curfew and would have to sneak in and out of the school," Draco stated.
"That's the fun part," Theodore said smirking.
"It's not impossible.." Blaise said slowly.
"Of course it's not impossible," Draco stated.
"So, are you guys in?" Theodore asked.
Draco and Blaise looked at each other and shrugged.
"I'm in," Blaise said.
"Ah, fuck it. I'm in too," Draco said.
"Excellent!"
"If you get us caught Nott, I am blaming the whole thing on you," Draco snapped.
"We're not going to get caught."
"If we DO, I am not taking the blame. I am the Head Boy, I shouldn't be associated with these types of things. So, if anyone catches us I am merely stating that I caught you two and was returning you back to your rooms."
"Fine with me," Theodore stated.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Blaise said nonchalantly.
Just then, breakfast appeared and Draco turned his attention to the food in front of him. Although he wouldn't admit it to either of his friends, he was actually excited to be doing something that was against the rules; he was a Slytherin after all.
The rest of the day went by uneventfully, and before either Hermione or Draco knew it, it was dinnertime.
"Finally, I'm starving!" Ron moaned as they sat down at the Gryffindor table.
"How can you be starving Ronald? You just ate lunch a few hours ago," Hermione stated.
"Yeah, a few HOURS ago."
Hermione rolled her eyes.
"Has he always been like this?" Hermione asked looking across the table at Harry and Ginny.
"Yup, pretty much," Ginny stated.
"Well, I'm with Ron," Harry said. "I'm pretty hungry too."
"Well we're all hungry, but at least we didn't have to listen to you complain about being starving for the last 2 hours," Hermione said.
"Oi!" Ron exclaimed around a mouthful of chicken.
"Ugh, don't talk with your mouth full Ron," Hermione said disgusted.
He swallowed and said, "Sorry."
"Boys will never learn," Ginny said to Hermione.
"You're telling me!"
The two girls burst into a fit of giggles.
"So Hermione, I know you're Head Girl and probably have some duties that you need to do, so we decided to start the party around 9? Does that work for you?" Ginny asked.
"Yeah, that works for me," Hermione said smiling. She loved her friends, they were always looking out for her.
"Okay awesome!" Ginny exclaimed smiling.
"Did you get alcohol?" Ron whispered to Ginny.
Ginny quirked an eyebrow. "What kind of question is that?"
"Well did you?"
"Of course I did."
"How were you able to manage that?" Hermione asked.
"When you have Fred and George as siblings, you learn a lot of things."
"It's against school rules to have alcohol.." Hermione stated slowly.
"Oh Hermione, come on!" Harry pleaded.
Hermione looked at him.
"It's one night of fun surrounded by friends, and we're not going to leave then Gryffindor common room. No one is even going to know."
"Okay fine," Hermione said giving in.
"Yr dah brst" Ron said.
Hermione scowled at him.
Ron swallowed and quickly said, "You're the best."
"Like I said, boys will never learn," Ginny stated.
Hermione smiled and started eating.
After dinner, Hermione separate from her friends and headed back to her Heads dorm. She didn't really have any duties that she needed to do, but decided that she was going to take the time she had before she needed to meet up with her friends to dive into a good book. She hadn't read any novels in a while, and she missed it. She went into her room and went over to her bookshelf, grabbing a book at random. She looked around her room, and decided that she didn't feel like sitting on her bed and reading, that she would be more comfortable out on the couches by the fireplace. She sat down on one of the couches, and sighed as she opened her book, loving the smell of the new pages.
She started reading, and was hooked from the first sentence. Hermione loved reading for many reasons. For one thing, it didn't matter what kind of mood she was in or what problems she was having, she could momentarily forget about it all when she was reading. She entered a new world as her eyes scanned the pages.
Draco entered the common room, and stopped as he spotted Hermione sitting on the couch, totally engrossed in her book. He studied her as she sat there. He didn't know how long he had stood there for, but he picked up on things that she did while she was reading by habit. She would smile a genuinely happy smile, at what parts Draco assumed were things that she had wanted to happen in her book. Then she would bite her lip and her eyebrows would draw together, and Draco could tell from the look on her face that something intense was taking place. He almost laughed when she let out a sigh, and then a smile appeared on her face again. She was so lost in her book, that it actually amused him.
Not wanting to disturb her, he quietly made his way to his room, and shut the door as silently as possible. He threw his robe down onto his bed, and headed to his closet. He needed to figure out what he was going to wear tonight. There was no way that he was going to be wearing his clothes that marked him in the Slytherin house, although the bartender would obviously know where they had come from. But, he didn't want to draw any extra attention to himself in hopes that they wouldn't get caught for sneaking out of the school.
Draco grabbed black pants and a black shirt. He wasn't a very colourful bloke when it came to his wardrobe. He preferred dark colours. He knew that they contrasted well with his pale features, or so he had been told from many of his female companions.
Draco looked over at the clock. It was almost 7. He knew that Theo and Blaise wanted to start drinking before they snuck out of the school, and Draco didn't really know what else he could do to kill time. He was already dressed. He had a shower that morning, so there was no point in getting another one. And he didn't just want to sit in his room and watch the clock.
He grabbed his cloak and went back into the common room and found Hermione sitting in the exact same spot and position she had been in when he was last there.
"Granger."
Hermione kept reading.
"GRANGER!" Draco shouted.
Hermione jumped and her book went soaring across the room.
Draco couldn't stop the smirk that etched itself onto his features upon her reaction.
"Malfoy! You scared me!" Hermione exclaimed, her hand on her heart.
"Well I tried getting your attention already.."
"You did?"
"Yes, I did."
"Oh.."
"Yeah."
"Well, what did you want?" Hermione asked, her cheeks red.
"I just wanted to tell you that I'm leaving for the majority of the night."
"Umm, okay?"
"Well I didn't want you freaking out and falling through another table."
Hermione's face flushed. "Well, for your information I am also planning on being gone most of the night."
Draco raised an eyebrow. "Is that so."
"It is."
"Well, not that it's any of your business, but I just wanted you to know that if you hear the doors slamming later tonight it's more than likely me returning."
"Okay."
"Where are you going?" Draco asked.
"Where are you going?"
Draco smirked.
"Anyways, I'm heading to the Slytherin common room, and unless you're planning on walking the corridors alone, you might want to come with me now."
"Oh, I didn't even think about that.." Hermione stated truthfully.
"You're welcome."
"Whatever Malfoy!"
"So are you going to come?"
Hermione jumped up from the couch. "Yeah, just give me a minute and let me change quickly."
Draco rolled his eyes. "Hurry Granger, I don't have all day. I have places to be."
Hermione mumbled something under her breath that Draco didn't catch, and disappeared in her room. She stepped back into the common room a few minutes later, and Draco studied her quickly.
She was wearing black jeans, which were tight compared to what she usually wore. She also had on a red shirt. Draco snorted. Typical. She walked over towards him, and Draco noticed that even her shirt was tighter compared to what she usually wore, and it hugged her curves nicely.
"Okay, I'm ready."
"Where are you headed?"
"Gryffindor common room."
"Alright, well I'll walk you there and then head off."
"Okay," Hermione said nodding.
The two of them walked together in silence, neither knowing what to say. Hermione didn't want to say something and sound stupid, and Draco was too busy wondering what she was thinking about to say anything himself. Before Draco knew it, they were standing outside of the Gryffindor common room.
"Ummm.. well thanks Malfoy," Hermione said awkwardly.
"Yeah."
Draco turned and started walking away.
"Seriously Malfoy, thank you for walking me here. I know how annoying it must be having to pretty much babysit me, but I do really appreciate it."
Draco turned back around, surprised.
"No worries Granger, it's my job."
Draco saw disappointment flicker across her features, but before he could be sure if that's what he had seen, she had a smile plastered on her face.
"Yeah, well thanks. Have a good night."
"You too," Draco said as he watched her disappear behind the Gryffindor portrait.
